Social Anxiety
Posted: 5/1/2009 8:44:09 PM
I have always been painfully shy, to the point where my throat threatens to close up. I force myself everyday to talk to people, to meet thier eyes, I've even recently cut my hair short because a co-worker said something about me hiding behind my hair. Yes, quite often, while forcing myself to speak...the wierdest things pop out of my mouth. I try my best to see the funny side instead of being mortifyingly embarassed by these 'social tourettes' bouts,(sometimes this works, sometimes not so much).
I find that a lot of 'self talk' or internal lectures prior to the situation helps, practice things I might say, a few deep breaths, picture myself being successful at socializing, etc.
I also don't hear well at large gatherings, so I spend alot of time smiling and nodding :(

Dancing Naked
Posted: 12/11/2008 7:52:47 PM
The more formal the dress, the more rules there are to the dance. (Picture tuxedos and formal ball gowns...in your mind, listen to the music and watch the dance...the smiles are fake and the movements are stiff and ritualized)
The more casual you dress, the fewer the rules. (Picture blue jeans...in your mind as you listen and watch...you hear the "Yee Haw" and the laughing, don't you?)
Can't get more casual than naked. In this state you are the closest you'll ever get to total honesty and the original reason for dancing-To express joy and rejoice in being alive. No rules, no responses pre-determined by what is considered to be socially acceptable, no manners and rules of ettiquette that you 'have' to follow. Just you and what you are feeling at that exact moment.

Long delays in voice mail delivery to cell phone accounts
Posted: 8/18/2008 6:16:12 PM
Our business phones are with telus mobility. Too often, important time sensitive information takes a side trip into the unknown. This happens mostly with messages I send to my drivers from the office email to their phones, but it has also happened with text and voicemail.
Telus customer service doesn't seem to see a problem with me dragging kids out of bed at 3 a.m. to go back to the office to get an address, phone number or other important instructions to a driver stuck in the middle of a job he can't finish without that info.
They will, however, sell us this outrageously expensive GPS tracking/computerized dispatching package that will suit our needs soooo much better....yaaaaa uh huhhh, they can't manage to get info from point A to point B with a simple cell phone, and we're to believe they can do better with a more complicated system??

Sleeping Through The Night
Posted: 3/31/2008 6:08:21 PM
I'm kennel training a yelpy lil yorkie at the moment(3 months old). He has serious separation anxiety. In desperation, I stuck him in a soft sided airplane pet carrier and stuck him beside me on the bed. Every night I pushed him a little farther from me, then started setting him on the floor beside me. After a little more than a week he is 1/2 way across the floor to where the other dog sleeps. He still has some whiney nights, but for the most part I get to sleep.
Mind you, dogs on beds may be an issue for most people(even inside a kennel or carrier).

How to run someone off
Posted: 1/24/2008 6:24:11 PM
If you figgure out the answer...let me know.
We have an unwelcome, all day every day guest. I can't tell him to get lost, he's related to the owner. Beloved boss man, the poop disturber, thinks it's funnier than hell that this guy gives us office people the creeps. The guy is harmless, just creepy, drinks all the coffee, eats all the food and makes a mess.
We only make 1/2 a pot of coffee at a time and have hid the coffee.
All cookies, chocolates, and other treats are hiding in the desks.
This isn't working.

Learning together.
Posted: 4/3/2007 6:21:59 PM
So very many things...
-That a 5 year old can drop the oil out of 2 trucks and a tractor with Grampa's wrong size wrench while Grampa digs around for the right size wrench.(oh well, they all needed an oil change eventually anyway)
-That a hot dog stuffed up the kitchen tap can quite effectively wash all the walls in the kitchen from the 3.5 foot mark down(and the floors too).
-How silly the dog looks wearing doll clothes.
-How much sand a shoe will hold and how big of a puddle a rubber boot will make when it's dumped out on the kitchen floor.
-Wonderful things can be accomplished with patience.
-That Grampa is terrified of snakes and salamanders.(all these years who knew...I think I'm the one who caused him to go bald so early...oops)
-The wonder in laying on a nice warm sidewalk watching the ants in their daily toils.
-Why the sky is blue and other important stuff(yes, they made me look it up).
-If you can get someone to tell you why there is a jam sandwich stuck to the wall...it was a science experiment for school, of course, naturally...why would it be anything else?

Haven't I met you somewhere before???
Posted: 2/5/2007 11:32:54 PM
I had the pleasure of working with my doppleganger for a few years a while back. It caused funny conversations where eventually someone would look all confused and say. "but, but, yesterday you said ....". Initiating new staff was always fun too...till the manager caught on. After that, new hires were introduced to us right away..."look closely, they don't really look that much alike. Don't let them play with your head." We were only 2 months apart, and born in 2 different hemisperes...but someone would always ask which one of our fathers was playing the field.

theme ideas for a house party
Posted: 2/5/2007 11:20:56 PM
One of my former co-workers was a bit of an airhead. She'd start to say something, and lose her train of thought 1/2 way through a sentence. Some smart ass would pipe up, "Ahhh, Martians zapped that one eh? musta been a gooder." For her birthday we all dressed up as Martians or wore tin foil hats and other various anti-death ray protection. We put green food coloring in all the food and drinks, someone brought a bag of lazer lights...this is where we discovered she believed she had once been abducted by aliens....sooo you might wanna check your guest list close for this one.

