Pop Up Error Box When Editting Your Profile
Posted: 1/12/2009 9:58:28 PM
Dear fishy administrators......The recent auto message is
both ironical and offensive...I have had no trouble in contacting females on this site..based on my present profile....( eg I am on a lot of favorites lists)...go and read it ....and if yu are basing the auto reply on if I have a pic up ..yes i did before...but I should be given the option of not having one up????

I am trying to change my interest from "email/chat" to" friends". what is yr probleM ???????????

"""" People will read both your profile AND message when deciding if they should write back to you. If your profile is really lame it won't matter how good your message is.

2. Talk about your goals/aspirations
3. Talk about youself and what makes you unique""""""

I think the site's been compromised dude.

I'm getting the same message.

Either that or they're really trying to give it to us LOL

Just make sure that there's no personal info in your profile or its setup that will compromise your own web-browsing security.

By the way, that's a big assumption on my part...and ya know what they say about assuming

Anyways, I'm trying to edit my page and I'm getting a very...ummm...unprofessional error message that states;

Are you trying to be funny?

Please enter a PROPER description

After I flipped the bird to my laptop's monitor I promptly forwarded a message to Admin.

Peculiarly, I haven't seen any confirmation in my inbox that the message has been sent.

Nonetheless, I'm not a member of Admin and I have no idea what's going on?

If the site has been compromised in any way, then that's unfortunate.

However, considering the strong verbiage used in the site's general user guidelines, then it's not a far stretch of the imagination to presume that the error/warning messages could indeed be genuine.

I have a feeling that this is the end of my time on POF...well, 'twas an interesting 7 days, had fun while it lasted

...but now I gotta run

I'm experiencing a similar problem where POF is not allowing me to add or delete in the About me category. My selection for picking a fish to describe my personality was Clownfish which would suggest someone funny. I think I 'm funny in what I posted. I have received many many emails from females indicating they think I'm hilarious on what I posted. I did not swear or attempt to provide vulgar descriptions of anything. I merely added a similar slant that mirrors what some of the females have posted about where they specify they are looking for a man who has taken care of himself and is in shape. I merely added some humor to my version on that topic by indicating that most men do not find excessive body fat on a woman something that excites their senses. I went further to to describe the dilemma we face while in search of the right one whereby we are always stuck with the bill for the date and always looked upon to pay, when both are there to place each other under the microscope after electing to meet. My humorous take on how we are eating less at home while budgeting ourselves in paying for the NO connection first time dates surely isn't something that should be censored. Now when I triy to edit something else or even delete something or change even some of the entries like type of relationship I prefer, I noticed red script below the Describe Yourself entry area that provides suggestions on what to add and, I get a popup that has a yellow triangle with an exclamation in the center along along with "Are You Trying to be Funny"......Its not letting me change anything............maybe its because I offended a fat woman and they made a complaint to POF.........Since when does honesty combined with humor make for censorship when there is no pinpointing a certain individual and I am doing nothing more than providing the same as the females only in a satirical fashion.

One other interesting note. I have another profile on POF that I haven't added anything in months.........it has the same red script I mentioned earlier and will not let me change anything

^ Just as a FYI - you might want to delete that other profile ASAP or risk having both profiles deleted - only ONE profile per member is allowed.

As far as editing our profiles, I just went and edited mine and had no problems. And yes, the same message is written on my screen, so it wasn't meant as an insult to males, as someone suggested. I see it as a suggestion only - one that is obviously addressed to both men and women and one that can be followed or discarded IMO:)

Why is it that people so easily leap to wild conclusions such as the site got hacked.

It didnt get hacked and the sky isnt falling either.

What the op is referring to is a note admin has added to the edit page
consider it a tip

perhaps it was put there to help stop people from whining about "why isnt my profile working"

Ok Big Fish...c'mon!

Do ya REALLY want your pride and joy to look like a glorified page out of a newspaper?

I mean this is just begging for cookie-cutter profiles and ads. And yet, the proven method, is to STAND OUT from the crowd!

