Ebay - To Hell In A HandBasket
Posted: 4/21/2009 7:25:06 AM
$8 US handling charge to put a camera lens filter in an envelope to mail it 15 miles ?
Stamp on the envelope was for $1.18 CDN.
I asked the seller if I could pick up and he/she said sure for an additional $ 5 handling fee. I've received similar sized stuff from Hong Kong for cheaper than that.
I'm guessing that people aren't getting the prices they want by auction so they're trying to make up for it in shipping and handling charges.

DRIVE INN MEMORIES?? ANYONE??
Posted: 11/10/2008 6:41:56 AM
Dusk to Dawns for $5 at the Barrie Triple Screen Drive In..ahh the memories... and yes..it was THAT long ago. We used to stop at the LCBO first and then grab a large pizza on the way and eat that there instead of the crappy overpriced consession stand stuff. Had to get the popcorn there though..that's like a rule or something.

Anyone else that went to the Barrie Drive in remember that ultra corny "Hey Son Of A Gun It's Refreshment Time" filler they used to play at intermission?

I guess the Statute Of Limitations is over on this one so I can tell you when I worked the 4-12 shift on a Friday and it was a nice night a few co workers and I would head up after work to catch the last part of the second bill. It was free because there was no one at the front gate after the second movie started.

The ability to correct spelling in other's profiles!
Posted: 11/10/2008 6:26:14 AM
I'm with Greeneyes on this one. Typos can be a distraction and they do happen to everyone at sometime but it's not the end of the earth. If you don't know how to spell the word but it's pretty easy to guess what's trying to be said, that's not a big deal either. Don't get me started on the "they're, their, there" fiasco.

That being said, if I had a stack of resumes to go through the ones with typos would be the first in the garbage. If you can't even get your resume right how good will the accuracy of your work be?

This is a dating site after all and the purpose of a profile is ( I'm guessing here) to give others a little glimpse of what the person behind the pictures is like. If you can't clearly convey your thoughts in a clear and easily understandable manner in either a profile or a forum post, then that is a definate liability when encouraging someone to contact you. If I have to reread something 3 or 4 times to try and figure out exactly what they are trying to say because there is no punctuation, capitalization, sentence structure or too damn many LOL's..then I start looking for the "next" button

New dog - questions
Posted: 3/16/2008 9:04:22 PM
There has been some excellent advice posted here already so I won't reiterate most of it. I did notice some omissions though:
1) Your dog should think that the best place to be is right by your side. To that end never ever hit your dog or call your dog to you for the purpose of correction. If you need to correct a behaviour, go to the dog.
2) When giving a command to your dog always say the dogs name first, then the command, then the praise/reward. For example, my dog's name is Logan, if I want him to sit the command is "Logan sit". When he obeys he gets rewarded everytime and you have to be consistent with this. If you are trying to teach the dog something new you should be extremely generous with the praise at first when it gets it right. You can scale it back later.
3) Start with the basics... sit, lie down, stay, come and heel. Worry about "tricks" later, try to make the learning sessions fun for the dog and try to end them on a happy note. Professional (search and rescue) handlers even go so far as to get someone to "pretend" to be a survivor for the dog to "find" if they were unsuccessful in their search.
4) An experienced dog owner can tell a happy bark from an angry or frightened bark. Dogs can read your tone of voice too so use that to your advantage. Give commands in a level even tone. Praise should be plentiful and in a "higher playful tone" and corrections should be a firm "NO" in a "lower growly" voice with direct eye contact.
5) Be consistent. Don't allow the dog on the couch/bed one day and not the next.

Not really a training note but just to make your life easier, get your dog used to you touching it all over. Occasionally look in it's ears, check it's teeth, touch its paws. If you want to, use a command (I use "let me see") when checking my dog. When I first got the dog I have now, he was about 2 years old and was very sensitive to having anyone touch his paws. It made trimming his nails and the fur between his pads a nightmare. Once your dog realizes that what you're doing doesn't hurt, leads to playtime and a treat after, makes grooming so much easier.

If you want some insight into dog behaviour look up "Dr. Stanley Coren". He has some excellent books on the subject.

Best of luck with your new best friend.

My newly adopted dog won't eat
Posted: 3/16/2008 7:46:34 PM
+1 to the "putting the food down for 10 minutes" concept. That alone can possibly reduce if not totally eliminate any "dominance" issues you may have down the road.
Also, when I first got my guy from the shelter he was on and off his food for the first month or so. He had a skin infection when I got him so when I took him back for a re check 2 weeks later he had put on a couple of pounds so he wasn't starving.

Which camera should I get?
Posted: 3/7/2008 5:47:31 AM
If you're looking for optical zoom then check out the Olympus SP550UZ.
My g/f wanted a new digicam for xmas so I did my researching then. The Olympus has an 18X (YES EIGHTEEN TIMES) optical zoom and can also shoot wide angle pics equal to a conventional 28 mm lens. It has image stablization and can shoot at 15 frames per sec. It features a large screen and step by step instructions when using the camera. It's actually on sale right now at Blacks for $269.99.
What a deal.

