The Hardon Collider cannot recreate the black hole here on earth. It does not have the ingredients of space.
Please tell us why hardon colliders can't make black holes. Maybe if you try from the other side.... I think there's a forum dedicated to people looking to collide hardons and see black holes here somewhere.

I don't see why everyone is so worried about CERN. I have a personal HC (with a smaller circumference) on my property and I use it to light my cigs when I can't find my lighter. I'm sure at least that the LHC at CERN was designed by brilliant scientists who would never use flimsy magnets that would break, leave their controller computers accessible to hackers, or power equipment that would melt and cause the entire project to shut down almost instantly after they got it working.
"'If you don't do enough tests, you get something like the Hubble,' said Dan Green of Fermilab, who also works on the LHC. " Like, totally. See, the Hubble was designed by the most brilliant minds, after years of science, and it only took like a billion dollars and a few shuttle flights to fix. I'm sure they spend their time vetting the science and not making rap music videos, unlike you yokels. These are the people *I* trust to tell me the black holes they want to make that have never been seen before are totally safe.

Motor Sports arn't a sport and are bed for nature.

Your average indy driver has to have split second reflexes and perfect concentration and judgment for hours at a time during a race. An indy driver will lose more water sweating during that race than a hockey goalie playing 3 straight games in a row, and will subject himself to g-forces comparable to launching into space.
Now; you may not consider that a sport, but it's a pretty hard sell to think motorsports athletes are 'cheating' because they use a motor. Are you 'cheating' when you use a plastic kayak and paddle? Shouldn't you carve out a tree and longboat your way around the water using your hands or a branch if you want to keep from destroying nature with your plastic consumption?
Also, statements like "We should work with nature ,not destroy it,and we would all be healthier in the end." are pretty ridiculous on their own merits. I should invent a sport called 'chainsaw assisted squirrel racing' and see if I can sell it to the X games.

Windows Vista - Why Not to Buy a New Laptop
Posted:

I read your post 3 times and I can't actually make out your point.
Aside from asking me if I'm really in tech (I am) you seem to be making completely random and unconnected statements. I don't get it, should I build a 200 node 6 subnet network and then also buy myself a vista laptop and plug it into a linksys router to make myself happier? Does this somehow produce delicious cookies to eat?!? I'm intrigued; what's the problem? Cheers to you as well.

Windows Vista - Why Not to Buy a New Laptop
Posted:
8/5/2008 3:38:46 AM
"However, people say Windows Vista is bad news. "
People are stupid.
I'm a computer repairman. I've been using Vista since milestone betas hit the internet scene. I used the betas and the release candidates. I used the RTM (finished) product when it became available and now I'm using service pack 1. I use linux, bsd and from time to time I use OSX. I am OS agnostic, since these are not lifestyle choices or churches of thought, they're just tools. That said, Vista is a better tool than XP.
Vista's biggest hiccups are gone. There was a real negativity regarding the cut features, early performance problems and bugs in pre-release builds from lots of tech bloggers and pundits; sadly that impression stayed while Vista evolved. It's really common to have problems like this when an OS is new.
I also hear a lot of ****ing and moaning about "the high cost of vista" and this also seems pretty retarded. I used the wayback machine once to check newegg.com for 2001, the year XP was released, and I found that to buy a computer with double the minimum specs it cost 25-30% more to upgrade your computer for XP in 2001 than it did to get double the min specs for Vista in Jan 2007; it's only gotten cheaper since and you get a whole lot more machine now. Vista is a must for 64 bit, don't even bother trying to run the red-headed stepchild of an OS that XP64 is.
Does anyone remember installing XP and accidentally leaving it connected to the internet? Remember how it used to give you the 2 minute shutdown timer the first time you logged on because your box was already infected and virused? It seems people who love XP have some pretty selective memory, it used to be a real nightmare. Vista is much nicer already, and xp has a 6 year head start.
MS is running a new ad campaign Folgers style, and it's pretty funny seeing everyone trash vista until they learn this new super secret OS they're shown actually IS vista.... since they pretty much love it. Vids are up at mojaveexperiment.com I think.
SO
All that said, you think I'm full of shit and you still want to run antiquated software because people say new software "just sucks" then I can still help:
"Does anyone know when Windows will be coming out with a new platform?"
2010, codenamed 'Windows 7', this was supposed to be a new architecture (again) built on MinWin a super slim version of the kernel and core services. Now though MS has stated this will be an evolution of the current Vista kernel and core services. So it will remain compatible with current and most legacy software. IF Win7 is compartmentalized in the same way as server 2008 is now, Win7 should be a very agile and expandable OS.
"Are there ways to get around Vista?"
You can buy a Dell with ubuntu linux preinstalled on it.
You can buy an Acer AspireOne for like $380 and it's a crazy little sub-notebook.
You can always decline the Vista EULA on first boot, format the drive, install linux/XP and write your notebook manufacturer for a rebate on the cost of the Vista OS.
"If you were going to buy a new laptop, what type would you buy?"
Asus for high end. HP for middle of the road. Acer on the cheap.
I'd get one with Vista Business or Vista Ultimate preinstalled because both of those editions of Vista come with a special license when preinstalled on your OEM laptop: You can use XP Pro instead. So when you get your laptop, call up your OEM, yell and **** and moan and pay the $20 for XP install discs to be mailed to you and have them give you an XP downgrade key, then you can choose when you upgrade back to vista without paying again.

