The Silent Treatment
Posted: 11/19/2009 5:02:56 PM
Trying to " discuss" things with people when they are not ready or not interested in excessive details, speculation etc is also a form of aggression and equally "unhelpful' as the silent treatment.

Lets discuss something is often used by proponents to mean I am going to impose something on you, or the opening gambit in a confrontation.

It isn't quite as simple as some people would have you believe.

Richard Dawkins fans?
Posted: 11/19/2009 3:57:13 PM
Great guy.
There is of course a difference from revering someone (or allying yourself with what you believe they believe) and worshiping them !

Why do theists get so upset when an atheist questions the scientific basis of their beliefs and simply says "where is your evidence ?'

Dawkins defends peoples right to believe what they want, even though he clearly thinks people who don't base their beliefs on scientifically derived evidence are deluded at best.

We are hard wired to find all this stuff atteactive and believeable on some level.

It is a shame that despite his obvious intellect (and the good stuff hes come up with) he has allowed himself to stray so far off the scientific method and accepts so much thats science fiction.

Virgin Broadband
Posted: 11/19/2009 3:28:48 PM
I got banned from Virgin media Internet, then cancelled the rest of my services wit h them. I was spending over 1k a year with them at the time.

I allegedly rang a voice mail for their internet security team and told the guy whose name appeared on the bottom of an insulting letter they sent to me to go f$$K himself !

VM are fine if you don't mind your ISP policing your email, throttling the bandwidth you paid them, or charging you more cash than new customers etc.

OP..you just have to keep on at them. head office staff are often more obliging when customer services are fobbing you off.

Apart From Metal.
Posted: 11/2/2009 7:59:17 AM
Well said.

I would personally add that a lot of the people drawn to musical extremes, particularly in their teenage years are often trying too hard to be different, self loathing or it simply isnt about the music its about the look and the scene.

A lot of these hard forms are about shocking people and stickng 2 fingers up to the establishment. They may be seen as overtly negative rather than representing a positive (abeit just as likely to be naive etc etc) outlook thast say mainstream pop or less hardcore genres suggest.

For me making yourself ugly and listening to music that most find ugly is the issue here far more than anything else. A lot of people will ask why you are drawn to that.

Plenty of rational (if less exciting) explanations for these sorts of things...

To understand the human propensity for spirituality or religion you need only understand the psychology of the Big Mac Meal.

there is many an atheist thats had a conversion and vis a versa ....proves nothing really, other than the fact it happens.

I think there is nothing wrong in having a preference but in my experience it is all too easy for people to pitch up with some romantic fantasy in their head or a huge chip on their shoulder.

As long as you fall somewhere imbetween, are true to yourself and honest with the other person you are probably doing the right thing.

You cant really beat yourself up when other people are off the mark in terms of their behaviour or expectations and you should expect to meet plenty of people like that that will have you questioning your own standards.

People who get in your head
Posted: 7/3/2009 7:36:56 AM
She also loved wrecking guys heads.

If you are given torture/interrogation training it is very hard to have your head wrecked by someone.

in relationships we have to take responsibility for out own thoughts and "head" not blame other people who will most likely be on their own agenda, and deliberately or otherwise, be trying to "mess" with our heads.

Very few people are capable of deliberately messing with someones head . You need drugs and a lot of training to do it, time or a very special set of circumstances AND the right subject.

Most people are just being themselves and head wrecking is an unintentional side effect that other people use as an excuse for their own lack of self awareness/control.

Good judge of character?
Posted: 7/3/2009 7:32:53 AM
To be a relatively good judge of character you need to have gained a lot of experience of different people from all over the world and from different backgrounds.

You then need the mental capacity to be able to process lots of information about people and the way humans behave.

You need to be able to ask and take advice becasue you may not be looking at a person objectively becasue you have an alterior motive to view them, their behaviour in a certain way.

Ergo ...most people are very poor judges of character even though they think they are good judges of character..

You have no hope in hell in judging someones character to any significant degree of asurity using a profile or a few dates...

One thing i look at is peoples ability to cope with stress or things outside their comfort zone.. we all know most people have apublic and a private face. the voice changes they become relatively polite and express middle of the road or uncontroversial views etc..

This is caused by one half of the brain working a split second before the other and happens more in young people when the brain is still developing.

Sorry but you did not have past lives !

And because women think on 2 sides of their brain versus men one, women may experience it more than men...

Then again we are apparently riding a piece of rock going round the sun so........

where a girl works...
Posted: 7/2/2009 11:12:07 AM
Yes and no...

You can find a lot of people that are not academic types are intimidated by people that are, and academic types that think anyone with a degree is as boring and shocked by the sight of an erect penis as they are, but it doesn't do to make assumptions about people based on their "job"

People that are constantly wanting to study just for the sake of it are not very appealing. Someone that has no work history (without good reason) is not appealing. But that is just me..

Revenge is good if she cheated on you and you can honestly say it wasn't something un reasonabnble you did.

Just make it amusing and move on immediately.

Alternatively forget and move on..

Trust me 2 years is nothing people cheat and deceive for years and ultimately someone who cheats is just showing their personality flaws...they are not going to change whatever relationship they get into (at best they will suppress them)

Don't let these sorts of experiences make you bitter..learn something about yourself and go find someone that deserves you - and spoil them..

How Do Kids Take To A Parent Dating Again?
Posted: 7/2/2009 4:19:32 AM
Don't go too easy on children misbehaving over new relationships.

Once they have been afforded sensitivity and had the situation explained fully to them in terms they are old enough to understand it is time to lead by example.

Paying too much attention to their every whine and objection or overlooking bad behaviours is not going to help them or you.

Children are very adaptable.

Can This Work?
Posted: 7/2/2009 4:05:19 AM
I'm not sure how the kids dont work as your child is 3....can't really be any significant issues between the kids here.

The kids behaviour is fairly standard fair (although understanding their behaviour and accepting it are not the same thing).

You seem to have made your mind up his kids are not worth the effort...not a good sign of some of your thought processes and willing to parent really.

Strictly speaking yes you and your B/f could have a relationship (of sorts) that has nothing to do with the kids although somehow I rather suspect you won't be farming your child off every time you want to see him.

I would have thought the getting to know you phase should include understanding his perspective as to why his marriage ended....we are all creatures of habit...

if you haven't got to know that it begs the question what else of importance you haven't got to know about each other that might help in understanding what is going on here..
