The seven habits of highly incapable technotards

Not just for technotards, but for many people who see themselves as 'experts' at something......
Pouring scorn on those they regard as 'inferior'.
One thing I've learned in my efforts to become an 'expert' is that circumstances always have that humbling way of making me look like an idiot. For me, acknowledging that others may not be 'expert' in the same areas as myself is good insurance that those same people will perhaps tolerate my shortcomings when I need their expertise.
This is a joke/humor thread. Not a "whine because I display the characteristics that everyone's laughing at" thread. Lighten up already.

I would disagree with several of those ``habits.''
(1) conference calls with lcd projectors are just another way to waste time playing with gadgets.
(2) I deliberately ``lose'' email because people send it for the silliest reasons. I don't need to receive email from someone who is only 10 feet away and could just as easily ask a question using the old fashioned vocal cords.
(4) Any technical person worth his/her salt can run a mail server and edit the sendmail.cf file. By hand.
(5) Anyone who is technologically inclined realizes that shared media existed 20+ years ago. It's not a new development related to microsoft.
(6) I like reading documents printed on paper. It's easier to carry paper around than my 55 lb sgi octane2. Paper uses less electricity, too.
(7) I'm pretty sure lots of people who think they grasp the concept of the internet, don't.
The bottom line is that just because something is possible, it doesn't mean doing it is a good idea. For example, it's really funny watching people spend 10 times a long trying to locate a document on a hard drive, only to find they can't read it because it was written in a newer version of the word processing program they use or is in a file format they can't read and then call that efficiency.
Aww, this isn't funny. Why are there so many uptight people on here? Real nerds are fun. You know that just because one has intelligence doesn't mean you have to lack a sense of humor. I would go on, but I just got bored....

I predict it will fail, as will OnLive. I like to have something tangible in my hands, not pay for a subscription I may never use. XBox live is down today; if I didn't have any discs, my 360 would be a paperweight.
Perhaps. But I still think this technology could lead to a much richer web experience. Perhaps they could integrate it w/ social networking, etc etc. It may not cause people to get rid of their favorite consoles, but it may be useful in other areas.

While I know I'm a geek, and technologically competant; i realize that I;m just good at what I do and try to tolerate users as much as possible. At the moment; i don't know anything about enignes (tho i will soon), I will not blame my car dying on me as the mechanic's fault; nor will I assume that he is treating me like a fool.
I spend my days hading people with these attitudes their ass because they feel so high and mighty in one subject but do not know a single damn thing about another subject. It's fine to be the best in your chosen subject; its another to be humbled enough to know you don't know and cannot know everything in an area of life; and be humbled to acknoledge those who put more effort into other areas than you put into your own.
Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!!!!
Well, I don't "hade" the tools on this site that lack sense of humor. Anyone who spend their days "hading" people is just a really sad individual. That's a productive way to spend your day and enjoy your life. AND, it actually causes people to change.
I would say more, except, the only opinion that matters to me is my own. So, I really do not care.
Well, I'm about to check on the "enignes" on my cars to make sure they are still working. Because I "hade" when my "enigne" doesn't work. I think I saw the check "enigne" light on.

OTOY is developing technology for delivering real-time “cinematic quality” 3D rendering through any web browser.
The technology has the potential to be used for online games, 3D virtual communities, instant messaging and social networking applets among other things.
OTOY has partnered with AMD to deliver this innovative technology.
http://www.otoy.com/
When we first looked at OTOY about a year ago, the small company was trying to deliver a server-side 3D rendering technology that could allow modern video games to be played on basically any client. A lofty goal, for sure. Then OnLive was unveiled in March at GDC, and it sent ripples around much of the gaming world with a similar concept of cloud-based gaming (both good and bad). But OTOY believes it has a more lightweight and elegant way to do things, that is also more extensible. And it has a couple of key partnerships to prove it: EA and AMD.
Let’s run through some of the details quickly: OTOY is 100% browser-based, and works is all modern web browsers. All it requires is a broadband connection, and that will give you 720p (HD) graphics, with no plugins and no downloads. There is also a way to get 1080p graphics, though that’s a bit more intensive, obviously. But they key is that this is all done on OTOY’s servers and transmitted down from the cloud to run on whatever client you want, basically instantaneously.
You can check out a cpl demo vids on this site:

