POF is slow
Posted:
11/16/2009 5:55:33 PM
If you have slow loading of web pages on POF and all other sites work fine , then the problem is either a DNS problem or a MTU setting for your connection.
( MTU is maximum transmissible units - data packet size )
( DNS is domain name server - looks up web site addresses )
firstly , ensure that you enable cookies for POF.
How are you connected to the internet ? , cable ? , ADSL ?
Since you are using Windows XP , download and run TCP Otimizer and on the main page , move the connection speed slider to maximum and then in the section below set the MTU to 1464 for ADSL or 1500 for a cable connection.
TCP Optimizer
http://www.speedguide.net/downloads.php
If the above doesn't fix the problem , then you will need to ask your ISP about how to check and set your DNS settings .

Your photo looks very clear to me.
If you uploaded the image from a CD , then what size was it ? , it is best to upload images that are less than 500 x 400 otherwise they may become distorted .
Normally studio quality photos are about the size of 2500 x 2000 , so it is best to use a photo editing application like IrfanView to crop and resize the image before you upload them.

Yeah , this happens to a lot of people all the time everywhere , what you have described is that you are a standby date .
These women have made a standby date with you , if nothing better comes up in between , then they go on the date with you , otherwise if they have a better offer of fun/drinks/hens night .... etc , then they take that date.

missing ram?
Posted:
10/14/2009 12:03:42 AM
RAM slots should be populated consecutivly unless your going for dual channel thats true, but in this instance as the sticks are not matching size dual channel configuration will not work no matter what slots they ocupy.
So on that bases contigious bank ocupation is best, ie bank 0 > bank 1 > bank 2 > bank 3 etc.
No , not necessary , sometimes with mismatching Ram manufacturer/brand or size , the only way to get them to work is to try different Ram slots.
At times , I have had to put Ram sticks in bank 0 and then in the last bank or even leaving bank1 and bank 2 empty.
The last machine that I added Ram into with mis-matching manufacturer/brand was for DDR Ram and I had to place the sticks in bank 0 and bank 3 .
If the Ram sticks are the same type , eg SDRam , DDR , DDR2 but different manufacturer/brand , then you may have incompatibilities , so if at first the extra Ram doesn't get recognized by the BIOS , then you start swapping the Ram in and out of the Ram slots in an attempt to get it to work , sometimes it works , sometimes it doesn't .
And since the OP has not said what type of Ram he is using , then people can only give generic answers to his question.

missing ram?
Posted:
10/13/2009 10:04:16 PM
ive fitted 1.5 gig of ram on my pc, 1g in slot 1 and .5 in slot 2. ive ran the o/s which is xp and properties and says only 1gig.
i thought i would run cupid and see whats happening and its recognised the both slots so says i have 1.5 of ram.
You haven't said anything about the specs of your PC , the age , the type of Ram that the mobo takes or even how many Ram slots it has.
Anyway , if CupID recognizes the full 1.5 Gb of Ram , then you will need to insert the ram sticks in bank 0 and bank 3 , leaving bank 2 empty , and if that doesn't work , then put the second stick in the next Ram slot and so on until you get the Ram recognized by the BIOS.
So the configuration will be the 1 Gb in bank 0 and the 512 Mb stick in any of the other slots , leaving bank 2 empty.
Sometimes with mismatching sticks of Ram you may need to put one stick in bank 0 and the other in the last Ram bank.
In most cases , it won't matter if the Ram sticks are of different bus speeds , all Ram sticks are backward compatible and what will happen is that the faster Ram stick will run at the same speed as the slower Ram stick.

Help with buying RAM

Get your friend to run the CupID application to find out exactly the make and model number of the mobo and then do a google search for the mobo's make and number.
Different brands of mobos can change the number of Ram slots , so you need to find out exactly what mobo it is.
<div class='quote'>
http://www.dealtime.com/xPF-Ecs-ECS-741GX-M-Socket-A-SIS-DDR333-Motherboard
In your original post you said that the mobo had 5 memory slots , the mobo you quoted above has only 2 memory slots , but it does take 2 Gb of DDR Ram .

Help with buying RAM
Posted:

If he buys 1 Gb RAM, will the motherboard see it all, or will it only pick up the extra 256 Mb?
Nope , if the maximum Ram capacity of the mobo is 512 Mb , then it will only detect , use and display 512 Mb of Ram , so it's a waste of time and money to get 1 Gb.
If the mobo can only take 512 Mb of Ram , then it's a fairly old mobo , so you will need to find out exactly what Ram sticks it can take , because it sounds like it may use 168 pin SDRam instead of 184 pin DDR Ram or DDR2 Ram.
Download and run CpuID to find out exactly what type of Ram the mobo is using.
http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php
When buying the Ram , you can use Ram with a faster bus speed than what you have in the existing mobo because it will be backward compatible , BUT , it needs to be the same TYPE of Ram.

