Tax payers repeatedly bailing out for flood damage
Posted:

The flood waters receding from the Cowichan and Duncan areas on Vancouver Island bring this topic to the forefront again. The affected people face devastating losses and need money and some seek compensation.
One guy on featured on the news said he used to joke about living across the street from a dike, but it isn't so funny anymore.
The Ministry of Environment's map of British Columbia showing Designated Floodplain Areas (5.4MB PDF) designates much of that area as floodplain.

Should men and women live together?
Posted:
11/22/2009 5:47:04 PM
I know some couples who married while they were young, have been happily married all their lives and have celebrated 50, 60 and more anniversaries. They are good,... err... great examples men and women living together.
There is statistical data that married (includes the unhappily married) people live longer than single people.
While this is a good discussion keep in mind that opinions contributed from a dating website would come in large part from single people.

If I have not heard of the place there is a good chance it is far away.
While there is considerable merit with this philosophy I've learned some people can't spell worth a hill of beans, not even the town they live in.

Kelowna is a big city
I have visited Kelowna and too thought it was a relatively big city, far bigger than most towns I have lived in. Definitely too big for my taste.

You know you are not in the big city anymore when....
* When the number of traffic lights is less than ten.
* When you can walk or cycle past pedestrians and greet them and they respond in kind, instead of the puzzled "WTF?" expression or icy stare common to the big city?
* When you can not order take-out pizza at 3 am, because they rolled up the carpets hours before.
* When you can not find a venue to go dancing most every night.
* When you find in your community there are few people of desired age range and gender with public membership on Plenty of Fish.
* When you discover you are the only person from your town that posts in the Plenty of Fish forums more than once a month.

Are We Simple-Minded re Technology?
Posted:
11/22/2009 10:34:33 AM
Hi-tech can offer so much to us.
The police uses remotely controlled robots to disarm bombs, thereby lowering the risk a human will be harmed.
It is through such advances that people needing medical diagnosis or treatment can remain in their relatively remote communities while a far-away doctor can diagnose and even perform medical procedures.
However technology enables the heroic efforts to make possible the birth of a sickly fetus which truly should be left to perish, and similarly prolong the life of someone who would be fated to life of agonizingly poor quality and would prefer to die a natural death.
There are scores of people who resist the touted benefits that technology offers. Remember the outrage about Dolly, the cloned sheep?
Monsato Corp. had some disastrous results when the market rejected their genetically modified food.
Farmers who have owned the land for generations get squeezed out by huge corporations that farm vast amounts of land with armies of behemoth farm equipment which provide them a lower operating cost per acre. There are automated tractors equipped with GPS navigation that don't need a human at the controls.
OP, you have reminded me of this thread. "
How we influence human evolution
"
http://forums.plentyoffish.com/datingPosts12327747.aspx
Anyway, remembering what a pain it was to get up to adjust the volume or change channels I am pleased that I have a remote control for my TV. I just wish there was better content to enjoy.

How Many Positions – a BC forum count
Posted:

Add one more the list...
Two cowboys are out on the range talking about their favorite sex positions.
One says, "I think I enjoy the rodeo position the best."
"I don't think I have ever heard of that one", says the other cowboy. "What is it?"
"Well, it's where you get your girlfriend down on all fours, and you mount her from behind, and you reach around and cup each one of her breasts in your hands, and then whisper in her ear, 'Boy, these feel just a little smaller than your sister's' and then you try to hold on for eight seconds."

Evident despite all the technology at their disposal those air traffic controllers aren't that reliable. Too many going down (in the "bush"?) and getting lost, never to be seen again.

Chocolate Lovers - Whats the best???????
Posted:

I have discovered that Lindt makes "Chili Piment Rouge" (dark chocolate infused with red chili). I've never tasted such chocolate and I bought some for the POF event next weekend.
It has been difficult to resist the temptation to try it, 'cause once I have opened the package... well I'm confident it would be a goner.
Evidently Roger's also makes a chili chocolate bar called "FIRE" but I've not come across it in a store.