What turns me on must about a guy (and can turn me off the most) is his scent. I love the natural smell of a guy. Not stench, but his natural scent. I don't like if they guy wears too much cologne. But a freshly showered guy is intoxicating to me. If a guy smells good, I'd notice him right away. In fact, when I'm dating someone, I like to wear his shirts, sleep on his chest, stuff like that for that very reason. Guess I'm a weirdo.

Hey, people may not THINK they are lying. We all have out stories, I'm sure. Some good, some where ya ran for the hills screaming. It's just like writing a resume. People build themselves up to be more, or exaggerate the facts a little (or a lot) to land the job. 1 of my coworkers once said, if you cannot disprove it or if you do not verify it, then it's true.
I think people lie about all sorts of things, like how tall they are, what they drive, how much money they make, their past, experiences they've had, whether or not that's really their hair, even about what their true intentions are. It's like "Yea, babe, I'm looking for a long term relationship, isn't that what you wanna hear? Ok, there, I've said it. Now let's get naked".

The seven habits of highly incapable technotards

TeeHee, found this and felt like sharing! Yay!!!

The seven habits of highly incapable technotards
by Dudley B. Dawson
They say that technology has a learning curve. Technotards are the reason for this. A technotard is someone who is severely technology impaired, and more importantly, completely incapable of learning. They ignore simple logic. If their TV is unplugged, they spend two hours staring at their cable box. Staring is a favorite troubleshooting technique among the technotarded crowd. The simple concept of "If x=y, then A, else B" is simply too much to handle. Sadly, many of Corporate America's cubes (and all of its offices) are filled with these technotards.
To celebrate their stupidity, I present to you the seven habits of incapable technotards:
1. Unable to lead a a meeting requiring a conference call, online conference, or LCD projector.
Technotards are able to take one hour meetings and turn them into the worst 60 minutes of your life. Read What happens when a technotard leads a meeting?
2. Misplacing or losing emails.
Within a few months of starting any job at a large corporation, you are introduced to the term "email jail" Large corporations seem to be the preference among technotards, especially those who are incapable of archiving or deleting emails. As a result, they have at least 50 bounced emails per week.
3. Placing 'The' before anything technology related.
Perfectly described in The Onion article "Google Launches 'The Google' for Older Adults", technotards (not just old people) love to add 'The' to the beginning of everything computer related. The Excel, The Oracle, The Email are just a few of the phrases you might hear come out of the mouth of a technotard. Related item: Technotards that refer to SQL as "squeel".
4. Using your ISP or work email address as your personal email account.
This is a sure fire way of determining if someone is a technotard. If you ever receive an email and it has @comcast.net, @cox.net (although I like that one), @netzero.com, or perhaps the worst, @aol.com, you can be sure that they are a technotard. These people still call it "webmail", and they stay away from GMail, Hotmail, and YahooMail for self-described "security" reasons.
5. Emailing large documents and refusing to use a shared network, such as Microsoft Sharepoint, or other file sharing resources.
Technotards are either not aware of the existence of shared servers or they have not yet mastered that skill. They just got comfortable with The Email and it wasn't too long ago when someone showed them what the paper clip meant.
6. Using the printer as their primary method of storage.
Technotards do not process the concept of storing documents on a hard drive. Explaining the idea of storing information on a hard drive that they cannot physically see is 10 years down the line. These people use 80% of the paper supplied by your organization. For more on people that love to print, read What is an office tree killer?
7. Believing that the Internet is actually something stored in their computer.
A large number of people at the workplace, over the age of 50, are still unable to grasp the concept of the Internet. They still seem to believe that anything appearing on their monitor is stored somewhere in their computer. For the severely technotarded, they believe that same information is actually inside the monitor and not the computer. They are still blown away by the 1996 Encarta CD-ROM that included multimedia. To this day, they still ask others if they can "download the Encarta CD-ROM off the Internet".
Honorable mention:
- Forgetting passwords on a weekly basis.
- Being afraid to click on anything because you think it might make the computer explode.
- Triple clicking on icons (for those that are not afraid of the computer exploding).
- Asking other people questions that are easily found with a simple google search.
- Having no idea how to turn the cell phone ringer to vibrate.
- Receiving a text and trying to talk into the phone to ask who sent the text.