PC Problems, I can't seem to fix the problem
Posted:

I have this bizarre problem with my PC. I have Windows XP and when ever I log on to my desktop I get logged out right away.
What do you mean when you say that you "get logged out" ?
Do you get a blank white screen or do you get taken back to the login screen ?
If you get a blank white screen , then you have got the Active Desktop enabled possibly by a some malware and it was removed by your anti spyware application and it left an empty /blank desktop.
It this is the problem , then it is easy to fix.

Useless tenants

Why get involved with these whack jobs ??????
Couldn't you just ignore them and stop meddling in their lives , these people are adults and they are responsible for the own lives , if they stuff up , then it's their problem not yours.
Unless they are causing noise or any other anti social behavior problems then you can't do anything about them , if they were causing problems for the you and the other tenants then you can get the landlord or other people involved.
I have lived in quite a few guest houses and has seen quite a lot of whack jobs in those places and the best thing to do is to don't become involved with them and don't try to run their lives for them.
You can be friendly enough to say hello and for some casual talk , but never drink with them or become a bleeding heart to them by trying to to change their lives because they will take you for all you have got , they will end up biting you for money , citgarettes , drinks and food.
From what you have said , these whack jobs could be speed freaks , so don't trust them.
And if these whack jobs irk you too much , then move some place else.

Linux on IBM PC's?
Posted:
9/22/2009 12:34:05 AM
I HAVE looked online A LOT trying to find linux that works on my IBM LABELED machines (not the vague 'PC's' you seem to think I meant). I have read of a bunch of Linux versions that will work MOSTLY on the T40's and T60's, but they always require modifications that I don't understand how to make,
There are two problems that you face with the IBM machines :
1) low specs on the IBM machines
2) Linux hardware compatibility.
You will need to take an inventory of the various machines to obtain the specs for each component of CPU , Ram , graphics card and HDD to see if they can run linux , as well as finding out about each component chipset for all the peripheral components such as motherboard , graphics card , network card , sound card , controller cards.
Being IBM machines , they could contain non standard proprietary hardware components that are not compatible with linux , particularly if they are the older IBM computers.
Linux is quite different to Ms Windows in that Linux is very hardware dependent and that quite a lot of hardware manufacturers don't provide linux drivers for their hardware.
Now days , quite a lot of the newer hardware is supported by linux , but if the hardware is older than say 5 years or that they are proprietry hardware , then perhaps you may have problems with hardware compatibility.
Here is one web page that gives a list of Linux compatiable hardware , it is not up to date , but it will give you an idea of searching for web pages that has linux hardware compatibility lists.
http://tldp.org/HOWTO/Hardware-HOWTO/
( do a google search on "linux hardware compatibility list" )

Linux on IBM PC's?
Posted:

Without knowing the spec of the IBMs , it would be better for you to find out about the minimum requirements needed for most linux distros.
Nowdays , with most recent linux GUI based installs , you will need the minimum of P3 800 Mhz , 256 Mb of Ram and a 8 mb graphics card and a bootable CD ROM drive ,
For lower spec machines you can do a text based install , but you will not have any GUIs to use.
I run Fedora Core 5 on a P3 1Ghz machine with 512 Mb of Ram and a 128 Mb graphics card and it is quite fast.

I kept getting a message to download 3.5.2 popping up in the corner.
That is because you have got the "Automatically Check For Updates" checked in Tools .... Options ... Advanced Tab .... Update Tab.
I can't see how people have problems with FF , it is a very configurable web browser with a lot of settings to play around with.
To see all the settings that you can manually change. just type in the address bar

Firefox 3.5.2 is better than FF3 and FF2 .
FF3.5 loads web pages faster then FF2 and quite a lot quicker than FF3.
FF3.5.2 also fixes some of the memory leaks that has happened in all versions of FF.
When you download FF 3.5 , it will be build 3.5.1 , once you install it , upgrade immediately to FF 3.5.2 to stop the memory leaks.

A fully working desktop suddenly stops working and now cannot install operating system..Help please.
Posted:
8/30/2009 8:22:13 AM
I got it then get message no signal and it will not allow me to do anything. Xp disc 1 is in machine and I cannot get it out?
No signal could mean that either the graphics card has died or something wrong with the monitor cable .
To do a quick check , un-plug the computer from the power switch , wait 30 seconds or so , and then plug the power back in and hit the start button , AND LISTEN TO THE START UP SEQUENCE , if hear a SINGLE BEEP for the Power On Self Test ( POST) then the system is alright , but if you get a series of beeps or no beeps at all then you will need to either check the power supply unit (PSU) , the graphics card , monitor cable (by wiggling it around).
If you get a series of beeps , post back the number and sequence of them and people may be able to tell you what the problem could be.
To manually open the CD/DVD drive , locate the small on the front of the drive and with a very long thin wire/pin , insert it into the hole and press it in until you hear a click and this will open the tray.

Help! Low disk space

I keep getting very low on disk space even though I do a disk cleanup but doesn't seem to help. I have even tried to go to add/removal programs and it won't let me uninstall certain things that says used rarely because i don't have enough disk space.
Can't really give you much advice unless you tell people what operating system you are using.
Are you using Windows XP or Vista ?

