| i need help retrieving data off a laptop.. Posted: 5/17/2008 4:39:05 AM | basically, my friend gave me her laptop, the hard drive is apparently kinda messed up. i can't know for sure because nothing seems to work. there's one directory that she absolutely needs, and the rest can be deleted for all she cares. i've tried a few things so far..
-recovery console off an xp corp cd... i can see the directory, and i can rename it. however, i can't move it to a usb hard drive. -i can't boot another operating system off the usb drive, it just bsod's even though the os on the drive is fine, and boots normally on other computers. -the directory was in the documents and settings dir, so i renamed it in recovery console, and then tried to reinstall a copy of windows... fails after checking the disk.
that's what i've tried so far, and nothing seems to work. does anyone have any ideas? all i want to do is boot something, copy the directory over to the usb hard drive, and call it a day :( this thing hates me.

| i need help retrieving data off a laptop.. Posted: 5/17/2008 8:47:55 AM | | This happened to my sister's computer a couple months ago. After spending two weeks trying every which way I could think of to get the data off, I gave up. I tried connecting her hard drive to my desktop with an extra SATA cable, a coworker had this SATA to USB adapter that didn't work either. I ran SeaToolsDOS which will check the drive integrity. Her drive was toast. I'd start with SeaToolsDOS before you waste a lot of time just to learn that there isn't anything you can do. | |

Actually Spinrite is far better to check drive integrity. Anyways it can't hurt trying puppylinux to get the data off it won't take long. Second suggest is running Spinrite, recommend running it over night. Wow sad if you're interesting using Spinrite give me a shout.

| i need help retrieving data off a laptop.. Posted: 5/17/2008 9:08:05 PM | basically, i'm broke right now, and she just quit her job, so we can't buy anything for it. it should be easier than this though... i treid building a windows installation on a cdrw with bartpe but it keeps crashing.
does anyone know of a free program that i can use to basically just boot on a cd image, that'll let me access the hard drive enclosure with a spare hard drive in it? i just need to transfer this directory over.

If it fails, which I hate to say is most likely going to be the case, then there isn't anything you can do that won't cost a lot of money. But if it does pass, then your best bet would be to take her hard drive out and hook it up to another computer and transfer the files that way.
