Mrfantastic1967 thanks for sharing your opinion of the place.
In the spirit of Christmas and the festive season I think we should applaud another member's attempt to organize an event when no one else seems to be stepping up to the plate and prefer to criticize.
Have a very Merry Christmas all!

Granville Street's last surviving cinema to close Nov 4
Posted: 10/21/2012 5:02:15 PM
I like International Village too and location-wise it is perfect for access from the skytrain. If you have ever gone to the Scotiabank Theatre on a Tuesday, you will see sold out performances for earlier showings. Lots of sales at the concession stands. It all equates to profits. How many things can you do for under $10? Many of the theatre-goers frequent establishments for food and beverages before or after their theatre experience?
All the effort seems to have gone into creating more pubs -- a profitable way to get the younger population into the downtown core but not attractive to those who will shop or patronize the culture offered downtown. But with the liquor laws being the way they are, and earlier closing bylaws and no smoking bylaws it's tough to say how the watering holes are faring. If you attend an event at the Playhouse, Queen Elizabeth or Orpheum Theatres and you can count on a $10 parking tab for your evening, after spending $30 a piece on a ticket.

Granville Street's last surviving cinema to close Nov 4
Posted: 10/12/2012 12:27:51 PM
I love going to a cinema and sitting watching a film on the big screen. I am old-fashioned that way. I have especially fond memories of sitting in the Denman Theatre and watching a couple of flicks, with a break in between to grab some sushi. It was such a unique and fun experience. Sure the seats were uncomfortable but the ambience and popcorn more than made up for it.
The VIFF will be affected by this most recent closure, as they have worked with the Granville 7 for years. They will lose a vital hub where they were able to offer a lot of screenings under the one roof. VIFF utilized a lot of theatres during its 31 years of existence, many of which are closed: Blinding Light!! Cinema, CN IMAX at Canada Place, Discovery, Robson Square, Royal Centre, Starlight, Vancouver Centre, Van East Cinema, the Varsity, and four Theatre Row venues: Capitol 6, Caprice, Paradise, and the Plaza. The last - Granville 7 will close November 4. Only three theatres remain in the downtown core, Cinematheque, Vancity Theatre, and Scotiabank Theatre on Burrard.
Other recent movie-theatre closures include Denman Cinemas, Station Square Cinemas, Hollywood Theatre, and Famous Players Richmond Centre 6 Cinemas. The Ridge Theatre has a lease until September 2013 but may close earlier if its landlord uses a demolition clause.
The trend is to build theatres on the peripheries of cities rather than in the centres to allow for free parking and I realize that the internet and free downloads has threatened their viability. We have already seen the loss of many bookstores and music thanks to the bigger warehouse set-ups. Where will it stop? What is next to go on the chopping block as we force smaller operators out of the downtown core or Vancouver proper?

Richmond father dead after falling from bike
Police warn of dangers of riding without helmet
By Alan Campbell, Richmond News August 16, 2012 A 63-year-old Richmond man has died after falling off his bike and hit-ting his head while riding with his two children.
Richmond RCMP were called to a pedestrian overpass around 2 p.m. Tuesday, after receiving a report of an injured cyclist.
An off-duty nurse who lived in the area noticed the man had fallen and told her family to call 9-1-1 while she rushed over to help.
Paramedics and firefighters were already treating the man for his injuries by the time police arrived.
Police learned the cyclist lost control of his bicycle while riding on the over-pass and had struck his head on the ground. He was not wearing a helmet at the time.
The man was taken to the Royal Columbian Hospital while officers took his children home.
Once officers informed the children's mother of the incident, police escorted the family to the hospital. Sadly, the injured man had died before they arrived.
"This is a very sad and tragic event that very likely could have been prevented if a helmet had been worn," said RCMP spokeswoman Cpl. Sherrdean Turley.
"Our condolences are extended to the family and friends of the cyclist. "We would also like to thank the off-duty nurse for her assistance and obvious dedication to helping others."
I feel very badly for the family, particularly the two children who were present when the accident occurred. Why would a father NOT be wearing a helmet?!
How do you feel about cyclists wearing helmets?

