Have any of the guys on this site had much luck with dating?

"Incidentally, i am aware of someone who did create a profile of a male model on this site and the number of emails he got from interested women was phenomenal. Which just goes to show that it is definitely looks and not personality or character which many women go for."

It will always be the case that both men and women will be drawn to the most physically attractive members of the opposite sex. There's nothing wrong with that, it's nature's way. I'm not the most attractive bloke on the block, but I definately go for looks first when viewing profiles. However, as I'm looking for someone who I can go biking and skiing with, if her only interests are shopping and clubbing, I'll keep looking no matter how gorgeous they are. I guess I'm just shallow.

Should British citizens be allowed to own non-lethal self defense weapons?
Posted: 6/10/2009 7:04:07 AM
"My point about keys is its legal to carry them, whereas carrying a knife will see you in court for possessing an offensive weapon. If you had keys in your hand and someone tried to attack you and you hurt them with the keys then yes you can get charged with assault but you could plead self-defense"

You could plead self defense, but if you had keys and the person attacking you had nothing, your keys become an offensive weapon. I was told this by a cop once. It would be interesting to find out where you would stand in the eyes of the law in that scenario, does anyone know?

Smoking. Nothing worse than kissing someone who tastes like an ashtray, has yellow fingers and smells like old pub curtains (before the smoking ban came into play...)

If I'm not mistaken, the law says that anything you use to assault another person, whether or not in self-defense, is classed as a 'weapon', that includes kitchen knives, keys, aerosol sprays, even a rolled up newspaper - if it injures the person it's used against, it's a weapon. So next time you try to fend off a mugger with your copy of the Sun, try not kill him, as you may end up on a charge my son.

Spelling, or lack thereof these days
Posted: 5/19/2009 10:37:41 AM
"I can understand more when people are texting and pushed for time but on a forum"

"comma after time"

Incorrect:

"Remember that a comma comes before the conjunction (and, but, or, so, yet, for) only where a full stop is equally appropriate. So if you are not sure whether to include a comma or not before a coordinating conjunction, try putting a full stop there. If that creates a fragment, then you do not need any punctuation. If the full stop makes sense, then you need the comma (or the full stop)."

£775 - for a bike light
Posted: 5/7/2009 3:55:46 PM
Yes, but the Veyron is ultimately WAY better in terms of performance than the £8K car. That's my point. Incidentally, I read that the Veyron is actually worth about £1.2 million, but they decided on £800,000 because that's what they thought people would be willing to pay!

Depends on what kind of biking you do. My friends and I do night mountain bike riding sessions up here in Snowdonia. We all use very powerful LED or Halolgen lights because regular 'safety' type lights simply aren't bright enough. Also, these lights last for 4 or 5 hours and use very lightweight rechargeable batteries. There's alot of technology that goes into them and I can tell you, as I sell them, the retailer doesn't make alot out of them. It's kind of like comparing a high perfomance car to a Ford Fiesta - you get what you pay for.

Why is the Death Penalty Punishment?
Posted: 5/7/2009 7:27:18 AM
Good point made above: if you ended someone elses life in genuine self defense, knowing that their aim was to kill you, does that make you a 'killer'?

By this I mean, if someone has the intention to take the life of another person, should they not themselves expect to have their own life ended?

In this respect, is not the death penalty a just punishment?

Not sure if that makes sense to anyone else!

Edit: Google 'Stanley Tookie Williams' for another contraversial debate!

Can't say I've noticed any extra attention at the gym when I go (usually because I'm the only one there!), but I know what you're talking about OP. I get a buzz while doing aerobic stuff like cross trainer or rowing machine and start to 'visualize' - with the cross trainer it's usually skiing through powder and with rowing it's a race back in my high-school days. It's probably a good thing I'm the only one there, I probably look a bit weird excersising with my eyes closed! It is addictive though, I feel uncomfortable if I don't do the gym or some form of exercise every day. I can totally relate to what JCL1 is saying about withdrawal.

Why is the Death Penalty Punishment?

Msg 21:

In your opinion it was murder, not according to the British legal system. My comments about the death penalty were based on my assumption that only convicted murderers were given the death penalty, and even then, ususally for the most severe cases (as someone else stated, '1st degree murder').

