Windows7 Rc, have you got yours?
Posted: 6/1/2009 3:07:03 AM
For s***s and giggles I finally decided to download this "final beta" to play around with. It looks like Vista but runs like XP. I'm running it on really generic laptop, Everex brand, with full VIA chipset, so it's already got an odd hardware config to start with. I was pleasantly surprised when 7 fully installed everything right off the bat without requiring drivers. A single driver update later it was fully current.

Now for the "hater" part...... As a guy who uses a Mac for a primary machine... I'm seeing things here that OSX had at least 2 releases ago..... such as the translucent taskbar (our dock is see through). I also noticed that the new Windows Explorer is almost a direct Finder ripoff. The one thing I like about Windows over OSX was the quick keyboard navigation of Windows Explorer. Now, there is no sidebar with drives, just the standard OSX type drives, favorites, shared, etc.

Would I use this for a primary OS upon final release? No. I will still stay with OSX. But I will give MS some props for finally putting out something that actually works (so far..).

P.S. As a sidenote of sorts, I've been a Windows user since day one, Windows 3.11. I have a long history as a tech, and made the switch to OSX last year and haven't looked back.

Anyone have the new G1?
Posted: 6/1/2009 2:54:11 AM
an alternative is boost mobile. for 50 a month (as opposed to your current 40 a month) you can get unlimited EVERYTHING.

minutes, texts, etc. the java menu offers instant messaging, games, etc.

you might like it.

question about building a website
Posted: 6/1/2009 2:52:07 AM
the drop dead easiest route for building a site, has got to be Apple's iWebs program. it isnt available for windows, but if you use a mac its great to use.

Windows 7 to have an 'XP mode'
Posted: 4/24/2009 8:16:41 PM
you consider 2 minutes fast??

my duron 800mhz with 640mb of ram loads xp faster than that.

xp can be made pretty fast by
A> keeping it clean. have a good virus scan, routinely sweep for adware/malware etc
B> reducing how much stuff starts up at once. if you have yahoo, aim, msn, facebook alerter, and lots of crap starting up on boot, then yes, your boot times will be greater than the warmup times of my old C10 pickup in the winter.

a storyline

i suppose i could just simply post up what i have written. instead i'll just link folks to my website.

on my site you will find all my poetry, stories, and other interesting articles, along with things written by friends of mine.

here is the link http://theotherstyle.50webs.com

my writings are under "Writings of Lumpy"
my friends writings are under "Writings of Zero"
and there is a group story that is taking me forever to put up. over 300 chapters in all. god help me it takes forever to edit and post them all. but you will find them under the "meathook racing" tab. scroll to the bottom of that page, hit archive, start at the beginning, and enjoy.

Alternatives to Norton
Posted: 3/31/2009 3:14:29 PM
i should add to my above post....

another thing that helps is keeping windows fully updated, as well as other software you use. also use as many alternatives as possible. use firefox instead of IE. use OpenOffice (free at openoffice.org) instead of ms office. winamp instead of windows media player (winamp actually has more features than windows media, and is free). give virii, malware, and spyware less ways to get in.

if you are running a wireless network at home, make sure to set up the wep/wpa security settings so that other people walking by cant openly access your connection, and henceforth seeing your home computers. if you have a wireless router, but no wireless devices, turn off the wireless part of the router.

there is so much that people can do to protect themselves against digital intrusions. all one has to do is ask someone who knows.

Alternatives to Norton

On a side note, if you're running vista on 1 GB, I'm still a firm believer you're waisting your time before you even install Antivirus

i'm gonna have to go ahead and disagree with that. i am a tech, and for the longest time i was running vista ultimate on a dell inspiron b130 laptop. 1.4ghz celeron m (or d, one of the two), 1gb of ram, and 64mb of video ram. again...vista ultimate. the bloated of the bloated. from within that, i ran it dual screen (extended desktop onto an external monitor), ran 2 filesharing programs, winamp (much better than windows media player), vlc (video player), 3 messengers, world of warcraft, all while actively scanning with NOD32 antivirus. and guess what, nod32 kept up quite well. matter of fact i had very little system lag at all.

its never "not worth" installing an antivirus on a windows machine, unless its norton, kapersky, or avg.