what i got in my mail today

Got this today.
Hello,
My name is Elena, I am 32 years old and I writing you from small Russian city. I works in town bibliotheca and I permitted to use computer after I finish work when possible. Our position is terrible and I send you this message in despair and hope.
I have daughter, she has 8 years old, her father left us and we inhabit together with my mother.
As consequence of crisis lately my mother losed job (bakehouse at she worked is now ruined} and our position became horrible.
Prices for gas and electricity are very expensive in our town and we cannot use it to heat our home anymore.
The wintertime arriving and weather is very cold here already. We very much disquieted and we do not know what to do.
The only possible way for us to heat our home is to use transportable wood burning oven which provide heating from burning wood. We have many wood in our area and this oven will heat our sleeping room all winter for minimal charges.
Unluckily we can not to purchase this oven in our market because it monetary value 8100 roubles (equivalent about 191 Euros) and we cannot afford it.
If you possess any old conveyable wood burning oven and if you stoped to use it, we will be very happily if you can donation it for us and organize transportation of this oven to our address (175 km from Russian capital). This ovens may be different and weight 100-150kg.
I desire to have your answer soon.
Elena with family.
Russia
Aww, what a sad story...
Situation can't be that bad if Elena can use a computer and send spam email.

I like my penis just fine, thanks for asking. I don't really think much of other penises, and my penis is the only penis I'm truly attached to, though appreciate Dad having put his to good use.
While I've never used my penis for a coat hook, I'm pleased that it functions perfectly as intended.
Rodney Carrington singing "Dear Penis" is hilarious.

Just another non priority - but I am getting tired of looking at the same dude with the fake painted on mustache and straw hat, and some other dude with some bizarre pac man puppet hat ... thankfully this can be alleviated by logging into the forums.
When I view my local "Singles Events" page I see several dudes,
even when I am logged in
.
I just checked and viewed the events page for another province and a US state and was shown the same set of dudes from my province (not dudes from those other regions).
Presumably the determination of which set of dudes is shown to me is based on the province registered in my profile.

Looking at Breasts is Healthy
Men looking at women's breasts in fact prolong their lives with years.
10 Minutes Of Staring at Breasts Daily Prolongs Man's Life by 5 Years
According to German research published in New England Journal of Medicine, men staring at women's breasts in fact prolong their lives with years.
"Just 10 minutes of looking at the charms of a well-endowed females is equivalent to a 30-minute aerobics work-out," said author Dr. Karen Weatherby, a gerontologist.
The team led by Weatherby was made up of researchers at three hospitals in Frankfurt, Germany, and found this results after monitoring for 5 years the health of 200 male subjects, half of whom were asked to look at busty females daily, while the other half had to abstain from doing so.
For five years, the breasts oglers presented a lower blood pressure, slower resting pulse rates and decreased risk of coronary artery disease.
"Sexual excitement gets the heart pumping and improves blood circulation. There's no question: Gazing at large breasts makes men healthier. Our study indicates that engaging in this activity a few minutes daily cuts the risk of stroke and heart attack in half." said Weatherby, who even recommends that men aged over 40 should spend at least 10 minutes daily admiring breasts sized "D-cup" or larger.

http://www.wholefitness.com/looking-breasts.html
Are there any buxom fishies willing to participate in a study to corroborate this finding? I'd be willing to schedule at least 10 minutes a day.

H1N1 vaccine. Are you getting a shot?
Posted:
11/19/2009 7:25:57 PM
For the benefit of those still hoping to get the H1N1 shot, and not having TV service, on the evening news tonight it was announced that starting tomorrow anyone, general public, can get their shots. Go to your local walk-in-clinic (if your community has one).
Hoping I remembered correctly the numbers... I also heard earlier today, there have been some 6 million H1N1 shots administered and only 36 cases of severe reaction. So the probability of you having a severe reaction to a flu shot are very slim.

What constitutes a Work of Art?
Posted:
11/19/2009 3:42:12 PM
The definition of a work of art is dependent on the artist and the viewer.
Mother Nature continues to bless us with examples of art: a baby's smile, a rainbow, a flower, an iceberg, a bird's feather (and no, I am not referring to my tail feathers) and of course the lovely shape of a female human form.

Global TV had a guest who was extolling the virtues of the "
LiteBook Elite
" which is designed to address this very problem of not getting enough sunshine in the winter. It is also great for resetting your circadian rhythms if you are experiencing jet lag.
The Litebook is small and portable (Size: 5" x 5" x 1" (12.5cm x 12.5cm x 2.5cm)) It uses LEDs, emits no UV radiation, and you only need to get 15-20 minutes of its light during the beginning of your day (while eating breakfast, checking email, etc.) $200.
More details at:
http://www.litebook.com
Of all the solutions I've seen advertised or suggested for SADS I think this product is by far the best solution.

Estimated time to restore service is noon on Thursday.
I'm glad I have a generator. It is especially useful for running the furnace, as well cycling the deep freezer and refrigerator to prevent food spoilage before I shut down for the night.