Why is the Death Penalty Punishment?
Posted: 5/5/2009 7:00:23 AM
If you're going to commit murder, it shows you have no regard for human life anyway. The person who has been murdered has just as much a right to life as the murderer, so why shouldn't the murderer expect to forfeit his/her own if he/she carries out such a crime, especially if the victim involved is a child. If I were a parent who's child had been murdered by someone who was subsequently convicted of that crime, as far as I'm concerned, there would be no force on earth that could prevent me from taking revenge, at whatever cost, death penalty or not. If that makes me a bad person then so be it...

There is a difference between the above, ie 'murder' and the death penalty. Murder is the taking of a life without the consent of society. The death penalty, where it is in use, is usually with the consent (of the majority) of society, as a just punishment for the crime commited.

Wether the death penalty is punishment or not? Yes, I think it is. We all have a fear of dying, it's a natural part of life. And if the murderer has to wait 20 years for it, so much the better, as the punishment is even greater - knowing that you are going to lose your life as a result of taking someone elses must be a terrifying ordeal; losing your 'right to life' is the ultimate punishment for denying that same right to someone else.

Pregnant British woman faces death by firing squad for smuggling drugs.
Posted: 5/4/2009 5:56:43 AM
Is it possible that she became pregnant to help her own situation, ie, maybe less likely that she would be shot if found guilty? If she is guilty of smuggling heroin in a country that offers the death penalty as punishment, maybe she's also desparate enough to try anything to avoid that punishment. Pure speculation, I know, but heroin addicts (don't know if she is or isn't) do some pretty desparate things to get their fix.

Don't know if anyone noticed, but there was one man on the program the other night who had tried chemical castration on himself, but found that he still could not control his urges. Along with therepy, he volunteered to have himself physically castrated. I think he was the guy who was on a waiting list for accomodation outside of the 'hospital'.

Any fatalists here
Posted: 4/12/2009 5:34:31 AM
No, I don't believe anything is pre-determined for us, nor do I believe we have a reason to be here. We make our choices in life which have consequences, but they in turn mean nothing. Things happen by coincidence (or if you like, 'luck' or 'bad luck'), but ultimately we're just another living thing trying to self-perpetuate in competition with every other living thing and the environment we live in. As far as I'm concerned, there are two ways to live: take the steering wheel yourself and try to keep on the road you want to take, or put it on cruise control and see what happens (or maybe a bit of both). Whichever you choose, remember that you only have one life (in my opinion) so make the most of it.

If you're a fan of fantasy, read the Lyonesse books by Jack Vance. The story is interesting enough, but the way he writes is compelling - the prose he uses is like something from a childs fairy tale but much more sophisticated. It really draws you in; there are three books and they are my favourite fantasy books by far.

paedophilia...is it a mental illness?
Posted: 4/9/2009 10:14:24 AM
I haven't read all of the posts on this thread, but I'd like to ask, what difference does it make whether or not it's a mental illness?

As a parent I have a very strong feeling about this. I cannot imagine the anguish of parents knowing that their child has been the victim of a paedophile. I'm not normally a violent person but there isn't a jail in the land that would prevent me from exacting revenge on a person who interferred with my child, mental illness or not. That revenge would extend to the persons who knowingly allowed someone with this 'illness' to walk freely amongst us. Call me a bigot, unintelligent, whatever...

I'm also a big fan of Dean Koontz - read pretty much everything he's written! Also most of the Discworld books, although they can get a bit 'same old' and the earlier ones were much more funny.

Another hideous attack by chilren not teenagers!
Posted: 4/7/2009 7:42:34 AM
"Psychopaths are, I believe, born not made. They are unlikely to commit such horrendous crimes at such a young age. They know the difference between right and wrong, they just don't think it applies to them. They also learn how to hide their crimes effectively."

It has been documented in the crimes of past 'psychopaths' that they would often torture small animals and bully other children when children themselves. This was in a period when computer games and violent tv didn't really exist and often the child came from a good background. IMO, when a child behaves as these two did, at this level of violence, it's something not quite right from birth, ie a complete lack of morals, empathy, knowledge of right from wrong or good from bad. I don't think it has to do with parenting or other influences.

The Book Thief and A Thousand Splendid Suns.

The Book Thief is interesting in that it's written from Death's point of view, which is different.

