For something really radical - Toast :19:

For me its Cheese Toast. Thinly sliced sharp cheddar cheese on top of white or wheat bread, placed either in a toaster oven or a broiler until the cheese is melted and bubbly. Something my Momma passed down.

Starbucks goes Instant
Posted:
10/1/2009 7:39:21 AM
Ok, I'll say it. I LIKE Starbucks. Yes, the fancy coffee drinks are overpriced (they recently went up also). But, I don't smoke. I don't drink alcohol. This is my splurge. I usually get a Grande Nonfat No-Whip Mocha a couple of times a week. I haven't tried the Via Instant (not a big fan of instant either). They tried to give me a sample yesterday, and I'm sure anyone could get one if they wanted to try it. I believe that I read somewhere on line they were actually doing that one day this week.

Sweet potatoes and ????????
Posted:

Sweet Potatoes! Yum! Sometimes I bake them like regular potatoes and eat it with butter and sugar! I had one at Texas Roadhouse that was "loaded" with butter, marshmallows and drizzled with caramel! OMG! To die for! Sweet Potato pie is always a winner. And during the holidays I make Candied Sweet Potatoes with marshmallows!

Do women cook anymore??
Posted:
8/16/2009 7:43:19 PM
I cook. And even though I was raised by a stay-at-home-Mom, I still had to teach myself. I have two girls and my oldest can cook just as good if not better than me. The youngest (only 22) didn't learn while she was at home and decided last year that she might ought to learn how. Needless to say we spend quite a few nights on the phone (long distance) talking our way through a new recipe. But I have discovered that since the youngest started learning how, most of her friends can't cook and leave it "up to her".

Does your ex still calls you?
Posted:
8/12/2009 12:20:23 PM
I have an ex-husband who had called me from time to time over the years (we've been divorced for over 20 years). He was suddenly calling me almost daily a few months back. I thought it was a little odd that he was suddenly calling so often until he made a vulgar remark to me during the last phone call. I blew it off and simply stopped answering the phone after that. While he wasn't "getting married" he is living with someone. I can only assume he thought we were going to have a fling. He thought wrong. Sounds like this gal is attempting the same thing with you.

The Five Minute Date
Posted:
7/31/2009 10:05:39 AM
I think I would have at least downed the entire beer before walking out.
I can beat the 5 minute date. I was suppose to meet this guy at a nearby Starbucks. When I arrived, I looked around and didn't see him anywhere. So, I ordered my drink, paid for it, and proceeded to wait. The place was fairly busy (Saturday morning). While waiting, he came out of the restroom, walked over the counter, ordered a drink (whatever it was they gave it to him right at the register), paid and turned around. He walked about 10 feet when he turned around, looked straight at me, shook his head from side to side in one of these "No, I can't believe this" head shakes and proceeded to walk out without saying one single word to me. Apparently he wasn't happy with what he saw despite the fact I keep recent pictures posted and look exactly like them. Oh well...better luck next time. You never know what you're going to get until you get there.

My last husband used to call me Momma. That annoys me. I am not his Momma. He has one. Call HER Momma. I have a name. Use it.

Chocolate frosting, how do you make it.
Posted:
7/24/2009 2:28:07 PM
How to Make Chocolate Frosting With Cocoa
* 2 cup powdered sugar
* 1 tsp. vanilla
* 1/4 cup soft butter or butter substitute
* A few tablespoons of milk or milk substitute (i.e. soy milk, rice milk, or nut milk)
* 1/4 cup raw cocoa
Step One
Mix powdered sugar and cocoa in a bowl together. Make sure that there are no lumps in the cocoa or the sugar; use a sifter if needed, or just pulverize any lumps with the back of a spoon.
Step Two
Take the softened butter or butter substitute, the milk or milk substitute, and the vanilla and slowly add the liquids, mixing the frosting with a hand mixer. If the milk is too cold, it may make the butter clump. Be sure to mix the frosting on medium speed until it is the right consistency and until there are no lumps.
Step Three
Thicken chocolate frosting that is too thin by adding some extra powdered sugar or extra cocoa.
Step Four
Thin out chocolate frosting that is too thick by adding extra milk, substitute milk or vanilla. Do not add extra butter; this will make the chocolate frosting too greasy.
Step Five
Add flavoring items to the cocoa chocolate frosting if you wish. Such items include chopped maraschino cherries, chocolate chips, butterscotch chips, peanut butter swirls, or fresh fruit. Do not use a mixer to add these items. Mix in with a basic spoon or spatula.
Step Six
Spread on your prepared, cooled cake and serve.

This reminds me of that crocodile dundee movie where he's in a bar and a "Woman" comes up next to him flirting. His buddies tell him its a guy, and he literally feels the guy up and announces to everyone in the bar 'its a guy'.....

Regret what you've done, or haven't done

I don't believe a person should regret anything they've done. After all, it seemed like a good idea at the time (unless of course it was illegal).

Calcium absorption
Posted:
7/15/2009 7:17:14 PM
What you're doing sounds right. I have osteopenia and have to watch my calcium levels. I was taking 1200 twice daily until the doctor told me my body would only absorb half that and the rest would go to waste. He also said that the type of calcium that Caltrate is made out of, I believe its calcium carbonate, is easier for the body to absorb.

Calcium absorption
Posted:

I take Caltrate brand Calcium, 600 mg plus Vit D. My doctor told me to only take one at a time because that was the most a body could absorb at one time. If you're wanting to take 1200 mg daily, I would take half in the morning and half in the evening.

