GSP vs. Matt Hughes, UFC 65
Posted: 11/19/2006 4:29:24 PM
AWESOME performance by GSP, Canada's greatest...mostly unknown...athlete. Totally dominated Hughes every which way. Would gladly welcome a rematch, as I don't see much changing, and it gives me another opportunity to see the arrogant Hughes humbled, and hopefully Ko'd even worse this time. Wonder if he's embaressed now that he lost a fight to a Canadian...since we're such noted pu$$ies on the world stage you know. At least now Matt you can step away from the spotlight, and you finally make time for that country breakfast! Everyone in the bar I was at went nuts and stood up to watch the finish once GSP rocked him...well except the one Hughes fan in the place, lol! If they have a rematch in Montreal I may have to start saving some moolah...

crunkeith-How you can compare Angle to Jarrett, Steiner, and especially Nash is beyond me(though I do agree with you in that if I was TNA booker Steiner and Nash would no longer have jobs, and Jarrett would certainly not be my perenial champion).
However us hardcore wrestling geeks still think Kurt is amongst the best in ring workers in the business, and thus we will be going along for the ride hoping to see him in some more 5* matches. No Kurt isn't getting any younger, but with the lighter work load he just may be able to prolong his career. He is only 36ish I believe. Also, the precense of a major player in TNA just may draw more top notch wrestlers to TNA, free agents like Goldberg or Jericho, or even some WWE talent may decide to give it a try once their contracts expire(ala Christian).
I think it's funny that you say Kurt moving on is a good thing, cause WWE has done all they can with him. Well what about HHH!?!? The Big Show!?!? Plenty of other guys it could be argued as well have lasted long past their expire date in the WWE. I personally didn't think Angle was one of them. I was liking his new ECW tough guy, shooter gimick, but I will enjoy watching him go toe to toe with Samoa Joe among others even more.
I welcome the move by Kurt, and TNA's move to a better time starting in November...9pm thusdays I believe. They still aren't ready to compete with the WWE, but they are getting there. A couple more major players, and a 2hr show(a must IMO, cause TNA is forced to rush their angles sometimes with just a 1hr show), and they will be well on their way. I look forward to that day. Maybe then we can experience another wrestling boom, like 10 years ago when WWF and WCW were going toe to toe every monday night.

stayanddrown-I did totally forget about Pillar I must admit...he definitely has a shot at regualar duty if he is healthy. I really like the blueline depth...they can afford to move one or two as well to improve up front if need be.

As far as Peca goes...he is reportedly signed already. It is expected to be announced tomorrow that Peca has signed a one year 2.5 million dollar deal. Great addition IMO.

DJ Chaos-With regards to Gilbert Yvel...one word comes to mind, DIRTY. Or punk would be another. He is actually only 1-7-1 in Pride, but his one win was an impressive high kick KO of Gary Goodridge. He has one no contest in Pride for kicking Wanderlei Silva in the nads. All others he's lost, mostly cause he's not a well rounded fighter. He has great stand up, but his ground game sucks. Then he whines when things go to the ground and calls other fighters pu$$ies for not standing up and slugging with him. Dude, this is MMA, not kickboxing...why would they play to your strengths??? Duh! Then when the fight goes to the ground and it's supposed to be restarted in the middle of the ring(on the ground), he has refused to do so at times, saying why can't we have a stand up? He is also known for gouging Don Fryes eyes, and sucker punching a referee unconcious. He's a peice of crap and a whinny bi+ch IMO. If you don't like the rules of MMA, stick to kickboxing you big cry baby. Overall he has a 28-12 record btw, so an elite fighter he's not.

About Frank Shamrocks and Bas Ruttens "sissy slap match"...as I have stated before, the rules in Pancrase at that time were NOT full MMA rules, and one of the big differences is that you were not allowed to throw hand stikes with a closed fist while standing, or to the head while on the ground. So perhaps that's why you would refer to their fight as a "sissy slap fest", cause those were the rules then, and palm strikes were common since you couldn't punch a guy except to the body while he was on the ground I believe.

And yes Royce was amazing back in the day, no doubt. For his time he was very impressive, and I credit him a LOT for bringing MMA to north america, and making people stand up and take notice of the importance of submissions and ground fighting. However just cause he was the first big name doesn't mean he was the best. He may go down as one of the most well known, maybe even THE most well known, but he's definitely not the best ever in this sport, not even close. Even if it was Royce of 10 years ago he still does not measure up to the top fighters in this sport all time IMO, in terms of ability I mean. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions though...

I agree Gage that pound for pound F.Shamrock is one of the best. I like him much more then his loudmouth brother. That being said, he was not undefeated, nor is he retired. He is undefeated in the UFC, and likely will stay that way since he hates Dana Whites guts and is unlikely to come back. He has fought rarely since he left the UFC, though he is expected to fight again this year. Since he came back after he retired in the UFC, he has been critisized for not facing the best competition. Anyway, here is his entire MMA record(for what it's worth the pancrase fights had slightly different rules then a full MMA fight, including using only open hands when striking and rope breaks when caught in a submission):

As far as Igor Vovchanchyn goes...he was a wrecking machine about 5 or 6 years ago, and one of the top heavyweights in the world, but was never Pride champion. He is still an allright fighter, but no longer a top guy. Kind of one dimensional. Maybe you're confusing him with Fedor Emelianenko, who is the current Pride heavyweight champion. Both might also be confused as Russian(Igor is from the Ukraine).

With regards to Liddell/Silva...sure Belfort beat Silva...8 years ago. Both are different fighters today and Belfort would not be favoured in a rematch. BTW, Chuck beat Belfort by decision for whatever that's worth. However Liddell has lost to Quinton Jackson, whom Silva has beaten twice, so IMO common opponents and past fights mean nothing. Regardless of who wins I can't see how this fight will disappoint. Both guys like to slug and are rarely cautious. I think Wanderlei especially will force the fight and try to push the pace and go for the kill. Chuck's endurance is suspect and if Silva can tire him he may be able to take him out in the later rounds. Both have KO power though and are great finishers, so the fight could end at any time.

Mike-Shamrock was never a champion in the current UFC, or even a tournament champion...but he was the first "super fight champion" if you recall. He had a time limit draw with Gracie(no decisions then) and at UFC 6 he won the super fight between he and Dan Severn to become the first super fight champion.
Agree with you on your picks as far as Pride vs UFC match ups, though I'm not so sure Chuck will be ko'd by Silva...might go the distance...either way though I pick Wanderlei as well. I think Fedor would hammer Sylvia quickly. He is too stationary a target and Fedor hits too hard. That being said Tim hits hard too and always has a punchers chance I suppose.

DJchaos-Yes Royce won those early tourneys and fought 3 times a night(4 times once at UFC 2), but that being said the quality of opposition wasn't even close to what it is now. Back then he beat guys that were accomplised martial artists, but some of them had likely never even been in a real fight in their lives. We all saw what happened when Royce got them to the ground...they had no clue what to do. I credit Royce for bringing ground fighting to the world. He showed how important it is to know what to do when the fight hits the ground, cause 90% of fights do. Would he win an 8 man tournament now though...even if we were talking prime Royce Gracie...no f'n way, the atheletes are just too good now and guys now how to play the ground game now. He will always be an octagon legend for helping to build the ufc into what it is today and for introducing the importance of ground fighting to the world...their greatest champion though? No way IMO. For now I will say Couture...could soon be Liddell. If Hughes manages to luck out and beat St.Pierre it might be him, not Royce though IMO.

UFC 61 Thoughts

styles88-both the shamrock/ortiz fights have not lasted under 5 minutes total. Their 1st fight went 3 full rounds(in a scheduled 5 rounder) before Kens corner or the docter, or both, stopped the fight cause he had been hammered the whole time...so Tito won by TKO. IMO when they fight again(cause Ken is dumb enough to want one more crack), it will be much like the 2nd fight....Ken will be very lucky to make it to the 3 minu mark of the first round.

