Any Bengals fans out there??

Yes there were a lot of Bengals fans at the Baltimore game. Didn't you see them? They were all wearing striped shirts.
I'm not sure how many other penalties were called, but the last two that I did see were legit--at least as far as a flag being thrown. Ray Lewis led with his helmet on a defenseless receiver. After Boldin that will get called everytime, especially if Chad's helmet pops off the way it did. I don't care how overthrown that ball is.
The pass interference call should have been defensive holding, as the bump and run coverage went at least 10 yards deep and the defender wouldn't let Chad cut into his route, but either way it's still a penalty that moves the chains.
I understand your frustration, though, especially after the gift-wrapped penalties in Foxboro.

Book false starts

I slog my way through, personally.
I once overheard someone at the local library give this tip to a patron: "Read up to your age." (meaning if you're 42, read 42 pages to decide whether the book is worth finishing or not)
If you want to read it all, build up a routine like you would anything else. Read 10 pages a night, every night. If you can read more, do that.

That's terribly, terribly, disturbing. :)
The only things I shall change when telling people this joke is:
A seven year old son overheard someone call Tom Brady a pus$y one Sunday after he played the Ravens. So he decided to ask his dad, "Dad, what does a pus$y look like?" The Dad confused, asks him: "Before or after sex?" The kid says "Ummm before sex." So the dad says to him: "Well have u ever seen a beautiful red rose with soft red petals?" "Yeah," says the son. "What about after sex?" he says to his dad. His dad replies: "Have you ever seen a bulldog eating mayonnaise !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
Maybe I'll throw in: "But which one does Tom Brady look like?" and the dad can reply with something like, "Before or after he played the Ravens?" haha

^^I agree with what you're saying, but not when the quarterback gets whiffed and goes crazy looking for the flag while other qbs (David Garrard) get piledriven and get no flag, and then that same qb basically gloats in the press conference after the game that the other team better not try to tackle him or else they'll get flagged.

Good work out songs?

Anything off the rocky soundtracks. Songs like "hearts on fire", "training montage", "going the distance", "final fight", "no easy way out", and everyones favorite: "eye of the tiger"
Yessir. Even the songs intended for Rocky but ended up elsewhere ("You're the Best" on the Karate Kid soundtrack for example) are great to work out to.
Bon Jovi's "Livin' On a Prayer" was a staple in my high school weight lifting room.

remembering song lyrics
Posted:
10/7/2009 4:59:46 AM
Teachers and professors have always said that if you sing your notes while you're studying, you'll remember them better during the test. I think it might have something to do with the melody, rather than what the actual lyrics are.
I remember Steven Tyler basically saying he can at least hum the melody if he forgets the words when criticizing either Joe or Brad for forgetting the chords to a song.
Also, with the fans singing along to every song, all a singer needs to do is turn the mic out to the crowd if they happen to forget something.

I hope Stafford has a full and quick recovery. Didn't hear about Johnson's injury, but I assume and hope it wasn't as serious. Injuries suck unless you're name ends in Om Brady and you have a million new rules enacted just so you don't get tackled ever again.

The fact that Tom Brady got two roughing the passer penalties against him when there were other blatant hits on quarterbacks this weekend that didn't get called is disgusting, and shows the favoritism directed towards Tom Brady.
David Garrard got lifted off his feet and piledrived and there was no call! (there will be a fine, I'm sure)
People compare Brady to Montana for his composure, but Montana took a lot of rough hits (two against the Giants that nearly ended his career) and never acted like such a priss for getting his thigh brushed by a guy trying to avoid him. I don't ever remember Montana having to curse off his o-line to protect him better, either.
(while I'm on the subject, Montana was also mobile

I have a feeling this thread is just for bands, but the first thing I thought of when I saw the title was the shakuhachi. I can listen to that for hours.
I also love the Castlevania: Symphony of the Night music by Michiru Yamane, and the cover of bloody tears by Naoto Shibata on Perfect Selection: Dracula Battle.

Celebrating Angels A Sobering Reality?
Posted:

Pouring champagne, celebrating after winning your division is a baseball tradition.
It's not a tradition if they're pouring it on a player's jersey that was killed by a drunk driver......
I think the people who have the biggest complaints about this are those who don't follow baseball and don't know the tradition.
The best part of all this is that the video and most reports don't mention the teammates in front of his locker with their heads bowed in prayer.

C.D. vs Vinyl....

