I can't remember which name brand, it may have been {Select Comfort}, will give you a 30 or 90 day in home trial. I thought that was cool.

Strategies to avoid Holiday weight gain?
Posted: 11/24/2009 5:05:59 AM
{quote]If your strategy prior to the holidays was to eat sensibly and exercise and that has been working for you then I would suggest sticking with that plan.

Your right James this is the big part of how I lost the weight and I plan I continuing thru the Holidays. One of the things that has also help me loose weight is controling what goes into the shopping cart. If it dosn't go home it won't go into the mouth. Just at dinner the food will already be there. Then it will be up to common sense and control. Oh, and less of this:

Strategies to avoid Holiday weight gain?
Posted: 11/23/2009 5:33:33 AM
Ok, the Holidays are upon us and for many of us it is a time when we over indulge in our favorite foods. Then by December 31st we are making resolutions about our weight, lol. As I have recently lost 20lbs I do not want to backslide and have to re-loose the weight.

Well below are some of the things that I will attempt to actually try and do. Not brain science but if you don’t have a plan before hand and then consciously follow it you will likely over eat.

1) This Thanksgiving I am gonna eat a small snack about an hour or half hour before we sit down to supper.

2) I am gonna use a smaller plate, the dinner plates we have now are larger than the standard dinner plates of say thirty years ago. This will help in portion control.

3) Eat slowly. The temptation with all that food is to eat fast and get more. Slow down and enjoy the food.

4) Don’t go back for seconds.

5) Take a leisure stroll after diner.

6) Small slice of pie for desert.

So what are some of your strategies to avoid putting on the holiday pounds?

Not in the way that the pictures show. Those people packed on some serious pounds of muscle.

I beleive that you can make good strides in 4 weeks. A quote I once read in Men's Health was: "The fastest way to look like you put on 20lbs of muscle is to loose 10lbs of fat."

Barbell complex
Posted: 10/22/2009 8:29:36 AM
I have just come across the barbell complex, specifically the Javorek barbell complex 1-5, and I was just wondering how people were using it. This looks like it would be a killer for strength and endurance but is anyone using this specifically for cardio?

If so:

Are you doing this the same day as your resistance training?
As an Off day training?
More than 3 days a week.

Thanks.

Gym equipment ideas
Posted: 10/12/2009 7:00:55 PM
I love free weights, and if I had the room I would have a nice free weight gym, but there are house boats bigger than my house and I don't have a lot of room. So I bought a Schwin Bo Flex. I like the machine and if I had one regret it would be that I did not get the better machine. The higher cost one had more angles from which the weights could be pressed from. Plus a higher weight stack. Anyways the big plus for me is that the machine folds up and therefore has a smaller footprint. I still do free weights. I guess my one advice would be to buy a heavier load than what you think you need. That would be easier than upgrading later as I had to do.

From what I read about treadmills, the wider and the longer the belt the better. Don't remember why, cept that it had to do with the smothness of the exercise.

Good luck.

It is the Syracuse affliate and what they responded to my inquiry last year was that in the instances where they could choose, was their decision is base upon a belief that there is a stronger Buffalo Fan base in their broadcast area.

Steveemac, right, when ever there is a interconference game and the local CBS afflilate has the choice which game to air, they choose the Bills. They always do no matter what the teams records, who is in contention for playoffs etc. Back in the old days I would just tune the antenna rotor north and try to pick the game up out of Watertown as they generally played the giants. But I never got a digital set top converter as I have a satellite and where I live I would be luckly to pick up the digital broadcast.

No I don't beleive Dish Satellite has the football package and I wouldn't buy it for the two games a year that I miss because the local sports director is a bills fan.

Sun, Nov 8th is the next and last CBS game this year, Bills will be 1 -7 and still get aired.

Just wanted to rant a bit.

Once again the local CBS channel decided to play the Bufflo Bills game rather than the New York Giants. When ever the giants play an AFC opponet at home at the same time as a Bills game the local network ALWAYS plays the Bills game. I'm sure that if I were to email them that they would claim once again that area interest is higher for the Bills. But at this point of the season do even Bills fan care? I mean who would you rather see play, the now 5-0 Giants or the 1-4 Bill. I know the Bills game was close, they lost by a feild goal to Clevand,...Clevand!

But who Cares.