I must add to this collection:

PeOplE ThaT TypE LikE ThIs or feel compelled to substitute "z" for "s" eg. "boyz, noize,, cruize, etc". The made up word "chillaxing" also bugs the hell out of me.

When instructing someone on how to perform a calculation they say "you times it by" instead of "you multiply it by". When giving an example the person says "I. E." instead of "for example"

Why do you think men don't cry?
Posted: 12/27/2007 5:59:16 AM
Women cry.
Men cry.
The list of things that will cause a woman to cry is endless.
The list of things that will cause a man to cry is very short.
A woman will cry over a broken fingernail (seen it happen). A man will not,
A man may cry if his son and wife planned to get an old favorite muscle car rebuilt by the guys on tv (seen it). A woman wouldn't.
Why do women cry more than men?.....They simply have more reasons to.
Personally..the last time I cried....about 9 years ago when I had to make the decision to put my 13 year old Husky Shepherd down due to illness and of course being there while it happened.
Am I embarrased by it? Not in the least.

Congrats Mschar!
That's a big step and a wise investment in yourself and your financial future.
It wasn't that long ago that I moved into my first place all by my lonesome (long story don't ask). I'm sure that if you need advise/help on handyman type things just post in one of the fourms (Ask a Guy?) and hopefully someone will walk you through it. Failing that, just go to your local big box hardware store and seek out of the female associates for assistance. She can explain stuff in "woman speak" for you
Good luck!

Who's the funniest person of all time?
Posted: 10/9/2007 6:20:03 PM
Without a doubt Billy Connolly. Saw him at Massey Hall for the "Still Erect After 30 Years" show. I was sore for days from laughing so hard.
Second place to Robin Williams, he's a comic genius.
Honorable Mention in no particular order:
Bill Cosby, George Carlin, Dave Allan (At Large), The Two Ronnies, The Monty Python crew (special mention for John Cleese), Robert Schimmel, Steven Wright, The Smothers Brothers, Richard Pryor, Lenny Bruce, Redd Foxx, Flip Wilson, Russel Peters, Carol Burnett.

The old uncut Bugs Bunny Road Runner, Pink Panther cartoons. Has anyone else noticed the crap on TV on Saturday mornings now?
The Flintstones, Carol Burnett Show ( I still crack up at the outtake when Tim Conway went off on some tangent with the elephant impression making Vicki Lawrence cuss him causing Lyle Waggoner to fall off the couch)

BBQ sauce suggestions.(homemade)
Posted: 5/27/2007 5:22:26 AM
I had the steaks on the bbq and couldn't find any sauce so I was open to ideas.
I remembered reading in the paper about some unusual bbq sauces that involved using pop!
There was no measuring involved at the time so just pour and adjust until you get the desired consistency...
Use any type of sweet fizzy pop..Coke or 7up work best, ketchup, Worcestershire Sauce and salt/pepper or steak spice as desired.

I have passed this along to some other friends and they reported that adding a small amount of rum made this even better...something about the only pop they had was in someones rum and coke that they unknowingly donated to the cause...

Apparently, if you use the coke version it also makes a good marinade as the acid in the pop is supposed to be some sort of crude tenderizer

Skunks and Dogs Don't Mix
Posted: 5/10/2007 4:00:59 PM
You are going to get lots of disagreeing on this one. My dog (Long hair Collie/Shepard cross) has been sprayed three times...once in the back yard at 10:00 at night.
Tried various remedies including having him "Deskunked" at PetSmart....that was money wasted.
This is the method that worked best for me on my dog.
Treat the spray as if it was dirty motor oil..after all..the skunk spray is oily by nature. Rinse the dog off using water as warm as reasonably possible (I ran the garden hose from the laundry room sink) cold water will make matters worse. After a thorough rinsing prepare a spray bottle with 50% white vinegar and 50% hot water. The vinegar will cool off the hot water...but test it first to make sure it's not too hot!. Soak your dog with the water/vinegar mixture taking care to avoid the "sensitive areas" of your pet...obviously this method is NOT suitable if your dog got sprayed in the face. Two or more bottles may be necessary for larger/long haired dogs. Use caution if your dog wants to shake...vinegar in the eyes is nasty. Let the mixture soak in for 10-15 minutes and then rinse again with lots of warm water. Next, bath the dog with a good quality "grease cutting" type dish soap. The previous steps will take all the natural oils out of your dogs fur/skin so you now need use a good quality moisturing pet shampoo to replace them and prevent dry itchy skin from the vinegar.
Yes, it is a lot of work, but that's what worked best for me.

Thioughts/advice about getting motorcycle license/bike...
Posted: 4/6/2007 5:43:37 PM
I finally decided last year that I was going to get my motorcycle license and buy a motorcycle.

If you are seriously thinking about doing the same then the first thing you should do is go and buy the Motorcycle License handbook ($15 at Canadian Tire), study it and then take the M1 test. If you pass that, then book yourself in to one of the many fine Motorcycle Training courses (approx $350-400) available in the area. I attended the Rider Training Institute Course at Seneca College's King City campus and had a blast.

