| Hold On, Sweetie! Posted: 5/17/2008 12:06:57 PM | Apparently, Mr. Obama has a few issues with gender PC. I feel the same way about this that I feel about a monkey shirt, people make make too much over nothing, little things.
WXYZ) - Reporters on the presidential campaign trail are buzzing about Barack Obama calling WXYZ's Peggy Agar "sweetie" during a tour Wednesday of a Chrysler plant in Sterling Heights.
The comment came during a tour of the plant when the Democratic presidential candidate tried to brush off a question from Agar about help for autoworkers. "Senator, how are you going to help the American autoworkers," Agar asked Obama. "Hold on one second, sweetie," he replied, explaining he would answer in a later media availability.
In a posting on the New York Times Political Blog titled "Obama: Hold On, Sweetie," reporter Jim Rutenberg pointed out this wasn't the first time Obama used the word: "Back in Pennsylvania in early April, Senator Barack Obama took some heat for calling a female factory worker 'sweetie,' in Allentown."
Obama's comment to Agar has also been discussed by reporters for The Atlantic, Chicago Tribune, and Newsday.
Mr. Obama apologized and acknowledged he has a bad habit of doing it.
The guy is human and makes a few minor errors, but then, don't we all? For most of us, it isn't blasted over every t.v. station and newspaper in the world.

I beleive this story falls under the catagory : Who the h*ll cares?

| Hold On, Sweetie! Posted: 5/17/2008 12:39:49 PM | | Just another scenario where someone somewhere has to **** about what or how someone says something....It's a freakin vicious neverending cycle. Once we stop paying so much attanetion to the bullshit perhaps it won;t be such a bog deal...who knows! | |

"Senator, how are you going to help the American autoworkers," Agar asked Obama.
Never answered the Question...
Is the Question Bill $hit ?

| Hold On, Sweetie! Posted: 5/17/2008 2:05:41 PM | | While it may not be news worthy it's funny and makes me see the guy has a human side and alittle more sensititvy than I had thought, important information when considering who to vote for.. | |
|
| Hold On, Sweetie! Posted: 5/17/2008 2:14:58 PM | While it most likely isn't going to sit well with certain militant feminists, it's rather reassuring to me that when he answers absentmindedly he uses an endearment. Now, if he had said, "Hold on, b!tch" THAT would be a red flag.... | |

| Hold On, Sweetie! Posted: 5/17/2008 2:21:26 PM | Yeah, perfect example of people trying to make something out of nothing, really.
Okay, 15,000 people died in China and they need help. In Burma, there are up to 100,000 deaths with current torrential rains to make matters worse. Our troops need to go get rid of a few generals over there who are not alllowing aid for the people. Gosh, it would be great to have a presiding officer that could hear or see anything and is not serving as a human statue and has no clue as to getting his priorities in order; until a person that is alive like Obama comes to the rescue. What perfect timing to turn our troops into the service people they joined the Service for; and help those in REAL need.
But then, if Obama starts calling women "sweetie," what will happen next, oh, the humanity.

| Hold On, Sweetie! Posted: 5/17/2008 2:26:29 PM | Really much ado about nothing. So he said sweetie. Big whoop. Check out the latest. I wonder if the media will jump on this quote of his.
"The nice thing is we're going to have four more months, five more months of active campaigning where you can watch and see if I am consistent, do I stay honest," said Obama. "Let me take your advice and let me make sure that I try to stay honest in what is sometimes a dishonest profession."

So, he is going to try to be honest.
What was he doing before he was trying to be honest???
Nope, sweetie gets more news. Go figure.

female reporters deserve more than being dismissed with a "hold on sweetie"
unless she was under 10, it was a patronizing comment
think it is nothing?
go to work and try talking to another female worker like that...

| Hold On, Sweetie! Posted: 5/17/2008 7:39:14 PM | He admits having a habit of calling people 'sweetie' and has apologized ....the reporter said she was not at all offended by the 'sweetie' comment.
Let's not make this 'Sweetiegate'!