A Thousand Splendid Suns is grim reading, not as inspiring as The Kite Runner.

Too early to tell if either are 'good' - not inclined to give up on them yet.

I meant the people of Britain, who elect their politicians, who presumably nominate the commissioner. Like I said, I'm no expert but I understood that EU commissioners were supposed to act in the interests of the EU, not necessarily their own country. I can confirm, I'm not an EU commissioner. I was trying to be witty and ironic, I obviously failed, just forget it.

It depends on who you mean by 'we'.

I do think being in the EU is a good thing, as long as we as a country are strong enough to control it! I'm no expert, but if Britain left the EU, I think it would fall apart as we provide a huge amount of finance to keep it going. Why we don't use this to our advantage is beyond me.

Should Abortion Services Be Advertised On TV?
Posted: 3/31/2009 4:12:03 AM
"And ask anyone if they would have preferred to be aborted instead of being born."

Well, for a start, I'm not having a go at you Diadolikk, but for purposes of clarity, we are talking about a foetus, not a 'baby' as such. I know there are a many differing definitions of when a foetus becomes a human being, or indeed a life, so I don't want to get into a debate about that (it's one of those debates where no one will agree on the outcome). It's just that the word baby, to me and I imagine to others, conjures the image of a newborn child, not a foetus.

I have a relative who has a baby daughter who was born with brain damage. I don't know what the condition is or what caused it, all I know is that she was on a ventilator for quite awhile before her parents agreed with doctors to turn it off, believing that she would not survive without it. She did survive, but she is unable to move, does not respond to any stimulus and requires constant care. They don't know how long she'll live, but it's thought she won't live to adulthood.

Ask her if she would have preferred to be aborted, and I suspect that, if she was able to speak, or indeed, if she was even aware of her own existence, she would say yes. I know I would.

Just out of interest, are the adverts actually going to advertise abortion services, or are they simply 'pregnancy advice'? Are we, as usual, jumping to conclusions based on media hype? I just can't see anyone actually advertising 'abortion' or termination' services. I certainly would n0t be for that, although I do believe a service offered to young people to educate them about pregnancy and the responsabilities of parenthood would be a good thing, and to advertise it would be beneficial, especially as we have one of the highest rates of teenage pregnancy in Europe.

Pope 'distorting condom science'
Posted: 3/27/2009 6:19:58 AM
BBC article link: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/7967173.stm

This article came up today in the news.

Religion:
"Speaking during his first visit to Africa, the Pope said HIV/Aids was "a tragedy that cannot be overcome by money alone, that cannot be overcome through the distribution of condoms, which can even increase the problem"."

Science:
"But the London-based Lancet said the Pope had "publicly distorted scientific evidence to promote Catholic doctrine on this issue".
It said the male latex condom was the single most efficient way to reduce the sexual transmission of HIV/Aids.
"Whether the Pope's error was due to ignorance or a deliberate attempt to manipulate science to support Catholic ideology is unclear," said the journal."

Which do you support?

Your comments please; this is a contraversial issue, so may I ask in advance that we try and keep it civil - please don't quote out of context, try and stay open minded, do not insult other peoples beliefs and read posts carefully to understand their full meaning before jumping down throats. Although I suppose it's not as entertaining, it would be good to have an adult conversation about this topic.

Edit: The parts I've quoted are just the meat of the article, please read the whole thing to get the context (thanks Pants).

Housing Estate installs Pink lights to stop teens anti social behaviour..
Posted: 3/26/2009 9:17:52 AM
Question for Manhi and Fairyellen: what would you do if, at 1 or 2 o'clock in the morning, a group (say 8 or 10) of young people were having a football game on the street outside your bedroom window? What would you do if they started shouting and screaming, playing loud music from their cars? If this went on for a few hours? If you called the police and nothing happened? What if this happened regularily, say two or three nights a week? What would you do if when you went out to ask them to be quiet, you were verbally abused and threatened, then your car was vandalised?

I don't have any problem whatsoever with a bunch of kids hanging out on a street corner, talking quietly and disturbing no one. The issue is with the above scenario, which happens all to often in many communities. I think in these situations, some kind of deterent is justified.

