Visited Spud over the weekend and considering he has been in the hospital for three months now I
am astounded at how good his spirits are. He certainly appreciated our visit but be prepared to don
a gown up and snap on a pair of latex gloves to enter his room.
That day he had a test done to determine how to tackle this latest infection. He is also having problems
with his circulation so has an apparatus that ensures that it is flowing efficiently.
I know I would go stir crazy sitting in the hospital for three months. I can't imagine how restricting
that must be for Spud.
He sure misses hanging out with everyone. Take a moment if you have some free time and go visit him.
It's pretty lonely for him.

I will have to confess my sins another time Golden_Prince. FYI, I read that later and was likely
more shocked than you. That's what happens when you change your status. LOL.
It turns out that
we
are going to the second house party
we
were invited to as it is the only
fair way we could sort out
our
plans and options.
I will have to catch that dance another time GP.

I am going to try to visit him this weekend.

To quote one of my friends, the honest truth is I exercise because "food is my weakness". I do
LOVE to eat and frankly there isn't much I don't like. Exercise allows me to continue to enjoy life
to the standards that I
enjoy
participating.
The Grouse Grind has been my obsession the past three years and I try to alternate with running,
cycling, hiking, dancing, roller blading and walks. The GG is a quick, convenient cardio workout
which I will do alone or with friends. I have registered for my third and fourth half marathons
this year to keep on track and plan to do another hike up the Chief and hope to attempt The Lions
this year. [on my bucket list]
I have never been much for gyms but have one conveniently located in the building where I work
so I have no excuse and admit to visits when I need a quick and sweaty workout before a volunteer
shift or to enable me to do an activity right after work.
There is only one other activity/sport that I enjoy because it gets me hot and sweaty but damn
that seems to be in short supply these days.

Sounds to me like the Grouse Grind is like the opera or ballet. You either love it or hate it. For me it is
a short-term outdoors challenge that beats an hour at the gym any day.

Offensive body odor from a friend or coworker: How do you tell them?
Posted:
7/14/2009 1:59:52 PM
I always make sure I smell pretty!
Lots of people think they smell pretty. And they smell pretty (bad) to other people.
Awww, J in SD* apparently doesn't like my scented deodorant.
Since writing that a year ago, I will update that statement. Some of the organizations that I volunteer
for have a strict "no-scent" policy for volunteers which includes body sprays, lotions, perfumes. I
support this as I know lots of people that have allergies to scents. This policy makes sense out of no
scents.
I agree there are some who wear too much scent but the OP was referring to those who had offensive
body odor and looking for suggestions on how to tell them.

^^^ Eventually the caked dirt just falls off. Let the matter take care of itself.
Thanks for all the wonderful comments/laughs and emails letting me know this had been dredged up again.
One year later [and a lot of checking of armpits
] I don't think anyone felt close enough to the person
in question to tell him/her. Sad.
However it does remind me that I should have another martini party. A few threads were started