Tito wants to fight again in november so he doesn't get stale waiting for Chuck..the scheduled Silva/Liddell, and St.Pierre/Hughes card. Already that's an outstanding double main event. I say if Ken wants one more beating let's add this to the card as well and make it a super card, the UFC's verson of wrestlemania so to speak. That way we get Ken Shamrock out of the UFC finally, cause once he loses again there will be no interest in seeing Ken again, except possibly for a Shamrock/Gracie 3 legends match up.

Silva/Liddell WILL happen...it's already signed...why would they make a big deal of it and announce the fight if it wasn't already signed? Unless Chuck gets KO'd by Babalu(unlikely) and athletic commisions don't allow him to fght for a few months, I believe it is signed for October or November.

Here's the results of tonights fights for UFC 61:

Match Winner Loser Method Round Time

1 Drew Fickett Kurt Pellegrino Submission (Rear Naked Choke) 3 1:20
2 Cheick Kongo Gilbert Aldana TKO (Doctor Stoppage) 1 4:13
3 Jeff Monson Anthony Perosh TKO (Strikes) 1 2:22
4 Hermes Franca Joe Jordan Submission (Triangle Choke) 3 0:47
5 Joe Stevenson Yves Edwards TKO (Doctor Stoppage) 2 5:00
6 Frank Mir Dan Christison Decision (Unanimous) 3 5:00
7 Tito Ortiz Ken Shamrock TKO (Strikes) 1 1:18
8 Josh Burkman Josh Neer Decision (Unanimous) 3 5:00
9 Tim Sylvia Andrei Arlovski Decision (Unanimous) 5 5:00

Well not that great a card, though it was nice to see Kenny get beat down quick like I figured he would. Then of course he whines about a quick stoppage. He wasn't intelligently defending himself, and Tito was hammering him. Could he have taken a couple more elbows...probably, but it wasn't necessary. Tito had established his dominance and just would have kept hammering Ken, cause Ken was doing nothing to improve his position. So now they will probably fight again. Same thing will happen again. Sad the crowd still gives Tito no respect. Not his fault the ref stepping in. IMO the stoppage was fine, I had no problem with it at all.
Arlovski/Sylvia 3 was a big dissapointment. I personally thought Arlovski won rounds 2, 3, and 4, and should have gotten the decision. The fight overall sucked though. Thought someone was going down. Oh well...more proof the UFC heavyweights suck more often then not. Sure Pride has some big fights go the distance...but Nog/Herring 1, Nog/Fedor 1 and 2(or 3 I guess), and Fedor/Cro Cop were all good fights IMO.
My God that was a lot of blood in Edwards/Stevenson. Most I've ever seen in an MMA fight maybe. It looked like a f'n murder had occured. If not for the cut IMO Edwards would have taken the fight.

The HUGE news coming out of this is that Pride 205 champion Wanderlei Silva has signed to fight Chuck Liddell. He came out from the audience after Dana White announced the fight. This was the first time I have heard Silva speak english...he did well...except when he first said he wanted to "f*#k" Chuck Liddell, before he corrected himself and said fight. Very funny!
Anyway, this is AWESOME news. I assume it will be a 5 round title fight...assuming Chuck beats Babalu. This is like the dream fight of dream fights for MMA, and I can't wait. I hope these guys don't take some luster off this fight by losing their next fights. Silva could have to fight 2 times on the next Pride card, so hopefully he'll still be good to go and won't lose bad if he does lose. Same with Chuck...he better not look past Babalu, cause he's much more dangerous then last time. Can't wait for this fight! It will be awesome...wish it were under Pride rules, but oh well. I'm sure Chuck wouldn't mind returning the favour seeing as he's already fought in Pride.
And props to Dana White. People talk $hit about him, and sometimes he annoys me too, but he does his best to put on some damn good fights, and this is his most impressive accomplishment yet. Props to Pride president Sakibara too. Both these guys are taking a big chance here putting their champions in the ring with the potential for one of them to look really bad...Dana especially is taking a chance because Chuck is the man in UFC and known as the top fighter, especially to casual fans. Anyway, can't F'ing wait for this fight!!! This has been an awesome year for MMA IMO.

WHO SHOULD THE LEAFS KEEP? AND SHOULD THEY GET RID OFF?
Posted: 7/8/2006 3:13:12 PM
Here is what I would like the Leafs roster to look like at the start of the season...
Based on who I think they'll keep and who I want them to keep, or get:

Forward:
Steen Sundin O'Neil
Antropov Wellwood Ponikarovsky
Stajan Peca Tucker
Kilger Pohl Belak
ext:Ondrus and Wilm

Defense:
Gill McCabe
Kaberle Kubina
Coliacovo Berg
ext:Harrison

Goal:
Raycroft
Aubin

-At forward...Pohl is on a one way contract apparently, so he will be up for sure. Alex Suglobov will be up if Peca is not signed, maybe will be anyway. Ondrus and Wilm are not sure things, but on my team they would be cause I like a gritty team and they are perfect role players IMO. I would get rid of Antropov, but apparently everyone likes playing with him and it's likely he'll resign, so I guess he'll be a Leaf no matter what I want. I would love them to sign Peca...he's an excellent 2 way player and would be the perfect 2nd or 3rd line center. Just don't expect him to be an offensive juggernaut cause he won't be. He can also move up the depth chart if the Leafs are out of the play-offs again at deadline time and want to move Sundin. Kilger and Belak offer size and Kilger can play on any line while Belak offers toughness and a heavyweight presence. Plus he can be the #7 or 8 D-man, and fill in anywhere in a pinch.

-On the back end...My first two pairings make perfect sense...though I would pair McCabe and Kaberle on the PP of course, and put Kubina on the #2 PP maybe with a forward on the point with him. Don't really want Khavnov or Berg...but you can't break 3 rookies in on the back end at once IMO, so I would get rid of Khavnov and keep Berg around as the #5 or 6 guy, while ideally in my world breaking in Coliacovo and Harrison on the back end. Of couse they are hardly sure things. Brendan Bell, Ian White, Andy Wozniewski, and Steffan Kronwall also have excellent chances to make the team next year. The Leafs are deep in defensive prospects, which is a good thing...it may allow them to move one to improve the forward position eventually.

-In net...obviously Raycroft is the #1 guy. Since Aubin is on a one way contract and Tellqvist is not, he will be the back up unless Tellqvist REALLY shines in pre-season, in which case they would likey move Aubin or waive him. Doubtfull, and Telly could use another year of seasoning in the minors anyway...maybe if he's #1 down there all year he will finally gain some confidence and live up to his potential...

Thoughts people...how does everyone like my version of the Leafs???

Huge 2 Weeks in MMA coming up, starting tonight!
Posted: 7/6/2006 6:50:11 PM
GT99-I have seen Mark fight before...he is a good fighter, just saying he better not employ that style regularly in the UFC is all. Saw him beat the crap out of Stephane Vigneault last night on the Fight Network...from TKO 20. Good fight.

lakelandsm-I agree that Barnett and Nog, the two grapplers, might have the best chance of meeting in the final. Really any 4 of these guys could win it all, which should make for an exciting semi finals and finals.

So what do you guys think about Silva's chances of winning? If he does should he face Fedor? I think definitely he will have earned it, and all the Pride fans in Japan will demand to see this match up. It would be an awesome fight IMO, and someone would get ko'd for sure IMO.

Thanks for resonding guys!

GT99-Hominick did what he had to to win I suppose. That being said, he better try to bring the fight more next time...Dana doesn't keep boring fighters around usually...remember what happened to Salaverry? Oh wait...Matt Hughes....guess that theory is shot to $hit!

lakelandsm-Good call on the fights, I called them all right too. Didn't think Barnett and Cro Cop would have such an easy time though, or Wanderlei for that matter too...my friend was freaking out yelling at Silva to do something, or get up when he had Fujita on his back. I kept telling him it was all good, he defended perfectly and even had a couple submission attempts. When he got up he was somewhat cautious...which again pi$$ed my friend off. He fought the perfect fight though, you don't go rushing in on a wrestler like Fujita or you get taken down...let him come to you and try to catch him on the way in. Silva barely took a punch in this fight and didn't have a mark on his face after.