Why is there so little dating between white men and black women?
Posted:
6/14/2009 9:20:20 PM
Someone mentioned something like "why does ethnicity matter?". I agree...but I agree in a sense that it should not concern anyone who I date, rather it be male, female, black, white, jew, or gentile...or whether I solely date one particular demographic. No one can live my life/make my choices, I can.
I totally agree w/ you, that you've a right to your preferences. I've said that from the start. I also agreed w/ OP that your experiences shape your outlook on life. So, if you think a certain way doesn't make you wrong. Just some ways of thinking I think is bad. That doesn't make it so. It only makes it my opinion.
At the same time, thinking that way is no different than those who are biased and only date those of the same ethnicity. It's the same train of thought. People think that because they choose to only date exclusively outside their race, that they aren't exhibiting bigotry. It's the same thing. It isn't right or wrong as a fact. As an opinion, my opinion, it's wrong.

And like I said, everyone has a right to their preferences and opinions, including me. An opinion is not right or wrong. If my opinion differs from yours, it's just that. It is not wrong. Neither is your opinion wrong. You can say you disagree, but calling me wrong is...well, wrong. Haha.
It seems to me that when someone disagrees w/ you, then it's wrong. An opinion is not a fact, therefore it isn't wrong. Yes, I disagree w/ the w/ you. And I have a right to that. So, no I'm not wrong.
Ok winterlotus I am just a person who make ingornant comments thats fine. If that how you see my words then fine ive learned that you cant change people's opinion so why bother.
Like I said, you personalized my original response. If that's what you believe, then go ahead and continue believing that. I won't miss a wink of sleep. However, that is not what I said.
Vashti's words not mine!
yet they might find ww attractive who have tanned skin, fuller lips, curvy (in the right spots) confident etc. many of the attributes that many bw have naturally but somehow are less appealing on us....? (raises an eyebrow)
She didn't say those characteristics were "false". That was my point. YOU used the word false.
So, I have a bit of a short attention span, so I won't make a long response other than to say that this is a forum and we have the right to disagree w/ each other w/o being defensive. I do not retract anything I've said, as it was all an opinion and I have a right to it. As far as my using the word "ignorant", that's just what I believe when people think a certain way. If you see yourself in my words, there's nothing I can do to change that.

lets face it, ethical hackers don't sell newspapers or make good news stories!
agreed, because we are the unsung heroes in the background.
HOWEVER, you don't know of any "non-malicious incidents" because they aren't reported. so again, an assumption on your part. if you associate malware to hacking then of course you'll deem it all bad. that just isn't the case. no one gathers data on the work of "good" hackers. but that's the point of forums, yes? let the assumptions and opinions prevail.

I disgree with you winterlotus
First off, let me apologize if you mistakenly believed that my response was directed at you. I never said you were ignorant. I don't know you, so I would never insult you in that regard. It seems to me that you personalized my response when it wasn't even directed at you. It seems that you are being defensive for no reason. My response was to the entire thread, not specifically to you. I would have quoted you had I meant you specifically, as I did w/ this thread.
And you have the right to your opinion and preferences. As I stated in my post. But I'm right on the money. You haven't dated ALL white males, so you haven't a right to label them all based on the few you've experienced. Everyone's different. Just like you are a black female and so am I. However, we are 2 totally different people. You cannot assume anything about me based on an experience w/ you. That's my point.
Now, as far as ignorance goes, stating that "white men do this" or "white men think that" or "having tanned skin, full lips, etc" are "false features" on white women is ignorant. not all white men think the way the ones you've experience think. That's just as bad as those that label you w/ stereotypical black woman characteristics. Races mix. Physical characteristics are passed down. If a white woman has naturally full lips, then they are natural. She isn't being fake. Should white women w/ full lips get them lipo'd so that they can be more white? I mean, come on, that just doesn't make any sense.
Having said that, I totally agreed w/ everything that Vashti65 said in her last post. She made no generalizations about any ethnicity. Sometimes it's not what you say, but how you say it. You have a right to your preferences, as do I. I respect that. I really do. Also, experience does shape your outlook on life. However, it's my belief, and i have a right to that, that limiting yourself to 1 ethnicity (regardless if that ethnicity is that of your own or not) is bigotry. But that's just my opinion. You may disagree w/ it all you want.

