The Happiness Project
Posted: 11/23/2009 6:56:18 PM
What exactly does this project involve? Why do you want to be happy?

I don't think happiness is a feeling you can force upon yourself or others by thinking good thoughts or saying nice things.

If you do a few good deeds, you may feel happier. Some research shows that giving causes the brain to release the same type of endorphins runners feel who get a runners high.

Is Faith a dirty word? Not Religion..

Faith can relate to anything. I think it is the act of trusting and believing in another. Faith is believing where we cannot see. (Tennyson)

Waxing or Shaving?

I am concerned by the number of family doctors treating psychiatric disorders. IMO --- a specialist, psychiatrist or neurologist, should be prescribing the big guns.

I suspect that there is a shortage of this type of professional and therefore, the wait lists to see one is a couple of hundred years.

^I understand what you are saying.

And you know that there is research out there that says that people who were exposed to many germs in their childhoods actually have stronger immune systems than those who grew up in super clean homes.

Telephones - the voice of germs - streaming right into your mouths.

Toughen up people! Your antibacterial soap and this and that is screwing with bacteria. Now, we have resistant strains making their ways into our bodies.

Well, well, well. And now the other half knows how it feels. LOL

For years men have gone on about women and their bodies. Women usually have not engaged in public dialogues about how they feel about men and their bodies.

Is there a thread called "Do woman prefer pencil thin, muscular or average men around?" No!!!

Do women make posts about men who have smaller - - -? No!

And would a man admit to having smaller ---- Interesting, isn't it?

Well, what goes around comes around.

Good thread, op!

Perhaps, Mother Nature as a vision, too. And it is not all about us or beautiful BC.

I believe that forces work toward balance and that the planet is so screwed-up by environmental toxins that anything is possible.

However, the bottom line is that you do not fcuk, French Connection United Kingdom, with Mother Nature. I like Mother Nature because she is like a woman who has been walked all over and saying screw you, people.

We do deserve global warming. We messed with the natural order of things.

So suck it up, buttercup and hopefully that big gulp inward is not toxic.

H1N1 vaccine. Are you getting a shot?

I am not personally rushing into getting the vaccine --- still. It was rushed. Maybe it is not good for people like me with over efficient immune systems, who are predisposed to autoimmune diseases and have at least one autoimmune disease.

H1N1 vaccine. Are you getting a shot?
Posted: 11/17/2009 9:15:54 PM
I heard that 1 in 5 Canadians are vaccinated. I only know of one person who has been vaccinated and I come in contact with 100's of people daily. However, I do not ask them if they have been vaccinated. Still, it is doubtful.

In BC, 5 more people died of H1N1 and, most likely, other complications, this week.

I am one of the last who will be eligible for the vaccine and since everyone else will be vaccinated, I guess I will just opt out.

Canadian Olympic team outfits or costumes?

Okay, we are talking about 2010 now. I am not big on the strange little mascots and the melted big medals, but I do not mind the outfits, but I have not studied them closely. I like the sweater, which is slightly controversial because it is a First Nations People design and the First Nations People were not involved in the design of this sweater.

I do not have paraskavedekatriaphobia. Friday the 13th comes and goes and I hardly take notice. If you do have this phobia, the good thing is that there are not a lot of Friday the 13ths. The other good thing is that Friday 13th is just a day but I guess if the phobia has its hands on you, you have to shake it off.

Have you ever noticed that some people have all the bad things happen to them?
Posted: 11/15/2009 9:30:48 PM
Yes, or so they say. And it seems like they live from one disaster to the next, but I am not sure because I am just listening to what they say.

Some people have major tragedy in their lives and somehow become stronger and wiser because of it, while others go on from crisis to crisis. I am inspired by the former and suspicious of the later.

^OP - don't worry about it. I noticed that you wrote that 911 was an act of intolerance on a grand scale.

In retrospect, tolerance and intolerance is a term that needs to be defined. There are some things that should not be tolerated and at other times we need to be tolerant, respectful of others.

I have read so much about Diana. She was my favorite royal. In fact, she was the only one I was ever interested in.

I notice that William and Harry are young men now and getting ready for marriage. I see that Charles is in a lasting relationship with his Rotti, Camilla. However, I think the death of Diana was extremely tragic. However, life goes on.

You and your IDEALS....do you stuggle with them?
Posted: 11/14/2009 1:58:46 PM
Interesting thread! I think that there is an assumption that if you are X, you cannot be happy. Some assume that people who are desperately poor, people who abuse drugs and alcohol, people are without the right moral fiber, people who are different, and so on, cannot be possibly happy.

It is liberating when you allow yourself to be different and not really worry about what others think. I suspect people have many odd notions about me because I live with a few large dogs in the city. It is different. A lot of people say that it looks like hard work. To me it is a labour of love.

Judgemental people

^Wow --- good answer.

I suppose that when people say judgmental they mean looking for faults. And I suppose it is more likely to happen when a person compares themselves with others.

However, I am not sure this is always the cases. Take the Olympics and the events that will be judged, like figure skating. I think the judges are looking for skill, although granted if skaters slip up they will be faulted.

^Thanks W and G! You have confirmed what I have suspected. A lot of people are informally assessing/evaluating the characteristics of others. It is not to say that people are good or bad or doomed to eternity in Hell, but to say where people fit in our lives and in the world, according to our subjective experiences.

Judgmental people always point out that they are not judging you, but they are. In fact, aren't we all making assessment of others. I do not mean in black and white or good and bad terms but just forming opinions.

