| Does TV affect you negatively? Posted: 5/18/2008 9:24:20 PM | | After 30+ years of exposure to television I've stopped watching it, except on rare occasions. Rare being perhaps a week or two at most in a years time. For me, even the slightest exposure to broadcasts (whether via satellite, cable, or antenna) affect me in the same way as if I had an intellect dimmer wired to my brain and while watching television it automatically turns itself toward the dimmest setting. Might sound a little odd but I can honestly say that to me, it's highly offensive in a demeaning way. I'm thinking being called the "boob tube" so many years ago was right on the mark when describing the end result of a lifetime in front of a television. | |

| Does TV affect you negatively? Posted: 5/18/2008 10:14:54 PM | | I don't care to watch tv these days either. All there is to watch is depressing war news, death and destruction, horrible reality tv, and these terrible excuses for cartoons. The news is all biased anyways. | |

| Does TV affect you negatively? Posted: 5/18/2008 11:19:02 PM | A couple of points. First, I heard recently that after watching ~30 minutes of television your brain activity changes significantly (this experiment was done on children). You go into a trance-like state and all sorts of hormone levels start to change. The recommendations, based on the results of the study, were to allow no more than 30 minutes of TV watching per day for children... i don't see why the same principle shouldn't apply to adults.
My second point is based on my own observations of the men in my life. I have noticed a direct correlation between the amount of TV a guy watches and his perception of female beauty, that is, the more he watches the less likely he is to consider a woman beautiful. I think it's tragic that we are so addicted to a substance that decreases our ability to see beauty in the world. Do you find women more attractive now that you have stopped watching?

| Does TV affect you negatively? Posted: 5/19/2008 4:17:04 AM | About all I use my TV for is movies, the occasional cartoon, and Red Sox baseball.
I have an easy enough time watching programming that does not effect me in a negative manor. I am a negative enough person without TV. I don't need TV to make it any worse.

| Does TV affect you negatively? Posted: 5/19/2008 8:13:35 AM | I find when I sit and stare at a television for more than a few hours, it starts to say bad things about me and that kinda brings me down.

There is no answer to this question according to the way I think.
Beautiful women and the simplest among them are beautiful one and all IF they have inner beauty. The filter of my eyes is off according to most, though I've seen a gal with a gentle nature that wasn't so great to look at but because of her ways she was far more attractive than many gals I've seen that are trailing salivating men in tow. Aye, that gal was a catch...
As for what you said Beaugrand®™©, hahaa! That's hilarious!

| Does TV affect you negatively? Posted: 5/19/2008 8:30:38 AM | I don't think TV affects me in a negative way at all. I keep the TV just to have noise in the house most of the time and think most shows are garbage TV anyway. I do watch my news shows cos I have a keen interest in current events. I watch Law and Order and I watch sports. There are not many good sitcoms these days and I am not a fan of 'reality' shows.
Take away my baseball, especially my Red Sox games and then, you will see negativity. Watching the game on MLB Gameday just is not as entertaining!

| Does TV affect you negatively? Posted: 5/19/2008 8:51:06 AM | Tv is far too boring, plenty of reruns and the reality shows. I watch youtube and the odd movie but that is about it. I prefer to be on the computer being interactive or workout. I used to watch countless hours of tv as a child, it made my school grades lower. One of my friend's father didn't even have a tv in their home, not because they couldn't afford one but they views tv as a dumb box. Every child in that home has done well in school and have good jobs. If you want your kids to do well in school ditch the tv and video games. | |

| Does TV affect you negatively? Posted: 5/19/2008 9:35:42 AM | | We went for 3 years with no cable. I decided 2 months ago to get it again and it has caused nothign but problems with moods etc of everyone in the house, the desire to laze about, the kids bicker constantly complain of being "bored" when they can't watch it etc. These were never issues when we didn't have it. SO not only am I cancelling cable again I am selling our tv's (we have one hooked up to tv and one set up for video games) and the video game system. We home school and I have found that while having the tv is nice for some educational videos over all it makes the kids not want to do their work, or read or use their imaginations to read. IT also makes me irratible, mainly wanting the kids to be ultra quiet lest I miss something ont he shows kwim. So forget it, tv for our family at least goes against those things I value as a family such as togetherness etc. | |

I think I drove past your yard once, with all those busted TV sets every which way.