Roger's Mobile Monopoly...
Posted:

lmao
$56/month for voice only service and a crappy motorola.... or, $200 for the handset and $14/month more for the most amazing mobile experience with rogers.
Really? People balk at this deal but still buy their ipods and phones separately for much more than $200 combined, I don't see the point. Telus voice plans are much more than my rogers plan, and theres no data plan that comes even close to the 6gb/$30 addon I have, $40 for voice and $30 for data and I'm not much more than your plan.
But I get so, so much more with my iphone. I'll be driving from kamloops to vancouver today and back, and the entire time I'll be emailing and browsing websites for information I need, playing podcasts, and staying totally connected.
It's worth the extra $1/day over a competitors plan for my money.

Roger's Mobile Monopoly...
Posted:

yep
I paid just over $500 to get my 1st gen iphone last year.
Loved it. Getting one now for $200 with a faster speed and A-GPS (so no turn by turn, but still, its nice) and visual voicemail is a fantastic deal. My plan is Canada-wide MY5 with most options, plus data and it'll be around $70/month. Most Blackberry plans start around here and go up I've heard.
Now, the new 2.0 firmware for the new 3g iphones is available, and rogers has 6gb of data for $30/month. It's amazing.
Sure it sounds like technolust, but it honestly is the most incredibly useful thing now.
When I'm out and I hear a song I don't know but I like it; I use shazam, and 15 seconds later I have the complete track/album/artist info and links to the music video on youtube which streams right to me.
When I'm out and around, I can email, facebook chat, sms, gtalk chat, and twitter almost as fast as I type at home. The keyboard is *that* fast.
If I load up the phone with over 8gb of music, audiobooks, tv shows, movies, and podcasts and I want to listen to something new.... last.fm streams music I'll probably like straight to me.
Movie times for whatever the nearest theater is... along with trailers I can watch with one tap.
Web pages load perfectly, and they look amazing. The screen is very easy to read. Video is gorgeous.
So since the beginning of this month I've been trying to use up all 6gb of data, installing free apps, streaming youtube for people everywhere I go... streaming music instead of syncing my music to it.... I'm at like 130mb used; the $30 is pure peace of mind, you can't use this much on a phone. Get it anyways since it's not much more than the 400mb regular plan and goes away soon.
Downsides:
The new firmware is buggy and some apps crash intermittently (when an app crashes, it crashes over and over until you leave it alone a while, really weird), which doesn't sound that bad, but murphy's law dictates this happens when you really *NEED* this song shazammed, or facebook to load a photo gallery to flip through. The basic apps never, EVER crash, so phone, internet, email, sms, etc are always rock solid.
The 3G versions you get at rogers seem to crash a little more often than the 1st gens.
Firmware updates should solve this soon though.
The battery life on 3g phones is bad with heavy use. Plan on getting a car charger, mine lasts for days, but lots of people complain that with the new high speed 3g kicked in, they don't make it through a whole day. A few I've seen seem to do this... but I think it's the 3g speed usage that kills them, turn it off and use EDGE and you should last all day easy.
ITunes. God I hated iTunes for forever, I am slowly coming around to it (after over a year) because of podcasting, but I still wish I could use anything else with it.
Do it. You know you want one.

Any thoughts on this?