Anyway, wondering who everyone would like to see matched up in the semi's? Here are the 3 possibilities available to Pride:
1.Cro Cop/Silva and Nogueira/Barnett
2.Cro Cop/Barnett and Nogueira/Silva
3.Cro Cop/Nogueira and Silva/Barnett

I'd like to see #2 personally, cause I really want to see Nog/Silva cause of the Brazilian thing and the Top Team/Chute Boxe rivalry. #1 would make some sense too...option #3 seems the least likely cause there's no real interest in a Barnett/Silva match. Should be interesting...

Another question for my fellow MMA fans....what if Wanderlei wins the whole tournament??? That would say a LOT for him maybe being the best fighter in the world. Would he get a Pride heavyweight title shot at Fedor then? He is a weight class below, but that would be a HUGE dream match in Japan...perfect for the new years show. Wonder if he would actually have a chance...I got to think so...If they stay standing either guy could KO the other...hell Fujita rocked Fedor, so Silva certainly could KO him. And Silva has only been KO'd once, but dropped(flash KO) several times before regaining his composure, so Fedor could definitely KO him, cause Silva has never faced someone with the KO power of Fedor IMO(Cro Cop maybe). Anyway, if Wanderlei wins the tourney they HAVE to make this fight happen, I would love to see it and so would many others I think.

Leafs signed two large d-men recently...Pavel Kubina for 4 years and Hal Gill for 3. Kubina has some offensive upside, Gill is solid in his own end. Both are very large men. Should greatly improve the defense....hope this doesn't the young guys will be waiting another year in the AHL. We better see Carlo and hopefully one more d-man on the Leafs this year(my pick would be Harrison). This could mean Kaberle is available though. We'll see...

An outstanding card tonight put on by Pride. REALLY looking forward to the finals of this tournament now...Nog got lucky in his match a little, decision could have gone either way, but I guess he got the nod cause he rocked Werdum a couple times. Werdum looks better every fight though, give this guy another year or two to work on his striking and all round game and he could be champ some day. Hunt/Barnett went according to plan I guess, thought it would last longer though. Same with Yoshida/Cro Cop. Silva/Fujita was good, ref should have been in their sooner, Fujita can take insane head shots though, lol. Belfort looked like the Belfort of old, though the quality of opposition was lacking. Little Nog beat Overeem again...cause Overeem gassed AGAIN, lol. He always looks so good in the first round, then he goes in the tank. Anyway, looking forward to the next round a LOT. I personally would like to see Nogueira/Silva and Cro Cop/Barnett as the match ups. I would love to see Nog/Silva because it's a Brazilian dream match cause of the Chute Boxe, Brazilian Top Team rivalry. Would like to see Barnett get another shot at Mirko too, think it could go either way. Barnett will tap him this time IMO. We'll see though...

Anyway here's the full results for the card tonight:

PRIDE Open-Weight Grand Prix (2nd Round) Results

Pawel Nastula def. Edson Drago - Submission (Armbar) 4:33 R1
Yoshihiro Nakao def. Eun Su Lee - TKO (Doctor's stoppage) 4:16 R1

Antonio Rogerio Nogueira def. Alistair Overeem - TKO (Corner threw in towel) 2:13 R2
Kazuhiro Nakamura def. Evangelista "Cyborg" Santos - Submission (Kimura) 4:49 R1
Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira def. Fabricio Werdum - Unanimous Decision
Wanderlei Silva def. Kazuyuki Fujita - TKO (Corner threw in towel) 9:21 R1
Josh Barnett def. Mark Hunt - Submission (Kimura) 2:02 R1

Saiyan-I agree, Pride SHOULD also allow elbows, but what can ya do? I'd like to see some kind of universal MMA rules for all organizations, but I don't see that ever happening. I would prefer soccer kicks, stomps, and elbows to be allowed in all organizations. Won't likely see UFC having kicks to a downed opponent any time soon though. It presents a negative image of the sport to some unfortunately, and UFC won't chance that. Not to mention all the bs they'd have to go through to EVER get any legit athletic commisions to accept that.
I disagree with what you say about Liddell though...a journeyman in Pride? No way IMO, though he is getting older too and could drop off any time to that level. Right now though he's at his peak, and is no doubt at least a top 5 guy in the division.

sumoyouknow-Thanks for ansering my question finally(with regards to which 5 pride light heavy's are ahead of Liddell), though Rampage is no longer with Pride. Really between the 5 you picked and Liddell, all are REALLY close in abilty IMO, and on any given night any of them could beat another I think. No way can you legitimately say Overeem should be ahead of him. Liddell beat him, and don't use the excuse about gassing, that fight only went like 4 minutes. Cardio is part of the game, and if Overeem can't keep up that's always going to work against him, just like it always has. Liddell would beat him again if the fought...he has a better chin and won't be able to submit Chuck or outlast him. Overeem is a good fighter, just not an elite fighter IMO. He beat Belfort twice, but Vitor isn't all that anyway, too inconsistent. He beat Kharitonov in a big upset IMO, but wouldn't do it again I don't think.

Because the 5 you listed and Liddell are so close in ability I think if Chuck fought them all he would likely beat some of them, but not all. Here's how I see all 5 of those fights going:
1.Liddell/Rampage-First fight could have gone either way. Same could happen if they fight again. Chuck has a better chin though, and if he came in in better shape I think he would win. Plus he's got the extra motivation of trying to avenge a loss. IMO he would do just that. He's on a roll, while Rampage has been very inconsistent of late. I see Chuck KOing Rampage if they ever fight again.
2.Liddell/Silva-Again this could go either way. Chuck has a better chin, but Wanderlei is a better all round striker with better cardio. That's why I see Wanderlei winning a unanimous decision here unless Chuck KO's him.
3.Liddell/Shogun-Wow, I would love to see this fight. I would have to pick Rua though...If Chuck didn't catch him and KO him, Rua would win for sure IMO, cause there's no way Liddell could match his pace. He would just keep on him all fight, eventually Chuck would gas, and Rua would finish him...if he didn't totally gas Rua would still win a decision IMO.
4.Liddell/Arona-I like this match up for Chuck and for me cause I dislike Arona a lot. Arona did very well against Silva in 2 fights, but Silva is not the wrestler Chuck is, and I don't think Arona would take him down as easily as he took Silva down. Thus...I see Chuck KO'ing Arona. Arona has strong leg kicks, but mostly his stand up sucks a$$. With the way he fights with his chin up in the air he's a KO waiting to happen. I would love to see Chuck knock him out too, cause I hate Arona. I think it would happen too. No way Arona gets him down, and if he does, no way he keeps him down. Chuck would KO him IMO.
5.Liddell/Little Nog-Tough fight to call. Nog is a solid technical boxer, but likely wouldn't be able to hurt Chuck. Chuck could hurt him though, but Nog does have a solid chin too. Nog has better cardio. I can't pick a winner here really...it's a weird match up. I guess I will say Chuck by KO, cause even though Nog is a solid striker, he has no power, and won't be able to take Chuck down to look for a submission, thus I see a Liddell KO happening eventually.

I guess it's a matter of opinion really as to who ranks where. I personally would have it like this though:
1.Silva
2.Liddell
3.Shogun
4.Little Nog
5.Arona
-Rampage hasn't done much lately so he doesn't rate IMO. Of course when he's on his game he could beat any of the above fighters. I put Liddell at #2 cause even though I think Rua would beat him, he hasn't, and Liddell is the UFC champ. He has beaten quality opponents like Ortiz and Couture(2x) in the UFC.

BTW, Randelman was UFC heavyweight champ back in the day, not light heavy(which was still called middleweight when he was there anyway).

April-49 seconds I believe...

