Personal Happiness.
Posted: 10/8/2009 4:46:39 PM
So does that mean that happiness causes lung cancer?

No it means you die happy!

What you say is sad really, give yourself a break. We all have the constant potential to be better; that doesn't mean that we should live in a permanent state of self dissapointment for what we have not yet achieved. You need to value yourself for who you are and not what you havent yet achieved!

Gambling addiction
Posted: 10/7/2009 9:53:47 PM
I'm an old fashioned prude on this question. Gambling is immoral! The most obscene endorsement of this vile practice is the State National Lottery. I do not think that the state should be endorsing this activity.
Having said that I support legal gambling, because at least some controls can be placed on it.
I also think that hard drugs should be distributed legally and prostitution should be legal as well. It’s the only way to try and keep the criminals out of the business. The only person that can help an addict is the addict themselves.
Publicans and bookies should be taxed to fund rehab centres.
Lap dancing clubs should be forced to play Riverdance music when the girls are cavorting, in an attempt to inject some dramatic effect to their performances. Their aesthetic standards are appallingly low. The clubs should be taxed heavily in order to support the Arts Council which has taken a budgetary beating as a result of the recent credit crunch!

Posted: 10/7/2009 8:55:53 PM
I arranged to meet up with a lady from here not too long ago. After making the arrangement I went online that night as usual to check my messages. There was one message from the lady in question; it said “What are you still doing online now that you have me?”
The following day I sent her a text explaining that I wouldn’t be able to make the date after all as some unexpected urgent business cropped up that needed my attention. Thankfully I haven’t heard from her since!

the losers in this country are people who work in the private sector with normal jobs.

No the real losers in this state are the people who were fired from their private sector jobs and have to live on €204 a week! What do you want, the abolition of social welfare? Let’s hope your boss keeps you on the parole!

Being friend with someone of the opposite sex
Posted: 10/7/2009 8:18:38 PM
Simply me being me:
thanks for the vote of confidence! When I think about it friends that I really value are about half and half men and women. One of my very best friends is a woman. One of the joys of friendship is the intimacy which is platonic in nature and also involves real affection. Real love exists between friends without the urge to make it sexual be they male or female!
Also real friendship has a tendency to last a lifetime. It (friendship) probably has a much better track record than marriage/relationships any day!

I know your heart is in the right place but the years have hardened me. I think that you can’t teach an old dog new tricks’ and for abusive parents its more than of too late to try and start reforming them as laudable as the attempt may be.
For the kids on the other hand there is hope; hope of giving them the chance of a decent start in life. The logistics of how that can be achieved is another matter but the principle is important.
PS – I like when you get irate; I admire your enthusiasm, shows you care!

As it so happens I worked in the area (working with disadvantaged kids in care) also.
Granted the care system is nothing to write home about but it’s naive to assume that all kids are better off under the guardianship of abusive parents. Some parents or guardians are clearly unfit and a downright danger to their children. Actually most of the kids in care that I encountered had ran away from severely abusive home situations preferring the atrocious conditions of living rough on the streets to the alternative at home.
I'm saying that a responsible society should do all in its power at an official level to ensure that innocent children are given an appropriate chance. I'm sure you must agree in principle with that.
I am talking about parents who deliberately deny their children the opportunities they deserve by using them as pawns in the begging game on the streets! I have no hesitation in recommending that those children be taken into care and their parents be gaoled /deported whatever for their grotesque transgressions………………………………….smile!

P.S . your attempt to patronise me is merely impertinent! I forgive you.

That was a good post and I do understand where you are coming from. I suppose what I'm really saying is that I cannot care about all the ill’s of the world.

My motto is to take care of the people I know and love. There is a practical limit to what I can do for the rest. Occasionally I come across particularly wretched people begging for help and I do help them. However I do agree with you in saying that at an official level more efficient efforts should be made to rectify the problem of destitution on our streets. When one thinks about all the wrongs in this country that aren’t necessary it can make ones blood boil; I could pontificate about it for ever but what’s the use?

Personally I'm particularly interested in programs which promote the welfare of children. If intervention is there early enough it can make a huge difference. I do believe that if children are associated with begging in any way on the streets they should immediately be taken into care.

You must be blessed with alot of spare change. I'm approached at least 20 times a day for spare change. If I were to give say €1 to each , that would cost me minimum €140 per week!

I can think of better things to do with my spare change!

Mir,
Your last post is really well written, I loved it. I'm going to recommend you as a promising new screenwriter for ‘Terminator 5 – Sky Net Repents’.
I'm more inclined to think that if we ever do create artificial life (machines that think) they are more likely to be our friends than our enemies. Perhaps they would think of us as parents who created them and love us instead of seeing us as a threat?
When I referred to machines doing all our work for us, I didn’t mean intelligent ones. To use sentient machines in such a manner would be barbaric – basically slavery. I was thinking more on the lines of automated systems that carry out jobs like driving Taxis and Running the Country………………….just joking! What I mean is machines that make life easier for all of us.