Okay, I'm down with the flu, sorry for not checking in over the last day.
My gosh you people, can no one offer me a simple answer?
For those wondering:
It's the GF's cat.
The super soaker has been veto'd by the GF. (I pushed for this for like a week)
The cat and GF can not be swapped up for better options.
There's no way to install a floor to ceiling post here, and if I DID build one, the cat would have a launchpad to every square foot in the place including the bed.
Yes I tried rubbing catnip on everything, doesn't help.
No you can't come over and help, I'm living in friggin Ontario right now.
We're not taking the cat to the SPCA or putting it down, it is a nice cat for the most part.
Now, to the people who suggested cayenne pepper...
Thank you, will try later.
BUT
I'd much rather have a nice smelling place (and cat!) and use febreeze. One of you said it will make the cat blind, and I think you're making shit up. First off, you'd have to hold the cat's eyes open and spray directly into them, which would never happen. Secondly, if just having febreeze on them would blind the cat... I doubt febreeze would have been around for like 8 years now without a major class action lawsuit. Can you back this up with ANY report of this ever actually happening?
Cmon all you parents out there, I want one of you to tell me how your toddler guzzled febreeze once and either; Had to rush to poison control, or; Was fine and has since learned to play Mozart at age 7.

We have soft paws. Putting them on is delicate work. Delicate work is not easily done on this cat's claws (see my solution #2 in OP).
The apt is small and lacks doors except for the closet and bathroom.
Let's say for a second that I do not want to do inhumane things like lock the cat in a closet or small bathroom, or have it declawed (no matter how much it tests me) and I think that if petsafe, spraying the cat with febreeze is more acceptable than other options.
Snopes looked into rumours about febreeze killing pets and debunked it:
http://www.snopes.com/critters/crusader/febreze.asp
ASPCA says febreeze is fine used as directed in homes with cats and dogs.
Of course I want to hit the cat with febreeze like the fist of an angry norse god. Anyone got experience with such a situation?
let's clear up other options: cat's been spayed already, cat's not sick or in pain, cat's nearly 2 years old so this is adult behaviour, we don't tease or harass it, it's not hungry or looking for a clean box.
EDIT: I DID sneak attack the cat for massive damage and it turned around and glared. I'm very sneaky.
DOUBLE EDIT: Name's not garfield, and I'm not kidding.

No room for a dog.
Yes the cat has a scratching post, and toy mice, crinkle bag, ball on a spring with base, all kinds of crap designed to snap my neck when I first wake up. We tried coating the carpet of the post and the carpet base of the ball on spring with catnip, putting catnip in the crinkle bag, and they'll hold her attention for an hour or so.
The catnip also makes her tear around the house at top speed.
The cat's obsessed with getting into places it shouldn't, like the fridge, or knocking my monitor off the desk by climbing behind it.
Here's normal cat behavior on film:

So I've got this cat, great cat, love the cat.
Hate the fact that the cat claws on $800 swivel chair and other less expensive furniture.
Solution 1# Yell at cat. -Unfortunately the cat has quickly discovered my bluff and no longer respects my bloodthirsty scream as worth noticing, which is unfortunate those times I'm yelling at the cat to move and avoid falling objects.
Solution 2# Cut cat's claws. -This temporary measure just gives the cat time to brood, plot, and master furniture-clawing technique without leaving visible damage or sounds of cloth tearing. Before I learned to wrap the cat in a blanket, this also resulted in nasty scratches.
Solution 3# Water bottle spray. -This sure did work awesome for a while. The cat would tear off like it had seen a ghost, and I would chuckle with the pompous knowledge of my water bottle superiority.
Unfortunately, today, the cat faced the water bottle straight on and gave me a glare the likes of which I'd never seen before. It's an arms race now and the cat is in to win.
So I'm looking for advice. I came up with the idea of ditching water in the spray bottle I hit the cat with, and using febreeze instead. The cat will smell nice and learn to hate being around fabric furnitures. This is perfect if febreeze is petsafe.
I'm 100% serious,I'll go find the picture of the cat trying to eat a pepsi can box, to show you how crazy it is.

On a serious note, try a roll of paper towels
If you toss 2 rolls in the wash they'll break up and soak up water and ink, when the spin cycle ends most of the water bleeds out and you're left with pulp, throw that in the dryer and it'll harden like paper mache that you can just break into pieces and pull out. Don't cheap out with dollar brand, get bounty or something equally tough.
PS - CARL LINGUS69, I'm not accepting offers, but if I were, the only POSSIBLE way I could get less than I do with an attitude like mine, is to join an internet dating site using a nickname that ends in '69'.