So I am mad, but should I be?

when to eat
Posted: 10/5/2009 7:32:02 PM
I think there are general rules that you can follow but that what works the best for you will be more tailored to your lifestyle, the foods you are eating and the type and intensity of your exercises. You may want to keep a journal of when you are eating, what you are eating, how much you are eating as compared to when you are exercising. Track the results and you will have your answer.

Over the years I have found that what works best for me is contrary to conventual thought.

I was asked this question and did not know the answer.

If you are thrown out trying to stretch a single into a double youare not awarded a hit?

What about a pitcher throwing a perfect game? Would the out at second still allow for the pitcher to be eligible for a perfect game?

Posted: 10/1/2009 1:12:33 PM
Polarbear,

You will have to determine the source of your cravings to nip the binge in the bud, whether it be a physical response to your diet or emotional response.

That being said, here is what I do. I drink a nice tall glass of cold milk helps keep my appetite under wraps. Take one, wait a half hour before eating and see if the hunger goes away.

It takes about 21 days to form a new habit so keep at it and good luck.

goals?

I’m trying to loose weight right now and I’ve recently lost 15 lbs. I’m not sure how much more that I need to loose but will go by the mirror and tape measure. I thought I would start trying to bulk up around Thanks Giving and take advantage of some of those extra calories. Then towards the end of Jan, beginning of Feb I would begin getting ready for the summer. Maybe 2010 will be the summer of a cut bod.

In body building you can isolate a body part but with weight loss, there is no such thing as targeted fat loss. Think of it as draining water from a pool, in order to get it out of the deep end you have to remove water from the whole pool. The same thing for fat loss. Maintain a healthy diet that allows you to drop a little weight each week.

Good luck

Just some advice
Posted: 9/17/2009 11:35:02 AM
If you just want to maintain than you may well be better served doing heavier weights for 7-10 reps and limit your sets. Isolation exercise are great for building biceps and triceps etc, but these muscles are connective, so basic exerise like the bench press and shoulder bress etc will also hit them. Really depends on your goal.

I'm sure you can get some real good advice here.

Good Luck

Lost 115 pounds so far
Posted: 9/17/2009 6:18:22 AM
Fantastic

Since July 20th I have lost 15 lbs, could have been more but there were a couple of family occasions that I allowed a little indulgence. I still need to loose 10 - 15 more pounds.

Mainly I have lost the weight by:

Starts at the grocery store, if it doesn't go in the cart it can't come home with ya!
Only eat when hungry
(drink plenty of water to make sure it's hunger and not thirst)
reduce portion size
count calories
I drink 48 oz of skim milk a day, four 16 oz servings a day. Love my milk.

I was lifting weights and bike riding for exercise but right now I am just cutting firewood.

It takes about three weeks to make these practices into a habit where you don't constantly have to think about it. In about the same time frame you will find that it takes less food to satisfy your hunger.

On portion size, when possible, put the food on the plate before cooking to see how much food you have. This will keep you from cooking too much.

Dinner plates used to be smaller than what is common today. I believe that the diameters of most plates today are 2" larger than what was common a generation ago. When buying your next set of dinnerware you may wish to look for smaller plates. This will reduce how much food you can get in a single serving.

Have a good attitude about it, this is a change in live style, not a punishment. Allow your self an OCCASIONAL treat with out guilt.

Try to loose weight like the tortoise not the hare and you should be good to win the race!

ROOT CANALS POSE HEALTH THREAT ??
Posted: 9/15/2009 5:05:12 PM
I have a cavitity in a molar, (it looked small in the Xray). What the dentist said is that it he does not know how much of the cavity would need to be removed and it could get into the nerve. At that point he would recommend a root cannal.

The thing is, I have only met two people that ever had more than one root canal.

Do Cellphones Cause Brain Tumors?
Posted: 9/14/2009 8:01:25 AM
I think the biggest threat too health from a cell phone usage is the people who use them while driving.

Cell phones are an RF Device used to transmit and receive RF (Radio Frequency).

The terms Radiates and radiation in regards to cell phone has to do with the RF pattern, levels and frequencies emanating, (radiating) from the cell phone.

The antennal transmit and receive in an Omni Directional, (all directions), pattern, which gives it the best chance to pick up a tower. The cellular bands are 824MHz – 849MHz and 869MHz – 894MHz, just above the old UHF TV Band ending at 806MHz (Channel 69).

Can RF cause harm? Yes, if exposed for long durations at high power.

The question at hand would be: Would usage of a cell phone provide high enough RF levels and exposure to cause damage at the cellular level?

I tend to doubt it, but that’s just my opinion.