Is a guy that cooks *so* rare?
Posted:

TIPS: stay away from spicy foods and broccoli on your first few dates it causes gas and makes situation uncomfertable, especially on a first date.
Are you kidding us? Spicy foods cause gas? Nope!
I cook will all kinds of spicy foods, HOT peppers, chili peppers, etc. and have never experienced a problem with flatulence and nor has anyone that has eaten my cooking.
If you were to put those spices in something else that might cause flatulence, for example chil con carne, you might have a problem, but it is from the beans, not the spices.

for a guy I would stalk up on his fav coffee...a nice mug perhaps
I tend to be a tad rough on dishes, so can always use more mugs.
In fact it was just this morning when I discovered a huge chip in the rim of my favourite mug, the chip ruining a cherished item because it was the last gift I received from my kid.
The graphic on the mug is a man in his little boat and he's got a huge fish, much bigger than his boat, on his line. In fact the boat is perched precariously atop the big fish.
The caption
"Dad, of all the fish in the sea, you're still the best catch!"

What if this 'vest' is full of stones and you know it.Woud you still encourage people to wear one ????
I'd rather wait for other ,safer "devices"....if any (since our 'lifeguards' have seemed to have a pact with devil).
Pact with the devil
? Wow! Apparently the conspiracy theory virus runs rampant.
The logic some people follow to reach a decision on the matter of getting a vaccination is as unsound as the logic of not wearing seat belts in a motor vehicle.
Sure there is a probability that in some very specific circumstances a seatbelt will prove to decrease your odds of surviving the crash, though those specific circumstances comprise only a very small minority of all motor vehicle accidents. In the vast majority of crashes seat belts save lives.
It would be interesting to determine how strong a correlation there is between people who don't wear seat belts and the people who argue against getting vaccinations.
What I really like about these discussions is how it draws people to reveal their thinking is unreasonable or reasonable.
I am attracted to reasonable people.

But, sure would not want to be onboard a sinking ship with them.
You remind me of the many people who go boating every year and won't, despite considerable efforts to educate them about the risks and encouragement to wear one, refuse put on a Personal Floatation Device or Life Vest... and drown.

I recently saw a bumper sticker.
"Choose life.
Your mother did."
Fortunately my family's planning has never had to make this choice but the dam slogan nearly succeeded in making me feel guilty about my beliefs.
I got to thinking that just because someone is born doesn't necessarily mean their mother had a choice in the matter.

all season vs all weather tires - who knew there was a difference?

I had the misfortune of needing to take my vehicle to the shop for repairs today . The shop sells tires too so thinking of this discussion I asked the service manager if he had any literature from ICBC that explained their position on the matter of and differentiating between "All Season", "All Weather" and "Snow" tires.
He explained that ICBC has been very cagey about this issue. If you are involved in a motor vehicle accident ICBC puts the onus on the police. The police officer has the discretion to declare if your tires are, or are not, adequate for the driving conditions, regardless if the tires are rated "All Season", "All Weather" or "Snow" tires,
I took at look at those Nokia "Vativa" tires mounted on my vehicle. They are "All Season" and have a "M+S" label (Mud & Snow), but I did not find a snowflake symbol that would rate them as snow tires.
* * * * *
He raised another interesting issue, one I hadn't encountered before.
All new vehicles are equipped with wheels that have a required tire-pressure sensing device inside the tire. The sensor that can activate a "low tire pressure" warning light on the dashboard. In some models, if the warning is activated the vehicle's top speed is limited.
It no longer makes sense to have just the one set of wheels and have the tires changed to adjust to season. When the tire is removed there is a 30% chance the sensor (approx, $200) will be damaged in the process.
This means that motorists wishing to have two sets of tires will be facing the cost of buying the wheels and sensors too, not just the tires.

Choosing the Perfect Gift!

*home-made CDs, videos – make one of elderly family members experiences
*coupons from you – babysitting, free hugs&kisses, something you can teach – yoga, dance, cooking, for a hike or event, dinner at your home, massage, favours
I have done these.
I made a music mp3 CD with several hours of dance tunes for a lady who loved to dance. She loved it and played it often.
I presented a gift certificate for a body massage. She was delighted but alas never had the opportunity to make the trip to take advantage of it before starting a relationship with another guy.
Can anyone add to this list?
A knitted tea cozy for the bachelors with tea pots but who don't go to craft fairs.