"Sterile" is a good word, International velvet.
I've heard many recent criticisms over the "mastering" done on some CDs. I don't mean re-mastering, but brand new albums from 2009 (not all, but some). One said that if this is the sound quality CD manufacturors are going to provide, kids will start to think that mp3s sound great, giving them more reason to download internet bootlegs instead of buying CDs.
As for a larger memory content/capability (
) I have the Willow soundtrack on vinyl, and that's over an hour long (on both sides, of course).

I always remember hearing that vinyl has a more dynamic sound range than CDs do. Something about the sound waves or frequencies it can produce as opposed to CDs.
There's just something about listening to a record that makes me want to turn up the volume really loud ... and when I do, I can feel the music humming. To me, CDs just get loud. (I also like the snap, crackle, pop on occasion)

Name the artist you feel was the most influential in the birth of Rock Roll

Thanks for updating me, International velvet.
I had visions of people nominating Nirvana and Coldplay, nevermind Elvis and the Beatles, so I went to the last page and had my fears confirmed by a (hopefully joking) mention of Jim Morrison.
I also like Screamin' Jay Hawkins, but he came a little after Ike. Still, his vocal style and performance were pretty revolutionary, and his influence can be seen in Glam Rock, Grunge, and other genres. I agree with the choice of Berry, too.
Now that I think about it, isn't Robert Johnson often credited with this? I'm assuming he's been mentioned previously.

Classic rockers Queen + Paul Rodgers unite and tour.

I've listened to their CD, and it's not bad, but like one poster said, it's just not Queen. I don't fault Brian May and Roger Taylor for wanting to keep playing and touring (they're great musicians and should play as long as they want) but I sort of took John Deacon's stance on this. Without Deacon, let alone Freddie, I'm not sure if they're entitled to even still call themselves "Queen," but that's a minor issue for me.

Poor Bills ... Tom Brady will get full credit for yet another comeback win, though they should have never been in position for one. That loss is an absolute killer, especially in Foxboro. The Bengals loss is somewhat easier to swallow, as it was such a freak play.
BTW, the Patriots old-school jerseys are far better than their current ones.

Brett Favre to Retire
Posted:
9/7/2009 4:27:25 AM
but the cheap shot I don't think was totally intentional (his face afterwards looked pretty sheepish and embarrassed, not gloating or sly), and I'd bet he'd apologize to the guy. He plays hard usually, not dirty.
haha, like he was going to get up, smack the sides of his open hands against his thighs, and scream, "Suck it!" at the safety while he's writhing in pain?
Favre's stupid for this hit, but he's not that stupid. Of course he's going to look like, "Oh, did I do that? Oops. I was just trying to block." Wily old vet doesn't refer solely to a player's legal plays.

This is inexcusable, at any time, let alone a meaningless preseason game! All he needed to do was put his body in front of him! Tip a shoulder, and he would have decleated him! Why the Hell dive for his feet?

Your Favorite Music Lyrics
Posted:
8/24/2009 6:16:05 PM
You'll be haunted by her face, missing her warm embrace.
Memories of loving her, holding her tight, every night.
Was that the best part of your life?
Hearing her voice, soft and low, begging you to please, please don't go ...
Don't go ... now ... Don't go! Don't Go!
Late last night I had a dream, and she was in it again,
She and I were in the sky, flying hand in hand.
I woke up in a cold sweat, wishing she was by my side,
Praying that she'd dry the tears, left on my face I've cried.
Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, dancing on a Friday night!
Let the music smother me, whole weekend recover,
Dancing on a Friday night!
I can see the lady I adore, dancing on the dancing floor,
Dancing on a Friday night!
And god the way she moves, moves me, to write bad poetry,
Dancing on a Friday night!
We made mad love, shadowed love, random love, and abandoned love,
Accidentally like a martyr ...
The hurt gets worse ... and the heart gets harder.

Is it because poems are more "love stuff" than "fun stuff"? I would consider them to be part of the same category--though I might have just answered my own question, as poems are often "love stuff".

NOT Writing is Worse.
Posted:

I remember hearing that Jerry Juhl, writer for the Muppet Show, Muppet Movies, and Fraggle Rock, had this saying on a plaque on his writing desk. I loved the advice so much that I created a desktop background with the phrase, to combat any writer's block I might encounter, or any bouts of truly terrible writing I might find myself disgusted with.
For me, it's the truest concept a writer could approach writing with.
Any thoughts or similar quotes that keep you inspired and writing?