| Hold On, Sweetie! Posted: 5/17/2008 7:45:56 PM | Wait, we get all pissed off when someone prints a monkey shirt and we call it racist, but yet when Barrack Hussein Obama calls a female reporter "sweetie" we don't get all pissed off over sexism?
You are either going to get pissed off by both or not going to care about both. You can't have your cake and eat it to.
Women, this is your Democratic candidate, basically advocating for women to go back to the kitchen cooking men dinner and being barefoot and pregnant. WHERE IS THE OUTRAGE?
|
| Hold On, Sweetie! Posted: 5/17/2008 9:00:30 PM | Perhaps, it's because I also have a habit of calling people (both male & female) Sweetie, Hon, Baby & Boo.....I simply see nothing sexist about it.
On the other hand, I happen to live in the city where that bar owner was selling the monkey t-shirts and you see from my post that he has a reputation. I also happen to be black and a little bit more in tune with the issues of racism no matter how subtle.

| Hold On, Sweetie! Posted: 5/18/2008 1:45:22 PM | | I don't see what the big deal is, so he called a female reporter "sweetie"...would we be posting on here if a reporter said to Obama" Hey Bro whats your position on the economy?"... | |

Edisto, sweetie,
This whole issue is nothing but a tempest in a teapot.

| Hold On, Sweetie! Posted: 5/18/2008 6:37:40 PM | | If McCain had said it, 'dismissive' would be the buzzword in the media... | |
|
| Hold On, Sweetie! Posted: 5/18/2008 8:19:08 PM | uninterested, d1ck head, the whole thing shows that Obama looked at her as a woman first and a professional second, and that, especially when you're running for the highest office in this country against a woman is condescending and is just a subtle form of gender bias- | |
|
| Hold On, Sweetie! Posted: 5/18/2008 9:48:00 PM | What buggs me is people judging Obama like this. Some people sound so critical like the lady just above me, it's repugnant that they would make a big case out of something like this. It's not Borack who is doing "gender bias", it's those making a big deal out of this. Borack Obama is your Natiions only hope presidentially for a successful future of any sorts. He is the only one that can save America and bring atleast alittle dignity back to that place that over the last century has just degerated and deterioted.
Borack Obama is a class act, and it will be a robbery if he doesn't become the President of the United States. The United States NEEDS a President like Borack Obama, and he is one of the only politians that don't have their heads up their ass.

| Hold On, Sweetie! Posted: 5/18/2008 10:12:43 PM | "unless she was under 10, it was a patronizing comment

This and similar comments are merely signs of someone who really needs more fiber in their diet....or a really good laxative. As has been noted: Much too much ado about nothing (with apologies to Billy Shakespeare!)
|
| Hold On, Sweetie! Posted: 5/19/2008 6:49:33 AM |
Much too much ado about nothing to a bunch of guys, maybe
to many professional women, it's patronizing-
and since you guys don't put forth any effort to understand that it may be considered patronizing by some women, it shows your lack of consideration and understanding, so I can fully understand your bubba mentality in thinking it's "much ado about nothing" attitude~
|
| Hold On, Sweetie! Posted: 5/19/2008 7:35:30 AM | It's a habit of speech... one he'll be sure to work on and change.
Is Agar one of the regular reporters on the campaign trail?
If Agar didn't feel patronized by the comment and she was there and saw/felt the context of it... why should we be patronized on her behalf?
|
| Hold On, Sweetie! Posted: 5/19/2008 7:42:57 AM | to many professional women, it's patronizing-
We hear your bitchin sweetie and could not agree more with it. That's why he said he was sorry and the actual phone call was put on TV. That should appease you, well, at least until after the general election.

| Hold On, Sweetie! Posted: 5/19/2008 8:07:10 AM | | You even things that seem trivial sometimes reveal our true feelings and beliefs..maybe he is sexist who knows. But if a woman was disturbed by this statement then maybe there is actually a need for this to be discussed as it may be in some way indicative of his true feelings...Would you all be upset if a reporter made a statement like this to Obama "Hey Bro whats your position on womens rights?"... | |
|
| Hold On, Sweetie! Posted: 5/19/2008 8:31:19 AM | Hey Edisto... Patronizing eh??? ....not to make this into an argument as that is not my intent, but many women patronize and call guys all sorts of names every day, why all of a sudden if a gentleman kindly asks a lady to wait by say "hold on, sweetie",why is that all of a sudden considered bad? Only to people with big inflated egos would that be an insult.
I have had many women say that to me even in my adult years, and I never took that as an insult, I was actually pleased that they refferred to me as that. But I surely never once felt insulted by it. I don't have an inflated ego about it.
|
| Hold On, Sweetie! Posted: 5/19/2008 9:14:08 AM | | That's only because men are not a protected politically correct group like women. Men have no right to feel patronized but women do. | |