Happy Canada Day
Posted:
7/2/2009 7:21:37 AM
I thought this worthy of sharing:
A Love Letter to Canada
, By Robin Esrock
Robin Esrock shares all of the reasons he is madly in love with Canada.
My first draft for this love letter began: “Shall I compare thee to a hot summer day? Fireworks erupt and the BBQ steams a sweet sticky scent into the air, both driving my neighbour’s dogs insane.” It went on to praise the 10 provinces and 3 territories, the virtues and industriousness of our people (IMAX, Insulin, Basketball), the extraordinary natural beauty, coast to coast. I had a few lines about our money, our artists, our national temperament, our national sport (watching our teams crash out of the Stanley Cup). Said the letter: “We mine over 60 minerals inside the world's 9th largest economy, but have a healthy respect for nature and enjoy the outdoors. Unless it's freezing the carrot off a snowman, in which case, we are known to enjoy underground heated shopping malls.”
But I knew something was missing, and if you’ll indulge me a few moments more, I’d like to share some vignettes.
A 23 year-old Brazilian girl is having a BBQ. She works two jobs, one as a nanny for a family in the suburbs, and they are throwing a celebration because she has just received her permanent residency status. From a poor background, offering little opportunity for education or much else, she has worked her way into Canada at great personal sacrifice, and promises to accomplish much. There is a speech, and she tears up, and in her face I see a tough past and promising future. This is Canada.
Auschwitz, Poland, 1942. Condemned prisoners arrive by cattle car carrying the few belongings they haven’t sold for their survival. Immediately, their bags and battered suitcases are confiscated. Family heirlooms, wedding rings, and anything of value stripped away, replaced with a striped uniform and numbered tattoo. The goods are transported to a large warehouse on site, which fills up so quickly another is needed. To the prisoners, these warehouses represent a wealth of material treasure, cherished memories, and most importantly, hope. They give the warehouses a nickname. They call them Canada.
In May 2004, I was sworn in as a Canadian citizen. The day before, a car had run me down at a Vancouver intersection, breaking my knee and setting me on the path to travel journalism. I popped a small pill of morphine before I settled in the front row of the courthouse, my leg heavily strapped up. Missing the ceremony would delay the process, and after five years I had waited enough. My older brother immigrated to Vancouver without once having stepped foot in Canada. I followed him 18 months later in the same manner. What made me leave everything I know behind on the other side of the world (South Africa is literally the opposite side of the globe) to start fresh? Very simply, the answer is Canada.
For all the negative news you might read in the newspapers, for all the economic challenges we face, the rising crime, reports of corruption, environmental disaster, it pays to put things in perspective. I moved here, along with so many others, because Canada offers a better life. By my reasoning and research, the best life I could hope to find. I didn’t need UN reports and various research indexes to tell me that the quality of life in Canada is amongst the best in the world. It would take me a year before I could find a good job. Longer still to reestablish the kind of friendships I had lost. Through it all, I felt safe, I felt welcomed, and I felt that anything is possible because the opportunity exists. Ten years later I have a successful career, a TV show no less that pays me to travel the world; my dream job. This is Canada.
My first love letter lightheartedly identified modern icons of Canada, from yoga-stretching hippies on the West Coast to foot-thumping lobster chompers in the Maritimes. We have wolves and cougars and bears and moose, but our national animal is the beaver: industrious, capable, a bucktooth smile for teamwork. We embrace the outdoors, the big prairie sky, the Albertan Rockies, the Quebecois’ providing tenacious unity in diversity. Sports, science, comedians, writers – for a relatively small nation, we have had a relatively large impact on the world, even if sometimes we feel they don’t exactly notice.
My second love letter is a lot more personal. I love that I can drive on a highway for days, meeting friendly people along the way, chewing on eye candy throughout. I love that it’s safe, that politicians are called to task, that our much criticized medical system helps me every time I’m sick. I love conversations with immigrant taxi drivers and nurses and dock workers and computer scientists who work hard and have made great sacrifices to be here. I love drinking tap water. I love the efficiency of our transport system, the police, the phones, the Internet. I love that our Canadian teams are always the underdog. I love our beer and wine and fresh seafood and healthy beef. You can criticize everything I love, and sure there’s room for improvement, but compared to just about any other country on the planet, things could not get any better. And that, in the end, is Canada.
Happy Canada Day.

What are YOU doing on Canada day?
Posted:
7/1/2009 4:10:01 PM
I climbed one of the trails at Grouse Mountain, had an early lunch at Taylor's Crossing in North Vancouver.
Checked out Canada Day Festivities at Richmond Park in Burnaby but were too late to check out the band
Rainshadow. I am proudly wearing my Canada Day Maple Leaf on my cheek, played bingo and watched
everyone having fun at the Dunk Tank. Getting some rest before heading to the Elephant and Castle for
dinner with a meet up group and then going to watch the fireworks at Canada Place.
Back to work tomorrow.
I hope everyone has fun today enjoying being a Canadian. It sure makes me proud!