How do men feel when a woman contacts them first?
Posted: 8/10/2012 7:24:16 AM
I too am old-fashioned and I realize it is difficult for men to make the move and in the past so I have always answered messages sent to me. Frankly I don't think the same courtesy is extended by men. If the recipient isn't attracted to us, then not responding gets him off the hook, but enough "no responses" from the opposite sex and any woman will get discouraged and cease initiating.
Too many mixed messages from people not saying what they mean, and not meaning what they say.
I definitely think it should be a two-way street but the adage "there is plenty more fish" or "more candy in the candy store" seems to be a prominent theme.

This is one of the first events I attended and it was always my favourite. The event is child-friendly and you don't have to yell over music to be heard. We generally have a rather quiet area on the far side of the restaurant which allows for approximately 10 tables to ourselves.
Even if you are on a budget, join us for coffee.

Sudbury couple charged after dog dies in overheated car

Sadly the court system does not have the time to properly address such cases and most are routinely dismissed without charges. Who suffers in the long run? The animals, who cannot speak for themselves.

Sudbury couple charged after dog dies in overheated car
Posted: 6/13/2012 12:35:18 AM
We, the public, have to rely on a court system to enforce such penalties and that isn't likely going to happen, at least not in my life time.
Yes, Walts it is going to get a lot worse before it gets better because we as a society continue to allow it to happen and don't demand action against such stupidity. We all know the court system is tied up with other such trivial nonsense and the cases that really require hands on care never receive it because the court system is grievously backed up.
I can't offer any solutions but it is more than painful to see poor defenseless creatures suffer thanks to the ignorance of those who feel entitled to own a pet(s) but do not deserve the privilege of taking care of a pet, let alone a child. I don't need to remind us of how many cases we never even hear about. [shakes her head]

Sudbury couple charged after dog dies in overheated car
Posted: 6/12/2012 3:35:33 PM
CBC News
A man and woman from Sudbury, Ont., are facing animal cruelty charges after a dog died inside their car at the Vaughan Mills Mall, north of Toronto, Sunday afternoon. The dog was left in a vehicle at the Vaughan Mills Mall, north of Toronto, as temperatures outside soared to 32 C. Officials said the temperature inside the car would have been much higher.
A passerby alerted security personnel who opened the car, but the one-year-old Labrador died a short time later.
Matthieu Arbour, 21, and Angele Lazurko, 20, have been charged with causing unnecessary suffering to an animal.
They were released and are due in a Newmarket, Ont., court July 10.
I have a difficult time believing two "adults" would be so thoughtless as to drag their treasured pet to a mall while they did shopped and entertained themselves. Are you serious???
The scariest part of this whole account is the knowledge these two can breed thoughtless and selfish offspring just like themselves.
What do you think would be an appropriate charge/course of action for unnecessary suffering?

California man, 101, killed by car driven by woman of 91

Yes, I too found that very ironic. Most people at the age of 91 should
not
be driving.
I agree, much sadder when some who has not lived their potential, passes. Nonetheless I found the story very sad!

California man, 101, killed by car driven by woman of 91
Posted: 5/28/2012 12:54:53 PM
Wednesday, May 23, 2012 5:26 p.m. EDT
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A 101-year-old man crossing an intersection in the Los Angeles suburb of Burbank was struck by a car being driven by a 91-year-old woman and later died of his injuries, police said on Wednesday.
Otto Jensen, a popular local photographer, suffered serious injuries in the Tuesday evening accident and was pronounced dead at a hospital, Burbank police spokesman Darin Ryburn said.
"It's truly a tragedy, not only for Otto's family but for the city, to lose such a well-known figure here in Burbank. He lived and worked here for a long time," Ryburn said.
Jensen, a former boxer who first opened his photo studio in the 1950s, was grand marshal of Burbank's centennial parade in April of last year, when he and the city were both 100 years old.
He was crossing a street near that studio when he was struck by a sedan driven by 91-year-old Mary Beaumont, Ryburn said.
Beaumont was questioned at the scene and released, Ryburn said, but the incident remains under investigation.

I think this is so sad ... however I guess it is better than dying a slow, painful death from cancer.
Yours thoughts?

