Why Do Some Radio Stations Play The Same Songs?
Posted: 4/9/2008 5:28:42 AM
Most radio programmers are deathly afraid that listeners will change the station if something comes on that is remotely unfamiliar to them. So the playlists are heavily "focus grouped" to make sure the songs are as safe and generally popular as possible. Commercial radio caters to the blandest majority of those who just want some predictable background music for their daily job or commute.

Censorship in Art
Posted: 4/4/2008 10:57:35 PM
Interesting topic for your research paper. I don't think you're going to find very many people advocating censorship in general. If you handle the issue as a very broad "freedom of speech" issue, you'll have a fairly easy time getting people to agree with you, as most responses on the thread indicate :)

The fine arts have the additional issue of public funding. It's when taxpayer dollars get involved that a lot of the controversy in modern times has happened. If an art gallery completely supports itself with donations, that's pretty easy to stick up for their right to show whatever they want. But when an art gallery needs public funding from the community, one could argue that the community is entitled to say they can reject something because it doesn't "reflect the community's values", or whatever.

Public funding doesn't even have to be a censorship issue, maybe the community simply wants their taxpayer dollars spent on other things, even if the art isn't offensive to anybody. Not sure if public funding is even relevant to your paper, but I thought I'd throw it out there. Good luck!

I missed the New Year's POF event in Brantford and I still haven't made it out to this club before, so I'll give it a shot if it looks like I can make it when the day gets closer.... it's good to see the hosts trying to make POF events in Brantford a semi-regular thing again after a long hiatus

Influential Visual Artist
Posted: 8/22/2007 5:10:26 PM
Giotto is a very important painter in the development of the Italian Renaissance. He abandoned the medieval style of depicting people as stiff and idealized, and went for a more three-dimensional and realistic look. He was the first guy to try painting this way since Roman times, and got the next generations of artists painting more lifelike figures and experimenting with perspective, getting into all that other cool stuff we associate with Renaissance art. So Giotto might not be a household name or have a Ninja Turtle named for him, but he was pretty special.

At the next visit to the supermarket, be sure to visit the chips aisle to behold the awesome, yet bizarre, power of KETCHUP flavoured potato chips, a delicacy nearly unknown to our southern neighbours. Also, "Homo milk" is a uniquely Canadian term for whole milk.

One that I don't think has been mentioned yet is "Wanderer Above The Sea Of Fog" by Caspar David Friedrich.

today's TV shows totally SUCK
Posted: 8/15/2007 3:57:48 AM
I pretty much only watch current events type shows, there are a few well-made dramas I could probably get into, but I never end up watching them... books, music and movies can target 'niche' markets but there isn't as much of that on TV unless you go for the high-end expensive cable packages.

Vinyl vs. CD
Posted: 8/15/2007 3:27:01 AM
I only had kiddie records so I've pretty much only ever known CDs... but one thing that struck me as very cool while looking at old records is the much larger artwork on the jackets and inner sleeves... and the little 'extras' that were sometimes included such as a poster, a set of stickers or other goodies. When you bought a double live album you'd often get a gatefold full of big photos of the artist performing live, to look at while playing the records... in the age before MTV and the internet you had to use your imagination more when thinking about an artist, and album packaging was an important part of shaping that imagination for the listener.

any advice?
Posted: 8/14/2007 10:51:07 PM
All those proverbs about "you have to fight to get anything worth fighting for" may be true for dream jobs or other goals like that, but it's not true of the affections of other people. It's virtually never worth it to fight for those.... to have to fight at all should tell you something.

You do WHAT with your food?
Posted: 3/13/2007 9:19:56 PM
Another "one food component at a time" person here :)

Also, if something has a "crust" all around it, like a pop tart, I go for the crust first. This crust-first policy does not apply to something like a slice of pizza, because the crust is not "surrounding" the pizza if you take a slice out.

I love seeing how much Yonge St has changed from when the video was done...

Some other '80s videos shot in recognizable parts of Toronto:

I'm An Adult Now by Pursuit Of Happiness
Romantic Traffic by the Spoons
Spadina Bus by Shuffle Demons
Rise Up by Parachute Club
Allied Forces by Triumph (GREAT shot of that video arcade, across from Sam The Record Man, when it was BIG)

The show you're thinking of was called 'Boogie' and it aired on City-TV from 1975-77... I know, probably like you, I saw those clips on the Much More Music Retro Dance Party and thought "was that a REAL show?"

There was also a 'Boogie Junior' for kids!!!! A 12 year old Mike Myers was on it!