Baldfisher-All of us on here and your friends are right! LOL! You have to check out Pride! I love UFC too but Pride takes MMA to another level. Rules are more pure IMO, allowing kicks and knees on the ground, etc. Also like the restart in the middle. Not too mention more talented fighters IMO, UFC has some good ones too, but Pride has way more depth. Their tournaments are usually great too. If you want to know who the "Ultimate Fighter" really is, you need to see Fedor Emelianenko fight...he is the best fighter in the world IMO. April, you should check out some Pride too...if you like UFC you should like Pride.

Saiyan-You basically summed up the differences between Pride and UFC, and also why I like Pride a bit better too more or less. Good run down. I personally don't care wether it's in a ring or a cage though, I have no preference so long as there are still restarts in the middle and you can't use the cage to pin a guy.

GT99-I too would like to see more interpromotional stuff, but I think we are dreaming. One thing I think you might over estimate though is the general publics interest in seeing a match up like Liddell/Silva. As hardcore MMA fans we all of course would LOVE to see this fight, it's like maybe MMA's top dream match in some ways. Would it do huge PPV buys? I don't know...I would certainly buy it. That being said, the general public, a lot of people why buy ppv's, don't even know who Wanderlei Silva is. Some people have heard of him, but haven't really seen him fight often if at all. These same people think Chuck is the man, and often have no idea that Rampage(whom Silva has beaten twice) gave Chuck a good beating in Pride. I think it would do decent ppv buys, if it was promoted right, but I have a feeling a match up like Liddell/Ortiz 2(assuming Tito kills Kennny) would do more ppv buys and be more of a marque match up to a lot of people.
The UFC doesn't seem interested in neccessarily having the best fighters either. They never really go for it when the top guys in Pride become free agents. They could have had Silva if they really wanted him bad enough. Rampage said they never even made an offer...They could have had many others too. Anderson Silva is a good signing but generall they don't go after guys that made their rep in Pride. UFC would prefer to have people think their champs are the best in the world, and creat stars from within as opposed to signing the top free agents to see who really are the best fighters in the world. Whatever...all we can do as fans I guess is just sit back and enjoy them both for what they offer to the sport as MMA continues to grow and become more mainstream every day.

Huge 2 Weeks in MMA coming up, starting tonight!
Posted: 6/28/2006 8:13:22 PM
Ultimate Fight Night tonight was a solid card. First two fights weren't that exciting, but had their moments I suppose. Evans looked good, surprisingly dominating Bonnar, didn't expect that to happen. Just more athletic I guess. MacDonald looked good in his upset win, and slapped on a real nice, quick armbar. Silva DOMINATED Leben, again not something I expected. I knew Silva was a big jump up in quality opposition for Leben, but I thought his strong jaw would keep him in this fight much longer. Guess he's never been hit by someone who hits that hard, cause he got rocked early and never recovered. The last fight was amazing. Goulet looked awesome, especially in round 1. Then get gets rocked by Cummo early in round 2, but still came back to dominate the round. Goulet dominated round 3 as well, but then got caught in a real tight rear naked choke in the last 30 seconds. Thought Cummo had him for sure, but Goulet managed to slip out and hold on for the decision. Great fight. Goulet looked great controlling on the ground every which way, but still has jaw issues I think. Great lead in card for the next one though...Pride on sunday...likely will be the best card of them all.

Here are the results of the entire card, including non televised fights:

Jorge Santiago def. Justin Levens via TKO (strikes) at 2:13 of Round 1.
-Rob MacDonald def. Kristian Rothaermel via Submission (armbar) at 4:01 of Round 1.
-Jon Fitch def. Thiago Alves via TKO (strikes) at 4:37 of Round 2.
-Jason Lambert def. Branden Lee Hinkle via TKO (ref stoppage) at 5:00 in Round 1.
-Josh Koscheck def. Dave Menne via Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28) after 3 Rounds.
-Mark Hominick def. Jorge Gurgel via Unanimous Decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28) after 3 Rounds.
-Rashad Evans def. Stephan Bonnar via Majority Decision (30-27, 29-28, 29-29) after 3 Rounds.
-Jonathan Goulet def. Luke Cummo via Majority Decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-29) after 3 Rounds.
-Anderson Silva def. Chris Leben via TKO (strikes) at 0:49 of Round 1.

Tito/Shamrock 1 was a solid fight IMO...I'll take your word for it though that it resembled gay porn...having never seen that stuff I can't say for sure...lol. Tito's style is G&P though, so I guess that's why you would say that. I never said he's an exciting figther, but I'd rather watch him then some other lay and pray artists, like Matt Hughes and Ricardo Arono, who are even more boring and suck as human beings from what I can tell.

And regardless of wether you think Tito/Shamrock 1 was the "most boring fight of the century", it sold...at the time it was the most successful MMA PPV ever for it's time I do believe, and still one of the biggest drawing shows they've ever had in the UFC. The next one will be too cause people love grudge matches...having Sylvia/Arlovski share the bill helps, but rest assure Tito/Shamrock is really what will make or break this PPV, cause casual MMA fans can't wait to see them fight again...they still think Shamrock is a good fighter! lol

As far as Tito vs Silva, I agree Silva would likely take it, but if Tito can get him down the same thing would happen as did last time. Could go either way, but if Tito can't get him down he'd be toast shortly of course. So long as Silva wasn't too agressive and waited for Tito to try to shoot in on him, as opposed to chasing him making it easier for Tito to take him down, he would win by KO against Tito.

WHO SHOULD THE LEAFS KEEP? AND SHOULD THEY GET RID OFF?
Posted: 6/26/2006 4:57:13 PM
The Leafs should NOT resign Lindros or Allison. They need to rebuild. Those 2 cost too much and are way injury prone. I always liked Domi, but his time has come and gone. He can't fight any more anyway, and he doesn't seem very willing to do so. He's also become a problem in the dressing room from all I've heard. He will be bought out or moved very soon IMO.

I would also move McCabe cause he's not worth what they are willing to pay him. If they could package McCabe and Antropov with a pick or young kid to Edmonton for Pronger I would make that deal in a heart beat, even if it means giving up a good prospect or a first round pick. And yes Antropov must go too...how many more years should we give him to finally develop into a good player??? Plus he's injury prone.

To the guy that said to get rid of Wilm...why??? A players value is not measured in points alone. No he's never going to be a big producer, but he's VERY solid in his own end, and is the perfect 4th line center, kills penalties and can fight if he has to as well. Good veteran leader that knows his role.

I also like Ondrus. He can take over where Domi left off, cause he's younger and will actually win some fights...plus plays physically more consistently. Pefect back-up for Belak, who should play more, but at forward...IMO it's still important to have a heavyweight.

Get rid of Richardson(don't resign), and Khavnov. Coliacovo, Bell, and Harrison will hopefully be full time this upcoming season. Harrison can help with the toughness btw.

Sundin should stay...might be able to get a lot for him at the deadline...if you're going to trade him that is the time to do it, otherwise he'll likely not be resigned after next season anyway.

Befour is done now for sure with the addition of Raycroft. Aubin has a one way contract, so unless Tellqvist really outplays him in pre-season, he'll be the regular back up this year, while Tellqvist will start in the AHL. He'll be back up in 07-08 if he keeps developing though.

As far as free agents, don't know who's all available, but if they can get a speedy forward that can score and still has some good years left, of a younger, physical, defensive D-man, IMO that is what they should be looking at.

I know I'm likely in the minority, but I like Tito. I think he's genuine and seems to be deep down a good guy. He does lots of charity work and stuff with kids and you saw how he was as a trainer on UF. He does talk some smack, but I think guys like that can be good for the sport. As much as people supposedly hate the wrestling talk or whatever you want to call it, it sells PPV's, as was proven with Tito/Shamrock 1, and will be proven again next week-end I'm pretty sure. Same thing with Ali...why is he so famous now and remembered as the greatest, and why did his fights do so well at the box office? Yes he was real good, one of the best, but also because he sold himself well, he based a lot of his talk and hyping of fights on Georgous George the wrestler. As much as people might find it distasteful sometimes, it sells fights. If nothing else you are going to pay hoping to see the big mouth finally shut up. IMO Shamrock is way more of a big mouth then Ortiz. He started the confrontation with Tito during the show, and at the end. For a guy who hasn't really beaten any good opponents in over 5 years he sure has a lot to say. It's like he really thinks he's still the "badest man on the planet", and IMO he never was even close to that, not even in his prime. Really IMO that's all Shamrock has still, is a big mouth and his ability to sell his fights.