I refer you back to my statement at the top of the post.

Is it ok to work out twice a day?
Posted: 9/2/2009 5:33:24 PM
There will always be different schools of thought on diet and exercise. Ultimately you will have to find what works best for you. Can you work out twice a day? Yes! Is it the best way for you to go? Dunno. Experiment and let your body be the guide. I know that I lost 12 lbs since July 20th. (I expected to have actually loose a bit more than that by now but I did have some family events, nuff said!) The way I lost the weight is unorthodox according to most people but it works for me. Perhaps the best thing that you can do is to keep a journal to track your activities, diet, how you feel and your progress.

Personnally, I do resistance three days a week, cardio two to three times a week and long walks nearly every day. I eat only when hungry and use portion size to reduce food intake. That's me!

Best of luck

Sore knee
Posted: 9/2/2009 4:02:15 PM
Obviously going to the doctor will be the best way to get an answer for your knee. I have injured both of my knees in my teen years, many, many years ago. I can cross my right leg over my left knee with out a problem. However, when I cross my left knee over my right leg I get a sharp pain in the knee. Like you said it is deep in the knee. I describe it like a long needle going through the knee. An old timer suggested it was arthritis. Dunno. It does act up with the weather changes and I also have problems in the knuckle of the right index finger. When I finally get to the docs again I will have to mention it to him

Getting lean, how do you loose weight with out loosing too much muscle?
Posted: 8/26/2009 9:45:05 AM
Just an update, I have lost 14 lbs since July 20th.

8lbs in the first two weeks. (Five of which was in the first week).
6lbs in the last three weeks.

This is with a couple of minor set backs, family gathering etc and over a week when I could not exercise.

Anyways, another 14lbs or so and I can better evaluate where to go from then.

Thanks for the input.

Not being 'needy' is a good thing, but just remember everyone needs to be needed. If you never call then its like saying that you aren't that interested in that person. Calling a man is not saying that you are needy, but that you are intrested. Calling them 100 times a day is a different story.

How much can you really transform your body in one month?
Posted: 7/31/2009 9:45:06 AM
This depends on your starting condition and what your goals are.

I read a quote that said:
“The fastest way to look like you put on 20lbs of muscle is to loose the last 10lbs of fat”.

Are you trying to loose weight?
Are you trying to put on muscles
Are you trying to do both.

Most people who are just trying to loose weight can drop up to 10 lbs in the first week of a diet as that has the greatest calorie deficit. After the first week you would need to eat less or exercise more to maintain that rate.

The second week expect to loose less, as the calorie deficit will be less.

If you are doing heavy lifting at the same time you are cutting calories your total loss may be less as you are putting muscle on at the same time as you loose fat.

For example, the last two weeks I work out heavy three days a week and started biking on the other days with cutting calories. Last week I lost 5lbs this week I have lost 2lbs.

Don’t get hung up on trying to do something in a month. Try to form new habits that will get you to your goals at a reasonable rate. I hear it take 21 days to form new habits so I would just recommend concentrating on forming good dieting and exercise habits and time will work out the rest.

Yup, was riding today when a big Black & Tan came charging the road. While the biscuit did not make the dog my friend it did decide it would not bite me, at least not today. After the biscuit it walked back to the house only slightly snarling.

I don't know about anything about all this fancy stuff. I just ride in the country wearing bluejean shorts tee shirt and most defin underware. I ride for an off day workout for my weight training. Right now I am doing a nine mile circuit with one massive up hill climb. Soon to expand circuit.

The one peice of advice I can give, especially if riding alone, carry dog biscuits.

Usally works to make them your friend.

Some advice please!
Posted: 7/28/2009 7:35:43 AM
If you are running a calorie deficit you should loose weight. If you run too big of a calorie deficit your body will think it is in starvation mode and will start consuming muscle to conserve fat.

Muscles weigh more than fat, so if you are losing inches but not weight it is likely that you have added muscles, have you seen your strength level go up? A tape measure and mirror are better tools than using scales.

As to your exercise, think of the body as a machine that lothes work. After a while it will learn to expend the least amount of energy to get through your routine. Change things up. If you are going to the gym, have one of the trainers assit you in breaking up your routine.

You may want to split the cardio and the resistance on different days for instance.

I'm sure you will get some better answers here, just hang in and good luck.

Getting lean, how do you loose weight with out loosing too much muscle?
Posted: 7/25/2009 7:33:37 AM
[quuote] If you want to get cut diet and run. If your not able to run for medical reasons then bike or swim.