Ethical hacking may well be good but I suspect most hacking is not done by ethical hackers
That's just an assumption on your part. Like, I said, it's subjective. I totally disagree w/ that most hacking is not done by ethical hackers. Every government employ hackers for national security purposes. Is that good or bad? According to the 1 government, it's good as it crucial to protecting one's national security. To other governments, it's bad. There are a lot of corporations which employ hackers to find vulnerabilities in they're security infrastructure, etc, etc. So, like I said, it depends what you consider "bad hacking" to be. I think people who hack into people's computers to get bank info, etc, is on a much smaller scale. That's not where the real money is. So until you really understand what it means (in other words become informed) then of course you'll think it's bad. Like I've said before, many people think things they do not understand is bad or negative in some way. Such as life.

Why does ethnicity matter so much to people? If you are of 1 race and only date someone of another race (say you're a black chick that only like white guys), isn't that still discrimination? Isn't that still a certain level of bigotry? Isn't that the pot calling the kettle black? Granted, everyone has right to their preferences. I believe that and appreciate it. I say live and let live. HOWEVER, to me, if you let something as superficial as ethnicity, something that one cannot change (unless you're Michael Jackson), then it's just discrimination and closed-mindedness. Why can't people just looking for someone cool regardless of race? I think when you limit yourself to an ethnicity, you are looking for someone who has the stereotypical characteristics of that race. Which is just ignorant. In that regard, you are being just as ignorant as the people that are biased against those who are of a different ethnicity of their own. You're being just as ignorant as those in the south that everyone is speaking of.
I would never let something as superficial as ethnicity prevent me from missing out on someone cool. I don't care what shade they come in. Because ethnicity will NEVER dictate who that person is underneath.

They are what they call ethical hackers or white hat hackers that are the good guys. There are hacker conventions every year in Vegas, which are a lot of fun!
So hacking isn't a bad thing as hollywood makes it out to be. Only the un-informed will consider it a bad thing. Which is what most people do w/ things they don't understand.

No home firewall product will block it by default.
Yes, i have a home firewall and it does block it by default. That's why I asked. I've only worked w/ firewalls in the workplace in our development environment. When we build our development environment, it's out of the box. We configure everything ourselves. So, yea, I'm can't agree w/ ya on that part.
Also, from what I hear from earlier post, IRC isn't used only for chatting. And chatting isn't prohibited, but encouraged at my job. No one calls each other anymore, we hit each other up on IM. OR, if we can't find anyone on IM, we email. If we don't get a timely reply, we put a meeting on they're calendar or text them. Wow, work has become so inpersonal. Haha.
So, yea....

What is with the 'Don't talk to me ifs'
Posted:
6/13/2009 10:23:16 PM
I didn't put anything like that in my profile because I know it wouldn't work. Also, because I wouldn't want to scare off someone cool through the possible appearance of negativity on my part, when I'm not a negative person. I'd much rather represent who I really am in the hopes of who I'm looking for will actually see that and respond. There's nothing you can put in your profile that will prevent these types of responses. This is a free site. You get what you pay for, yes?
So, it doesn't really matter what you put in your profile, you will still get crazy stuff. So why bother? When I get guys contacting me w/ stuff I don't wanna read/hear, I simple exercise my delete key and move on. Yay!!!!!
I think if they see the "Read Deleted" next to their sent message to me, they'll get the hint. If not, they'll get the hint after the next few messages get the same response.

