| spelling mistakes! Posted: 5/17/2008 1:36:21 AM | Bloody hell I wish I had never started this. Didn't realise it would upset people. I just think all websites should have spellcheck. Then maybe I would be able to understand the meaning behind the words. That is all. | |

| spelling mistakes! Posted: 5/17/2008 1:36:52 AM | heres a tip... when a man is calling out your name in a fit of passion... he aint gunna be spelling it...
nothing worse than having your lover correct your gramma..ha ha in a fit of passion.
listening to what the persons saying behind the words.. is the connection.. or not.. hey theres also a thread on judging people by their shoes... wonders why people are single? if you dont understand what people are saying...,,, scientifically if the first letter and the last letter are right the rest of the word dosent matter the brain still reads it...
hey my dad was really sick as a kid.. he missed a heap of school.... he grew up thinking he was dumb.... b/c he didnt have as good as skills as others.. he then worked young to help his family........ hes not dumb... he had character.. ohhyeer.. lots peeps coulda been nice to him and not make him feel dumb or coulda been gracious. and looked at his heart... graciousness is classy...
edit.... actually i grew up with the grammar police.... my mum.. i would come in excited start telling her something amazing.. only to have every word pulled apart... and made to pronounce the words accurately etc... still haunts me... and acheived the opposite..... i speak slang. i refuse to use a shift key.. etc she hates how i talk.... and shes eventually adjusted to my dissing grammar and using acroynms in email.. but me id much prefer to sit in a gutter and talk to someone... everyone else is looking down on.. then sit with pretentiousness.but thats just me.. smiles/peace

Sometimes the spelling errors are just a typo we in here ( well some have been known to) don't judge people by the way they type things we can basicly work it out.
What were you saying on another thread about really liking this forum cause we say what we like. You better believe it. Newby alert

| spelling mistakes! Posted: 5/17/2008 4:55:20 AM | Spelling and grammar are weird and touchy subjects. It seems everyone has a problem with "spelling less well than me". If it's someone with barely adequate spelling they get annoyed with people with bad spelling. If it's someone with perfect or near perfect spelling they get annoyed by nearly everyone.
Everyone has their own standard of what they consider important, and how they consider those who don't match that standard (whether they admit it or not). It may make little or no difference, or it might well make you judge that person slightly, dismiss their opinion a bit more than you would if it was phrased better.
Personally I try to value good spelling (and I'm very fussy about my own) but at the same time not take it too seriously when people spell certain types of things badly. There are common mistakes made. I think I'd be more surprised to see "you're", "your", "they're", "there", "than", "then", etc used correctly than misused. You have to decide whether ultimately it matters.
Personally I don't take those things too seriously, but there is certainly a level below that, where people routinely misspell common words, and to me it shows a sloppiness and a lack of clarity of thought, a lack of interest and a lack of... well... intelligence. Not that I'm not talking about generally casual typing, or occasional errors (especially very common ones). I'm talking about extremely bad spelling that makes the meaning unclear.
Actually I find punctuation is one that's more important. Some people have no idea how to use commas and full stops and just write a giant slab of unbroken text which is incredibly hard to figure out.
And I'm sorry, but I have to do this, just for the irony:
spelling/grammar natzi.
That should be nazi. | |

| spelling mistakes! Posted: 5/17/2008 5:07:04 AM | | WG, there's been a few of those.........giant slabs of unbroken text on here as of late, some profiles are written in the same manner. | |
|
| spelling mistakes! Posted: 5/17/2008 5:15:24 AM | Hear is my veiw on the subject. No won goes threw life with out making miss takes. It doesn't meen we are dum.
On the other side of the coin, Anyone that has a problem with what you posted or how you feel, needs to look in the mirror and see why they are offended by it. There is nothing wrong with being put off by someone that makes way too many spelling mistakes. You are intolerant about one issue, they are intolerant about another. We should be tolerant to a point, but we shouldn't be tolerant about everything.
|
| spelling mistakes! Posted: 5/17/2008 4:33:44 PM | WG.... yes although I did deliberately misspell and tweak grammar, in my post..... natzi was a typo..lol... Im going to designate an actual meaning to it .....thus creating a new word.. NATZI.... a huge/fat/overweighted/ over bearing...... nazi.. prou:...NAT-ZI you do realise whenever someone corrects grammar and spelling.. they produce phereMOANS... on the skin... and stops one from being laid for about a year...lol ok i made that up.. smiles/peace | |
|
| spelling mistakes! Posted: 5/17/2008 6:11:27 PM | You're right !
Trying to spell words correctly is a proof of respect and education for me. I don't have a perfect English, and some profiles are very hard to understand sometimes.

What were you saying on another thread about really liking this forum cause we say what we like. You better believe it. Maybe the OP did believe it, and was saying what she liked?
Newby alert. Appreciate the warning, but it would be more helpful to put it at the beginning of your posts.
|
| spelling mistakes! Posted: 5/17/2008 6:49:13 PM | OP, this topic has been debated till the cows come home. I am surprised that it wasnt deleted. Something i read in another thread fits well: Kobalt: ". . . I . . . make english spelling mistakes on a regular base. I could use a spell checker but i dont. I check the odd word if i cant remember, thats it. So i am not in a position to critisize anybodies spelling or grammar, right? I have been known to copy in my reply other posters spelling mistakes if they piss me off to take the mickey out of them. They dont notice normally but everybody else does - which makes me a very very bad boy. Then again, they might do it to me and i wouldnt notice - dugh. I am a big boy and i will live through it. Tolerance for wrong spelling aside though, i find it sometimes hard to understand what posters ask or state if the spelling and grammar is far off. Maybe its just me? But seing we all agreed that our tool of communication is typing at each other in a format called 'english', wouldnt any inconsistancy in the agreed format make communication harder and missunderstandings more common? So - within reason and without becoming spelling Nazis - shouldnt we all try to keep our communication within the rules ? . . . " | |

| spelling mistakes! Posted: 5/17/2008 7:12:38 PM | I was gonna stay out of this, and Typical Bloke's similar thread, because as Kobalt said it's been done to death and I think it's unbfknlvbl that a bunch of intelligent grownups have nothing better to talk about than who can spell good/better/best or use the biggest words, longest posts etc. Surely it's what we have to say that counts? It's a forum not an exam. My old flatmate is dyslexic and knows all sorts of stuff that I don't, and cant spell to save his life, so what. Personally I think I'm reasonably intelligent, well read with a decent vocabulary but as others have said, sometimes I just couldn't be bothered checking my spelling, punctuation and capitals, I just throw it at the keyboard the way it runs through my head (so that gives you an idea how scattered I am lol) however I have made a conscious effort to cut back on the text abbreviations since it seems to bother so many people but at the end of the day, who f***n cares? If it's gonna stress you that much, don't read it

Nuff said.
Just making this long enough to be posted.

| spelling mistakes! Posted: 5/17/2008 7:55:56 PM | I agree with Rainbow (and Kobalt) in some ways . . this subject sure has been done to death. So, why do we keep going over the same old ground?
Surely it's what we have to say that counts? It's a forum not an exam. That's exactly right, but as Coal Chamber also points out . .
.........giant slabs of unbroken text . . are sometimes nearly impossible to extract any meaning from. (Oopps . . ending the sentence with a preposition, there . . . sorry) But then you say this . . .
. . . however I have made a conscious effort to cut back on the text abbreviations since it seems to bother so many people but at the end of the day, who f***n cares? If it's gonna stress you that much, don't read it Ya'see, I don't get stressed out about it but now wonder that if you don't really care about it either, and are quite happy that no one reads it, why post it at all? My guess is that you do care, eh.