If you pass the test at the end of the course you basically have your M2 pending the 60 day time restriction. Now it's time to consider what type of bike you want. The courses give you the opportunity to try some different styles and brands of motorcycles and you are going to need at least an M2 to even consider test riding any motorcycle.

Insurance will be based on several things... your age, driving record, type of motorcycle and engine size. Cruiser style bikes tend to be cheaper to insure than sport types and the larger the engines the more you should expect to pay.

One last word of advice...when you go to look at a motorcycle with the intention of purchasing one then take someone with you who knows motorcycles to check it over for you.

It's not what you ride.....it's that you ride.

Massive Pet Food Recall
Posted: 3/18/2007 4:38:15 AM
Just saw this in the online edition of the Toronto Sun this morning
http://www.torontosun.com/News/World/2007/03/18/3775858-sun.html

UNION, N.J. -- Pet owners are worried that the kibble in their cupboard may be deadly after the recall of millions of containers of dog and cat food sold at major retailers across North America.

Menu Foods, the Mississauga-based company that produced the pet food, said yesterday it was recalling dog food sold under 46 brands and cat food sold under 37 brands including Iams, Nutro and Eukanuba. The food was distributed throughout the U.S., Canada and Mexico by major retailers such as Wal-Mart, Kroger and Safeway.

An unknown number of cats and dogs had suffered kidney failure and about 10 died after eating the affected pet food, the company said. The recall covers the company's "cuts and gravy" style food, which consists of chunks of meat in gravy, sold in cans and small foil pouches from Dec. 3 to March 6.

A detailed list of the affected product can be found at http://menufoods.com/recall/

For current TV shows the only ones I make time to watch are South Park and Family Guy.

For past shows....X Files (up until they brought in Robert Patrick), WKRP in Cincinnati ....best line ever...."as god as my witness I thought turkeys could fly", Soap, The Pink Panther and the good old "Bugs Bunny Roadrunner Hour" before they edited out the "violent stuff"

After many years of wanting a motorcycle I finally got my motorcycle license (M1) last August. Since then the longest trip I've been on was from Aurora to Niagra Falls on my first group ride. They went way faster than I was expecting. I was bored one day and drove around Lake Sincoe just for somewhere to go.

Funny movie lines
Posted: 5/17/2006 6:47:25 AM
Wayyy too many funny lines in the Airplane series to mention but if you liked them check out Top Secret which was also done by the same guys that did Airplane.

Nick and Hillary are sitting in the restaraunt and they discover that the menu is in German..Hillary says.."don't worry..I know a little german.....there he is" (cue the midget in leiderhosen)

At the end of the mission when the woman is saying goodbye to her fellow french resistance members..she says to the last one..."and I will miss you most of all scarecrow" and hugs the scarecrow from the Wizard of Oz"

Nick talking to the blind informant who sells Novelties and Party Tricks..."here..you dropped your phony dog poo" and hands it to him...the informant says " I don't have any phony dog poo"

Nick : Hillary. That's an unusual name.
Hillary : It's a German name. It means "she whose bosoms defy gravity"
Nick : I'm pleased to meet you. My name's Nick.
Hillary: Nick? What does that mean?
Nick : Oh, nothing. My dad thought of it while he was shaving.

wireless internet
Posted: 5/12/2006 7:50:43 AM
I'm also running wireless here (as an aside if anyone in the future is considering purchsing a wireless router avoid DLink products like the plague).

1) are you are running a firewall? If not, why not? there are several free ones out there (Sygate, Zone Alarm) that will suffice. Windows XP firewall is about as effective as "mall security" at a biker convention so even if you have that you might want to consider them.

2) see above...if you have any concerns about your computers vunerability just google "shields up" and run the free test there

3) In addidtion to setting up the WEP/WPA encryption you can, or should be able to, set up MAC address filtering. The Wireless MAC Filters feature allows you to control which wireless-equipped PCs may or may not communicate with the Router depending on their MAC addresses. In other words, unless you enter the MAC address of the computer in the routers permit settings it will not be permitted to access the router.

One word of advice...when setting up the router make sure you do it through a computer that is HARD WIRED to the router.

If you need any other help give me a shout and I will try to walk you through it.

That's the switch / lever that shuts down the mower when you let go of it. Didn't see anyone else mention it and seeing as how its a new mower you shouldnt be having too many problems with it yet

does anyone get as turned off with a smoker as i do?
Posted: 2/23/2006 5:53:00 AM
Hmmmmm...interesting conversation....let's turn it up a notch or two.

What if.....you met the person of your dreams...and he /she was an occasional (emphasis on the "OCCASIONAL" part) smoker and you didn't find out until you were a couple of years into the relationship. Lets get past the "I would know he/she smokes bla bla bla crap" for the purpose of this little scenario.
The question remains...what would you do????

Just for the record...I am a non smoker and yes seeing a woman smoking is a huge turnoff...even more than a woman that has tatoo(s)...now there's another topic to be discussed
