Earth Hour ! (but what if we're scared of the dark?)
Posted: 3/28/2009 9:05:34 PM
I did my part too.
Turned off my computer and all the lights at 20 minutes after 8:00. (turned off my computer is a big action, for I almost never had it off).
Managed to get a bowl of ice cream and eaten in the dark - well, it wasn't all dark, for the highrise apartment across the street half the tenants had their full lights on. After the ice cream I did my mediation. 25 minutes after 9:00 I called my daughter in the States to remind her of the Earth hour. Then I started my computer, for a while I was worried it won't started and gave me a black screen.
I think I will do this at least once a week, it was fun and I enjoyed doing things in the dark.

Edit: now I found out I can't get my Shaw email connection, hope it works later!

Brains or Beauty?????????????????????????
Posted: 3/26/2009 7:54:44 PM
According to my own philosophy, if I were to be dumped by a man, of course it would be more excusable to be dumped by a charming handsome guy than to be dumped by an ugly boorish guy; that is, at least I had an obvious reason to fall for him, and had my pride by showing him off be it in the public or to my friends and families.

Note this thread is about Brains vs. Beauty, not about kindness and good heart vs. Beauty.
I have my brains, my So doesn’t has to have more brains than I do, as long as he is holding a steady job and be merry. I am quite happy to settle with a more simply life style with a man who doesn’t have much brains to argue with everything in life.

Beautiful people have no brains is the most false generalization and is a real discrimination against the good lookings. BTW, this thread has been done to death.

I already reported him, so he won't last long here.

So you reported this Thread as Married "intimate encounter" dude trolling.??

So we judge a Thread by who is the poster? So it is a big deal that he is married and looking for intimate encounter, but why should it make his Thread less meaningful or a violation of Forum rule ? The guy is asking a question in the most appropriate Forum, and has provided a good discuss topic. He did get some good comments. It would a shame if this Thread is deleted along with the thoughtful responds from the participants such as message #4 and #5.

Hypothetical dilemma for Vegans/PETA...
Posted: 3/24/2009 7:26:19 PM
First, it is to Jiperly: do you see this smiley on your right top screen when you do your first line of posting? Right upon this smiley, there is instruction for you to follow to quote a previous post. Sorry, dude, I just can't hold myself not helping you on this, you have been posted in here for over 2 months and you still not learning how to quote, may this help you.

Here is a hypothetical situation for those who prescribe to the somewhat extreme
vegan and PETA philosophy concerning the use of animals.
If you were stranded on a desert island, that had nothing but water supply, inedible trees and nothing to to eat but fish and seals, would you eat the animals or strave to death.

If it was me, I am quite sure I would starve to death, for I couldn't even kill a fish so never mind a seal, it is just too bloody and the stinky smell would turn my stomach upside down to great pain that I won't need to eat. And in this case starve to death would have nothing to do with Vegan or PETA.
I honest believe people would eat less meat if they have to kill for it. And I much believe people would eat no meat at all, if there are no fire to cook. So in OP's scenario, one condition must be wood (the inedible tress would do) to start a fire, or without that who would eat a raw seal?

Ha ha! how about change it to: if he would obey his woman,
I think she wouldn't have these problems either...

And just curious, Dear Jason the Fed, is that how you were raised and learned? Your mother must be very submissive, is she???? Behavior from observation starts at home. No joking?

Telephone Solicitation (aka Phone Whoring)
Posted: 3/14/2009 9:20:12 AM
I have to ask why this Telephone Solicitation job still exist? and who are those who has to work like this? Do they have no choice but have to take this kind of insults 8 hours a day for a living so that they can bring some bread home? Do you think the marketers are not human, or if they are indeed human but they have no brain, no self-esteem? Can we not treat them like criminals, can we just kindly decline their offers without being so rude? Why we have to tease, insult those innocent callers? by all means they are only employees. From all the posts in here, it seems to me, some can't even wait until a Telephone Solicitor to call so that they can cruelty practicing their answering skill just for the fun of it.

When telemarketer called, I would just kindly said: I am sorry but I don't understand much English, or I cannot hear well but thanks anyway. They always left me along after my simple answers, never had troubles with them keep calling me back. Tell me, why you have to be so mean to this Telemarketers?

Not criminally responsible?
Posted: 3/11/2009 6:48:47 PM
Had this been me, yes I would consider myself very much a criminal, a heinous one at that, and I would hope that instead letting me live a life so confused and lethal to others, that someone would have the kindness to kill me and not only put me out of my misery but for the safety of others.

