Posted: 5/16/2008 11:35:20 AM | A Nigerian woman was jailed for 26 months today for buying a baby
back in her homeland for 150 pounds in order to obtain a council flat....
Officials in Ealing,West London became suspicious when she suddenly turned
up with a child at their Housing Office as she hadn't mentioned having any kids before.
The police have been unable to locate the babies real parents in Nigeria and
sadly the social services have had to take him into care for the forseable future....
After the accused trial she claimed she had never lied before as she was sent down.....
Have things become that bad in this country that women will buy children to get a bloody flat?
Do you think 26 months is far to soft a sentence and it doesn't send out a strong enough warning?

I suppose its just another example of the fine world we live in.
I can't understand how someone would want to sell their baby in the first place, but i suppose if it was a poor Nigerian family...needed the money, and would assume the child would get a better life in the UK. Lets hope he or she does... | |

The council house would have been cheaper for the tax payer
dont forget she will be housed by the authority when she leaves prison...

it depends where she requests doesn't it?.... she might use her brain and choose an fantastic area she has very remote connections too.
not all authorities have hell hole council estates, most of the council estates in my county are fantastic. i am only thinking of one that's rough, and that one is still fantastic in relation to other council authority housing areas. | |

Posted: 5/16/2008 12:01:12 PM | I doubt the baby was sold! Sorry I'm mixed Nigerian and one of the things I love most about the culture is how fantastically child orientated we are.
Orphans tend to go to extended family members wherever possible no matter how poor the recipient parents are. It's seen kinda like a blessing to take in an extra little one rather than the "extra mouth to feed winge" of the UK culture. My own parents fostered several teenage boys under this traditional system, and my lad gets the benefits of it, even here in England with pressies and hand me downs.
It's so hard to put into words the mindset of a different culture but I think think child was almost certainly kidnapped, and even IF both parents are dead, somewhere in Nigeria there are Aunts, Uncles, even 3rd cousins twice removed going frantic with worry right now.
I understand that we have a massive problem with fraud, corruption, over population, (caused by our love of kids!) and many other issues, but selling our babies is beyond the imagination of 99.9% of us. It's worse than selling your soul to the devil, and Muslin or Christian we tend to take religion very seriously for all our faults.
If I were this woman I'd be praying for a life sentence here, and that I'd never be deprted back to Nigeria as "natural justice" can be extremely harsh for so heinous a crime as the kidnap of a baby. If her name becomes known to the family she stole the baby from only then God will be able to help her.
I hope little Madeleine McCann was kidnapped in similar circumstances for her sake, as it's just occured to me that this is a better outcome for her than the ones that have been going through my mind ever since she went missing. If so, perhaps one day she'll be traced? | |

been here 8 years, rough part of town, been stalked, there is alot of drug use going on that i get free high when the smell comes into my flat, sqatters, fights and stabbings and i have been on the transfer list 5 years
will they re house me, NO! i havent suffered enough A.S.B.!
CRICKEY what is this world coming to, i wouldnt seep that low to buy a baby and get a house!
they should defo lock up the parents who sold the child in the first place and i bet the woman that brought the child has a tv and other luxeries in her cell, that we are paying for makes me sick! | |

A Nigerian woman has been jailed for 26 months for bringing a child illegally into the UK.
Peace Sandberg, who was living in the UK, went to Nigeria and bought a baby to become eligible for a council flat, Isleworth Court Court heard.
She was convicted last month of bringing a child illegally into the UK.
She was reported to police after she initially told council staff she had given birth to the boy, then changed her story to say he was adopted.
Sandberg had a daughter who was living with her in council accommodation in the borough of Ealing in west London.
With dual nationality - Nigerian and Swedish - she knew that as a European citizen working in the UK she would be eligible for a council flat because she had a child.
But her daughter left the UK and moved to Sweden to live with her father, Sandberg's ex-husband.
With her daughter's departure Sandberg saw her hopes of a new home slipping away - which is when she hatched her plan to get a child.
At the end of 2006 she flew back to Nigeria.
She had already sent £150 which the police believe was payment for the baby boy.
She needed a visa to take him into the UK.
During the trial Andrea Charles, a visa officer at the British High Commission in the Nigerian capital, Abuja, described to the jury how a distraught Sandberg turned up with the baby.
There is a possibility this child will never know his true identity

Ms Charles said she had no reason to doubt her story and issued the visa.
When Sandberg arrived back at Heathrow airport she immediately went to the housing department.
Councillor Ian Green of Ealing Council says: "She told staff that the child was hers. But they had seen her only a few months before and knew that the child couldn't be hers as she wasn't pregnant at the time.
"She then changed her story and said she had adopted the child.
"Council officers were still not satisfied and alerted the police and the other authorities because they were of the opinion that she was using this child to gain council accommodation."
A criminal investigation was launched by the Metropolitan Police's Paladin Team, specialists in child trafficking.

