Canada Vs. USA
Posted:

Why do you think there are less deaths per capita in Canada from firearms?
Personally, I think it's the whole 'fear' factor mingled in with how the governmet treats the people.
I hear people rationalizing the gun issue saying they need a gun in their area/home to be 'safe'. But if I had to have a gun to feel safe, I'd be moving pretty fast.
I also find the whole 'it's in our constitution to bear arms' a little much. 'Arms' covers a broad range of weaponry.

Pat Robertson...will the man EVER learn?
Posted:

Now, America isn't a perfect country, but we have the best thing in the world, and thats freedom. Some would say thats a bad thing but for us, it's the only way of life, and we are willing to die for it(well, most of us).
While this is a topic about religion and not politics, I'm tempted to reply with my political viewpoint. From the outside looking in, at this moment in time, America doesn't appear to be very 'free'. While you may believe 'we' (as in your fellow countrymen) are willing to 'die' for feedom, I have to invoke the BS rule on that one. Most of the americans who are dying for democracy and freedom right now are not willing.
About Pat.....He tends to speak his mind a bit too much at times.....For the most part, what he was trying to get across is that according to the bible, Israel is God's people, always has been. In the bible, Israel has had to fight for it's God given land. Some would disagree with God in what he thinks a people should occupy. Who are we to argue with the creator of everything? We dont. If your not a believer, it would be hard for you to understand and Pat doesn't take this into consideration at times, and he comes off as being a wackjob to the majority.
Being a believer has nothing to do with it. I know many who 'believe' and think Robertson is a dangerously fundamental lunatic. He is not getting anything across except his own twisted, obscured version of the bible. Nothing more.

False Prophecies in the Bible

How can anyone say the Bible is infallible and keep a straight face?
Because the bible was interpreted by man. Nobody knows if it's 'real' or not and quite a huge chunk of the world's population doesn't believe in it.

Finally, the Conservatives are in the lead :applause:
Posted:
1/6/2006 7:51:05 PM
I haven't read all the posts, I stopped at the bottom of page 2 before I replied with the following rant.
Brian Mulroney was the last conservative to 'really' hold office (can't really count Campbell, she wasn't there long now, was she?). What good did Mulroney do for us? Oh yes, he brought us 'free trade'. The Big Shaft for Canada.
Regarding anybody who thinks Conservatives will bring morality to politics needs to step into reality and familiarize themselves with the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Steven Harper is against so many things (in my humble opinion) that Canada stands for. We've turned a new millenium and I really don't like how I visualize a conservatively run Canada.
I don't believe religious influences should have anything to do with political leanings.
Regarding the USA; I'm glad Canada is different. We (as a country) never wanted the same beliefs as the US.
We had a surplus in our budget WITHOUT the beef and the softwood (which is grossly over tarrif and the US should be held to their end of the agreements).
I honestly think Harper would sell us down the road to the highest US corporate political bidder.
As much as it pains me to say it, even Layton has Canada's interests more in focus than Harper and his party and their supporters and followers do.
But, strategically, the Liberals will win. Most of the people I know will vote Liberal because it's the only choice we have right now as a country.
Reading the last few posts here...we aren't forcing our idea of democracy onto other countries. Can you imagine the next generation of Iraqi people? They're living right now without anything. No water, food is scarce, everything is bombed, no infrastructure, no hospitals or schools, panic and death everywhere. Most of the common Iraqi people are not of the belief that the US led invasion of democracy is a good thing. Yes Saddam is gone, but he shouldn't have been put there in the first place - and who aided that? They're going to suffer for a long time (sadly). And they won't be blaming Canada.
Canada is in no fear of any invasions as long as we continue to be seperated from the US and remain our own identity and continue to try and keep the peace.

What is a witch?
Posted:
1/6/2006 7:24:22 PM
Witches/Wicca/whatever you want to categorize are not specifically pagans, but pagans CAN be witches or have wiccan beliefs. This is also part of the misconceptions arising from people who don't know a lot about either of those belief systems. Pagans are not automatically witches.
And to the person who feels that witches don't believe in God back on page one should really do a little bit of research instead of the mindfeed organized religion (mostly christianity) pounds into the brains of it's own 'cult' members. Quite a few wiccans, witches and pagans see God in everything, calling themselves pantheists.

