Gotta love the media, biggest 1 day point increase in history, The Star gives it 1/4 page mention in the Business Section.
We're in for another volatile day, but I do agree with the confidence expressed on this thread.

Stock Market Panic
Posted:

As it is very near and dear to me, I was watching an arguement on CNBC. One of their experts was taunting an economist regarding making an admission to the looming recession. The economist was adamant that the US is not in a recession at this time and that the economy is actually much healthier than most "expert media" personalities would have you believe.
At least the US Fed acted quickly and lowered their Rate by 3/4% and it seems that markets on both sides reacted positively.
It will be interesting as to how the media spins the 1 day record increase on the TSX, as yesterdays 10th worst drop garnered front page on every publication.

Would you put all your money in a mutual fund?
Posted:

Speaking from a biased point of view, I agree with most and not with others, find yourself a financial planner, broker/investment advisor. Any planner worth their salt would never advise a single investment strategy, they would implement an individual plan addressing the your goals and most importantly your tolerance to risk.
And yes, we get paid on the product we sell, but we also are remunerated on the clients we keep. It's easier and more efficient to retain a client and get referrals, rather than continually going out for new business..
A good planner will look after your interests (it is our fiduciary duty) and try their utmost to meet your goals and hold on to you as a client, get easy referrals and network from there.
Self directed investing is OK for some but has proven over the long run to be akin to assuming the role of a pro, ie....doing your own will, closing your own real estate transaction, pulling your own teeth. I have yet to see a do-it-yourself appendicitis book/video/CD, but if someone thought they could profit from it, they would most certainly try.
As a group we are educated and licensed by the securities regulators and scrutinized more so than most may believe. We are obliged to continue our education to better serve our clients and most of us strive to be the best we can. The better we do for our clients, the better we do for ourselves. If I can double a clients money in 8 years, I double my residual income on that client and can assure you they will refer me some business.
Hopefully you will find an advisor that will do right by you.

Is there a Financial Advisor in the House? Smith Manouevre for Home Ownership.
Posted:
3/18/2007 8:03:00 AM
I've been approached by clients regarding this "Smith Manouevre", but have yet to initiate it with any of them. We tend to do variations of it.
The deductablity of your interest payments on your mortgage is a long and slow process but it will work with a long term plan. The coles notes version is as follows:
Mortgage is now a credit line, ie., 200,000
As you make your mortgage payments your loan remains at 200K but the principal
applied against your home on a monthly basis now gets flipped into an investment loan.
Scenario:
200,000 Credit line at Prime 6% over 25 years payments $1,279.62
1st payment 987.72 interest, 291.90 principal, you now buy the equal amount of 291.90 in investments.
Now your 200,000 loan is 199,708.10 home mortgage , 291.90 investment loan
2nd payment 986.28 interest, 293.34 principal, you now buy the equal amount of 293.34 in investments.
Now your 200,000 loan is 199,414.76 home mortgage , 585.24 investment loan
This scenario is applied to every payment.
The interest deductability applies to the investment loan amount and will eventually surpass that of the home portion of your payments.
Feel free to email me if you would like further clarification.

POF GTA Golf Tournament, June 19th, 2007???
Posted:

If we have enough interest, we can do this with golf, cart and breakfast or lunch for $60.00-$100.00.
One of the options is Rolling Hillls near Stouffville Rd and Warden, minutes off the 404.
The date is flexible.
Any takers and/or suggestions?

We tried this last year and due to restrictions, never got it going.
I was considering a central/north course for access by all.
Hoping for a renewed interest in what could be a great meet and greet.
We need to see how many are willing to sign up in order to secure a location and get pricing.

There is no single all encompassing answer. You should find a trusted advisor and work with them to achieve your personal goals, ie. retirement, major purchase, education.
Talk to people you know and try to get a referal, be it a bank rep, broker, financial planner.
There must be someone local, a firm or individual you can go to for advice. Interview a few of them and make a decision from there.

I will treat others as I wish to be treated.
I agree to think before I post.
I will not attack anyone.
I will not bully anyone.
I will not degrade anyone.
I will not threaten anyone.
I will not post topics that violate POF's code of conduct.
I will not message someone just to insult them and put them down.
Although my opinions may differ from someone elses, I will not attack them just because they have an opposing point of view.
If I have a private matter that needs to be dealt with, I will deal with it privately.

Smokers!!!!
Posted:
3/26/2006 7:00:38 AM
Just a note regarding the "financial burden" of us smokers:
"Meanwhile, the claim that smokers are a drain on the health care system has been debunked by Health Canada’s own research, said Ms. Daigneault, noting that a 1997 Health Canada, which looked at 1991 when smoking rates were higher, found smokers paid $5.4 billion a year more into the health care system than they took out."
I am a smoker and do not condone the habit, but I am tired of Myths that are consistently propagated by the anti smoking side.

Golf Tournament, GTA??

I understand and expect to find a willing golf course in the GTA once we have a better indication of the number of participants and the date, at which time they can book their green fees and or tournament package directly with the chosen venue.
I hope this falls within the guidelines.

Best Ball is beginning to sound like the way to go, that way all should be able to contribute.
We should try and even out the teams based on handicap, official or percieved( I finished the season at a 12)
Once we pick a date and place we can request to move this thread over to the Party side.

scorpitarious,
June sounds good and the mixed foursomes would be more conducive to the meet and greet idea of a POF gathering.
As for other ideas, I can’t contact you due to your mail restrictions on age(I’m getting old).
Any input is welcome, and the more the merrier.

OK guys and hopefully ladies in future, let's try and get a reasonable head count in the next couple of weeks and narrow down a June or July weekend, pick a course and start swinging.
How's about some ideas on making it more interesting, ie. Low Gross, Low Net, Longest Drives, Closest to the Pin, maybe a Stableford Scoring System, Best Ball??
Maybe some Big Break like skills challenges? Wouldn't you just love to break that GLASS.

I agree about investment firms. With tomorrow's deadline looming, it's a sad truth that 1,000s of Canadians will line up at their bank and ask a teller with a registration to help them with their financial future.

Anyone interested in a frienldly POF golf tournament?
Could be a great Saturday or Sunday meet and greet for any interested POF'rs.
Golfers of all levels welcome.
Depending on interest we could try to get some sponsorship to help in a prize fund, possibly involve helping a charity.
Lots of possibilities.

You should log all of your attempts, ie., calls, letters, emails and/or faxes and try Ministry of Consumer and Commercial Relations and a cc to the CRTC.
Last time I had a problem with Bell, and no quick resolution, I tried it and had a call from one their VP's immediately, they resolved the matter within a week.
Hope it helps.
