| Male Nurses Posted: 5/19/2008 10:01:50 AM | | Might be a stupid question. I am not a sexist but I am wondering what the general populace thinks about Male nurses. I just got out of the Marines and I am trying to decide on a new career path. I am looking at teaching ,but after some talk with my sister who just graduated a nursing program. It seems that nursing would be a fairly lucrative and interesting carreer. | |

| Male Nurses Posted: 5/19/2008 10:11:03 AM | | who cares what the populace thinks LOL.. If you can handle the job go for it. Male nurses are more and more common and speaking from experience more and more are coming from the uniformed services. Be aware however reverse sexism is still alive and well expect to deal with all heavy lifting issues :). | |

| Male Nurses Posted: 5/19/2008 10:16:49 AM | Based only on my own experience, every male nurse I worked with was one of 2 things:
a) lazier than sh*t and thought it was beneath him to perform any physical work ("woman's work!") or unbecoming tasks (emptying bed pans, wiping bums, etc)
b) had a God-complex.......and felt he was superior and basically just a half-step below being a doctor LOL
For that reason alone, I developed a lack of use/respect for them. I'm sure they're not all that way.

| Male Nurses Posted: 5/19/2008 10:19:48 AM | Hi Bob before you consider nursing you have to take some considerations. I'm a male nurse and forgot some things before getting into this career. Remember the nurse's work schedule is not Mon- Fri 9 to 5. You'll work all shifts including weekends, days, evenings and nights, many holidays and every other Christmas. When I considered nursing I forgot that hospitals don't close. It's open 24 hrs 365 days/ year. Nursing is a demanding job and many times you don't get the recognition for your hard work. Being a man you'll be assigned the more difficult patients and many women will refuse care from you because your a man. You'll work understaffed on many occasions and even when you do have vacation time, it is many times denied because lack of staff. You do get the vacation pay, but it's better to have time off than vacation pay which is eaten up by taxes. Just make considerations before starting any career. Good luck

| Male Nurses Posted: 5/19/2008 10:33:53 AM | | I used to work at a psych hospital and they are constantly looking for nurses. Even at $30 an hour they can't get enough. They need lots of male nurses because they often have to hold people down and jam them with a needle against their will. Sound like fun? | |

| Male Nurses Posted: 5/19/2008 10:47:12 AM | No probs with it here. My cousin is about to finish up his clinicals and he is SUCH a manly man. ;)

| Male Nurses Posted: 5/19/2008 11:35:34 AM | | I love male nurses. They're the biggest flirts ever, too. | |

| Male Nurses Posted: 5/19/2008 6:38:59 PM | Yes....Nursing at this time is very lucrative.....WE just don't have enough !!!.....We bring them in from foreign countries in order to staff our hospitals...However, if you have never worked in the field.....You need to check it out...before you dedicate yourself to the schooling....try donating your time in a hospital before you make a decision or commitment.
We are talking about $100,000 + a year in my area......Add on ..... all the benefits to that !!!! That's why the foreigner's are taking the job's....!!
Just FYI....I have worked with...both gay...and non gay male nurses....don't worry about that....

| Male Nurses Posted: 5/20/2008 6:38:25 AM | I don't have a problem with a man becoming a nurse.
Actually, nearly 15 years ago after the birth of my son, my nurse was a man. At that point, it no longer mattered what dignity I no longer had. I also figured, he'd seen many women after giving birth, what was one more? Yes, it was embarassing, but it would have been the same way had it been a female.
But, women have jobs that are heavily populated by men, why not the opposite way as well?

| Male Nurses Posted: 5/20/2008 3:55:52 PM | My Father had to have a heart cath a couple years ago. His whole team of Nurses were male. All hot and tatted up male Nurses. I dont even remember the day except when I got home I think my eyes were bleeding from staring. He loved it too- he felt so absolutely comfortable that day. It was awesome. Im sure there are men out there like my Father who welcomed being taken care of by another male- just like we like female Docs and Nurses taking care of us.