Accomplishments ?
Posted: 1/15/2007 8:04:34 PM
Way back a hundred years ago, I turned 24 and thought to myself, "OMG, I'm going to be 25 soon and life will be over! I better get my poop together!"
Boy, have I gone full speed in reverse since then!
I have not accomplished many of the financial or material goals that I had back then. I have managed to convince my Dad that he was right, when at age 26, he pronounced me: "Perfect! A perfect example of wasted potential!" and threw up his hands in exasperation and stomped away over my choice in jobs.
I didn't choose the highway paved in gold, there were hills, mountains, potholes, washed out bridges and landslides along the roads I've chosen. But, ohhhh the sights I've seen, the experiences I've had....I did it my way and it's been great and damn I've had fun!

Oh WDM I feel for you, I understand the frustration, as I have gone through it myself. I have 4 kids, all raised the same way, same rules etc....3 are excellent children/young adults and 1 breaks my heart each and everyday. I have no advice for you, I went through this in Alberta where the system is so twisted with red tape it cannot work properly. No idea of the resources here in BC. How do you deal with..
Posted: 10/25/2006 3:17:57 PM
Our house has had its go rounds with lies. Seems that what worked with child #1 doesn't work with child #2 and so on. The discipline with each one has had to be different, and sometimes evolves for each kid. But, the stress has always been: if you're bad we'll deal with it, but if you lie to me about it - you get double! If you lie to me once, I will not trust you for a very loooong time, you will have to prove yourself trustworthy again, and that can be very hard. How do you feel when people lie to you? Can you trust them next time? How do you think the other person feels? Will they trust you next time? etc.
Wish I had something helpfull-but I'm still looking for the same answers.

Things to do while visiting friends
Posted: 10/11/2006 7:34:01 PM
My darling brother has switched the hinges on my doors so that the hinges and door knobs are on the same side, Re-wired my broken light switch so that it turns the wrong light on and jimmied my taps so that the water comes out both tap and shower head.
#1 son(following his fav uncle's footsteps) switched the kitchen cupboard doors so they open the wrong way, put all my clocks on different times, and delights in putting everything he can get his hands on on the very top shelf then hiding my stool.

Unfortunately, sis-in-law and daughter-in-law frown on any revenge I might seek.

A Simple Question Really...
Posted: 9/12/2006 1:38:10 PM
I get that a lot too. I grew up on the farm, never saw the inside of an automatic until I'd already been driving for 3 years. Even in a rural area where everyone drives(no transit system) males always seem surprised(and maybe a little put out) that a female can drive a standard. Some even go as far as suggesting that a female who has higher than a class 5 license must be a lesbian or assexual.

The reverse is also true, most people assume that if a person is male then they are capable of driving a standard and are absolutely flabergasted when they find a male who does not drive at all.

The world has come a long way, but there are sooo many stereotypes that still prevail.

Ehhh...He would instantly lose his status as "The One" the second he tried to 'make' me change my ways.
Hubby was a total control freak, took me 3 years to get out and 10 years to rebuild what was left of me. I like what I've built, I've survived quite well this long doing things my way...it'll take a well thought out, carefully explained, and gently presented argument for me to consider changing(even something as small as my fav cereal or TP).

Changes
Posted: 8/31/2006 10:44:33 PM
Where I grew up, everybody knew everybody. If we did something in town even slightly wrong, the parents and grandparents all knew about it before we got home. These days does anybody know their neighbors phone numbers? Or which kids belong in what yards?
My great aunt seems to think that the world went downhill when they started building houses with patios in the back with privacy fences instead of front porches with rocking chairs and a swing. Then she adds in a forboding tone, "It takes a village to raise a child."

Anniversary’s - what do you do to make them special?
Posted: 8/22/2006 6:30:07 PM
I gave up on anniversaries...while married, my hubby never once remembered what day we got married. A couple years after the divorce, while discussing co-parenting issues with the ex and his new bride of 3 months, he says, "Hey, do you know what day it is? Do you remember what you and I were doing exactly 10 years ago tonight?(wink wink) It's our anniversary!!" As I coughed and gagged on my coffee, I managed to sputter out how impressed I was with his memory and tact(NOT)

People express love and affection in different ways. A person who speaks the 'gift' language and gives gifts to show affection may confuse someone who equates love and affection with time spent together. Or someone who works over time to ensure the people they love have everything they want taken care of will frustrate the heck out of someone who equates love and affection with verbal affirmations. Some people have trouble speaking more than one love 'language'.

Remember the old "see how many people you can fit in a volkswagon"?
Well, we're going to try to fit 4-6 tents, several vehicles and a 5th wheel in the cleared space at the family cabin near Vernon. It's about the size of most yards in town. The race for the one relatively flat tent spot starts tomorrow morning. Some of us are starting from central Alberta, some from the lower mainland, the ones that live in Vernon have graciously promised us a head start, lmao.

Bowling Alberta red neck style: on top of the hay stack, try to knock your siblings off the top by throwing hay bales at them.
Tag Alberta red neck style: chase your siblings out across the backs of dad's prize bulls while they're busy eating...don't touch the ground or suddenly the bulls are 'it' and it's every man for himself.
Running along the tops of the corrals got boring, so we graduated to barbed wire tight rope running.
It's no fun cultivating a nice smooth field..quick, put some nice deep ruts in it while dad aint looking, then get it all smoothed over before you get busted.(and don't forget to wash the truck after)