I do think Li is living a very confusing and painful life. I agree maybe putting him to death would do him a great favor in ending his own suffering. All I can see in here is that he is to live meaningless for several decade longer in a veggie state, and honestly living for what?? Since in Canada we don't have capital punishment, putting him in a mental institution seems the only fitted solution, when I wish there are better choices.

Not criminally responsible?
Posted: 3/10/2009 10:15:40 PM

proof, this man has violent tendencies ! My question is can a mental illness excerbate a person's hidden violent nature?

Actually what this proves is that he had an schizophrenic episode the day before this event happen. It doesn't say anything about violent tendencies.

^^ by this statement, anyone who has a schizophrenic episode is capable of committing a horrendous act. I disagree, I truly believe it depends on the person's underlying nature.

I have been wondered about this too. I have witness a schizophrenic when at one time bullied by strangers, choose to walk away instead of started a fight and later went home to vent out his anger by hitting the back yard tree. Sure he could get away from the law if he indeed ended up killing any of them people especially when there were proofs that he had been provoked. But even with what I say in here, and even I believe it depends on the person’s underlying nature, how is someone’s nature character alone could be guilty? And how do we know for sure Li’s was acting alone on his violent nature (if he is violent in nature) but not of insanity? I am satisfied that he is right now under treatment; be locked up in the mental institution and could no longer do harm to the public.

Not criminally responsible?
Posted: 3/10/2009 7:39:25 PM
Here is cut and paste from CBC News for you to read:

Greyhound bus killer will be locked up a long time: mental illness expert
Vince Li, who this week was found not criminally responsible for the beheading of a fellow Greyhound bus passenger in Manitoba last summer, will not be walking free any time soon, says an expert on issues involving mental illness.
Annette Osted, executive director of the College of Registered Psychiatric Nurses of Manitoba, said it will be years before Li could even be considered stable enough to be moved from the most secure areas of the Selkirk Mental Health Centre.
And it will be years after that before he could perhaps be considered stable enough to be released from the facility. If that were to happen, Li would be observed up to twice a day while he's out, said Osted.
"He will be assigned a forensic community mental health worker — very often a registered psychiatric nurse — and he will be followed up by that … worker and a psychiatrist for the rest of his days, like permanent parole, if you wish," she said.

Mental health review board not easy on criminals: Osted
If Li were ever freed, he would be reincarcerated at the first sign he was unstable or not taking his medication, said Osted.
She said the mental health review board is often tougher on people found not criminally responsible than a regular parole board.
Since Scurfield's decision, McLean's family has expressed concern whether Li could, in the future, end up free in the community again without supervision.
Osted said the fear is understandable, but she hopes the community can get past it and ensure Li and others who are found not criminally responsible for reasons of mental illness can get the treatment they need.

And here is the link of some stories of the schizophrenia, if you are interested. The WHO estimates that 24 million people around the world suffer from schizophrenia.
That works out to about 300,000 people in Canada, according to the Schizophrenia Society of Canada.

My Master is Stephen Chow.
My deadly weapon is a Flying Yo-yo.
My Yo-yo comes in different sizes in different materials, wood, plastic or steel. Depends on what clothes I wear that day, I may carry more than one with me. So how's that sound to you??? Hey, I like old fashion toys !!!
And then, of course I practice using bamboo flutes and bamboo paper fans too.

Slumdog Child Star Suffering Exhaustion
2 March 2009 4:00 AM, PST | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news
Slumdog Millionaire child star Azharuddin Ismail is suffering from exhaustion and fever as fears mount over the psychological wellbeing of the Oscar-winning film's young actors.
The 10-year-old has developed a temperature of 103 degrees F (39.5 Celsius) since returning home to Mumbai, India last week (begs23Feb09) after travelling with nine-year-old co-star Rubina Ali to attend the Academy Awards in Los Angeles.
Ismail was prescribed antibiotics by doctors but was said to be vomiting as he and Ali returned to school on Saturday.
His mother claims he has had difficulty readjusting to life in the slums after experiencing soft beds, clean water and Disneyland during his five-day trip to California.
Mother Shameem Ismail says, "It has all become too much for him. He is very ill and has not recovered from going to America and all the media interest since we got back."
And Ismail himself adds: "I am very sad. I feel sleepy, hot and sick all the time. I can't get to sleep here - there are too many mosquitoes and it is so hot. I just wish I was in America still."

Meanwhile his co-star Ali is also upset to be home - and is refusing to take off the blue dress she wore to the Oscars ceremony.
She said "I don't want to sleep on the floor anymore. I want a proper bed and live where the air does not smell of poo. I have seen what it is like in America. Here, there is garbage everywhere, people get angry, swear and shout. I have realized how bad life is here. I just want to get out," Rubina declared when she returned.