The best thing to do is to resize your pictures before you upload them to POF.
Don't rely on POF to re-size the pictures for you because they will come out distorted or crappy.
It is best to re-size your pictures to something like 350x250 or any size under 500x400.
If you haven't got a photo editing program , then use a freeware application called IrfanView , it works really good.

My computer's CD player.....
Posted:
7/31/2009 1:08:46 AM
What OS are you using ?
Does the CD drive get detected and does it show up in Control Panel .... System ...... Hardware Tab ...... Device Manager Button
It it doesn't show up in the Device Manager ,then you will need to re-detect the CD drive by highlighing the top of the device tree where your computer name is and then from the Action menu select "Scan For New Hardware" so the system does a hardware scan and re-detects the CD drive.
Never spray any liquids into the CD tray , clean it by blowing out the dust.
You could also try re-booting the system first to see if that helps.

SDHC CARDS
Posted:

You will need to check to see if your Samsung phone actually takes a micro SDHC card , it may only take a micro SD card.
I have a Samsung A711 and it only takes SD cards and I have a 2 Gb card in it and I have no problems with it.
Also , when the card is inserted , it should click into place , so check to see if the card is inserted and seated properly.

What DoI Do Next?WinXP Issues

My Dell Inspiron laptop is so slow, I don't know whether to retire it-its 4-5 years old, and so slow, its ridiculous. I get the hourglass. error pages on IE, just plain nothing or frozen screens/sites way too much.
info. I already clear the caches and do disk cleanup..
What do you mean by disk cleanup ?
Do you mean you have used the Disk Clean Up utility or the Defrag Utility ?
If you have only done a Disk Clean Up , then you should do a hard drive Defrag to consolidate all the data into contigious blocks.
Before you do a defrag , remove all old unwanted files , empty the Recycle bin , clear all browser and email caches , run a spyware utility like AdaWare / Spybot Search & Destroy and then disable your screen saver and your anti virus program.
Also once you do a defrag . , in the Run box type msconfig.exe and then open up the program and click on the Start Up tab and uncheck any obvious programs that you don't want to run on start up , this will stop a lot of useless/unwanted programs running in the background and slowing your machine down.
If those steps don't fix the problem , then you may need to have a look at your internet connection and your internet system settings.
If you are doing a lot of photo/video editing , then I would suggest upgrading to a new computer that has a lot of memory ( 3 Gb ) and a Quad core CPU.

Really random stupid question but i'm serious... I'm a partylite consultant who HATES windows... although my friend working for microsoft who COMPLETLY HATES vista actually upgraded to win 7 and loves it... but back to my main topic,
WIth partylite i can only log into my Http://my.partylite.com page from IE...
You should be OK , the web site requires FireFox 2.0 or higher , and most of the recent linux distros have FF 2 or higher. ( Fedora 11 has ver 3.5 )
Most Linux distros have other web browsers like Konqueror , Epiphany , Chrome and a few others that will probably be able to access the web site.
With word processing / spreadsheets/ ... etc , the linux equivalent is Open Office and you can save the documents in most Windows formats.

Ive been using redhat for 10 years now and I love it. I tried ubuntu for a while and it took less resources to run but it didnt give me as much freedom to do what I wanted so I went back to fedora.
If you prefer RH , then you should have a look at CentOS , it is an unbranded RH distro and is an enterprise distro that gets directly incorporated into RH and it is very stable.
The latest CentOS release is ver 5.3

Possible to fix the bad quality of upload photos?

lol my cell phone pics were/are originally 160 x 120.. I guess thats why they are getting so distorted.
If you have a 2 Mp camera on your cell phone , set the photo size to 640 x 480 or 800 x 600 and after you take the pics , reduce the size of the pics to half their original size by using a photo editor like IrfanView.

Resize the photos in a photo editor like IrfanView to no more than 400 x 300 , save them as a *.jpg file and you shouldn't have any problems.
( Resize the photos by preserving the original aspect ratio to prevent any distortion )

Windows XP gets new lease on life again.
Posted:

I made the mistake of buying a HP Mini Note with Vista basic. With one Gig of ram, if takes about 5 min. to boot, and runs slow. I think I can ditch the OS and get XP though.
If you intend on upgrading to Win 7 , then it would be better to stick with Vista because there is no upgrade path from XP to Win 7.
If you have XP installed , then you will need to either buy a new full Win 7 retail/oem version for the XP --> Win 7 upgrade or buy a upgrade version of Vista to upgrade XP --> Vista and then buy another upgrade for the Vista --> Win 7 upgrade.
For Vista to run happy , you will need at least 2 Gb of Ram and since you have a notebook , then try and upgrade to 3 Gb of Ram.
Remember , with notebooks , your video card shares the Ram , so while you have 1 Gb of Ram , in actual fact , you have a lot less Ram because the video card uses part of the Ram.