What are you reading this summer?
Posted:
8/24/2009 6:29:52 AM
There's actually a thread like this in the art/music section--go figure--though it should probably belong here (just like the poetry/quotes section
). I think your question brings more depth to the discussion, however, rather than just random lists.
So ...
lots of fantasy. Trying to finish up the WOT series, finally read Crossroads of Twilight and Knife of Dreams, both of which are inspiring in their own way. Just finished The Summer Palace, which wasn't inspiring, but a lighter change-up from the bulky WOT books. Just started The Thousandfold Thought, which is good but too philosophical for me sometimes. I'll probably finish up the summer with the WOT prologue, New Spring.
Other than fantasy, I've also read Rita Haworth and the Shawshank Redemption and The Body from Different Seasons, both of which were just as good as the movies and just as inspiring. But then, I can relate to most of what Stephen King writes. :)

Through rose-colored glasses.
Similarly, Italians would describe having a good day or being content or just being happy as "rosa," rather than giallo or some other overly bright color, which may be where the above idiom originated from.
Another one more true to the thread is:

Dirty Limericks
Posted:

Not original, but fun:
Poor old Prunella was built like a fella
So she went 'round to see Doctor Kerr
He said 'Now then, make haste,'
but when stripped to the waist
He couldn't help calling her 'sir.'
'Don't worry your head, I'm a surgeon', he said
'I'll graft you two on, just like that.'
Then he went and got plastered
The silly old . . . fool
And he grafted them onto her back.
Now poor old Prunella, she can't get a fella
To walk or to talk or romance with.
'Cause who wants to chat
With a girl, looks like that
But, by God, she's great fun to dance with!
Original one:
I said, "What a great moustache, Guy!
It's clipped and sharp--what superb art!"
(But to my great surprise,
I had failed to realize
Guy's head was between a girl's thighs.)

Drew Carey: I love Cleveland. The weather is just terrible there--too cold. All we want to know in Cleveland is where the hell’s all that global warming we’ve been hearing so much about. That’s all they ever do in the winter, stand outside with an aerosol can. >ssst< That’s right. Fvck the grandkids. I’m cold now.
Drew Carey: *wobbles the mic stand* Bernie Kosar scrambling. "He's at the 31, the 32 ..."
or,
This is my impression of Bernie Kosar. *knocks over mic stand*
I'm surprised I forgot these, as I'm usually quoting them whenever the cold or global warming is brought up (can't seem to say one without the other).

Benny Hill: "So help me, I'll kiss you!"
Woman: "So kiss me, I'll help you."
Zach Galifianakis: I look like a fat Jesus, not phat Jesus. Hookers don't like to snuggle. My dream is to move to India, or Pakistan. And become a cab driver.
Christopher Guest as Nigel Tufnel: It's like, how much more black could this be? And the answer is none. None more black.

Micro Fiction challange. 101 words

For sale: Baby shoes, never worn. - Ernest Hemingway's 6 word story. Micro-micro fiction at its best.
Pardon my attempt at cheekiness (and use of the word cheekiness--I watched Australia recently :P). The title does have nothing to do with the story whatsoever.
Thank you for the feedback, mbm8377. :)

Almost like write a story in 6 words.
I call this: Baby Shoes. :P
*********************************
The last Victorian house stood at the end of the long drive, grinning back at me.
Wind whistled through the trees; the branches swayed; the leaves scratched. What leaves were left, anyway, dry and skeletal, their color withered as if their souls had been sapped.
The wind was not cold. In truth, it had not been this warm in weeks. I could almost feel the gravel move beneath my shoes as I strode down the long drive toward the house. Any other day it might have been frozen solid—enough to break an arm.
Not today.
Fire would burn well today.

Screenwriting software cheaper than Final Draft?

But, formatting a screenplay is tough. The tools do help. You've got scene setting and dialogue and scene changes, etc. Dialogue has to be centered and bolded and the character's name has to be all caps. Scenes have to be left justified. It's very tiring. I would prefer to use a SP software.
Everything you just mentioned as tiring can be done on Word/Pages. I'm not sure why they would be more tiring than writing any other manuscript, as a keyboard, with the correct command keys, or a word processing program's toolbars, can make these transitions very fast. Never look at writing as if you're being tortured to do it! Remember, it's supposed to be fun! And remember, we could still be stuck with quill pens and inkwells and sand, nevermind a typewriter! A click or two is not that hard.
(And I guess the premise of this post was to second--or rather, third--what Hank said.)