Canadian Idiot.....Weird Al
Posted: 11/5/2006 7:50:50 PM
This song is making fun of American attitudes toward other countries at least as much as Canada, if not more. Who really thinks a lyric like "never even bring their guns to the mall" is a dig against Canada's culture and not the USA's? Check out the lyrics to another Weird Al song, "Trigger Happy"!

I saw Al play in Brantford in '95 and he told the crowd something about it being really great to visit such a hockey heritage city... the birthplace of.....

..."the zamboni!!!" I think he really likes saying that word!

Posted: 9/16/2006 3:12:43 AM
I'm not sure if I have yet. I think I might have initiated contact with one. If something in the profile really grabbed me, I probably would. Why not? Aren't you both at least halfway there if you appear compatible in terms of lifestyle and personality?

What I sometimes see on POF and don't "get" is when a female posts a boring pictureless profile with very little information on it, yet still manages 10-20 favourites or more with it! Hmmm, makes you curious what's happening there?

Advice from Cosmo - is it good advice?
Posted: 7/21/2006 4:02:16 PM
All these tips have a common thread running through them: to not seem desperate and clingy. That's GOOD advice: neediness is a common turn-off for BOTH sexes. So there is some truth here. The rest of it is just filling column space. #4 bothers me the most because I don't think women would like it very much if that scenario was flipped around. That tip has the most potential to be disresectful to the other party, I think. And what happens if the guy is trying not to be clingy/needy HIMSELF, and decides to back off a bit to see how the GIRL reacts? Something to think about, no?

I would say just follow one basic premise here: don't act desperate!

Men, what do you like and not like about being a guy?
Posted: 7/14/2006 5:12:48 PM
I don't have much to add, although under "likes" I didn't see anybody say "can walk around the neighbourhood at night and not feel as worried". That's a good one.

Under "dislikes" I would add toughing it out through all these dating sites, because men vastly outnumber the women. Getting responses from women is DIFFICULT unless you have a LOT going for you to stand out from the pack.

Peacock in the Backyard!
Posted: 7/7/2006 5:07:23 AM
Growing up in the country there were some unusual animal sightings out there:

- saw a wolf once
- deer, sometimes several at once
- a big groundhog living behind the wood stockpile. He was seen often enough to get a name (Brutus).
- raccoons, including a wandering family. The baby raccoons followed in a line like ducklings.
- various neighbours had geese, a goat, the oldest horse in the world (but with no papers to verify it), emus, and a a turkey that wandered onto our property once. Dad had to shoo it home with a broom bellowing "TURKEY, GO HOME!" Had to be there

Well, my fellow age-defying Brantfordian, I don't see anything "wrong" in your profile. Though if you filled out your interests, it would help people to find you when they're running a search for POF'ers with the same interests as them.

Karaoke Party @ Boomers in Hamilton, June 17th
Posted: 6/3/2006 6:30:50 PM
Looked at my schedule and since I don't work that night, it's looking like I can attend this one. So I'm signed up for the moment... I hope I can see some more names that are familiar to me on the signup list as the day gets nearer (yeah, I'm a bit shy).

I take it we're not as worried about Boomers' capacity, with a cutoff guest list and everything, like last time? A lot of people (including me) were concerned about the capacity, but I guess it turned out fine the last time.

AWESOME BRANTFORD PARTY
Posted: 6/3/2006 5:20:46 PM
My second POF event in my hometown and even better than the first one... thanks everyone. Don't think I made it into any pictures (again) so I'll have to make a real effort next time. Saw a few people I'd met before such as the Wednesday coffee gang (Plenty Of Fumes) and its AWOL member Carrie, as well as Kitchna - I still wasn't sure if you would recognize me but I think ya did!

Met some new people too who were quite, uhhh.... interesting in different ways (observation: if someone greets you late in the party by shuffling up and extending their LEFT hand, this introduction may not count for the permanent record ) But yeah, some interesting new people indeed and I hope to be able to see a certain number of them again soon, that's for sure. My work schedule allows room for Boomers again on June 17th so if it works out I hope to see some familiar fishies there once more

THE FIRST DATE: destination do's and donts...what do you think?
Posted: 4/25/2006 5:32:50 AM
Bah! Nothing wrong with a coffee house I say. I looked up the data for this survey and 9% of those surveyed said they would avoid it. So it got onto this list even though 91% of people seem OK with it!

Wouldn't a carnival/amusement park be more enjoyable if you already know each other so you're both OK with close touching on rides?