I still don't see how people can put down UFC as completely inferior to Pride. I like it better too, and to me it is more exciting, but to say their fighters are that much superior is simply not true(except at Heavyweight where it's pretty obvious that is the case). I'm still waiting to hear from the guy that said Liddell isn't even a top 5 Light Heavy...so who are the 5 ahead of him??? And btw, Tito has fought Pride's golden boy Wanderlei Silva, and beat him...lay and pray decision or not...the same thing could happen again, though I admit the smart money would be on Wanderlei in a rematch. I guess I just don't get all this UFC bashing...both organizations have some good fighters and most of the time put on quality events IMO.

Huge 2 Weeks in MMA coming up, starting tonight!

Good card last night IMO, some good fights. Bisping in particular looked really good, as he dominated Haynes. It will be interesting to see how he does against some tougher competition though. Looking forward to Ultimate Fight Night now...and to correct myself, it's actually on Wednesday this week, not Thursday.

Here are the results of the entire card from last night including the bouts not shown on tv:
- Mike Nickels defeated Wes Combs by RNC at 3:20 R1
- Matt Hamill defeated Jesse Forbes by GNP at 4:47 R1
- Luigi Fiorivanti defeated Solomon Hutcherson by KO 4:15 R1
- Kalib Starnes defeated Danny Abbadi by RNC 2:56 R1
- Rory Singer defeated Ross Pointon by triangle choke :44 R1
- Keith Jardine defeated Wilson Gouveia by unanimous decision
- Kendall Grove defeated Ed Herman by unanimous decision
- Michael Bisping defeated Josh Haynes TKO at 4:14 of RD2
- Kenny Forian defeated Sam Stout by RNC at 1:46 of RD1

Huge 2 Weeks in MMA coming up, starting tonight!
Posted: 6/24/2006 12:16:59 PM
MMA fans should be in heaven these next two weeks, I know I for one am looking forward to every card.

Here's the schedule:

Ultimate Fighter Finals: tonight, June 24th
Ed Herman vs Kendall Grove-185lbs final
Mike Bisping vs Josh Haynes-205lbs final
bonus fight-Sam Stout vs Kenny Florian-155lbs
-The weakest card of the 4 I think, but still has the potential to be a good one. I like Bisping by KO, and Herman by decision...not sure about the other bout cause I don't know much about Stout except he's a decent fighter and Canadian, so go Stout!!!

Ultimate Fight Night: Thursday June 28th
Chris Leben vs Anderson Silva-185lbs
Rashad Evans vs Stephan Bonnar-205lbs
Luke Cummo vs Jonathan Goulet-170lbs
Josh Koscheck vs Dave Menne-170lbs
Mark Hominick vs Jorge Gurgel-155lbs
-On paper this is a VERY solid card...hopefully all these fights will be shown on tv, they are scheduled to be except maybe Hominick vs Gurgel which sucks cause I'd rather see that then Koscheck/Menne. Anyway I see Silva winning a decision, cause he's the better fighter but Leben has an iron chin and Silva probably won't be able to KO him. Bonnar/Evans should be good too, but Bonnar is better on the ground so I see him winning by arm bar in round 2. Cummo and Goulet I don't know much about, so I'll pick the Canadian and hope for the best, but I know Luke is tough. Koscheck SHOULD beat Menne, but Menne is much more experienced. If Koscheck wins it will likely be by boring lay and pray decision. The 5th bout could go either way, so again I'll pick the Canuck and hope he pulls it off!

Pride Absolute tournament round 2:Critical Countdown: Sunday July 2nd
Tourney bouts;
Wanderlei Silva vs Kazuyuki Fujita
Hidehiko Yoshida vs Mirko Cro Cop
Fabricio Werdum vs Antonio Rodrigo Nogieura
Mark Hunt vs Josh Barnett
(undercard features rematch between Antonio ROGERIO Nogieura and Allistair Overeem, and the return of Vitor Belfort to Pride)
-Should be an awesome card, especially the tourney matches. Some real tough calls here as IMO all bouts could go either way, except I definitely expect Nogieura to beat Werdum, probably with striking cause their submissions shoulc cancel each other out. I guess I will pick Wanderlei by decision, cause it's unlikely he can KO Fujita...that being said Fujita could win a decision too, he's bigger and a better wrestler, so anything can happen here. I will pick Cro Cop by KO in round 2 over Yoshida, but if this goes to the ground Yoshida can definitely submit him. I will pick Barnett over Hunt...he's a better all round fighter and once he gets Hunt down I think he'll submit him with a key lock...he just better keep those hands up when they are standing though.

UFC 61: Saturday July 8th
Tim Sylvia vs Andrei Arlovski-heavyweight title match
Tito Ortiz vs Ken Shamrock-205lbs
Dan Christison vs Frank Mir-heavyweight
Josh Burkman vs Josh Neer-170lbs
Yves Edwards vs Joe Stevenson-155lbs
-The 2 main events could be real good, the undercard is a little lackluster, but might surprise. I will pick Arlovksi over Sylvia by first round KO. Could go either way...Arlovski is better all round but has no chin...either way this one doesn't get out of round 1. Tito will G&P Shamrock into retirement(I hope) in the first round, tko win. I see Mir coming back and winning by arm bar or triangle from the bottom in round 1. Neer/Burkman could go either way, but I'll pick Burkman by G&P TKO in round 2. Edwards has too much experience for Stevenson, and if Joe can't get the fight down he's in trouble, even if he can he might get tapped. I will say Edwards by KO in round 2.

Okay, I did the run down, let's here everyones thoughts and picks!

UFC coming to Montreal??

I think having St.Pierre/Hughes 2 in Montreal would be HUGE. It would also really help MMA's cause here in Canada a lot as it would get a LOT of media coverage I would think. Hope it happens, but I'm not holding my breath...either way, St.Pierre will win! lol

HUGE couple of weeks in MMA coming up, with the Ultimate Fighter finals, Ulitimate Fight Night, UFC 61, and the Pride Absolute 2nd round all coming up. Very much looking forward to all of these cards.
My picks for the main two scraps in UFC 61: Ortiz by TKO ref stoppage from G&P in Round 1, and Arlovski by KO in Round 1. Arlovski has a glass jaw, so Tim could win again, even though overall AA is more skilled. No matter who wins I would be shocked to see this fight go to a 2nd round unless both guys come out real cautious.

As far as the Pride vs UFC thing, I like Pride a little better myself, but like both really. I think it's BS that Dana White would not let Chuck fight Wanderlei. That was the match-up the UFC wanted from the beggining in that tournament from 03. Pride is the organization that was worried there IMO, why else would the match-up Chuck with Overeem in the first round, and then Jackson in round 2, instead of having him fight Wanderlei? At the time Yoshida was not thought very highly of, and most people thought Wanderlei would walk through him into the finals while Chuck would be hard pressed to beat Rampage. Pride wanted Chuck to have a tough road so if he ever did fight Wanderlei in the finals he would be more worn out.
Also just because Chuck lost to Rampage then, doesn't mean he would again or that he would not beat Wanderlei. It was a close fight really, and if Chuck had not gassed anything could have happened. I'm also guessing Chuck did not arive in Japan early enough to get over the jet lag, cause he looked sluggish in that fight. He also did not follow the game plan. He basically just boxed with Rampage, while the plan was for him to throw lots of leg kicks and mix in some high kicks as well, he hardly threw any of either. IMO Chuck would beat Rampage in a rematch, but it could go either way just like last time. A Chuck/Wanderlei match-up could go either way as well. Either guy could KO the other, or it could go the distance IMO. I think Wanderlei would probably win a decision if they were to fight, cause he has better cardio and uses knees and kicks much more then Chuck. That being said, Chuck has a much better chin, so who knows really.
Tilt saying Chuck is not even a top 5 guy in his weight class is totally ignorant and definitely not the case. IMO he's #2. I'd be curious to know who you rank ahead of him Tilt...
I also don't think Igor and Cro Cop would dominate in UFC. Cro Cop maybe, but Igor no way. Who has he beat lately? He has heavy hands and plently of experience, but is very predictable and one dimensional. I think AA and Sylvia would beat Igor at this point, and if you want to move Igor down to light heavy I still think he would get beat by Chuck, Tito, and maybe Babalu as well.

