What about the personal ads on Craigslist? Page 1 of 4    (1, 2, 3, 4)
I was just on Craigslist & I saw about to answer someones personal profile when I realized that the profile might be a fake. So this why I'm asking this question.

I was wondering if anyone had ever met & dated someone who posted their profile on Craigslist?

I'm wary about answering one of those ads because you have to e-mail them & I have a couple of problems with that. For one, I don't want to e-mail just anyone because who knows if someone is just out there fishing for people to send their SPAM to. Another reason why I don't want to e-mail just anyone is because I don't know if some of those people are internet scammers or not.

I have not responded to one of those yet, but if you do consider replying to one of them, there is one simple way to prevent spam.

Ok, well it won't prevent spam, but it will divert it from your regular email.

Go to a free webmail service (yahoo, msn/hotmail/live, gmail, etc) and create a new account.
Use this new account to reply to the ad.
After several emails when you confirm that this person is not a scammer, give them your regular email address to continue the conversation. Explain that you use the email address to reduce spam going to your preferred email address.

This has an added benefit. If you ever need to submit your email address to a site in order to utilize some content, you have this email account to sacrifice in the event that it generates spam.

A vast majority of the w4m ads on CL especially in Seattle are spammers. Here are some ways to tell, if the wording in the ad is used repeatedly in other ads, but changed just a little. If the ad is 2 or 3 sentences and she wants you to "reply and I'll send you more", or "all you have to do is ask", or "hit me up and I'll tell you more". If the photo doesn't match the age, she looks 36 but says she's 25. If the wording in the ad is vague or is out of time. Like she mentions wanting to see a football game and it's July. If the physical format of her ad is like others', meaning 2 or 3 sentences, then she writes "hit me back if you wanna know more" and it's placed in the same spot of her ad, just like several others. The other key is, on the Seattle CL, the spammers for whatever reason keep using kitsap/west puget all the time. Tonight the spammer is using different locales but here are some titles they are using:
art, love, life - 19 (Kitsap / West Puget),good things in life are hard to find - 25 (Seattle,Carpe Diem - Seize the day - 22 (Seattle). Check it out and you'll be able to see which ones are real and which ones are fake. Having another e mail address is good too, that way you won't sacrifice your real address.

I have. I've posted and replied to posts. This was 3 years ago though. But like every other site, there's good and there's bad. I could write so much on the positives of CL but I won't get into the personal stuff. Just take a shot, answer the ad, it isn't too hard to spot a scammer these days anyway.

I've posted some ads on craigslist, but haven't had much success. Although the success I did have was quite good.

Several months back, I was living with people who were like parents to me, my car didn't run, I was unemployed, etc. When I would read the w4m ads (the ones that weren't spam), they all said things like "Don't contact me if you don't have a job" or "Must have your own car" or "Please tell me you don't live with your parents." Out of frustration and a twisted sense of humor, I posted an ad entitled "I'm everything you always said you never wanted" (paraphrasing the movie Fools Rush In where he says "You're everything I never knew I always wanted"). In it, I was quite frank and honest about where I was in my life. I expected zero responses. I got a few.

Of the responses I got, most were brief joking replies, a few were obvious spammers, but one stood out from the rest. She displayed a level of intelligence and a sense of humor that I appreciated. We emailed back and forth several times, began talking on the phone, and eventually met in person. We connected really well, and things heated up between us for awhile, but I wasn't really ready to be jumping into a new relationship, and my personal issues were hurting her, so we decided to leave it as friends (genuinely, not the "I never want to talk to you, but let's call it friends to ease the blow" variety). She is now one of my closest friends and I shall always treasure her for that.

I've seen ladies from here on Craigslist, a couple under the services section. Here they are looking for a nice guy, there they are looking for a naughty boy that had a stressful week.

A friend met someone on Craigslist that she dated for about 10 months.

I met my walking buddy on there - she's female but she's normal and we've become pretty decent friends.

I've put up an ad on there for someone to attend a summer festival with and I got lots of responses and found someone to go with.

I think every site has bad and good people. It's up to us to sort through them.

Your best bet would probably be to post about doing an activity rather than a general post in the personals section. There are usually a LOT of posts from guys in there so it would be difficult to get noticed. But if you post in the activities section for whatever you enjoy doing, I think you'd have a better chance at getting a serious reply. And then you can sort of go out on a "date" without it actually being a date. And if that goes well and you like the person, just go from there like usual. Less spammers in the activities section as well.

And don't write your post out as though it sounds like a date either or people might flag it ;) Just say you're looking to play tennis or catch a movie.
And the suggestion above about using a free address like hotmail is also a good one.

I haven't a clue what the dealio is with CraigsList. I went there once to see what the buzz is about and I still fail to understand it.

My ex (LTR of 8 yrs) met his now-wife on Craigs List. Claimed he met her in the politics/athiest chats. They met, she left her husband, he broke up with me, I moved out, she moved in, and they got married as soon as her divorce was final. I thought CL was only for used couches and for cheap rugs, but I guess you can find everything there..... me, I still use it for furniture and car parts.... LOL!!!!

I was just on Craigslist & I saw about to answer someones personal profile when I realized that the profile might be a fake. So this why I'm asking this question.

