That's an excellent point. You don't know if someone likes to read the backs of cereal boxes or War & Peace.

Review my profile please

Just one suggestion: zap the job info. It's unlikely that anyone's really interested in the details of your day job (e.g., job title, name of company, etc.) The stuff about your love of painting is good. Go with that. =)

Facetiousness aside, you should hit on the things that make you "dashing" and "charming" and not simply talk about your non-boring day job. Does it really matter what job you have only that you have a job? Some people might find the comment "I'm not just crunching numbers at my desk all day" a little offensive. Unless you're a brain surgeon or rock star, what does your job title have to do with anything?

The second sentence is good.

The third sentence is problematic. Specifically, the phrase "I don't care if you are or not, as long as you don't hassle me about it" is something that a teenager would say.

Too long?
Posted: 7/8/2009 2:01:30 PM
It's not long at all. You can fit it on a single screen (my laptop, for example). I do think that a longer than average profile is better than a couple of sentences that don't convey any bit of one's personality or sense of humor.

Can I get some feedback?

I like the quote! It definitely beats the usual "Loves to laugh" or "Scylla looking for her Charybdis" titles. I can never think of a title or subject line, so I'll type something from whatever songs in play at the time.

Hi Ari,

Here are my $0.02:

I like your profile because I think part of your personality comes through. One thing that I wondered about was this line:

I am 110% girl in every sense of the word. If I might break a nail or get dirty, odds are I'm not doing it. But if that is what you are into I'll be there at the finish line with a cold drink, and a big hug. I'll be your biggest fan cheering you on all the way. I like a man to be a man.

Does that mean that someone (or something) might break your nail or make you dirty? It didn't make sense. Your being a "girl in every sense of the word" might suggest qualities that are red flags, for the definition of "being a girl" is very subjective. For example, do you have a lot of unicorns on the wall? Is everything in your closet pink? Are you overly emotional, insecure or play down your intelligence? People interpret all sorts of things from a word or phrase, so be careful.

The same goes for the line "I like a man to be a man." What exactly does that mean? I'm a man and I have no clue. This might even reinforce the (possibly) erroneous impression that you're weak and the (male) reader of your profile is strong (or at least dominating).

Would love a profile review

Your profile has some duplicate things (e.g., independent) as a few redundancies (e.g., "open to trying new things", "pretty open minded","very easy going flexible person.") Just say it once. =)

You'll also want to check on your verb tenses. For example: "...hang gliding, snorkeling, golf, going on a cruise, swim with dolphins, rollerblade, learn Spanish..." should be written as "hang gliding, snorkeling, golfing, going on a cruise, swimming with dolphins, rollerblading, learning Spanish..."

Also, zap everything after "I'm looking for someone between the ages of 30-40..." because it tends to severely restrict what you're looking for. In other words, you've described yourself, this potential person, and what your relationship together would be like. You -might- be looking for exactly what you specified in your profile, however, you still need to catch someone's attention, and that's not an easy thing to do. You can cover this other stuff once you get to know the person and decide if he (or you) are compatible.

Just a couple of comments, Crazypeach.

LOL.

My thoughts exactly. The only people who can get away with this kind of thing are either 12 years old or republican congressmen.

Why Mislead
Posted: 6/27/2009 8:38:16 PM
I think you have to have thick skin; that is, assume that you'll probably be stood up or lied to unless proven otherwise. I'm not sure why people chicken out but they do. Perhaps it's just the "disposable" world we live in that anything (i.e., people) can be jettisoned away without warning or notice.

Try not to romanticize this guy or the brief friendship you had. Whatever his excuse (deportation, arrested, spontaneous combustion), he left you floating out there. And that's not a friend.

Like someone has said, it's better than you found out his real (inconsiderate) nature sooner rather than later.

Best Certification
Posted: 6/18/2009 7:14:34 PM
Experience matters far more than a cert. Certs don't hurt and may even open a few doors, but gone are the days when a cert guaranteed a well-paying job (think: Novell CNE circa 1993).

Finding a single exam, vendor neutral cert would be a good start, especially if you already work with computer support. Getting some experience with Linux would be a good idea since you can get it for free and configure a small network a la VMs or an old desktop. Microsoft is a popular option but they don't really give much away for free, at least when it comes to their OSes.

Broken heart or just plain Disapointment
Posted: 6/16/2009 2:26:15 PM
I think guys are far more intimidated by smart, intelligent women than anything else. They'll often belittle them or make crass or stupid comments. A close second are assertive women. A good test would be:

Q: "Did you know that Nietzsche did of syphilis?"
Correct answer is another John Cusack quote

Q: "Go get me a beer."
Correct answer "Only if you pass the bowl of beer nuts."

Python Programming
Posted: 6/12/2009 12:34:35 AM
A slight correction...

The jvm is just the runtime engine and could run whatever was compiled to machine-independent bytecode (although it's almost -always- from java source code). For example, you could compile FORTRAN to java bytecode and run it on the jvm, but that wouldn't give you a FORTRAN framework.

There's not a single "java framework" as much as a "java platform." What we do have are a lot of specialized java frameworks such as struts or java faces or spring. So I guess it's more a matter of semantics than anything else. (If you were talking about Microsoft technologies, they do indeed have a monolithic ".Net framework.")

JPython has gotten some props as has IronPython (Python on .Net). I don't think the choice of language is as important as what you were going to do with it. =)

Help a girl out!

Lesse...

I agree with what someone said that the pics are nice! As for the non-aesthetics, you might be sending out mixed signals. e.g., You mention movies in the "Interests" section and you say that "movies are great" in the the "About Me" section. However, in the "First Date" section you say "A movie is a big no." So which is it? Some guys might think that you want it both ways which is a red flag. (Not me, of course, because I'm perfect. )

Besides, what if your first date person said something like "my buddy works at the theater and can get us in for free to see [insert some really cool movie starting that really cool actor where stuff gets blow'd up] and everyone knows that it's sold out? (This is a hypothetical scenario since everyone knows they don't make good movies anymore.)

diabetic recipes

This is one of my favorites. It's low carb as well as diabetic-friendly. I forgot the site I snarfed it from (lowcarbfriends.com?) I don't bother with any whipped topping or pecans because it's pretty good as is. =)

Ingredients:

The "crust":

1 8 oz pkg cream cheese (I usually use the lite version)
1/4 C Splenda
1 egg
1 tsp almond extract (I use vanilla)

The "pie":

1 egg
2 egg whites
1 15 oz can pumpkin
2/3 C Splenda
1 C whipping cream or half and half
3 tsp pumpkin pie spice
1 tsp vanilla
½ tsp salt

How To Prepare:

Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
Spray bottom of pan pie pan or 8x8 glass pan. (I used an 8x8 metal pan)
Combine first 4 ingredients and mix well until smooth.
Spoon into pan to make bottom layer.
Beat eggs. Add remaining ingredients. Mix.
Pour over cream cheese layer

Bake at 400 degrees for 15 minutes.
Then lower oven temperature to 325 degrees.
Bake an additional 45 minutes.
Cool.
Top with Cool Whip or whipped cream.
Sprinkle with toasted chopped pecans.

How do you stop missing your ex because it's so hard...
Posted: 6/11/2009 3:33:20 PM
I think it's "time wounds all heels." =)

Apart from an inordinate amount of time or a massive head wound, there's nothing that will stop that feeling of loss, so you just have to find some way to manage it.

I always make sure to add "Unfinished Symphony" to whatever bouncy mix I listen to at the gym. Who wouldn't thought that a cowbell would sound so good? ("How can you have a day without a night?")