UFC 60 Thoughts
Posted: 5/29/2006 9:09:19 PM
I thought UFC 60 was kind of sad...I figured Hughes would win, and I figured he'd be dominate, but not that dominate. Royce couldn't even get guard, Matt passed right away and then just controlled and pounded Royce the whole time. Royce is a proud guy, and wouldn't even tap when Matt had his arm totally stretched out there. He looked VERY defeated afterwords, and really dissapointed in himself for at least not giving a good fight. Sad to see his legacy tarnished like that, probably never should have come back really.

Diego did not look good IMO. He's becoming very predictable. He's a good wrestler with good ground and pound and good submissions, but his stand up sucks and everyone knows now he'll go right for the takedown. If you can keep it standing with Diego, you have an excellent chance to win. Diego is solid on the ground already, he should put all his time into learning some stand-up right now, cause eventually he's going to run into a good striker he can't take down easily, then it's night night Diego.

I agree that the ufc and pride have pretty equal 205lb divisions right now. Pride may have a little more depth though...Pride has-Wanderlei Silva, Ricardo Arona, Shogun Rua, Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, Hidehiko Yoshida, Allistair Overeem, Kazuhiro Nakamura, Igor Vovchanchyn and a few other guys they could bring up from their 183 division if they wanted to. Quinton Jackson and Kazushi Sakuraba have moved on to other organizations recently. UFC has- Chuck Liddell, Tito Ortiz, Renato Sobral, Forrest Griffin, Dean Lister, Ken Shamrock, Stephane Bonnar, Rashad Evans, Sam Hoger, Alessio Sakara, and if they wanted they could have a solid 205 guy in Brandon Vera if they wanted to bring him down from heavyweight. Rich Franklin could also move up from 185lbs and hang in fine with anyone in the division IMO.
The lower weight divisions are fairly equal too, but again Pride has more depth as far as quality fighters go. At 170lbs though I don't know if Pride has anyone that can match Hughes and GSP.
The heavyweight divisions aren't even close. As far as quality fighters go, UFC has Tim Sylvia and Andrei Arlovski. Brandon Vera looks solid too, but still is somewhat of an unknown comodity. Other then that you have a handful of B level fighters really. Pride has several guys that I think would beat Sylvia and Arlovski. I could see Fedor Emelianenko, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, Mirko Cro Cop, Mark Hunt, Josh Barnett, Sergei Kharitonov, Fabricio Werdum, Kazayuki Fujita and even Mark Coleman and Aleksander Emelianenko giving either of those two UFC heavyweights a very tough fight. The top 3 Pride heavyweights(Fedor, Nog, and Cro Cop) would be heavily favoured against either of the UFC's top heavyweights. It's sad how much of a gap their is between the two heavyweight divisions. UFC should break the bank any time they get the chance at a quality Pride heavyweight. Rumor has it the UFC might be working with K1 soon, which would give them a little more depth in all divisions.

I was personally surprised with just how easy it was for Hughes. I expected him to win, but that may have been one of the easiest(if not the easiest) fights of his life. I really don't think it would matter if Royce were in his prime. Like I said before, Royce's time was filled with Joe Blow Karate Sensei's, etc, really there weren't that many quality fighters around, and no one knew ground fighting then, that's why Royce was so dominate.
As far as those worried about GSP getting the next title shot...it's already been promised to him by Dana White. He announced it at a press conference in Toronto a few months ago. It's looking like September or October for that fight.
As far as Pride vs UFC, well it's true Pride has more depth, and their heavyweight division blows away the UFC's, the other weight divisions are much closer. I also think Liddell, Franklin, and Hughes could hang with anyone in their weight divisions in Pride. Just cause Chuck lost to Rampage once, doesn't mean it would happen again...that fight could have gone either way. I would guess Chuck didn't take the time to get aclimated to the time change and what not last time, cause he looked tired. He also didn't execute the game plan that was set out for him to beat Rampage...he was supposed to throw a lot more kicks(particularly to Rampages legs), and knees, and he mostly just boxed. I think a rematch would favour Liddell right now cause he's just on that kind of role. I would love to see Liddell/Silva some day, and I think that could go either way too. That being said, I do like Pride better...the soccer kicks and knees on a downed opponent make it much more real, and much more exciting IMO.

The Gi won't be allowed tonight, so that hurts Royce. Should be interesting. Hughes SHOULD win by ground and pound tko stoppage, or by unaimous decision, but who knows..? They both suck on their feet, so there it is anyones game IMO, and anything can happen there, either of these guys have a punchers chance there. I expect most of the fight will be on the ground, with Matt on top and Royce on the bottom looking for a submission. It's 3 rounds tonight too, so that hurts Royce again IMO. I think likely his only chance is to catch Hughes in an arm bar or triangle from the bottom, or less likely to get Matt's back and choke him out. I just hope it's not a boring fight, but I fear it will be cause both these guys tend to be boring fighters sometimes...We'll see what happens...I will say Hughes will win though by unanimous decision, and hopefully he will not get injured so GSP can take his title in September or October.

I'm a huge fan, I follow UFC and Pride and others too. I like Pride a little better I think, but both are good. MMA rules, boxing can't even compare any more....MMA will be the number 1 combat sport in the world soon, if it's not already.

Macktruck-Maybe you are looking forward to Shamrock/Ortiz more, but most fans who follow the sport of MMA closely are looking forward to seeing St.Pierre/Hughes much more. Probably because it will actually be a competitive fight. I want to see the other fight too, but it's not nearly as anticipated as St.Pierre/Hughes. Ortiz will just steam role washed up Kenny again, probably finish him in a round this time. Shamrock is way past his prime and was never a great fighter anyway. He has beaten nobody really in 5 years now, maybe longer. I don't count Kimo as much of a win. St.Pierre/Hughes might not have the pro wrestling type hype that Shamrock/Ortiz has(cause these guys are good talkers and good at hyping up their fights I'll admit), but they are the top 2 fighters in the world at 170lbs, and it will be a great fight that could go either way. In the other fight you got a guy in Ortiz that has squeeked out some questionable decisions recently, but hasn't done much himself latey. He's maybe #5 in the world tops(and that's really pushing it) at 205lbs. Shamrock doesn't even register on the radar in his weight class...if I had to guess I'd rank him maybe 20th at best in his weight class(205lbs), and that's pushing it too. He is living off his name, and that's all he has right now really IMO, cause honestly he shouldn't even be fighting right now. His time has come to step down before he further tarnishes whatever legacy he has left.

Jeter Fan-I agree, it will be a great fight and either guy could win, but I really think Georges will take it(and I pray he does cause I don't like Hughes at all). He's more experienced now, and can match Hughes in every way IMO. Hughes has won a lot of fights in the past just because he's stronger then most guys. He won't have that advantage here. GSP is just as strong if not stronger. His wrestling and submission skills are about equal too. GSP is faster, and a much better striker. If he can, he should try to keep Hughes standing, because Matt has no stand up skills to speak of IMO. GSP had him last time if not for that lucky submission. I don't think he'll get caught like that again. I look forward to seeing Matt pay for dissing his northern neighboors, GSP by KO!