Social workers have called for the child actors to be placed in care as they attempt to settle back into their lives in India.
Counsellor Sanjay Bhatia, who works in the slum, says, "I cannot believe these kids have just been left like this after being taken to Hollywood. It is bound to affect them psychologically."

Everything to begin with, it has to be my mother. My father should have had me shoot to the wall on that night instead .......oh well! I do like my father though!

Llayne--the government of communist China does not want its citizens googling information on Tibetan independence among other things so any information on this subject is blocked in China. Its citizens can google info on Tibet just not Tibetan independence.

To Touch or Not to Touch-----> my organ!
Posted: 3/1/2009 8:07:18 PM
All I see in here is that it is not up to me to decide to donate my organs or not, it is up to my survivors, in my case it is my 2 kids. Next time when I see them I will bring up this subject, and tell them if they feel comfortable and want my organs to be donated, they can sign the paper, by all mean when that time comes, I am all dead, what would I know? But right at this moment I am still undecided.

My mother is dying soon, since she doesn't speak a word of English, maybe I should tell the doctors that she wants to donate her corneas and whatsoever is still useful, and why not? I never like her and to do this against her will would be my last chance of revenge. But how dare me.........sigh!!!

jason1965, your story is kind of scary.
I don't think it would be that easy to have the life support respirator pull off and let someone die right in front of you and her case was legal? I thought I heard lots of cases that the parents have to go to court to ask the disconnection of life support equipment that hooked onto their brain damaged child. How that your case was so easy? How long was she breathing with a respirator before the team ( including you ) decided she should died within an exact giving time so she could be cut up and divided ?

Sorry but I have to come in this thread to ask a question.

I know every year there is a big used books fair in the NE Calgary. I have books that I want to donate, can someone give me some idea where to drop them off and what's the organization's name or if there a web link I can obtain more information.

Thank you!

Am I missing anything else on my checklist?

yup, you do. You miss the one condition that you must be very happy and fully enjoy doing all as listed.
I, myself cannot enjoy all greasy fast food; so it is not that I don't want to but how and why? And BB, not all men could enjoy experiencing the 118th, that is, until they try it ....... Oops! You tried and you liked it..... (of course I am joking here, no offense)!

To Touch or Not to Touch-----> my organ!
Posted: 2/26/2009 8:18:09 PM
My one question always have been:
If we all mean to die, why should we still save a life ? Who cannot live without who - that particular someone ? If I should die for a failed kidney it should be no different than to die instantly in an accident with no chance and no need for an organ implanted? I am sure my children would just have to survive and live without me even I died during their young age.
Remember Erma Bombeck? She has the privilege to jump ahead of the wait list for a kidney transplant, but she declined the offer for she knew no one life should be more precious than the other.

My second question: how do they know the organs they took would immediate suit those who are waiting? Would it possible that even the organs were not completely matched, the doctor transplanted it anyway ( so not to waste the piece of organ ), and leave the luck to the patients and resulting them in more sufferings ?

But a time ago, I did say I want to donate my organ after I died, I am now somewhat change my mind. Maybe I will donate only my corneas , so that someone can see. There was news couple days ago about a 72 years old woman donated her corneas and gave sight to a young man.

You people already told me about the torture part of the movie, so may I escape the first 20 minutes from the dark in order to better enjoy this film?

The kids from the movie receive an education fund until they reach 18 from a Trust set up by Danny Boyle. Anil Kapoor also donated all his earning from casting to the Street Kids charitable organizations. But Azharuddin Mohammed Ismail still lives under a Tent without a real roof over his head on return home from Oscar.

Will I go to this movie? No, I don’t need to know all about this sad stories of how the dirt poor struggle while their countries have Space Shutter and such. According to what I have read in the Internet, the poverty life of the kids you seen in Slumdog are those live in “better” condition, there are lots and lots of them living worst than what is showed in the film, for example, no electricity, no water, have to travel 2 days on bus for the nearest clinic.

Just wonder if China would allow this type of movie to be filmed in its land? There were headline local news that one man had to dump his mother’s body to the river, because he couldn’t afford to bury her; and a 9 year’s old boy committed suicide after witness his parents fighting over the $30 Renminbi that much needed for him to go to doctor, the boy had a fever for 3 days, and the house had no food to last more than a day. Yup, this happened less than 6 months ago. I am a very very lucky person compare with them.

I really can’t bring myself to watch the Slumdog. Also I agree that there is lots better Bollywood movies than this one.