My son washed a load of clothes yesterday and he had a ball point pen in his pocket. The ink is now all through the inside of my washer and dryer and I dont know what to use to get it out.
Does anyone know what will remove the ink from the inside of the washer and dryer???????
any other tips that you know for cleaning etc???
Try kittens, about 5 should do the trick. Go for the fluffy ones.
Maybe bleach.
Yeah, enough kittens and bleach are sure to do the trick, your dryer will look like new.

WHY WOMEN SETTLE FOR THE ROTTEN APPLES
Posted:

Here's where I explain the difference between someone who values *appearing* deep and artsy, and someone who is deep and/or artistic.
John Locke (per your citations) as an example fits into the latter category. He had 8 major works published, was an accomplished physician, and influenced many modern ideas about personal freedoms in relation to governing bodies.
You, wrote "Soul Searching over a cup of tea" on your online profile for a dating site, along with other fanciful interests that no one else anywhere at all shares with you. A site where you fail to fully comprehend someone's post and reply with grade school sarcasm and logic in an attempt to prove moral superiority. Therefore you are a somewhat strong example of the former type of person, especially if based on the ratio of fluff/substance you've written about yourself. At least you listen to decent music.

Girls are like old halloween candy on sale, the best ones are on the top shelf. The boy don't want to reach for the good ones because they are afraid of falling and don't want to get hurt (They’re fat from candy). Instead, they just get the rotten old halloween candy from the ground that aren't so good but easy. So, the old halloween candy at the top think something is wrong with them, when in reality they are amazing. They just have to wait for the right boy to come along, the one who's brave enough to climb all the way to the top because they value quality.
Cheers!

Amazing.
Obviously this was the handiwork of Cris Angel (the mindfreak!) or David Blaine.
I'm sure the next special will feature amazing dating-site disappearing tricks, and you're probably going to receive a waiver soon so you can appear on TV and give quotes like "I REALLY though he was a datable guy!! How'd he do that?!"
In fact, I bet the entire show features dating/disappearing tricks:
- disappearing when the dinner bill arrives
- disappearing contraceptives
- disappearing whenever the ex is in town
Maybe you should count yourself lucky.

I've said, "Come a little closer so I can get a better look."
I then put my arms around her, grabbed her but with both hands, and spun her onto the bed, underneath me and gave her a big kiss.
This resulted in a smile, smudged make-up, messed hair, and a late departure followed with mild chastising.
After a couple similar occurrences, the response only had to be "Come a little closer..."
You went 17 MONTHS back in the forum, just so you could post this drivel?

I have to admit this is one thing I take part in a lot - mainly at work. I find it really helpful to vent about a colleague with another colleague. In fact, most of us gossip at my work place and I am not sure it is all bad.
single?
There are some topics I won't gossip about or am just not interested in and if someone tells me something in confidence about themselves or someone I like, I tend to keep it secret most of the time.
wow, most? lucky friends.
If I don't manage to keep it a secret, I have kept it a secret for a long time.
telling after a while is just as good as not telling
I wondering how do most of you feel about gossip. Do you take part in it?
yeah, I love wasting time
I have noticed that men are just as bad as women when it comes to gossip. Any thoughts on this?

Women are like 7th grade english class similes, the best ones are still pretty crappy. The students don't want to write anything interesting, instead, they write rehashed crap they already heard in a book or on the internet that aren't so good, but are easy. So the good similes think something is wrong with them, and they are right. Tjhe reality is they're too friggin hard to get. They just have to wait for some jerk to come along and write them down so he can use to them (and mediocre acoustic guitar skills) to nail 16 year olds between their shifts as stockboy and smoking up 11 hours a day. Guys who can't get laid value appearing deep and artsy.

Evil Curses

Does anyone else have any similar stories or thoughts on the continuing battle of good vs evil?
I have a question. How does one go about removing or reversing such a curse TBF?
I know all the basic curse repellents (Money, riding motorbikes, intoxicants, having a band, in a last ditch survival effort even the "L" word) but I need more advanced techniques.
For instance, how did K-Fed reverse the powerful vaginal curse of a woman as almighty as brittney spears so utterly completely? He went from Po-po-zao; to flaunting a pirate costume in court and beating her handily.

Okay, I come here in fits and spurts, but lately, I noticed that the "Viewed Me" page has repeat offenders.
Does this register every time you log in and view someones page? Once per day? I have to know.
I'm thinking I should write up a little script that views profiles a good 30 or 40 times, so when they click "Viewed me" ITS ALL ME, EVERY ONE OF THEM IS ME, I'M WATCHING YOU, READING YOUR PROFILE OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND NOT SENDING YOU MESSAGES.
So can anyone confirm the multiple entries and fill me in on how they work?