POF Events
Posted: 5/23/2012 5:27:29 PM
There used to be a variety of hosts/hostesses several years ago. Some activities were tailgate party/BBQ before a Canadians game, dinner at the Slocan Restaurant and a Giants game, salsa dancing at the Waldorf, dinner at the On-Lok Chinese Restaurant on Hastings - all accessible. Outdoor activities were also hosted - weekly climbs up the Grouse Grind, hiking the BCMC, hike to Stawamus Chief, walk in Central Park in Burnaby, visit to a Corn Maze, Monthly brunches at Fresgo's.
Remember anyone can volunteer to be a host but it requires meeting and greeting those that choose to attend the event and as a newbie to POF events introducing yourself to the host/hostess so they can make sure you are sitting in the same area as other attendees.
I stopped hosting because of the mail I would get - it ranged from outright nasty to threatening to report me because they didn't want to be notified via mass email. Change you email settings. I would also get people that would stalk me or not leave me alone. It wasn't a personal invite but many considered it such.
Instead of complaining, why not try hosting an event of your own if you think you have a great idea.
People will come if it is posted.

Honesty in profile descriptions.
Posted: 2/14/2012 9:55:38 AM
Far too much is misinterpreted by having to choose one category. I agree all relationships require a date to start. Relationships where someone is clearly specifying marriage leaves no room for misunderstanding but it is even harder to second-guess someone's intentions.
I decided to try contacting a few gentleman whose profile(s) sounded interesting and was surprised they went unanswered. It is likely I won't be doing that again for a long time.
Bottom line is someone has to make the first move. If there is too much ambiguity and doubt then don't bother making contact. Only you can sift through the contacts and judge what is real and what is worth pursuing or investigating further.

@TheCritic - I disagree. It is the way the system is set up and has been for years. All the dedicated forum violation watchers are quick to alert the moderators if there is a subject that is redundant, done-to death, etc. Besides, your response isn't even answering the question.
I used to live near the seawall and found that any time I was stressed or blue I would head for a walk on the seawall. Within 5 minutes of getting there I would lots to smile about. People watching in Vancouver is great!

Christmas Get together at Admiral Pub in Burnaby
Posted: 12/27/2011 6:11:58 PM
It's a shame your first experience at an event was not a great one. My first experience was at a brunch and I can honestly tell you I was so petrified I didn't move from my chair. I was fortunate that someone sitting at the table, and also the person who I contacted beforehand to attend with, knew about a dozen people and they visited her at the table and I consequently got introduced to them.
Each event I attended there would be a few familiar faces and eventually I decided to host a few events and that really brought me out of my shell.
I too have benefited from some wonderful friendships made through POF and have always believed that you meet far more people when you step away from the computer and actually attend an event.
I too encourage you to try again and definitely bring along a couple of gal pals if it will make you feel more comfortable.

RIP Scooter/ G-Scoot - Please Everyone Ride Safe!
Posted: 9/19/2011 7:38:09 PM
Thanks for starting this thread Andrea.
I will keep checking for the memorial service details.
Last time I saw him we were in attendance at the same party a friend hosted last month to celebrate three August birthdays. It was the second year that I had the privilege of celebrating his birthday with him.
The thing I loved most about G-Scoot was his wonderful hugs and huge cheeky smile. He would give the shirt off his back to help anyone, without question, without hesitation. He had a heart of gold and held centre stage amongst his harem of female friends. He had many male friends who witnessed first hand his generous kind nature. A lot of his friends made is acquaintance through POF, I am one of them.
You will be missed G-Scoot! My condolences to your friends and family during this difficult time. The world has lost a good spirit.

and not so focused on meeting "the one".

- hiking
- being able to jump in a lake (or any body of water) on a hot day
- eating ice cream on a hot day
- eating chocolate for dessert at lunch time, knowing you are meeting friends and indulging in more chocolate
- the smell of roasted peanuts at a baseball game
- blowing out candles on a birthday cake
- knowing the weekend is only 2 more days!!

... He doubts that the iPhone app alone will help him substantially increase his current revenue of
more than $1 million per month. Doing that will likely require him to either create a sister site
that primarily has paid memberships or convince Plenty of Fish users to upgrade their memberships.
I found it interesting to note that Marcus himself did not find love on the internet:

technology consulting company. They married in Mexico in April.

"Markus Frind was fresh out of BCIT when he launched Plenty of Fish in 2003; now it’s one of the world’s most popular Internet dating venues."
