Hi Markus, a site suggestion ... It would be great to have the additional religion profile choice of "Freethinker" on your list, there are plenty of us who fall somewhere between non-religious and atheist. Freethinker is a very growing movement for folks who do believe in a supreme intelligence, but do not believe in any one organized religion. I bet if you added Freethinker to your list, you would be shocked how many users declare that as their religious preference. Thanks
I like the original poster's idea, but I have a feeling it's likely to offend a lot of people if they have to choose between Free Thinker and something else!! How about just "deist" or "theist" or "spiritual"?
maybe the answer would be to scrap choose from the list and enable the member to write their religion in the box instead?
Not with the current System we have.
All it takes is a few spelling Mistakes and consequently No Matches may be found by some User, and then he'll be here in the Forums trying to tell us the 'Search' Functions don't work.
I also very much like that idea of being able to to type in your own Religious preference, not choosing from a pre-set list. I would actually prefer that instead of my original siggestion.
But as for Freethinkers, sorry, but "atheist" or "other" just don't cut it

by allowing a field that you can enter what ever you like, would render the search useless, as variations in how one spells something would not be found - hence your profile would be at risk of being missed in searches.
Well, I think we've been told that "other" will have to cut it, for people of various categories -- yours and mine included.
But I certainly didn't mean to suggest that Free Thinker should be the same as atheist -- merely that people being forced NOT to choose Free Thinker because there's another, more precise term (say, Baptist, or "other" for me!) might offend some. You know, like "damn, I'm a Catholic so I have to pick that, but does that mean I'm NOT a Baptist? Well, yes, and I'm not, so fine. But wait, does that mean I'm not a Free Thinker too?!!"
(okay, maybe that was a bad example...) ;)
K, but seriously, Admin, "atheist" is a legitimate option. Please add it. If you've been following the zeitgeist at all recently, you'll know that many now are finally feeling free to to define themselves as such, and will also search for it.
Would it be possible to make the Religion search option a multi-select list such as 'Smarts' is for example, instead of a drop down list? Thanks for a great site & all the best in 2009!
There should definitely be one for atheist/agnostic. Freethinker would fall in there or other. Basically, if you doubt, you're an atheist. You'd think Non-Religious would be atheist and agnostics. But where i live anyway, practically neveryone that has nonreligious selected turns out to in fact be religious.
Thing is, you see, atheism is NOT a religion. How can it be if an atheist has no belief whatsoever in any type of deity? Agnostic and Freethinker both mean, in general terms, that a deity has to be proven to exist.
Therefore none of the above are a religion at all. Maybe just stick with Non Religious or choose "Other" and elaborate such in your profile.
