| the miss use of words like your and you're, or there, their and they're. Posted: 5/16/2008 9:47:42 AM | Does it bother anyone else that no one uses the right words for anything these days? I mean, we are all adults on this site right? then why is it that over half the people on here seem like they have a 5 year old typing for them? When I was in kindergarden I knew the difference between they're, their, and there, where, were, and we're, whether and weather, you're and your, no and know, sense, scents, and cents, seen and scene... I could go on... how is it that no one knows this stuff anymore? how does anyone graduate without knowing this stuff?
If I'm alone here then I guess I'll delete this thread, but I have a hard time believing that there is no one else out there that is bothered by this...

| the miss use of words like your and you're, or there, their and they're. Posted: 5/16/2008 10:22:21 AM | That used to bother me a lot until....I found myself making the same sort of mistakes myself. Maybe it's a byproduct of age, but as one who used to be a stickler for vocabulary and spelling I've found my fingers typing the wrong "there" even if my brain knows full well what the right choice is. Quite embarrassing, when it happens, which is far too often.
We all have things that get to us. I confess that I find it a challenge to get past poor command of the language at times in others, but I also know that each of us has different strengths and weaknesses. I can't draw to save my life, and have failed miserably at attempts to learn both French and Spanish, but hopefully my positive traits compensate. I've learned that just because someone would have a hard time passing English class doesn't mean they don't have a lot to offer in other ways.

Your and you're doesn't bother me so much, but there and their is irritating. Typos, I can understand. However, when one uses the wrong spelling over and over and over again and it's more than one or two errors in a post, it's highly annoying. Unless the person has a learning disability, there's really no excuse. I think a lot of it is laziness and not caring. My typing is not perfect either, but I care enough about my presentation to correct the errors. Yes, it takes longer, but that is okay.

I know I type too fast sometimes too and my fingers get a little ahead of my brain, but when people use the same wrong word over and over again I know I spelled "misuse" wrong in the opening post. My 's' gets sticky and I hit the space bar by accident (again, it's a typo) but I don't do it over and over again and I usually go back and fix my mistakes if I catch them. I know my grammar my be a little off, but for the most part my spelling is correct (minus the typos). I just can't believe that half the people out there who are using the wrong words have no idea that they are.

On the subject of grammar, punctuation and writing in general, the thing that really pisses me off is the amount of profiles written in "text" language.
Words like "lyk, wiv, ov, laff..." etc etc, the list is endless!
If people are going to take the time to write a profile the at least use full english please!
Rant over...

Even using a program like Firefox (with a built in spell checker) doesn't leave me with a blemish free record.
I find myself writing most times in a manner that's aurally conversational, and sometimes that produces phonetic mistakes by accident, as a natural consequence of that.
I do agree though that those posts with dozens of errors are quite painful to read, and even worse when the use of "text speak" creeps in.
UR, RU, etc.
That just screams inattention, to me.

Posted: 5/20/2008 9:35:19 AM | Well I have to say I'm happy to hear that I'm not the only one who can't stand text lingo either. Half the time I can't understand what they are trying to say so I just ignore them. I will admit I do catch myself using "u" instead of you, but usually I only do that when I'm talking to friends by text on phone, otherwise I don't see the harm in typing the full word, it's less confusing that way.
As for grammar and spelling typos, I know spell check doesn't work for everything because even if you use the wrong word, as long as you spell it right it wont catch it, 99% of the time anyways.

| the miss use of words like your and you're, or there, their and they're. Posted: 5/21/2008 3:51:20 AM | ^^ Agreed. People who don’t proofread their posts bug me. When you call people on it you get the usual excuses of “not enough time” and “not important”. Sorry, but you DO have enough time and it IS important; if you can’t be bothered to read your own contribution then neither can I.
Back on topic: There currently seems to be an over-abundance of people confusing “seen” for “saw”, e.g. “I seen a great film last night.”
There are so many people making idiotic mistakes on this forum that I’ve taken to editing posts for spelling and grammar whenever I need to quote an earlier response to a thread. I’m not asking for perfection, but surely people can use a spell check program, the period and Caps Lock keys? *Sigh*

then why is it that over half the people on here seem like they have a 5 year old typing for them? At the start of the above sentence, you put a lower case letter instead of a capital.

This type of basic error really bugs me.