I just got asked to Move to edmonton from Vancouver any advice.
Posted: 1/28/2009 8:45:13 AM
I lived in Surrey for couple of years. We had a peach and a pear tree in our back yard; growing pear and peach in Alberta is almost impossible.

And then we lived in the West side of Vancouver that we could walk 8 blocks to the beach; but the sky got dark around 6:00 in the evening. In Edmonton and Calgary, most of the summer days, the day light are till 8:00 pm if not 9:00 pm.

Poor OP, he was only asked advice for living in Edmonton, and we all tell him how nice is Vancouver and not to move; God forbid him to quit his job just to stay home.

I was from Vancouver. When it was cold, it was like you were wearing a wet skin over your body and even your soul could shivering from the dampness. Then I moved to Edmonton and lived there for 10 years before I moved to Calgary. Edmonton and Calgary are cold alright, but the humidity is much drier, not sickly damp and moist as Vancouver.

But I love the rain in Vancouver. One summer I was at Granville the Meinhatt, the floral department had nothing but all different kind of white flowers, with the raindrops outside and the fresh scent inside the room, it was such a dreamy afternoon for me that I could still remember today.

Yeah...it's a heck of a lot colder in Edmonton !!!!!!

I really don't think so, Vancouver has/had such a lousy winter this year and the year before with all big snow storms, the winter is actually better in Edmonton if we have to compare.

Calgary Sunday breakfast
Posted: 1/26/2009 10:36:17 PM
Of course we would feel much better if we found out our favorite restaurant is clean with no health establishment violation. I played with the site for a bit and to my surprise there are lots of restaurants that do not have any violation under their file, I mean not even one. And many of them had only under 5 violations that are non-critical. For example Silver Dragon in Chinatown has none and its Banff location only had 2 non-critical ones.

Last night I had New Year Eve dinner at a Chinese restaurant (not Silver Dragon), the food is good. After dinner, we took a short cut through their kitchen to the back door to where our car parked. We saw the kitchen well organized and clean, floor was not wet and counter was not messy, we were pleased of what we saw. What I should mention is this: there was actually a over an inch thin wire in my bowl of fish soup, the wire was from the steel cleaning brush. I asked the waitress to return it to the chef, said that he should keep it for a future reminder. No hard feeling. The food was good, and I will go back there with my friends unless I want to cook at home and it is all unlikely.

After all, love is blind.

I am not really looking for a new place to live. I am very happy of where I am now and comfortable of what I am paying, you see, it is a home office so it worth my $1,300. I am just entertaining myself with the idea of owning a piece of cheap "real estate property", so that in the future when my kids come to visit me, they can stay with me for as long as they wish. If I live in a senior home in the future there would be no room for them. And gee, that $20,000 ad really got my attention and I am mostly just curios.

A little confession in here:
My "first" boyfriend was a white guy from England. I was once engaged to an American pilot and he was the first man who I brought home to visit my mother and grandmother and introduce him as boyfriend. It was in Hong Kong. Those good old days that I would never forgot. We were all young once upon a time, I was so sweet yet devilish.
My husband was almost the only Chinese I dated, and he was not really that Chinese, for he was born in Canada, was the second generation of the Chinese immigrant.
If I am to date again, I would prefer to date a white guy, but then, it is not up to me to say what type of men I won't date, for I won't know who would I fall for.

I read Chinese horoscope, from that I learn I have already passed my golden timing in finding a mate. And the truth is since 3 or 4 years ago, I have less and less wish of finding a life partner.

Special note to Duffy: many moons ago when the time POF allowed us to post our older pictures, I remember you had posted photos that when you were young, and I have to say, Wow, you were sure drop dead gorgeous. ( well, not that you are not good looking now )

Why don't you move somewhere cheaper?

1) I don't drive. I need to be in a city that has full bus services, preferably every 15 minutes. Oh, because I don't drive, don't own a car, that's why I can afford to pay $1,300 for a shelter.
2) my kids don't live in Alberta. One is in US, one is in BC, in case of emergency or sickness, I want them to be able to hop off the plane and run to me as quickly as possible, for that I have to live in a city that has an airport to shorten the travelling time for their sakes.
3) I have hearing problem, I cannot make a living elsewhere as easy as I am in here. In Calgary, I have lots of good old clients / friends in supporting my services and put up with my hearing inefficient. You see, I still need to work for few more years yet.
4) My mother who has Alzheimer, I have to look after her, until she dies, I cannot move out from Calgary.

When people cannot move to a cheaper city or town, it must be for some reasons, not that they haven't thought about the possibility.