a weekly ACTIVITY for POF? any takers?
Posted:
6/19/2009 4:59:27 PM
There was a ball game and tail gate party at Nat stadium done as a daytime family event
Yes that was a lot of fun! Organizing a similar event again this year has been on my mind but I
have been crazy busy with my own life.
The problem (me thinks) with "weekly" events besides the fact that
host/hostesses are
restricted to only two events per month, period
is that the same old, same old attend. It
is great to see some
new events
- bike ride etc. There was also an event at a Giants game
as well. Administration however prefers a "Meet and Greet" before hosting a viewing or
participating event.
For those who complain about non-local events, consider hosting/posting an event yourself.
That is how I got involved in hosting.
Hope you all have a long of fun.
Me also thinks Balled Eagle is rather distracted looking for
eagle tail feathers.
He appears
to be a tad excited about his upcoming visit perhaps??

How many people have you met in person??
Posted:
5/20/2009 6:51:18 AM
I have met lots of people from attending events and hosting events and the odd coffee date. I think
180 people would be a moderate guesstimate. Let me do the math. 3 years; average of 5 people
per month. Shrug. Some months it is more.
How many have remained friends that I see at least once a month or have stayed in contact with
separate from the events? About 20. How many do I keep in touch with randomly - far more.
How many did I know before I joined POF? One.
Was I outgoing when I joined POF? No, but I am now.
Do I think POF works? Yes. There are lots of POF success stories.
Have I met anyone who rocked my boat? Yes but the feelings weren't mutual or we only hung out
a few months before we both realized that we weren't a match.
Have I witnessed a lot of bitterness and "woe is me" attitudes?
Hell ya. How can someone
possibly be ready to date when they have to learn how to socialize in public again? If you don't
enjoy your own company, how can you expect someone of the opposite sex to want to?
It is all about attitude and the effort that you as a member want to contribute.

I am in utter shock after only now learning that A is no longer with us.
I had the pleasure of meeting A in 2006 at the POF New Year's party and got a real chance to get to
know him at the POF camping trip in Clearwater. We talked until the wee hours about the value of
family and friends. Everyone who knew him was aware of how important his children were. Not only
did he give great hugs but his smile was amazing contagious. A had an impact on so many and will be
missed!
Rest in peace A.

Michaelann, I am not entirely sure but I do think when a mass email is sent out it also goes to people
who have attended your events in the past. Therefore, if you signed up for an event then you
along
with other event attendees
to the host's events will also receive the email.
It might not make you feel better about it but it would explain why you received it. JMHO.

Same reason that people push on a door marked "Pull" or try to enter via the "Exit".
I understand the rant. Far too many people choose to respond with anger instead of reading the
whole message. There are lots that consider it a personal invitation too.
Could be one of the reasons why I rarely host events anymore. Once upon a time ... I didn't mind
the abuse. LOL.

Your Buddy Spud

Spud asked us to extend his appreciation for all the good wishes from his friends. Unfortunately he
didn't get much sleep as he woke up at 4am and couldn't get back to sleep. He had nodded off when we
got there so we didn't stay long. He obviously needed his sleep but was grateful for the visit. I am sure he
would welcome any visits.
Spud says that if there are no further complications with the IV medication he is currently on, the doctor
expects him to be released by the end of the week (approximately one more week). He doesn't like the
food so that's a good sign that he is feeling better (I hope).
He has also been watching the Canucks games too!

Awww Spud, I am so sorry to hear that you are back in the hospital again. I suspected something was
wrong when you didn't post a brunch but I had read (FB?) that you had just gotten out a few days before.
Unfortunately I was unwell for several weeks myself so I was keeping a low profile.
Yep I too met Spud at my first event and I still try to attend the brunches when I can.
I wish you a speedy recovery - I miss you and so do your brunch friends!

Bean Around the World has several locations in Vancouver and West Van - they have several fabulous
dark roasts.
Also try Cafe Arteggiano - great coffee, great beans!