| Does TV affect you negatively? Posted: 5/19/2008 9:58:37 AM | I went thru period where I didn't like watching the news...I tend to catch the highlights..sometimes that isn't a good idea I read the internet news a lot..that way I can see the news piece I want to read and read it...Don't have to listen to all the other stuff...Not sure I'd reccommend that to everybody but sometimes if need a break from all the bad news it works...
I recently hooked up dishnet at my house...been without cable since 2004 b/c I moved to rural area...I did notice the commercials are better on dishnet....they don't tend to "get on my nerves" like some of the other channel commercials did...seem to be a lil less nonsense and leaned towards actually being informative commercials
I find only a few sitcoms I really like...I tend to find the older ones from 80's and 90's are better...even my son likes watching the old sitcoms with me...he says they are funnier too...lol (yeah i'm stuck in the 80's)
If it makes you feel better to turn the tv off then go for it...just don't forget to pick up the newspaper or something....don't wanna miss important stuff.....it is always good to rest your mind occassionally

| Does TV affect you negatively? Posted: 5/19/2008 10:34:16 AM | | Aye, stuck in the eighties. I can relate being that for some reason I find myself reviewing Sledgehammer episodes, The Equalizer, and Blackadder with a bit of Doctor Who (mainly Tom baker) thrown in for good measure. | |

| Does TV affect you negatively? Posted: 5/19/2008 3:31:50 PM | yeah its very depressing, the soaps are full of people at each others throats, the news is death and gloom.
its like its designed to resign you to darkness and emptiness. most programmes are about negativity and the very word 'programmes' says it all in itself.

Do you find women more attractive now that you have stopped watching?
I am not sure if it is a matter of watching TV or not. Rather, I think there are a few types of people that stop watching TV for specific reasons. I hardly ever watch TV, and I have a quite different view of the world and what I find to be socially acceptable. Also, I do find that my taste in women is quite different from everybody else my age.
So.. I did everything but really answer the question. Haha, oh well.

I heard recently that after watching ~30 minutes of television your brain activity changes significantly (this experiment was done on children). You go into a trance-like state and all sorts of hormone levels start to change. I find this happening just sitting in the park on a warm day watching women walk by. It must be the TV waves in the air.

| Does TV affect you negatively? Posted: 5/19/2008 8:38:46 PM | Watching TV doesn't affect me negatively at all ... my tin foil hat protects me from all the harmful rays. | |

| Does TV affect you negatively? Posted: 5/19/2008 9:12:32 PM | | ^^^^ All mine did was pick up stations from foreign language satellites. I remember a study saying it put you into a brainwave state similar to lite sleep. I've cut back because I agree, most of whats on is crap. However PBS still delivers some good stuff, and sci fi helps keep my imagination in top shape. | |

| Does TV affect you negatively? Posted: 5/19/2008 10:21:07 PM | I was just given 3,000 video tapes. Mostly old classic B&W movies and some terrific old comedies.
I'll get back to you in a few years. :-))))))
I'm hardly watching any live TV now. Even the specialty channels are nothing but reruns. How many times per week can you watch the same episode of the same show on the same channel? Even worse, watch the same show on 5 different networks! ZZZZZZZZ!!!! After midnight there is hardly any channel below #40 that is not a infomercial and above that repeats of the same shows that were already shown 3 times that day.

| Does TV affect you negatively? Posted: 5/19/2008 10:23:54 PM | I have said it before and I will say it again... TV is like life... you get from it what you choose.
There are 500 channels out there. If all you choose to watch are soaps and stupid crap then... hmm... is it the tv... or you that is stupid?
I, personally have learned a lot of things from television. Watch shows that are conducive to education if you wish to learn.
No different than reading a book... garbage in / garbage out.
Good grief... | |

| Does TV affect you negatively? Posted: 5/20/2008 3:46:26 AM | | It won't hurt you as long as you realize it's all just fantasy to cater to a mindless group of sheep that need to be entertained, With that mindset you won't be led into the bullshit. Especially the News ! always remember who has to gain ( agenda ) from the things they tell you and show you. | |

| Does TV affect you negatively? Posted: 5/20/2008 10:03:22 AM | My parents raised me to love to read. So, when they had the cable turned off when I was 9 I didn't really miss it. Still don't miss it. The only time my tv is on in my house is if I flip it on for my inside dog when I am leaving. VERY RARELY...maybe every 2-3 months I'll hear of something coming on that I'm interested in watching...but most of the time I turn it right back off b/c it wasn't what I thought it would be. Welder and I but a movie every month, as our treat to ourselves and I'll watch those. But that's it. I have 5 stations on my TV and 3 are full of static. I keep it that way so that my daughter will not be one of those that sits and watches TV all day.
I've never quite understood why people wouldn't rather read instead of watching all the mess on TV.