I appreciate your trying different things out. But do ya think having your members look like sardines in a can is appealing??

If there are existing E-Mail Addresses, Phone Numbers, Profanities, censored Terms, restricted Symbols, etc., try removing them first before making any other Changes.

Applicable to Forum Posts & Profile Edits too »E-Mail: Messaging Content Example

Your Profile cannot contain more than ...

  • A maximum of 5 consecutive "Greater Than Signs" »» > > > > >
  • A maximum of 12 consecutive "Question Marks" »» ????????????
  • A maximum of 18 consecutive "Periods" »» ..................
  • No further Restrictions on consecutive "Asterixes" »» N/A

... or face an Error Dialog insinuating you are trying to be funny.

I'm experiencing a similar problem where POF is not allowing me to add or delete in the About me category.

You must have a Minimum of 190 (Spaces are not counted) ASCII (Plain Text) Letters or Characters in the About Me Form Field of your Profile, and no more than 6,850 (including Spaces) for your entire Profile.

For some reason, I'm not getting that bug or screen - I can edit my profile just fine.

I'm using Internet Explorer for my browser and I haven't had to clear any cookies or temp. files (thank gawd).

I was getting the same message. I had used the asterisk symbol to draw a line ******* across my profile. As soon as I reduced the “repeated symbol or letter” down to eight characters there was no problem updating profile

I have noted the following will prevent you from saving/updating your Profile Settings if you have more than:
  • A maximum of 8 consecutive "Periods" »» ........

  • A maximum of 8 consecutive "Asterixes" »» ********

  • A maximum of 5 consecutive "Greater Than Signs" »» > > > > >

  • A maximum of 12 consecutive "Question Marks" »» ????????????

The "Smaller Than" Symbol will simply not render but still save the Settings.

If you try to enter more than 8 Eight Periods, then you are funny, but if you use 1,000 Commas ... then you are not.

Place a Space, Number or Character between any of the above consecutive Blocks of Symbols, and you can use as many as you like.

We got a lot of people not filling out their profiles correctly or basically putting in pointless stuff. Being direct and to the point gets people to fill in the profiles somewhat properly. Simply put if you don't put anything in the profile or use long repeating letters your success rate on this site will be super low.

if you don't put anything in the profile or use long repeating letters your success rate on this site will be super low.

I suggest a Filter then for a Max of 5 for the same consecutive Characters and Symbols (All of them on the Keyboard), as any Troll can still »» XOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOX his entire About Me Profile Form Field to the Tune of 1,000's of Characters.

The existing Filtration is ambiguous and will have Users coming back here Time and Time again because only "some" consecutive Symbols currently fail to update his Profile, and he'll be scratching his Head until Time Memorial which ones they might be, and what is the limit for each.

If the Filtration is not consistent across the Board, and no 'User Note' at the Top of the Page, little will be served by these "Funny Guy" Error Dialogs other than to piss People off.

The Users who are actually having Problems are those who have well-filled out Profiles, but are simply separating Sections of Text within using Astrix's, Lines & Dashes to achieve this Type of Formatting.

I think your filtration is valid..........
I would suggest though if you are going to create an error message
explain on the error message, what the person did wrong
writing "are you trying to be funny"
means nothing to someone that is typing in their 'about me' section
it is vague,I think that is the true concern here

    -great site though,very good

I was getting the same error and scrolled through this forum.

I read the above character limits and that was the problem.

I was only trying to add a coma after my Hello as in change it to Hello, .

So all the problem was is that I was over quanity limits of what is allowed on either characters, words etc.

I did an experiment and took out the word hello and hit the submit and that went ok.

This confirmed it has nothing to do with what is being said as I was not saying anything but adding a coma.

At any rate. I don't know about anyone else but that solved my problem.

I am getting the same message about "are you trying to be funny" - my profile was set up with all the wrong amounts of periods, greater than signs, etc. I had no problem updating until just a couple of days ago - now I cannot update no matter what I do. I tried taking out all the periods, astrisks, greater than signs etc. I STILL keep getting the same message - It's really annoying....
