Posted: 5/17/2008 6:32:07 AM | Sometimes this seems like its an insult, in the way its said, I get told this often and its almost like they are accusing me of lying about age etc. Skin texture etc is in the genes and also helps if you look after it, and general good diet.
Does anyone else feel like this is sometimes said as an insult? | |

It depends on where it’s coming from. In the professional arena, it can imply that you appear too inexperienced to be competent or taken seriously. When that happens it’s important to dispel that initial impression as quickly as possible.
When said by a member of my own gender, particularly someone who doesn’t know me, it’s been my experience that it’s usually envy. There’s nothing I can do about that, and I care very little what strangers think about me so if the intent was to insult, it’s missed the mark  . My friends don’t deliberately insult me or make derogatory comments about my appearance so any remarks they do make are meant as observations or compliments.
When I was single and this was said by a man, it meant one of two things ... a compliment or a concern. I’ve dated men around my own age or a bit older who were mistaken for my father when we were out together in public. That was usually very awkward and embarrassing so I could understand why someone would be worried about that, especially if they were a bit insecure about their own self image. There was nothing I could do about that either, so if a guy couldn’t get past that, we went our separate ways.

I think women hear this type of thing more than guys anyway, and in some cases it's very true. There are many women on here that are holding up extremely well, looking better at 40 than alot of 20-somethings and I, for one, am very happy about that! | |

Now, for the first time in my life, I'm being told that I look younger than what I am. It's a turnaround for me, I don't take offence at that!!

I agree. My guess is that I look about my age, though I do have good days. Unfortunately, I also have bad days. 
I have been told a number of times that I look younger than I am, but I've also had people think I'm older than I am. Though I've heard the younger more than older, just one person thinking I'm older seems to cancel out ten people thinking I'm younger--keeping in mind that the people who say I look younger are often trying to flatter (which *is* much appreciated) while the people who say I look older are just making a little social blunder. So I always go back to thinking I basically look my own age. And I'm okay with that. | |

Posted: 5/17/2008 12:27:09 PM | I get that all the time.. but in my case it is genetic. My mother looks much younger than she is too, as does my 90 year old grandfather. At 38, I'm starting to grey enough where people are more inclined to believe how old I am. Of course if I bother to color it out, then I'm back to late 20's - early 30's.
An insult though? Never.. Do they think I'm lying? Sometimes, but who cares.. As I search the profiles on here I'm often surprised at the pictures and how people look older than they should...

Posted: 5/17/2008 2:16:54 PM | I hear it all the time too.... I take it as a compliment. How can one take it any other way but as a compliment ? At 47 I have all of my hair and not one gray hair in it. Most think I am yanking their chain when I tell them my age. Sometimes it can be a slight problem with the women I have been romantically involved with. When they eventually see my naked body their insecurity kicks in and feel their own body does not stack up to mine and they suddenly feel physically inferior......and older.
Needless to say I feel fortunate and count my blessings everyday.....

Now I know this would be hard for a 22 year old to digest but 40 is not old. I have been both 22 and 40 and can say from experience...... 40 is not old. Actually 40 is a very cool age. You will understand when you are in your 40`s. That is if one is lucky enough to make it to 40........

Posted: 5/18/2008 7:13:32 AM | Well....when I was in my 20's I didn't look my age (looked younger)...it didn't bother me very much. I just learned to live with it...sometimes I didn't feel as "sexy" as some...but i didn't worry about that too much at that age...I suppose if anything I got treated like a kid and still do...I look younger and am only 5'2"...this may explain my immaturity at times to bust out laughing over things only to have everyone stop and stare and then I tone my laughter down and realize I should have laughed a lil softer and feel embarrassed (have done this often at work)...I can talk with the young people sometimes and they forget I'm older...oh well...i use that priviledge to give them good advice
If someone gives you a compliment in this area...it is always good to be modest and I always try to remain modest about the fact I look younger ...the aging process is certainly not the same for everyone and tomorrow may bring a few wrinkles... | |

Posted: 5/18/2008 10:53:39 AM | Take it as the compliment it is. I'm not sure if it has the difficulties on dating for women as it does for men. Nothing is more annoying than having someone find out your age and then not wanting to talk to you. Not just younger people!
But enjoy it while you have it and have fun with it! | |