The greatest sports story of the year will be in September or October. That's when Canada's greatest athelete Georges St.Pierre will whoop Matt Hughe's a$$ for the UFC Welterweight title...after a first round TKO! Go Georges!!!

TNA vs WWE

I like TNA, and they do have better wrestling more often then not, but they're still behind in some things. Production values of course, but that's cause WWE has more money. They also have to rush some things because they only have an hour show. Still though, if you like high flying action, TNA is the place to go cause they don't bury the smaller guys like the WWE.

The UFC.....

My thoughts on some of these MMA fighters...

Randy Couture-A legend and a total class act, maybe the greatest UFC champion ever. Almost always came in with a great game plan, and won fights he shouldn't have because of this. Kind of a a boring fighter though at times.

Chuck Liddell-Great fighter, and right now should he keep on his role, may be remember'd as the greatest UFC competitor ever. Good striker, usually has exciting fights. Would like to see rematches with Babalu(next up for Chuck), Ortiz, and Quinton Jackson.

Tito Ortiz-Good fighter, better talker. Some don't like Tito cause of his mouth, and sometimes I admit he does have boring fights. Still I think having a few loudmouths in the sport is a good thing, and deep down he seems like a good guy to me.

Ken Shamrock-Way over-rated IMO. He beat a few solid fighters, but he's not the great legend he makes himself out to be. In his day(10 years ago) he was one of the best. In his day though there were far fewer quality fighters. A lot of Ken's wins came against guys that wouldn't last 30 seconds in an MMA fight nowadays. Who has he beat in the last 5 years? Nobody, unless you count Kimo, and IMO Kimo isn't much of a fighter either. Watching the newest Ultimate Fighter I think you see the real Ken Shamrock. Creative editing my a$$. This guy is a legend in his own mind, and he's a bit of a****really, not to mention not too bright, which is why Tito loves to play with his head.

Royce Gracie-Another legend, but again another guy that dominated in MMA's infancy basically cause there weren't that many quality fighters around really. Still he's a great submission artist, and that alone gives him a chance against Hughes. Still I say Hughes by unanimous decision.

Matt Hughes-Good fighter, but not well rounded. Basically gets by on his exceptional wrestling skills, and great strength. His submission has improved though, I'll admit. Still I think despite the fact he talks about how well rounded he is now, his stand up still really sucks IMO. I think a stand-up fight with Gracie could go either way, cause neither of them have shown me anything on their feet. I don't like Hughes, and I can't wait to see St.Pierre destroy him soon. He dissed Canada, and he seems like a bully to me. St.Pierre can match his strength though. So long as Georges does not get caught in an lucky submission again, I can't see Hughes winning a remtach with Georges. Georges can negate his biggest strength(and that is his strength), and if he's smart he'll keep Hughes standing, where Matt has no chance IMO. Go Georges, Hughes sucks!

Some of my favs in MMA include:

Georges St.Pierre-Best Canadian fighter out there, future UFC welterweight champ, and a total class act that's always respectful of his opponents and the fans. It's too bad some Americans boo him simply cause he has a french accent. Sad. Great all round fighter anyway, and has plenty of years left.

Chuck Liddell-Exciting fighter, always loves to bang. Love the KO, so you got to love Chuck.

Quinton Jackson-Love early Rampage(before he rediscovered religion). The guy that would curse every second word, and slam the shit out of guys! Loved his power bomb on Arona!

Wanderlie Silva-Seems like a bit of a****maybe, but I must admit I love watching him fight cause he always has exciting fights and swings for the fences.

Antonio Rodrigo Nogiuera-Greatest submission artist in the heavyweight division. I love the ko, but I love a good ground fight too, and I love to see a guy like Nog win a fight simply because he can take a beating, and outsmart his opponent by capitalizing on any little mistake.

Fedor Emelianenko-Greatest fighter on the planet right now. He's like a cyborg! He will lose evetually, but right now he looks unbeatable. He's kind of like Tyson in the 80's, where you want to watch every fight just to see if someone can actually take this guy down.

Carlos Newton-Has only about a .500 record, but you got to respect a guy that will fight only the best, win some lose some, while studying to be a docter, and the guy speaks Japanese to boot! How's that for a role model!?

Kazushi Sakuraba-Exciting, inovative fighter, but his best days are past. Pride legend, has recently left the company.

Tank Abbott-Mostly an unskilled bar brawler, but always came to fight and had some great ko's.

Rich Franklin-Talented, intelligent, well rounded fighter. Great representative for MMA.

Hate list:

Matt Hughes-Arrogant bully needs to learn some respect for his northern neighboors...that day will be here soon!

Ricado Arona-Over-rated, SUPER boring fighter, seems like a snob too.

Ken Shamrock-Respect his toughness, but another over-rated fighter with a bad additude IMO.

Mark Coleman-BORING...Horribly boring fighter, just hate to watch him. Love when he gasses out after his usual 5 minute burst, then gets ko'd!

Kevin Randleman-Comeman's buddy...are they more then friends I wonder..? Hate him cause he has the same BORING style as Coleman(which is basically to take a guy down and dry hump him to a decision), but he also talks a lot more smack. The way he talks you'd think he was the greatest ever. Love some of his Pride interviews were he talks about how he's going to come out and hammer a guy, take him out in the first round, then as usual all he does is lie on the guy for 3 rounds...again I repeat...BORING!

That's all for now! Love the MMA talk though, keep it coming!

After his most recent 3 fight UFC contract ran out, Tank had a rematch with Cabbage Corriera at Rumble on the Rock(8 I think), and knocked him out in 1:23. Good thing too...Cabbage kind of walked into a big right, and just in time, cause Tank was sucking wind already and wouldn't have lasted much longer. After that, his most recent fight he lost to Hidehiko Yoshida in Pride by submission(arm bar I think) in about 6 minutes. That's the last anyone heard from Tank. I think that fight was last New Years, but I could be wrong. Since then he's probably been in about 20+ street fights I would guess, but nothing sanctioned. I know he's not very good, but I love that he comes to throw down every time and gives it his all, and loves to bang. It's too bad he never took his training seriously. He has good boxing(with LOTS of power in both hands), is very strong, and is a decent wrestler. If he had just taken the time to learn some submission defense and kept himself in better shape(cardio) he would have won a lot more fights IMO.

Chinua-When you say "I don't think the have womens events in your sport" are you refering to mixed martial arts or brazilian ju jitsu? I know nothing about womens MMA, but I do know they have womens fights. Hook and Shoot is one organization that features womens fights, and some others do too on occasion. It's not very prevelent though, kind of like womens boxing maybe, but definitely not as main stream. Not sure about womans bjj tournaments, but out west at least in the bigger cities, I would imagine they exist. I'm sure some others on hear could tell you about that.

chinua-Shorinryu I think...it was Okinawan for sure, as opposed to Japanese...I think I actually opened his mind a little. When I started there he had just opened his dojo. I asked him what he thought of UFC, and he said something like "it's the worst thing ever to happen to martial arts". Typical response from a lot of traditional martial artists. I made him a few fight tapes though, and we would grapple and spar a lot, and I think I opened his eyes a little. He now does Krav Maga instead(much more practical) and has converted his dojo to that, though he still teaches karate too I think.