Actually, I want to live an island, like Hornby island or such, but sigh.......

Mobile Home in Calgary
Posted: 1/25/2009 9:33:36 AM
The reason I ask is I came across an ad that says mobile home for sale for $20,000 and when I looked up for more information on mobile homes, I found out the selling price for a mobile home could be up to $169,000 in Calgary, which is a huge difference from $20,000.
I am now paying rent $1,300 a month for a 900 sq. ft apartment. The rent included all utilities and cable. For what I am paying now I can of course afford a condo apartment, but I don't have the 100k down payment and I am only qualified for a $150,000 mortgage (that's all I would want anyway). So when I saw that $20,000 mobile home for sales, I was wondering if I can buy a mobile home instead. I always have the idea that Mobile home is not a good deal at all, so I post to find out more.
In a few years, I will be qualified to live in a subsidized senior home, maybe it is a better deal for me. Or I jack up with the down payment for a condo and let the mortgage insurance pay off the remain mortgage when I died, in that case, the sooner I die the better.

Mobile Home in Calgary
Posted: 1/24/2009 7:08:23 PM
Does anybody has experience living or owing a mobile home in Calgary?
So I understand that one can buy a mobile home in a mobile home lots and pay rent for the land; it could be up to $500 a month is it corrected? But do the tenants / owners still need to shovel snows? How about the heating, insulation and roof leaking problem; are this problems the same as owning a townhouse?
And how about the safety? There are 7 mobile home lots in Calgary, are some better than the others?
Why you won't buy a mobile home?
If you or someone you know have bad experience living in a mobile home in Calgary, will you please share the story?

Inauguration Day, Tears of Joy and Fear of Uncertainty

Just a little bit of Chinese mystery to you for fun.

Some Hong Kong Astrologists do a horoscope reading of Obama according to his birthday and his hour of Birth. The result is that he is going to pull through 2009 and 2010 nicely; America is going to recover from its financial mess with gradual steady steps. Obama’s leadership will noticeable to his country and to the world for he is in his powerful astrology decade cycle that enable his intelligence, wisdom to put in use in serving his people. He will be in a more ideal astrology decade cycle starting 2010 to 2019, which means, it is a high possibility he will continue to be the President of America for the decade.

I know it is only a horoscope reading and is usually unreliable. Then, even as a Canadian, I truly hope Obama has all the ability to overcome the difficulties in giving his people the most needed confidence; America is a great country and it always would be.

Different phobias

Caligynephobia - Fear of beautiful women.

But how beautiful the women have to be? Is this phobia restricted to men only?

Chrometophobia - Fear of money.

But the Fear of no money is not even on the list, should we add this on ?

since there are only a few of us coming, maybe we don't even need a private room or best yet to let the restaurant know there won't be 20 people ?? There is always a long line up for Dim Sum at Silver Dragon on weekends, maybe we can spare some room for others ?

From Wikipedia

Dim sum is the name for a Chinese cuisine which involves a wide range of light dishes served alongside Chinese tea. It is usually served in the mornings until noon time at Chinese restaurants and at specialty dim sum eateries where typical dishes are available throughout the day. Dishes come in small portions and may include meat, seafood, and vegetables, as well as desserts and fruit. The items are usually served in a small steamer basket or on a small plate. Yum cha (literally "tea drinking") is the term used to describe the dining session, especially in contemporary Cantonese.

Do a Google and you will see some pictures of the Dim Sum, (and they all looks delicious!)

Ha ha, !Ca$h!, we only care about FAT CHOY, money and more money, we don't care much about New Year Resolution.

Okay, will be there, count me in.
If we can't go on the 18th, do not try 25th, for it is Chinese New Year Eve, that is, unless you want to join the crowd to the Chinese New Year Carnival at Chinese Cultural Centre after Dim Sum.

U & ME don't have the Dim Sum Carts that go around to let you view the Dim Sum before you order, and I hate their service.
Silver Dragon is a bigger place and roomy, I like their Dim Sum much better than U & ME. Or go to 1623 Centre Street NW to Central Grand Restaurant (second floor of a shopping mall) but its parking lot is always full, maybe have to park on the street and walk there.

Another thing is Dim Sum is always sharing, unlike breakfast that you order your own and pay for your own (no separate individual billing), so prepaid to bring cash with you in paying your share of the bill.

Both Silver Dragon and Central Grand can give you a party room or a separated corner if you ask.

Bonus 50% more. Time to light up, all fires and smokes for them delightful little excitement, but it could be addictive and would be quite expensive too, won't it ?