Excuse me while I have a laugh:
Now, I'm laughing because ads on HERE could be fakes, too. You just never know until you try. The worst that can happen, though, is that you get an e-mail in return wanting you to pay for someone to come here from overseas or something. I mean, I don't think it could actually HURT you to answer one of those ads, unless you send someone money or personal information.

A harsh rule of thumb: Just about every ad with a picture is a scam.

Only the ones who look like they could be models - because then the picture probably IS of some random model.

Just create an alternate email account instead of your main one to use when you email people.

I can say in all honestly about the whole postings on CL that yes.... there are the occasional (well, actually TONS) of postings that are fake but fortunately for the people who use the site voice their opinions and flag the postings before anything serious can come of it.

As for meeting people off of the site, I have actually met a couple of people and truth be told.... it wasnt that bad, mind you we will remain platonic but hey who am I to complain of making another friend.

I will say this... out of the 2 months I have had postings on CL I have had more success in responses MUCH more than this site for over how many years I have been on here..... how sad is that!

In the end, if you dont feel comfy about answering one of those ads then trust your instincts, but ..... from time to time its a little bit fun taking that risk knowing that it could be that possibility of what you are actually looking for without the BS.

Hi, Petrock,

I just posted an ad on CL in SF bayarea. I did not post my photo, but asked for one. I did this on Sunday afternoon and by Sunday night I had 10 plus emails with photos (not a bad haul for an old broad!). I returned my photos (the same here on POF) and have only heard back from 4 men. Two of the men I hope to meet as friends (one because of the age difference and one is going thru a divorce). The other two, well, well see if they email pack that they actually want to meet.

My advice is to post your photo. But from what I've heard, it's pretty flaky out there. But, that seems to be my experience on all of the sites (Yahoo, eHarmony, POF).

Ironically, I did get one "hate" mail from someone who assumed I was a fake (a 51 y/o woman is the figment of someone imagination?! I think not..).

So my 2cents worth is to go in with no expectations and maybe you'll be pleasantly surprised. I do think this medium can work well because I do know of 5 couples that met and married someone they met online (various sites). And, I've met some good male buddies this way (the same ones that eventually met and married a woman they met online.

Best of luck!

I posted a reply to a CL w4m ad here in New York and just like with the other markets, you encounter scam-bots plugging their sites and so forth. Seems more than usual.

I did meet one female on it last year, who seemed alright just that we didn't hit it off.

I don't really have high expectations with that particular site, but if you feel you can get something out of it, be my guest.

I don't think CL is any better or worse than POF. Many of the things that happen on CL can also happen on POF.

1. People who have a laundry list of requirements.
2. People who lie about their age, height, weight, marital status etc.
3. Rude, vulgar emails.

The only major difference is that some of the ads ( especially the w4m ads ) are spam. However there are probably some fake profiles on POF as well.

Your typical female on Craigslist:

Hi,

So I don't normally do this kind of thing at all, but here goes. I'm 4'11, sexy and short but also BBW. By BBW I don't mean that I'm curvy... I mean that I'm about 300 pounds because I eat chips all day and write my emo poetry. OH BY THE WAY... I'm into art, tattoos, piercings, and poetry. All this really means is that I probably don't have a job and like to sit at home a lot. Most of our dates will really be us sitting in my apartment with my 15 cats and writing emo poetry, but for the sake of this post I'm going to say that I'm fun, outgoing, and friendly - despite my total social awkwardness.

I say I'm not shallow, but in reality I'm expecting you to look like Brad Pitt.

Your pic gets mine.

The first guy I met on Craiglist, I ended up having a 3 month "dating" relationship with. He was really nice, we were both grieving over recent breakups and we hit it off. We lived a bit too far from each other and he ended up finding someone closer to him and closer to what he was looking for in a woman. I was bummed, but shit happens. I am still friends with him and talk to him from time to time.
I've also been accused of being "spam" on CL. I've sent my picture and they say "that's not you". Well of course it is me, but the spammers have ruined it. Just cause I'm attractive and take a good picture doesn't mean I'm spam. So then I get pissed off at being told I am a fake and it just ruins it.
Ce la vie.

More than half the people on CL are a waste of time, if they're real, to begin with! However, I have a girlfriend who happens to be quite lucky when it comes to finding decent guys to go out with on there, so I guess it's basically a hit or miss situation. My experience has been quite the opposite of hers - nothing but fakers and guys just wanting to waste my time! I'd rather stick with POF - I'm not having much luck here, either, but at least I can actually TELL who the scammers are on here!

Shhhhhhhhh..... don't be telling people to use an alternate address on Craigslist.... see, this little secret is one of the best screening tools around. The uninformed use their main email and it has their whole name in it, sometimes even their employer (people, what are you doing answering personal ads on your WORK COMPUTER?). Personally, I call emailing a Craigslist personal with your full name on your employer's email service "failing the IQ test."

So then the experienced Craigslist dater enters that name into the circuit court database and finds out they have had 6 DUI's (why is that even possible? shouldn't they be in jail for that?) or a history of battery and disorderly conduct. And you don't write back.

Let's just have this be our little secret!

craigslist home of the scammers, spammers, escorts, trolls, pic collectors , sex freaks and the occasional real connect.
reading some of the posts can be funny though. read through the missed connections and "strictly platonic". i dont know about other areas but ny and long island cls strictly platonic is never platonic when m4m m4w.