Well, I doubt the Liberals are going to lost the election. We'll possibly be with another minority government and with Stephen Harper and Jack Layton back at it - we're the losers in the end.
The problem is that no matter what the platform, the choice in leaders is not that great.
I think none of them really represent the ideals of what their party is supposed to be.
I won't be able to vote the way I'd like to this election, because I have to look at the bigger picture of which is the lesser evil and which is best for our country as a whole.
I wish I could be selfish and think about MY needs, but not when it's going to screw us up as a nation or lead us to nothing but bullshit in the House of Commons.
Pretty sad, actually.

Sorry, wasn't thinking. Doesn't matter, I'd think veterans wouldn't want another generation to experience the things they did. Makes perfect sense.
Wow, I can see why the term 'ugly american' came into play.

I now a LOT of veterans who oppose the war in Iraq (which isn't exactly bringing freedom to any Iraqi's) and who think Bush and his cronies are totally incompetent.
I don't have to visit your military hospital, I can visit my cousin any time I like in his...or visit the graves of my cousins and uncles who died in Vietnam.
Somebody said something a few pages back about money lost by the americans in WWII, but how much money did the Bush family make during that war?

Are you saying nothing in the DaVinci Code is true or real? That's a lot of disputing.

Why should people be careful about what crosses their minds? If god is all loving, I just don't get it. I don't damn my children for questioning my motives!
Some people believe that 'bright light' is being born again (as in reincarnation).

There are many different beliefs of 'afterlife'. I find some of them fascinating.
Some people believe in reincarnation, and some people believe that believing you lived in another place and time is just genetic memories from your ancestors.

It wasn't the United States alone, it was the allies; most of who were in that war for three years before the US decided to join after Pearl Harbor.

Why is it so hard for people to understand that you can be very against this war and support the people sent over there to fight it?
Of course, Bush doesn't appreciate the sacrifices any military makes because he went AWOL and was a privileged boy who didn't have to.
What stymies me is that people who are against the war also figure into the equation the lives lost and the cost of war in casualties.
***Thank God for George W. Bush Great Leader Of USA***
Right. Enjoy those raises now, because who do you think is going to have to pay the 'brazillions' of dollars this war is costing the United States?

I also believe organized religion is a big scam. The bible was interpreted by man, and 100 people can get 100 different opinions from the same verse, or use it to twist whatever it is they want to get across as accepted in the eyes of 'God'.
I'm not one who believes christians rule the roost.
I don't belive in hell, because I don't believe in heaven.

Just because I oppose the war in Iraq and think Bush is incompetent?
I think a lot of my OWN politicians in Canada are incompetent.
Can you actually give me an intelligent reply or engage in mature conversation instead of using the very tired, and very old 'anti-american' retort?
You don't know anything about me, my friends or my family to make such an assumption.

I agree that there's a bit of head shaking going on up here in Canada.
For anybody to get into the United States, it is through US Customs. To come into Canada, it's Canadian customs.
I love the border idea. Free Trade doesn't really to apply to us up here in Canada. We got taken, but not as badly as Mexico did.

I haven't read very many replies, but I am very against the war in Iraq.
Iraq didn't do anything to the United States. I think anybody who viewed the PNAC website before the last election should have experienced their hair standing on end at their 'mission statement'. I would be ashamed if my country caused the deaths of all the 'allies' and Iraqi's while using September 11th as a justification for it. The USA's foreign policy is something to be ashamed of as well.
I think George Bush is the real terrorist. I know my opinion will probably not be popular, but that's okay. I can handle it.

Martin & Liberals are goin' down! Hunnnnh!
Posted:

I think Stephen Harper is an idiot. I love the idea of what Canada is supposed to be. And I don't think Harper is on the same page.
I'd like to vote for the Green Party because I think it's important for them to have representation in the House of Commons, but I will definitely vote Liberal this time.
Layton's not really somebody I'd like to run the country, but as far as an opposing view goes, he's still better than Harper.
I don't like Harper's stand on almost everything and I think he would cause more damage to the country than good.
I live in Ralph Klein's Alberta and being a single parent and a woman, I have to say that I'm really not experiencing any of his boasting about the richest province in Canada shite.
I'd love to see the days of politicians we can be proud of. I am filled with pride that we're nothing like the US.
The amount of money totally wasted on the non-confidence issue has been pathetic. All the more important things they could have put that energy into was wasted. The Senate was working overtime to pass important bills because our leaders were acting like morons, wasting our tax paying dollars.
Martin hasn't done us too badly, and I believe he's a better human being and representative of Canadians than Stephen Harper is.
I will admit that I'm a bleeding heart liberal, and I like myself that way.
For me, the whole non-confidence thing means nothing compared to real issues and situations that Canadians need to worry about.
Anybody checking Rick Mercer's blog? Pretty funny stuff.