Thanks again for a great post!

Beggars on our streets?
Posted: 7/19/2009 6:18:42 PM
For the defenders of the victims of poverty on our streets I will say this. Our government should do something about it- that’s why we pay taxes.

Of course we should be compassionate about those who are less well off but that does not mean that I should be harassed by vagrants while I try to enjoy my coffee at a sidewalk café or be accosted by a tramp sitting on front of an ATM as I attempt to withdraw my money.

In a civilised society the less well off should be catered for by the appropriate authorities. Furthermore those who are deemed to be defrauding the public and thus making life even more miserable for the genuinely needy should be arrested and dealt with a body such as CAB to recover any moneys deemed to be excessive earnings. In the right circumstances organised bands of beggars can make a surprisingly lucrative living.

'Of all the would-be fathers who came and went over the years, this thing, this machine was the only one who measured up. In an insane world, it was the sanest choice. ':- Sarah Connor's (Terminator 2)
This is my favorite quote from Terminator two. Sarah describes how the Terminator would never come home drunk, would never be abusive and would always be there for John. He also was a dab hand at jumpstarting cars and opening cars incidentally!
Mir your answer was really entertaining, I enjoyed reading it very much; clearly you are a Terminator fan as am I. What I find interesting about it that it forces us to ask ourselves what makes us unique as humans. What we define as being a person? One notion proposed is a person is free to make choices, to have possibilities. For the Terminators there was only their mission, which they were not free to deviate from. Once completed their reason to exist ceases, unless they are reprogrammed. In lots of ways we are programmed, but we can choose to change that programming if we so choose. I think we are a long way from successfully creating AI but I think its definitely on the way- we better watch out……………….smile!
Mir apparently artificial sperm is real see

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/uk/article685515.ece

It does raise all sorts of ethical questions I believe similar to that of cloning etc.

Lastly I love technology – it’s a tool. How we use it is the question. Speaking on forums is not all that different from writing letters into the newspaper for example. Technology makes life more convenient, I'm dying for the day that machines can do all our work for us so we can get on doing more interesting things with our time.

I love this form of communication on the forums , it’s fun. We are simply writing letters electronically and delivering them electronically, but the basic action is the same as its always been. Instead of POF they should call the site POL (plenty of letters.com).

Back in the 70's the book that was all the rage was 'Chariots of the Gods'. Written by Eric Von Daniken it was a load of nonsence about aliens having visited us and doing things like building the pyramids.................ugh!

The aliens I believe are us, and we will begin by building intelligent machines ..............let's hope they are not like Sky Net in the film Terminator!

Artificial Sperm ?
Posted: 7/14/2009 5:24:39 PM
I read an article last Sunday reporting apparently that artificial sperm is finally a possibility; so the implications.

Is this a threat to manhood?

Are we to become reproductively obsolete?

Should we consider inventing artificial wombs to counter the balance of power?

Would taking the reproductive process out of the human body in some way emancipate us all, or render us emotionally impotent (excuse the pun).

If we are to use artificial sperm, why not go the whole hog and allow cloning?

Do we need to reconsider what being human really means?