When you love someone, just because you move away, doesn't mean the love stops instantaneously. It takes a while. I think that continuing to talk to her is preventing you from moving on. So, yea, it's going to feel like your cheating. When you hook up w/ someone in that state (even if it's only oral), your body is there, but nothing else is. When you're done, you'll feel super guilty afterwards. So, in my opinion, it wouldn't be worth it. You should get over her prior to hooking up w/ someone else. Even if it's only physical. You'll feel like crap afterwards, otherwise.
It took me a while to get over my ex, but I managed it. During that time, I couldn't imagine anyone else touching me the way he did. So I gave myself the time to get over him. The only way I could was to totally cut him off. Out of sight, out of mind is way true.

Yes people still use it. It's painless group instant chatting, and nothing has come to replace it over the years.
As for security, I'm not sure what you'd expect. Standard IMs are sent in cleartext, so its not like they would fare better. As for user authentication, schemes are provided (nickserv), but it's not like it was ever really needed.
Wow, I suppose I learn something new each day. I think I was like in kindergarten when IRC was being used heavily. Somehow, it stopped being used as much. Every firewall I've EVER used blocked IRC traffic. One of my coworkers told me that it's because too much information either is transmitted via IRC or obtained via IRC. I'm not sure why, but I know there are security implications of using IRC. Anyone know? I guess I can look it up...

well, i like to think of myself as a lady nerd. and there are lots of us out there. we just hide it at times. sometimes guys can't deal w/ smart chicks. such as life, i suppose.
i usually meet guys in bookstores, since that's one of my main hangouts. yea, i love books....and coffee. and bookstores have both! yay! i am, also, a gamer and computer nerd. i, also, hang out at arcades and frequent gaming conventions.

The jvm is just the runtime engine and could run whatever was compiled to machine-independent bytecode (although it's almost -always- from java source code). For example, you could compile FORTRAN to java bytecode and run it on the jvm, but that wouldn't give you a FORTRAN framework.
ah, thanks for the correction. my bad. i didn't feel like typing all that out. but, yea, you can compile ADA into java bytecode as well as other languages. and sun microsystems (who developed java) isn't the only producer of JVMs, which could cause conflicts at runtime. blah blah blah. have to leave something for the guy to look up, no?

haha, i doesn't matter to me either way. shirtless pic? great. no shirtless pic? also great. it wouldn't be a deciding factor in the least on whether or not i'd contact someone. it wouldn't be like "hey, this guy has an awesome profile. he seems nice. we have a lot in common. but he doesn't wear shirts when he's photographed, so that's a deal breaker". i mean, come on!

oh come on guys, don't be so hard on him. everyone has a right to their preferences. everyone doesn't have to like everyone. we all have our preferences. now, having said that, i think people should be honest about what their preferences are in their profiles as to limit the confusion of would-be suitors (can chicks be suitors? or are they suitresses or suitettes?). anyways, i think you should always be honest w/ people while having tact. at the same time, sometimes diplomacy, along w/ wisdom, comes w/ age and experience.

I have been searching for some sample coding sites, if you come across any, let me know! :)
the best place to get code is from google. yay!!!
again, you can search for sample code on google from the google code site: http://code.google.com/
you can use the same advanced google search features to find whatever you're looking for. i'm a grad student and i find that site invaluable.
if ya don't know how to use advanced google searching (look up google hacking), then try the advance google code search page: http://www.google.com/codesearch/advanced_code_search
ok, anymore info, i'll have to charge ya.

the "java framework" you speak of is called the jvm (java virtual machine). most people have java on their machines already. python maybe easier to develop since there's no compilation phase, but what you save during development will impact you during runtime/execution (meaning the end result will run a lot slower than a java program). so if you build anything slightly extensive you'll end up having performance issues. HOWEVER, you do have JPython, which allows you to use python w/ java.
oh and java is more secure. did i mention that? :o)

I plan to make applications that run on the Windows platform, but I'd like to have the freedom to allow the applications to be used on any platform the user chooses, thus why I want to start coding in Python.
The prospect of having to the user install the .NET framework, C++ Redistribution package, etc.. in order to work makes me worry about issues that could arise down the line in terms of security, functionality, and stability.
PS: if you're looking for interoperability, i'd suggest java (since you've got the jvm which is platform specific). it's also pretty secure, robust, and more reliable. if ya don't know java, it'll take ya longer to learn it than python, but it'll be worth it. plus, i hear either it is or it will be pretty soon one of the supported languages w/ the .net framework, so that'd integrate pretty well w/ your windows environment.