"Hey, I'm drunk too! I feel like we already know each other"
"When you're done leading him on for free drinks, I'll be over there"
"OKAY, who here likes sex?"
"You love kids? That's awesome, me too, I see mine twice a month. Usually."
"*quick, pretend you're my sister*"

"My mom says..." in front of everything was *great* fun.
So was acting like a 3rd grader after a "stranger safety" discussion. "That's a touch in my swimsuit area and you're not my parents" would really help the mood.
When she introduces you to her friends ask each of them in turn if they're the girl from the skinny dipping story you heard. Demand an answer if they laugh it off as a joke. Appear disappointed at all the 'No's.
"What for?!" said at the right moment with the proper tone of voice is one of my faves.

Hey Tasha,
http://forums.plentyoffish.com/AddPost.aspx?ForumID=78&party=1
Use that link to post a party thread where people can sign up.
Might also relax that 18-24 restriction until the event so people can PM you regarding it (instead of posting these things in public threads.

It seems like someone's decided to put the Brit wannabe Cali girl in her place properly. About freaking time. Kudos to Alanis, this had me gasping with laughter:

Racism
Posted:

I don't know whats more worrisome, someone defacing private property or you wanting to" hurt" that person?
Pshhh, don't you know that random acts of violence are the only effective means of combating racism?
OP if you think I'm sexist, so be it. I refuse to apologize for considering likely sources (employee frustration) and pointing out absurdities with the situation (and prostituting would be pretty absurd considering how most greasy spoon waitresses look). Of course, I also refuse to apologize on behalf of other white people, lots of them are ignorant but if I go around apologizing on behalf of people I don't know, it only belittles me. Of course, you could simply not apologize, but just mention how much it upsets you (see my first post here) but then you're just being ineffectual.
Bottom line is that they're business owners, if this restaurant was in Japan, the writing would still be there, anti-Chinese; if it was in Korea, it would be anti-Japanese... and so on. At the end of the day, they'll be sweating the bottom line and not the bathroom graffiti, if it costs them a paint job every two weeks and the business is fine, I'm sure they'd be happier about that than a failing business with clean walls.
Wanna stop racism? Ignore it when you can't do anything about it, but the next time you're out and someone mentions something racist, stand up and walk out. Works fantastic.

The real question is...
Why does the waitress know the details of the graffiti in the men's room stalls? Does she double as a janitor? Is she serving up 'Breakfast specials for the regulars' on break? Maybe she's the culprit, and venting work frustration.
Pointing out racism, then pointing out explicitly how un-racist you are, is in itself pretty arrogant. Are you expecting the business owner to fall to his knees proclaiming you a hero for not calling him names all over his bathroom walls? How do you envision that conversation going exactly?

Due to all the chatting, and general rule breaking trouble makers in the forums i've decided to start charging people for the privilage of using the forums.
Effective next week if you want to post in the forums there will be a ONE MILLLLLLION DOLLAR monthly charge and you can post all you want.
Breaking general rule E in epic PoF thread.

Trans Gender washrooms?
Posted:
3/28/2007 2:42:08 AM
100% behind this idea. Thing is though, you can't label them transgender washrooms. It'll have to have a perfectly normal 'guy' sign on the outside, but painted pink and women's accomdations on the inside. Vice versa as well, women's sign, urinals inside. You step inside and it's all "Hey surprise, it's not what it looked like!!!"
If anyone gets lippy we can just give em a bunch of attitude, "look, you don't know how hard it is to retrofit bathrooms that were built incorrectly. It's painful enough that these bathrooms were built the wrong way around without you drawing attention. We're doing the best we can, who are you to judge our stalls?"

A good guess would be to see if your in or out.How else is he going to know, unless he gives it a shot?Everything has to start somewhere.
Agreed. Same principle as making like you're going to open a door for your date, then grabassing her instead. Or telling her you'd be happy to watch her purse while she goes to the ladies room, and rooting around in there to see if she has contraceptives, cash money, or mace. How else are you possibly going to find out if "she's in" ?

Look at all the grumps with sand in their crotches.
I can think of a million things worse than a little white lie. Moral crusading over insignifigant matters for the sake of causing arguments to satisfy your own insecurities is only one of them.