i've run avg and nod32 head to head. avg came out looking like roadkill each time. nod32 caught everything i threw at it, plus detected potential network intrusions as well. what did avg do? not a damn thing.

a good combo for people to run is nod32, spybot, windows malicious software remover, and windows firewall. supplement that with routine use of programs like Rogue Remover, and CleanUp, (Nod32 is the only piece in all of that that isnt free. yes, i just said almost all of the above is free. imagine that.). thats what i've been doing with my pc's and my friends pc's for a few years now, and guess what, nobody in the networks that i service every have problems. i gave them the tools, showed them how to use them, and i havent had to redo a single computer in my social circles since. most of my regular customers on the other hand.....

anyway, back to the point, doesnt matter what your system specs are, use an antivirus.

What do you bring to the table!!
Posted: 3/5/2009 8:42:57 AM
what do i bring to the table? for starters the opinion that women that judge a man by his monetary value before anything else need an open palm man hand slap to the face for being so naive.

mtv and the rest of the pop culture in this country (USA) has everyone thinking that if you arent rich , you arent shit. and its not a good thing.

so what do i bring to the table? not much in the way of money, thats for sure. but where i lack in fiscal, i make up in other departments. I'm a very skilled laborer, i grew up doing construction, computer work, mechanical work. i went to school for electrician (a career that sadly never panned out), i have worked as a mechanic for two different garages, and i've done a lot of general labor at factories and groundswork. and i am right now coming home from almost 10 months on the road for work (well, it wasnt completely on the road, i ended up at a shop for 6 months, one of the aforementioned garages), with an interview lined up the day after i get back for a job that promises to be quite fun should i get hired.

with all of that, no, i've never made a lot of money, at least not enough to matter, what with school bills, dr bills, and of course, child support (common in this country) to pay. i've had some nice vehicles, but time and again i've had to sell them when money was low (in between jobs). in the overal scheme of things, fiscally i'm not really where i should be, but eventually i will get there. in the mean time,

what else do i have to offer? a great personality to share with someone that can handle some eccentricities, good cooking skills, i clean, hell i can even sew. and of course, i offer my dedication and emotional support to whomever i am with.

Best Pizza Place in Your Hometown
Posted: 3/1/2009 10:04:46 PM
the best around here?

mario's in mukwonago

next door pub in lake geneva

i can also recommend one in schuylkill county, pa. Dimaggio's in minersville. the pizza is cheap, and the meat is dried out before cooking, so its not a total greasepit. the taste is freakin awesome.

in oakland county, mi? dolly's pizza. nice homemade taste.

My first turkey.
Posted: 3/1/2009 9:45:02 PM
a good way to make a super juicy turkey:

make sure the pan has a good bit of liquid in it, like a couple inches or so.

start the turkey upside down, as in breast side down.

halfway through cooking, flip it over to normal.

once it comes out the entire thing will be juicy from top to bottom all over. use beer or wine for a liquid and i'm sure it will be even better

give it a shot, lets see what ya think.

truthfully, introvert probably does describe me. i've never been one for large groups, i prefer small get togethers, and one on one is absolutely ideal for me lol. idk, i can go to functions with large groups, i'm just never really comfortable. i'm seriously the guy that brings a book with, for something to do if i can't find compatible people to associate with.

wanna know whats funny about that? when i'm in a small group, like a few friends, i'm probably one of the most outgoing of the bunch...... must be something wrong with me

I will see if I can get some pics tomorrow, but I've pretty much always been interested. I've always found japanese swords more elegant, and the fighting styles ditto, not to mention that the japanese samurai were a very honorable people.

yes, i did mean the faires and such. I've always been fascinated with it, and I even swordfight, how about that lol.

The "mugshot" was me playing with my new camera a couple weeks ago, and the frontal shot my buddy kept walking back...idk why....

Yeah, I know the bad part. But I grew tired of meeting up with females who's most exciting thing in life was owning a freakin' PT Cruiser....sorry... I wanna meet someone like me, that likes working on things, enjoys things more entertaining than "Friends", etc etc. The ones that look past the sarcasm and see what I have to offer are the ones most likely to garner my full attention.

For $***s and giggles, if anyone wants to review mine...I wouldn't mind seeing what people have to say about someone who tends to be brutally honest...odds are, however, that I likely won't change it from how it is written. Its written as it comes, for thats how I come.

But as I said...give it a shot.