What exactly is a judgmental person? Is this some one who judges you in terms of worth-- loser or winner?

Did you get a sign?
Posted: 11/12/2009 9:15:06 PM
1) have you ever asked for a sign when you needed guidance?

Nothing is coming to mind at the moment. This does not mean I have not received a sign.

2) did you receive a sign when you asked? (or wonder if a sign was given but you failed to see it)?

It is very possible that I have received signs, but cannot interpret them.

3) did your receive a sign even when you had not asked for one?

Maybe ----- I know that I am very intuitive and that in real life people often remark on my uncanny ability to see into others. However, I am intuitive not a sign reader.

I applaud all of you who are getting the vaccine because you work in health care. It is the socially responsible thing to do, despite the risks.

Me -- I am still waiting for the vaccine to come to my group. While I work with the public in a public setting, we seem to be a hardy lot because I have not noticed any cases of confirmed swine flu.

H1N1 vaccine. Are you getting a shot?
Posted: 11/9/2009 9:01:54 PM
You know if you have the chance to get the shot and dont, I think you are really taking a chance. Listen to what the people who have it are saying. It sounds nasty.

Also, don't you think when you get the vaccine you do it for other people too? Because none of us want to be carriers of a flu that can be potentially deadly, do we?

As for conspiracy theories, I think people have better things to do with their time.

However, I understand that some people may be concerned because the vaccine was a rush job. This is what bugs me. I suppose we have to take chances at times and trust in the greater good.

Jaws and other behaviour-altering movies.
Posted: 11/9/2009 8:56:51 PM
I think you had to Easy Rider when it came out to be influenced by it. I saw it 3 years ago because a friend said I would enjoy it but I found it deadly.

I saw all the horror movies - the Exorcist, Damian, Night of the Living Dead ---- and I have concluded that the real horror shows are more realistic such as The Pianist.

One movie I watched at least 5 times was Francis --- the Francis Farmer story. I am not sure why that one touched me.

I really like "Tarnation" a low budget film made by an artistic genius on i movie.

Classics like 'To Kill a Mockingbird" with Gregory Peck endure the test of time.

I also like movies about authors so Truman, The Hours, Sylvia, and The Bell Jar are amongst my favourites. In fact, biographies often make the best movie.

Gone to the Dogs
Posted: 11/9/2009 8:41:35 PM
Sadly, I do not think the British Bulldog is meant to be. For one thing, they have such large heads now that they are all born by cesarean. Through selective breeding (eugenics), this breed now would be non-existent because the mother bulldogs would die in labour.

The breed, which is really in vogue now, has a multitude of health problems. Dogs with pushed in faces are more apt to have breathing problems. They have wrinkled skin with large folds --- under those folds there are often skin problems -- much like shar peis. The British bulldog moves really slowly. They are the slowest dogs I can think of. Yet, they have the "look" and are very popular.

Crossbreeds tend to be healthier. A person could rescue a lab cross and not spend a lot on vet bills. A lab cross is a better gamble in terms of upkeep than a bulldog.

Shiftwork

Well, from my experience, when most people go off their meds and need hospitalization, their mania/delusions/narcissistic tendencies tend to keep them up at night and keep us busy. No sleep for the weary.

How do you sleep, Jane?

Usually, I just crash and fall into a deep sleep but am not like the people you describe in the above paragraph.

As I said, I really have never worked a shift in my life. However, I do work quite late into the evening at times and I definitely work a lot of 12 hour days. It is a lifestyle almost.

Gone to the Dogs
Posted: 11/9/2009 8:05:34 PM
I have 4 dogs right now - 2 weims, a pointer and springer. Tomorrow my springer will be 13. Dogs are wonderful pets but they are a lifestyle. You have to walk them regularly and be committed to them for their lifetimes. The walking part is really good for you but some people cannot stand walking in the rain.

The key may be in finding a breed you are compatible with. There are online tests that can guide your selection. Try and rescue rather than buy a puppy because there are too many dogs without homes. There really is no need for people to breed dogs at this point in time.

I had a clinic experience the other day. What a waste of time!! I thought they would be glad to see me since I did not have the flu but no ---- I am not sure what they do at those clinics or what the doctors roles are there but it really is hit and miss.

Sometimes, I prefer to go to the clinic because my GP only works 4 hours a week.

I think those doctors who work at clinics like it. They have little overhead and little overtime. They go in put in their hours and go home. I would happy to be wrong about this and I know they are not all like this.

Incentives needed to put in place to attract doctors back into family practice again.

Assisted suicide - the right to die with dignity
Posted: 11/5/2009 8:59:42 PM
Live and let go. I mean we are all going to die anyway. What is wrong if people who have no quality of life speed up the exit process? If a person is doomed to days of suffering until death, then we should let them go if that is their wish. On the other hand, if they stick around to the bitter end, I believe they still die with dignity.

I object more to this dignity concept than assist suicide. People who are not abled bodied still have dignity.

Flu shots...
Posted: 11/3/2009 7:58:18 PM
I sort of agree that people in certain professions have a responsibility to get the vaccine. I would feel like crap if I gave someone H1N1 and they went through Hell.

The government says that the manufacturer of the vaccine is having trouble coming up with the demand for the vaccine. They are barely able to get the vaccine into the most vulnerable peoples arms. It is troubling.

I don't think you can for anyone to get the H1N1 vaccine. They need to convince certain groups of people that it is the socially responsible thing to do. I guess they cannot do this until they get more of the juice.