Thanks! :D I saw the O'Reilly books but keep thinking their linked to the idiot of that factor show so I tend to pass them up lol. I'll check them out.
well, if you're a noob, you have to start somewhere. python's easy. if you already have the foundation of scripting down, then all's ya need is reference material to show ya syntax. whatcha need a deep manual for? unless you are an idiot that needs to start from scratch. python isn't rocket science. yay!!!
happy hunting!

I, personally, dig the O'Reilly line of books. I guess because I have a touch of ADD. Tee-Hee. But, seriously, I have a short attention span, so the "in a Nutshell" books are awesome for me.
A lot of these books can be found online for free in an eBook format (pdf, chm) if you are good w/ advance google searches. I love google, yay!!!!
I just did a search and found lots of eBooks on Python. I would post a link, but these things move around, plus, I'm allergic to getting sued for copyrighted content. But if ya email me, I'd be happy to point a couple out to ya.

Anyone game on Unix/Linux?
Posted:
6/11/2009 4:35:35 PM
Just wondering of all the many games on unix/linux which ones are the most popular. I love my Xbox 360, but a lot of my co-workers are into pc gaming, so I figured I'd see if anyone on here was as well.
Here are a few I've tried so far:
FPS
Yo Frankie! - Graphics were kinda cool. But it was too kiddie or my taste. Wish it was a lil more violent
World of Padman - Again, a lil too cartoon-y for me.
Racing
VDrift - This one was fun. Yay! Even though my ADD usually kicks in when playing sports and racing games.
MMORPG
Vendetta - This was fun. It's no WoW, but fun nonetheless
Strategic
Dwarf Fortress - OMG, this one was overly difficult. I mean, I totally dig a challenge, but this one's ridiculous. So, yea, I doubt I'll be playing that one again.
Wesnoth - This one was fun. The graphics kinda sucked, but I liked it.

ioXtreme - PCI HDD faster than solid state drives
Posted:

So it's twice as expensive as the SLC flash drives. It damn well better be faster. Way to expensive to be worthwhile. On a desktop you have the space to do thinks like RAID 0 the 4 MLC flash drives you could buy for that price.
that's definitely true. i think the solid state drives are way too expensive. but i think this is still in the relatively early research stages. i think it would be awesome for computer gamers. may just be the extra nanosecond you need to have a leg up on your component(s). never know.
i dig it cuz it's compact, not as many components to that could cause failures, and it isn't sensitive to motion (as w/ the solid state drives). oh, and did i mention it's pretty? that may be worth the cost in and of itself, no?

And it's pretty too!!! Yay!!!
Back at the end of 2007 I introduced you guys to a company called Fusion-IO, which was producing hard drives that ran on your PCI-Express slots. It was a pretty cool idea then, but unfortunately their offering was really salty, and aimed primarily at enterprise customers. Well since one of the co-founders is a hardcore gamer, they decided to branch out and try to bring the same incredible performance to a new crowd.
Enter the ioXtreme. This card holds 80GB of storage (NAND Flash) which is capable of giving you a performance boost that you won’t see by just upgrading your CPU and RAM. Games, large applications like Photoshop and Final Cut will open almost instantaneously. They likened it to bringing up a program that was minimized on your start bar, which is pretty incredible. They even said that it would be possible to boot Windows in just one second. Unfortunately this feature won’t be available at launch, due to them still working out bugs with a few different BIOS, it will however be available via a driver update. The card should be launching later this year for somewhere around $800, though the price is subject to change.