Eventually I would like to get cut, but my very first goal is just to reduce the percentage of body fat.

The last time I did any real running was when I accidentally gave my older and much bigger brother a bloody noise. (The accident part being that I succeeded! )

I walk about 1-1/2 miles on my lunch ½ hour at work and bike and roller blade at home as these are easier on the knees and don't bother the bone spurs in the feet.

I know how to loose weight, because I have done it before. This is the first time that I was concern about minimizing muscle loss.

This last week I ate on purpose and avoided empty calorie snacks. I monitored calories to be sure to maintain a sleight deficit and did my normal MWF workouts.

From Monday morning July 20th to Saturday morning July 25th I dropped 5lbs.

I don’t know how much weight I need to loose, I will let the mirror and tape measure dictate that and not the scales. I expect at least another 15lbs or so before I can begin to think about cutting.

Thanks for all the info guys!

I have actually needed more calories to keep my fat loss going since doing more strength training...Also, I would doubt somebody taking 40 lbs. straight off anyway without building back muscle lost during the weight loss unless they like spinning their wheels....

Wouldn't you still need to run a calorie deficit to loose fat?

I know how I can cut 2,500 calories a week from my diet. Nail the snack drawer shut. However, I don’t think my coworkers would be pleased!

So far I have been able to stay out of it!

Some tidbits:

I read an article in Men’s Health magazine that said if you want to loose weight, then eat too the weight that you want to be. To paraphrase, if you weigh 220lbs and want to be 180lbs, then consume the amount of calories a day that would maintain a 180lb person and their lifestyle.

The nice thing about that is that you don’t have to keep adjusting your diet every time the weight loss stalls. By the time you drop 40lbs (in this example) you would be acclimated to that level of calorie intake.

I found this to be very logical and brilliant in its simplicity. However, the one glaring drawback to loosing weight this way is that you would also loose muscle mass.

I did read another article a long time ago that went through the process of how the body reacts to calorie deficits. How it tries to hang on to fat stores and would cannibalize muscle mass to do so. As Zarathustra00 said, their recommendations was much smaller calorie deficits, dropping your intake in steps to minimize muscle loss. They had some formulas to help target the amount of calories that you should be consuming to minimize loss.

I reckon that the first week with the largest calorie deficit I may loose 5-10 lbs; the second week about half that, and then a pound or two a week there on.

For now I think I will just stick to my normal lifting routine.

This post is long and I had other thoughts but I may post them latter.

If ya read this far you must really be bored.

Oh, and lean and green, ya lost me at no coffee

Getting lean, how do you loose weight with out loosing too much muscle?

Right now I am the strongest that I have ever been but the muscle is hidden by too much winter insulation. Time to get leaner.

Currently I lift three days a week but now my evenings are open till next September so I could split the routines if necessary.

Yesterday I rode the bike for the first time this summer, 9 miles under 45 minutes. One killer hill, ½ hour out and 15 minutes return trip. A little slower than last summer but not bad for the first time out.

As to lifting, any recommendations as to:

Percentage of max for each rep.
Number of reps in a set.
Number of sets for an exercise.
3 day over all routines or 6 day split routines.

For Cardio I ride bike, roller blade. & in the winter I shovel snow!

shoveling snow

Eew lots not rasie that supject!

Onetime when I was at the gym the trainer was telling a lady at the next station that doing lots of situps and crucnches will built the abdominal muscles up. If you don't loose the layer of fat you might actually look fatter because of the thicker core of muscles beneath the fat.

good luck.

[Quote]Closers this is the toughest because there were a lot of them-M.Rivera due to his post season preformance.

Should also add that it is the consistency over a very long time span. There are other that are great closers for a season or two, but it is a pretty exclusive club that do it for a career. That might be an interesting thread.

Records to big to break

Manny already has 20 grandslams.

If Manny breaks the grandslam record which seems highly likly would this record be tainted because of steroid use?

Records to big to break

Joe DiMaggio’s 56 game hit streak, Lou Gerhig’s 23 grandslams stand as records that seem so insurmountable people say they will never be broken.

What records do you think will never be broken?

Because I needed more characters in this post; what do you think should happen to the home run record?

Push TO the pain...not THROUGH it

There is a difference between pain during an exercise and soreness experinced the day after the exercise. I try not to push through pain during exercise. Pain is a symptom of something being wrong.

Sorness on the other hand can just be under used muscles finally getting worked.