| Male Nurses Posted: 5/20/2008 4:21:03 PM | | The one male nurse I have know well is a caring, empathetic man and I would be happy to have him be my nurse. I don't think there is near the "stigma" of being a male nurse (gay was one when I was younger) as there used to be--most I know are of military backgrounds like OP. | |

| Male Nurses Posted: 5/20/2008 5:01:32 PM | Health Care is the field to go into right now. Nursing pays well, but it's got to be a job that you love. Research the hospitals and care centres in your area, find out which practice of medicine you want to go into. Practical Nurses make more money than Health Care Aides, but to be Registered Nurse takes about four years of schooling (at least in Canada). Nurses are pretty well paid (male or female). If you enjoy it, I say go for it.
Not sure if nurses actually make $100,000....make sure to do your research into all health care fields before making your decision.

| Male Nurses Posted: 5/20/2008 5:08:06 PM | I tell ya....
I have no problems with them normally.......
Except when they're really hot and your in your last month of pregnancy dreading that scale, and they end up being the ones weighing you in before the doc sees you...not fun...

| Male Nurses Posted: 5/20/2008 5:13:43 PM | If you enjoy cleaning up sh*t and wiping a$$es, then go for it!
Good luck! | |
|
| Male Nurses Posted: 5/20/2008 5:16:04 PM | I know nursing supervisors who make 100k.
And Tee - hot male nurses lust after preggo chicks ALL THE TIME. It's their biggest fantasy. Trust me.
|
| Male Nurses Posted: 5/20/2008 5:54:07 PM | My cousin is studying to be a nurse, and he is a good man. I am too squeamish to ever be a nurse. Regardless of a nurse's gender, I think they are among the bravest people of all. I could never deal with blood, vomiting, or wiping people's behinds. My hat's off to ALL nurses!! | |
|
| Male Nurses Posted: 5/20/2008 9:17:03 PM | Well you know what the hospital motto is for male nurses... Don't ask, don't tell.
I know a couple male nurses (one is my brother in-law) and they are good guys and love their job. I'm sure you will get some flack from some of your buds but it's not really up to them.
|
| Male Nurses Posted: 5/20/2008 10:16:26 PM | My friend's husband is a male nurse. He's a bit more than a nurse because he works in Nuclear Medicine so it's a specific branch but he really likes it, he's good with his patients.
As long as you like working with people and helping people, why not?
|
| Male Nurses Posted: 5/20/2008 11:52:54 PM | | I love male nurses, you can take care of me anyday! But on a serious note, we could use a lot more male nurses, and nurses aides | |
|
| Male Nurses Posted: 5/21/2008 5:51:20 AM | I could say the same thing about female nurses- all they do is ****,**** ****..... and never change their profession. When my hospital wanted to take away our pay and benefits, I had to organize a bargaining unit to fight for our rights. Most of the FEMALE nurses wouldn't speak out, and in the end, they benefitted from the work I did to save their pay...now they are in management like the good little ass-kissers they are... | Male Nurses Posted: 5/21/2008 7:18:23 AM | Before you even think about nursing you must ask yourself 'Why would you want to be a nurse?'. If you think it would be personally rewarding then go for it. I know of many male nurses who are very content in their jobs. You must keep in mind that nurses must undergo certain tasks that many people could not stomach. It's not only about administering medication and changing a dressingas your sister would know. My advice would be to do some on the job training before you decide that this is in fact the career for you. | |

| Male Nurses Posted: 5/21/2008 8:55:11 AM | I hope you dont become a burn out. Theres enough of those type of nurses there. The mean ones. | |
|
| Male Nurses Posted: 5/26/2008 10:44:02 AM | I say GO FOR IT!!!! I love my career and one of the best nurses i've ever worked with is a man. I'm very blessed, I have worked for 3 years with the same crew, 3 women 1 man, we are all more like family than co-workers. Although we do work long hours we enjoy them for the most part . He doesn't think he is too good to do anything. We have wiped asses together, worked codes together, been in some horrible situations together and we always come out of it together. We cover each other, that's what good nurses do.....we work together to make it thru.
As for the hours and pay.......I do work long hours BUT....i'm off every Fri-Sun, and I work the ER and the floor at a hospital. So the hours depend on where you decide to work. The money is nice but you can't be in it for just a paycheck. As long as you follow your heart you can't go wrong. Good Luck and Best Wishes.