There are already youth clubs in most areas, but they don't cater to the older teenagers who are out on the street after midnight. It's also unlikely there will ever be such a place created and also that it'll be used even if there was. I used to work in a youth club, all it was was a place for the older teenagers to vandalize. I really enjoyed working with the younger ones, doing DofE training and things, but the older ones were usually a real problem. I eventually left as I felt it was becoming too risky to work with kids in that environment - not enough protection or support - and the kids knew it.

"I would have an issue with something that made people feel ill, how would any of us like it?"

Any of us would not be subject to it, as long as we weren't making life miserable for other people. Like I said above, it can be switched on when neccessary and switched off when not.

Edit: I forgot to say, it's the anti-social ones who ARE the problem though, Pauline; I have no issue with the ones who behave themselves and don't infringe on OUR human rights.

"I was stunned that the contestants (applicants?) were arguing from the very beginning, very entertaining"

Interesting comment Hope. I mentioned the other day on the Jade Goody thread (are we aloud to use her name?) that we're all just voyeurs when it comes down to it. I don't know if it's just this country, but here in Britain we seem to enjoy watching other peoples discomfort. Tabloid newspapers, reality TV arguements, even threads on forums get more interest if there's some form of conflict or someone's getting bashed. Maybe the subject of another thread, but "what's wrong with us?"

In answer to the OP's question though, no, I won't be watching. I prefer fantasies like Heroes, where the good guys always win by virtue and 'hope' prevails - not like the real world at all!

Housing Estate installs Pink lights to stop teens anti social behaviour..

"Forgive my cynicism but it hardly tackles the root cause."

This is true Simon, but like I asked above, what are the alternatives? The obvious (and ideal) one would be to have police on foot patrolling at all hours in places where the kids are likely to congragate. This also has to be funded however and at the moment just isn't possible.

For people who have to put up with this problem, the noise at all hours (usually well after midnight), damage to property, etc, this is a very serious issue. There have been many times when I felt like just going out there myself to confront the kids, as the police wouldn't or couldn't. But look what has happened in other places where people have tried this - assaults, even deaths. We shouldn't have to put up with this. I know of one woman locally who has developed health problems as a result. Unfortunately, she did try to tackle the problem herself and has now become a target.

If they move elsewhere, just install another device - sooner or later they either give up or find somewhere where they're not bothering anyone. Incidentally, the 'Mosquito' works on drunks too, in fact, it's more effective when they're drunk! If anyone has alternative solutions, I'd love to hear them.

Lottery Good Causes ?

"Do you think we are moving too far away from the purposes for which the lottery was originally established"

Yes I do. I don't think any of the money should be used to fund things like the olympics. It should be used to help worthwhile community projects and genuine charities who can account for where the money goes, ie, not on admin or funneled to terrorist organizations.

"should the Government be using our 'good causes' money to bail out their shortfalls"

Absolutely not. Olympics case in point.

We had a problem with teenagers congregating in a particular area of the town I live in. They took to playing football in the street, quite late at night and with no regard for property - parked cars were damaged and windows broken. They would also pull up in their cars, reving engines and playing loud music with the windows down, yelling and screaming at all hours. We'd call the police but they simply either didn't show or said there was nothing they could do, or they didn't have enough man power to deal with it.

A 'Mosquito' device was installed - it's a small machine that looks like a house alrarm which gives of a very high pitch whine, so high that it's not audible to most people. However, in certain age groups (around about up to 25 yo), the noise causes nausea and irritation within a certain radius, so much so that the person within range feels uncomfortable enough to want to move away from the area. The beauty of the thing is they're not aware of the device actually working. Also, it can be switched on only when it needs to be (ie, late at night), not all the time.

Well, it worked a treat - the kids just went elsewhere and piece was restored - that is until some bugger higher up decided it was against the human rights of the teenagers to be subject to this kind of control! So the device was taken down, and the problems returned. Common sense rules again!

I should point out, our town is quite small and the kids congregated in this particular area because it was sheltered, offered a place to sit and it was well lit. Unfortunately, it is also a residential area. They moved on to the park which is more remote and so no one was bothered. So I agree, the safety of the residents is more important than the rights of anti-social trouble makers, and if the teenagers affected by these devices are so annoyed, maybe a bit of self-policing would get them a bit of sympathy. Let's face it, the police can't/won't do anything about it, what are the alternatives?