Daily Beer Drinking
Posted:
7/11/2009 5:06:41 AM
jlc, you made a lot of dumb decisions, like have 5 children with a known alcoholic. Then you blame him for everything. What about you?
Actually, I didn't have any children with him. I had 3 children from a previous marriage. He had 2 children from a previous marriage that he had custody of. Their Mom was seldom around. So we had 5 between us. Dumb decisions? yeah, sure, we all make them. I wasn't aware that he had a drinking problem when I married him. He hid it well. I'd have left him sooner but it was rather difficult considering we were a military family and always moving around and far from "home".

Daily Beer Drinking
Posted:

Wow, I can't believe there is 7 pages of responses on this thread. I was married to a functional alcoholic. When we first married, he drank a 6 pk a day after work (he was in the Air Force). After 12 years of marriage, it was a 12 pack on a work night and at least a case a day on weekends. While he wasn't violent, he was mean mouthed and a real jerk (especially to my son). He's a terrible father, and while he was (and still is) a good provider he's a lousy husband. I had to run the entire household alone AND take care of 5 kids. The most he would do is mow the lawn occasionally and become this hard-aXXed disciplinarian. The children and I walked around on egg shells most of the time. Today he's over 50, alone, and has become this "workaholic-alcoholic". I, personally, would prefer a guy who comes home from work and sits down to a big ol glass of iced tea than a beer.

Who Would Be Happy As A Homemaker?
Posted:
7/5/2009 5:44:24 PM
I was married to a military man for quite a few years and I did that. We had 5 kids at home between the two of us. At one point, he was overseas for 10 months and left me home alone with the kids. Was I happy? Yes, at the time, I thought I was....until I found out he was running around on me. Not tooting my own horn here, but it does take a very special kind of woman to stay home and take care of the house, kids, etc., etc., while the hub is away all the time. Not all women can, or want to do this.

Can Anyone Relate to Dating a Woman who is Bi-Polar?
Posted:
7/5/2009 10:25:53 AM
Thanks LakeCountyGal for such an inciteful post. I agree that you shouldn't lump all BiPolar people into one catagory. Every individual is different and the disease effects them all differently. My son was diagnosed with BiPolar 2 Disorder a few years ago after being treated for ADHD all of his life. He's now 21, and unmedicated. He does not like how the medication makes him feel. He does have a problem holding down a job, and he is a little immature for his age (I'm not sure this is BiPolar related though...lol). His "episodes" do not happen as often as they used to. He has learned how to control some of the milder rage episodes but usually calls me on the phone when has a bad one. I don't think he's difficult to be around or live with. You simply have to get to know him and know what he's like when he's having one and what to say and do until it passes. He will range from a total "Up rage episode" to a "Down- sad, depressing-I want to die- episode" all at one sitting. He has a great personality and has absolutely no problem making or keeping friends and all the girls seem to like him. I can understand people not wanting to get involved with someone with this disease. But if find someone you like with it, please educate yourself and get to know the person before you make judgement.

Conflicting interests
Posted:
6/26/2009 7:34:53 AM
I believe you need to have some type of common interests but not all of them. Unfortunately my last ex and I had absolutely nothing in common. He liked vanilla, I like chocolate. He prefers country music, I like rock. We were as different as night and day and for the life of me I don't know what the attraction was. It certainly wasn't sex.

Lower Cal Oatmeal Cookie
Posted:
6/9/2009 7:53:15 AM
OP, if you have a crockpot try this one. The flavor is like a great big oatmeal cookie. I make it on a regular basis. After it cools, I scoop it out and store it in a ziplock bag.
Crockpot baked oatmeal recipe
--3 cups rolled (not instant) oats (if gluten free, make sure they are certified)
--1/2 cup brown sugar-(you can use the Splenda brown sugar if you want)
--2 tsp cinnamon
--2 tsp baking powder
--1 tsp salt
--1 cup milk
--2 eggs
--2 tsp vanilla
--1/4 cup butter, melted (or you could substitute applesauce for this)
--3/4 cup dried fruit ( I used dates but any kind will do)
Mix all the ingredients together in the crockpot. I dumped in all the dry stuff, and then added the melted butter and milk. Stir well with a spoon---make sure the baking powder gets dispersed evenly.
Cover and cook on low for 3-5 hours, checking every so often. This is done when the edges are brown and are beginning to crust, and the center is set. An inserted knife should come out clean. You're baking this, but no need to vent the lid of the crock; keep all the moisture in. It took 4 3/4 on low for me----so unless you hardly sleep, do this in the day time so you can keep an eye on it.
Let it sit in the cooling crockpot for at least an hour before attempting to cut. The longer you let it sit, the more set and brownie-like the pieces will be.

Does anyone else have phone fright?
Posted:
6/7/2009 5:23:52 AM
I actually have a version of this. I've had it since I was a child. It used to make my Daddy angry. He's say, "Its only the telephone. They aren't going to bite you!". Any time I have to call someone I don't know, regardless of who it is or what I'm calling about, I have to sit and rehearse to myself exactly what I am going to say. Over and over again. Sometimes I make notes. Sometimes it takes me days to call someone. Its escalated over the years into my personable life. Now, not only do I have the telephone anxiety, I have a generalized anxiety disorder and a mild form of agoraphobia .

What's your favorite secret ingredient?
Posted:
4/25/2009 3:58:38 PM
It would depend on what I'm cooking. I use Worcestershire sauce in marinades for beef alot.
I add semi-sweet chocolate chips to brownie mixes and always take them out of the oven a little ahead of the "scheduled time" so they are gooier.
I "sugar" the pan instead of using flour or cocoa on certain cakes I bake. It makes a nice, sweet crust and no frosting is needed.
When I make cheese enchiladas, I use the green chile enchilada sauce, instead of red sauce or chili sauce.