The Winter Solstice
Category: Writing and Poetry

Dated.Dec. 22. 07. 7a.m.
My dearest Sweetheart,
You left this morning and I didn’t say good bye, but I felt your tender kiss! I was awake. I pretended to sleep, its better that way. Better for me, because what I have to tell is too difficult to say to your beautiful face.
I thought of saying something poetic like ‘Now is the winter of my discontent’, but it seems so puerile. You have been so patient with me Robert, and all I can offer in return- is my pretence; being for you, whatever it is, that you want me to be.
Today is Dec 22; the date on which we first met all those years ago. Do you remember Robert? We sat on that wall for hours looking up at the moon together. We were so young and I so drunk. You saved me that night. I never forgot how you whisked me away from that dreadful party, when everyone else left me lying there in my own vomit; you were my handsome knight, who took me in a taxi home. You were my hero. You nestled me in your arms for hours by the wall in front of that house, because I needed you.
I wanted to leave that night Robert, but you gave me a reason to stay. You were- you are my Tristan, and we sipped from the cup. I dammed you so many times for doing that to me. Did you ever know? Did I, until this moment? Things we need to know, things we need to tell each other, if only , if only ; I'm tired of …………….if only.
Yes today is Dec 22 - The Winter Solstice, and like the sun, my heart is at its farthest point from your world. If it were not for you Robert, this would be so much easier.
Believe me I have tried, through my regret to spare you this sorrow; but I know you will eventually understand, the right in this wrong that I must inflict on you.
Remember that sunset in Crete? We were together - just you and I, sitting on the silent sand; waves lapping at our bare feet, your arms embracing me. The air was warm and dry. You asked me to marry you.
I said: Be careful what you ask for, you just might get it.
You laughed and said: I have everything I want, right here.
Did you know then, what everything really meant? Do you still want everything?
I remember the sun that evening, a gargantuan medallion, sinking beneath the sea, and with it sank my expectation. Against my sentient being, I replied: So be it.
You were so delirious with joy, my indifference escaped you. I was, as remote as the lonely sun is today, as you were drunk on the potion. For a time I was too Robert, but inevitably the concoction transformed.
Like a tree that stretches from hell to heaven, my roots have slowly carried the poison into the branches of your joy. I've seen your delight gradually wither each time you look at me.
How can she tell my Tristan that the sails are black when she knows they are white? I know how easy it was for her to take you from me. I have only myself to blame. So much to say, so late to say it! I am not doing you wrong Robert; I am doing what I should have done a very long time ago.
I know now, that you are everything. I know that you belong to her. Know that where I now choose to go, is where I've always been.
The love I gave you, as remote as the Solstice Sun, was none the less in earnest sincerity.
Good bye my love.
Isabelle.

DEATH TO THE TYRANT

Death to the tyrant, we’ll pull out his nails,
We’ll round up his cronies and f*ck ‘em in gaol.
His wife and his spawn will be put to the test,
Their lives will depend on the word of the rest.

For the crimes he’s committed, we’ll blacken his name,
His head on a spike and it won’t be in vain.
Justice is coming, to startle the pig,
He’ll swing from the gallows as we dance a jig.

Revenge is our engine and blood is our fuel,
This tyrant, this despot who thinks you’re a fool,
He’ll wake up one morning, knee deep in his shit,
You know he deserves it, down to the last bit.

Who will defend him, this cretin from hell?
Why the asses that made him and sold you his spell.
For these f*cks were planning a day of delight,
We’ll boil them in oil and take joy in their plight!

So death to the tyrant and all he conveys,
This cretin, this Mongol, has seen his last day!

I'm going to stick my neck out here.I am proud to be Irish.
Everything good that has developed in this country since the foundation of the state has been the result of secular influence. Everything bad that has held the personal freedom of Irish people back in this country has been the result of Catholic influence. Before you attack me for making generalizations, I will put my hand up. I am expressing my feelings on this matter.
Why this Government hadn’t the guts to abolish the existing blasphemy laws instead of amending them is beyond me. I suspect they are trying to keep their options open lest we return to a more repressive society down the line as we endured in the past under the Catholic Yoke.
Irish Republic – yes.

Foreigners
Posted: 7/8/2009 6:46:56 PM

When you came to Ireland did you arrive with no education, no language and only pennies in your pocket because you were running from a war or economic curruption? Because this is why foreign beggers are on the streets, you think they come with the plan to beg for an ideal career?

djdruid You are naïve. The streets of Dublin are full of foreign gypsies who persistently pester people for money. Unfortunately what they are doing is not illegal. We have institutions that take care of refugees, providing them with housing and welfare payments. I for one resent the fact that I have to contend with beggars every time I visit an ATM machine or try to enjoy a coffee at a sidewalk café.
I have a problem with strangers soliciting money from me on the street. The practice should be outlawed.

Beggars on the street irritate me, it should be an offence to solicit money on the street but apparently it isn’t. At the height of our prosperity as a nation Government couldn’t or wouldn’t deal with this menace. Now that the country is facing bankruptcy (and be in no doubt about that), are we to see even more beggars harassing us and visitors alike?

Facetious? I think that word is unfair to use in this context. I expect that as a hairdresser you are privy to a lot of gossip as am I in my line of work. I am aware that when listening to reports by these people that their testimonies are to be taken with some scepticism. From reports that I have gathered I may claim that most fathers act in a totally responsible fashion and it’s the mothers who have custody who frustrate their efforts- but there again I treat such information with a healthy degree of scepticism .
It’s a rainy Sunday afternoon and therefore I have time on my hands to give this some thought. It’s an important issue that you have raised.

Going back to the original question as to whether the idea of a mother abandoning her kids is more shocking than a father- I would have to say no. The question carries with it an underlying assumption that mothers are more suited to parenthood than fathers and therefore their betrayal of children is somehow worse. I mean no offence and don’t want to start a fight, I just think that too many assumptions are made about men’s inherent ability to care for children and often there is an unspoken prejudice against them especially in the courts.