Some interesting debate going on here. I don't want to offend anyone, and if I do, no I DON'T want to fight you! lol
All martial arts can be teach you something IMO, and it certainly doesn't hurt you no matter what you take, but I do tend to agree with GT99 that MMA is where it's at in comparison to most traditional martial arts. A lot of traditional martial arts have hardly any grappling, and we all know how important that is. As has been stated, a lot of them also do not practice full contact, or spar much at all, and to me that's just ridiculous. Too much Kata and stances you'll never use IMO.
With regards to MMA guys being the best fighters in the world, I personally believe they are, without a doubt. Just because they can't eye gouge or do other nasty stuff, it doesn't mean they don't know how or aren't capable of it. I'm sorry but I just don't buy the fact that there are guys out there who would easily whoop the top MMA fighters, just wouldn't happen IMO, fight to the death, or with rules, whatever. If these guys are out there, why haven't some of them got into MMA, and don't tell me that they don't fight for money, cause surely by now there would have been at least one bad seed out there that would have defied his sensei for financial gain. I respect what you are all saying, but I'll put of Fedor Emelianenko against anyone in the world right now. Call me crazy, but I see a fight between Fedor and most traditional martial artists ending very quickly. He would slam their a$$es on the concrete, and easily pummel them. Would not even be close.
Story for you with regards to TMA and their effectiveness. I took Karate for like a year and a half about 3 years ago I'd say. I had no previous martial arts training, but I do watch a LOT of MMA, and know some submissions, etc. So whenever I would spar with my 5th dan black belt sensei it wasn't pretty. He would dominate me easily on our feet. When we went to the ground though it was a different story cause I knew some things, and apparently he knew very little, cause I would tap him out about 7/10 times I'd say. I'm not claiming to be tough or anything, cause I'm not. I'm just saying, how the hell can some guy off the street come in and submit a black belt...easily most times!? Just from watching some MMA!? Take into account that there was little striking on the ground, and we weren't gouging each others eyes, or biting each others throats out, but still...he's a freaking black belt, I'm a nobody. It shouldn't have even been close, but more often then not I submitted him.

Nice Guy/Balanced/Jerk (defined)
Posted: 5/8/2006 11:42:21 PM
Some good info here. I think I fall into the "nice guy" catagory, and "balanced guy" catagory too. I can see how a lot of my nice guy attributes probably contributed to the downfall of my last long term relationship, and why after a while she didn't seem into me any more and neither she nor I could explain why. I am a nice guy by nature I think, but now I see that yes in some ways I am nice because I want that back I guess. That particular relationship was great in the beginning, lots of sex, lots of fun times, etc. That was when I didn't care as much. I would blow her off when she'd invite me over for sex if I was watching something good on TV, I acted like I didn't need her to be happy. Really that's cause that's how I felt at the time. I also spent much more time with my friends, and called her on all her $hi+. Once I said "I love you" though, and once we started spending more time together, it all went down hill. I would buy her stuff and do things for her, not to gain favour(or so I thought), but cause I actually wanted to. When I'm with a girl I like to please her and make her happy, so a gift once in a while is no big deal to me. I started being way more agreeable though, which was not a good thing I see now. I don't think I was ever a total door mat cause I would still say no sometimes and would stand up to her and argue if need be, but I did let a lot of stuff slide once I was in love, cause I didn't want to lose her. It's like once she knew I loved her the balance of power shifted or something(and one thing to remember is the person with control in a relationship is the one who cares least...deny it all you want, but really take the time to think about it, it makes total sense when you break it all down). Now I know that being more agreeable, and letting stuff slide actually made me unattractive to her and pushed her away. Now I know in the future I have to cultivate the additude that I don't need someone else to make me happy.

why is the young girl image so pathetic
Posted: 4/24/2006 10:11:01 PM
Alis Kat-I said a lot of these girls have "daddy issues", and I think it's true. I agree with you that not having around a guy that will just put down his daughter is probably a good thing. There are all kinds of "daddy issues" though, and girls don't necessarily turn out wrong just cause they have no dad or a bad one, but a lot of them do, and end up turning to the "industry" or to the wrong kind of guy(often VERY much like their dad), to try to compensate for whatever it is that's missing when a girl has no father or a bad one. Girls can definitely turn out to be fine upstanding individuals with no dad, but generally it's girls with good fathers that turn out the best. Also girls with no fathers tend to be sexually active at an earlier age, it's a proven fact(studies), don't want to scare you, but it's true.

Some common Daddy issues:
1.no dad to speak of
2.a dad that was there, but didn't care enough to stick around
3.a dad who is there, but doesn't really pay any attention to his daughter
4.a dad who is there, but isn't a supportive father, puts her down, etc
5.a dad who is there, but gives her too much of the wrong kind of attention...ie:molester

All girls want a loving father, and a lot of girls can get really screwed up not having one. Could be worse though...guys with "Mommy issues" turn out to be serial killers, so it all evens out I suppose!

why is the young girl image so apealing
Posted: 4/24/2006 8:55:02 PM
Most women get involved in this industry cause they have low self esteem and "Daddy" issues from what I can gather. Their dads never gave them enough attention(or too much of the wrong kind if you catch my drift), or were never around to begin with, and this is the way they get attention from men to compensate for it. Once the good money starts coming in too, it's hard to quit.
I never really thought much about it, till an X started doing some amature stripping. I didn't think I'd care, or would be okay with it, but I definitely wasn't. As a guy you don't really think about stuff like that when going to a strip club, that all these girls are someones daughter, sister, etc. When someone you actually care about starts to get involved, it can really change your perseption. I don't enjoy the clubs as much now, cause I always think of her when I go. Don't get me wrong, I still go, and I still enjoy them for what they are, it's just sad I guess in a way that so many women take the easy way out, cause you know MOST aren't happy doing it...why do you think they all get liqoured up or snort coke before they go on stage hmmm?

Random Bird-You'd rather watch freakin cheerleaders "during a punch up"!? What kind of hockey fan are you and what the hell is wrong with you!? LOL! Other then when you see a nice goal, the only time you see fans standing and aplauding during a game is when a fight breaks out. Hockey without fights is not hockey IMO, but to each their own I guess...

We as Canadians can't really say much with regards to cheerleaders at hockey games. I have seen them in OHL arena's before, Ottawa has them(or did when I was there a couple years ago), and I believe Barrie does too...I think Saginaw as well, but they are American I guess(OHL team though). I agree it is kind of lame wherever it is, for hockey anyway...maybe I'm just a traditionalist with some things I guess.

Sex with someone you're in love with vs. casual
Posted: 4/21/2006 4:49:09 PM
In my experience, comparing both, there is no comparison really. Not to say you can't have great casual sex I'm sure, I just never have. It was really good, don't get me wrong, I mean I'm a guy and it's sex, duh! Still it doesn't compare to sex with someone you actually care about, not for me anyway, not even close.

Pride Vs UFC?
Posted: 4/19/2006 11:09:34 PM
I got to agree with PV...Coleman is likely the favourite against Shamrock. He has only lost to the best fighters, and Shamrock has done NOTHING in years...he was never that great ever anyway. He only dominated a lot of early UFC fights cause he was fighting nobodies.

I agree with both of you, the guys at Hammer House bug my a$$. Simms is okay...he goes for it at least unlike the other two, but he sucks. I never liked Coleman, and I especially don't like Randleman. They both are boring lay and pray artists, that burn out after 5 minutes. Randleman talks way too much smack for a guy that always seems to never live up to his words. He talks like he honestly believes he's the best fighter in the world. He always seems to lose against top guys, or else lays on a guy the whole fight and rides out a decision. They way he talks you would think he's beaten all the top guys, and he's the most exciting fighter going this side of Wanderlei Silva. He and Coleman have always bugged me...BORING.

^^^^^ LOL, figured it must be him. I know there are others besides the Trigg/Hughes 2 fight, but I couldn't think of any specifics. I can remember wondering a few times what the hell was he doing, or thinking he stopped a fight too early or too late on occasion. We all make mistakes, but he makes a lot from what I gather. I know if I were a fighter I would specifically ask NOT to have him ref my fights. He puts guys lives and careers in danger with his incompetence.

With regards to bad reffing, I'm curious as to who you think is the worst PV? IMO it has to be Mario Yamazaki. He misses a lot. Remember when Trigg nailed Hughes in the nads with his kick? It looked like he was going to step in, then let it go cause Trigg was on the attack. There are other things too, just can't think of any off hand.
Herb Dean seems like a decent ref to me. He noticed Sylvia's arm breaking in that fight with Mir. I didn't see it at the time, and was ragging on him for an early stoppage...till I saw the reply of that forearm popping!
