Help me to interpret end of date, please.
Posted: 6/14/2009 3:49:58 AM
I can appreciate your lack of certainty. I have to have many many many cues before I actually cotton onto a girl liking me! You should call and find out!

why are men reluctant to get involved with someone who has kids
Posted: 6/14/2009 3:15:39 AM
Not all men are avoidant of single mums. I'd quite like my daughter to have friends to play with instead of boring old Dad!

Self Harm
Posted: 6/2/2009 2:26:53 PM
Self harm as attention seeking is such a boring statement. I have self harmed since my teenage years, feelings of unreality, frustration and self loathing usually set me off. My scars are hidden and there are no more than 2 people in the world that know about them, so attention seeking? I don't think so...

I am ashamed of my scars and would never think of entering another relationship mostly because of them. How hard is it to explain that you are mildly normal even though you have deep cuts to your upper arms and shoulders!!!

I know it's a bit weird to cut yourself but as someone already said, it's just like going out when you are pissed off and drinking til you throw up.

Single parents with mental health issues - advice please
Posted: 6/2/2009 2:12:56 PM
Yup...

Was in hospital last year and spend a lot of my time ruminating over how bad I am as a Dad to my lovely daughter (I am sure I am actually pretty good though???!!!). I find it hard but my only wish is that she grows up a happy girl, so in many ways it is positive cause that's all I focus on.

Mental illness gets on my nerves, but at the same time it has also given me loads of good times too, so I can't work out if I would live without mental health problems or not?

Meds - for bipolar and depression
Posted: 5/11/2009 9:44:20 AM
I have a Bipolar diagnosis and all the usual trimmings that go with it, like a lovely christmas dinner of mental health!

Meds are: Quetiapine, Pericyazine and Citalopram.

All very yummy!

Did use of psychadelic drugs spark long-term benefits to your mind, thinking and logic?
Posted: 5/10/2009 12:11:17 PM
Hard to say if I used them cause I looked at the world differently already - Or like you say they permanently expanded my mind after use. Hmmmmmmmmm.....??????

Is it better to be alone than to compromise?
Posted: 3/8/2009 4:34:31 AM
I am alone but not lonely. It would be a complete crisis for me to be in a relationship, can't even look after myself let alone someone else!!!

separated from bipolar husband
Posted: 2/3/2009 3:20:01 PM
This thread is starting to discust me, Bipolar Affective Disorder is so far removed from what most of you guys are talking about.

You are describing things completely different from what the illness is. A good readable source is 'An Unquiet Mind' by Kay Redfield Jamieson.

I think it is perfectly valid for Bipolar people to join in this discussion if they think they are being misrepresented?

Good topic as I always ask a few dumb questions and people usually seem to reply with something that doesn't seem to extend to conversation. Still at least they reply that's nice of them!

separated from bipolar husband

I am Bipolar (I have an official diagnosis and not a glossy magazine diagnosis), most people seem to be describing people who seem to have a personality disorder or anger management issues or really fast mood swings: This is not really what Bipolar is!

Most people with Bipolar have much longer cycles over months even years (unless they are rapid cycling bipolar). My Bipolar illness can make me extremely energetic - when high I once cycled from lands end to john o groats 874 miles in 3 days 15 hours with only 6 hours sleep, I then crashed from this high and was clinically depressed for almost a year after. When high I can become abit grandiose and when very ill I beleive I have special powers, I can hear voices and see things that aren't there, but I never get
aggressive.

Mental health has a ridiculous stigma attached, people are scared of the not ' normal'. I though consider myself a normal guy who takes his pills that make him fat but keep him stable and able to do a degree in nursing and go out and have friends, never been in trouble with the police, never hit my wife or kids, never even shouted at them blah blah blah...

Misunderstood!
Posted: 1/17/2009 2:25:35 AM
Hi,

Just wanted to say that I think dyslexia is a very misunderstood topic. Typical jokes always centre on not being able to spell but never really represent dyslexia and the reasons for it. When I was diagnosed at 24 the psychologist talked me through the working memory problems (holding one bit of information in your head whilst you process another) that people have. The getting to the end of a sentance and not remembering the start, concentration and I even get angry when reading double negatives (another working memory problem).

The psychologist said it has behavioural problems attached and in my case I would agree, because I would get so frustrated doing written work or copying off the blackboard (i would read what was on the blackboard but by the time my head dropped to the paper to write it down my working memory had let me down, ended up having to copy one word a time!), I would have angry outbursts.

However, I see dyslexia as a blessing, I can learn anything visual like anatomy and maps really easily and now when I am learning I use these things. My IQ is all over the place, the components that make up the test are all either rubbish or excellent with very little middle ground!

I guess I am a little sad that it wasn't detected earlier, I wonder what I could have achieved if I had of had the help I have now and at 33 I am only just fulfilling my academic potential!

Cheers,

Jason.