It makes no difference to me what someones race,skin colour or religion is and if I find
a story that I belive will be of benefit to the forum I'll start it unless its breaking any rules...
If the woman had been Spanish were I come from originaly I still would have started it
even if it meant I felt uncomfortable because it was making my country look bad........

The belief expressed above by some posters that victims (parents & by extension the child)are at fault when a child is kidnapped from overseas, mean the will is not there to change things. Expressions of sympathy for the frantic parents & relatives of this baby are noticeably absent.
The UK rates number 3 in the world for child sex trafficking, and with the views expressed above on this thread, I can see just how difficult it will be to stamp this trade out anytime soon. | |

When there my first thought at seeing the absolute poverty the children are being raised in, was that I wanted to bring them all back to the UK. Once you understand the real riches of love and security these children grow up in, you realise that for the vast majority they are better off where they are!
If this SWEEDISH woman was able to buy a baby in Nigeria, it was not necessarily a Nigerian baby. Like most W African states Nigeria has a lot of immigrants and refugees.
Could you not imagine the mother perhaps being a refugee from Sierra Leone or Liberia; cut off from any family to help. Made pregnant in a society which still expects a mother to be married or shamed. No one to help her, thrown out of the house where she earned a living as a maid for pennies a day, and a mat to sleep on the floor. Could or would such a woman, take money for the baby. With no benefits or home or family, she may well have thought she was doing the best thing for the child. | |

African children have been sold into slavery for centuries...and their own countrymen are doing it to them all the time...
I'm sure that the majority of african people are really rather lovely and we oughtn't be racist but the truth is..in my country at least, is that there a lot of children who hail from the african continent who are not related to the people who claim to be their parents but are using and abusing the youngsters..It's a well recognised and recorded reality that african refugees bring along their slaves with them to european countries to care for their children or do whatever is desired of their owners...it would be lovely to pretend it's not true but it is.
Lucky for them if they get to be house keepers and nannies but pretty shite if they get to be abused as sexual commodities...
It's all so screwed up and not simple at all...slavery is rampant amongst Africans....I've not lived there and I don't know any nigerians or kenyans etc. but I'm not ignorant of the happenings that goes on.. or in denial due to my wanting to be non-biased towards a race I have no experience of before they came to my country...child slavery is a huge problem amongst some of those people. | |

I am 1/8th scot but i loathe Mr Brown.His nationality does not come ito it. His MORALS do.I will not defend him.
This woman BOUGHT A CHILD.She isnt even a BRITISH national ffs .But she BOUGHT a child.That is SLAVERY.And she brought it into this country for financial gain. She has 26 months prison to serve.She should be deported to her home country of Sweden after it is served.
And not allowed back here.

feel sorry for the kid having to be brought up not near his real family and since she won't tell the truth, he will grow up not knowing where he came from | |

Posted: 5/17/2008 4:43:02 AM | whoah - the woman who kidnapped and enslaved a baby (purchasing another human life = slavery) has got off with a pathetic sentence. 2 years, of which she'll only serve 12 months if she behaves herself? Where did I defend her? My outrage was about the attitudes displayed to the poor victims.
Disgusting and undefendable - that's both the court system that awarded such a derisory sentence and the criminal herself. In my mind she should be doing life, with no possibility of parole, but then I'll admit I want the book thrown at criminals who prey on children, in common with most mothers I've ever met, from all backgrounds. I personally believe that the current levels of child trafficking in the UK would fall if we had proper penalties for scum like this. As it is when she gets out she could easily try the same crime with a different child in Holland or another European country. Knowing Nigerian levels of fraud, she'll just get a forged passport and try again here in a different town.
It's the lack of empathy for the child's parents that shocked me. The baby and the parents are true victims. The parents will never know peace of heart again, and will always be wondering, and searching. | |
