bad spellers? what's with that?

Nope, not just you, it drives me nuts too. Terrible grammar will do it to! The whole 'your' versus 'you're' thing, and similar examples, can really turn me off a profile. There's a certain margin of error in which it's silly to nit pick, but past that...*shudder*

What turns you ON when you see a guy
Posted:

Things that make me go 'yum' on first *sight* (and thus, mostly physical):
-tall (6'2" or above gets bonus, as I love my 3-inchers)
-charismatic, a sort of air of quiet confidence
-athletic (not necessarily muscular, but 'active'...nice shoulders!)*rowers get extra points!!*
-clothes that suit them
-the black hair/blue eye combo is just...wow. I've actually had to stop and catch my breath.
-comfortable nerdiness...the kind that doesn't take away at all from the 'male-ness'
-returning a look eye-to-eye (mmmmm)
-that sort of lazy smile
-strong jaw and cheekbones
-an easy laugh
-masculine grace
...now, if one of those types would just seek out the quiet girl in the corner, things'd be great!

Sorry lovelies, I'm out for now as I was by far the youngest little fishie in there. So, even though I do have an internet crush on one of the 30-something gents in that pond there (
) , I'll pass on this round, unless there's a mass sign up in my demographic...or I change my mind. Eh, I've still got time, we shall see!

Ladies...what do you think when
Posted:
7/17/2006 6:47:10 PM
Well, I'm honestly hoping it's not that big of an off-putting factor! Looking at it from the other point of view (although, granted, I'm female and 20, not male and 30), it's entirely possible that 'it just hasn't happened'. Seriously, if he's a really nice guy, the two of you are in to each other, and the relationship is otherwise going well, why would it be a big deal? Unless, of course, he has the desire to remain one, and you, well, feel differently. Then I could see it being a problem, but this?
...and hey, who knows, maybe he has a natural, untapped talent?

Growing Up Vancouverite
Posted:
7/17/2006 6:28:01 PM
Alright, so I've lived in/around this lovely city for nearly 21 years, born and raised. Now, I'm sure many of you have lived around here much longer than that (
), and I've decided to put forth a question, in the interest of 'sharing the wealth of knowledge' you might have. Question is this:
What are your favourite:
a) delis/restaurants/cafes/hot dogs stands/etc
b) theatres/galleries/poetry jams/etc
c) trails/parks/caves/etc
d) stores/boutiques/blanket sales/etc
e) (le random)
...that aren't marked in the tourist books? I work in a restaurant in a prime tourist location, and when they ask me about places to go, I find I'm almost reluctant to share some of my favourites...does that make me just a little evil? But, since I've managed to overcome it (sometimes), I'm hoping you will too! Share with everyone! (namely, me)
A couple of mine, to get things rolling -
a) La Galleria in Edgemont Village, North Vancouver - best sandwiches you'll ever eat, I promise you. I recommend the prosciutto, but that might be my Italian half spreading bias. If you go at lunch, you can call in your order, or you're facing a loooong line-up, and the sometimes possible tragedy that they'll run out of baguettes!
**and**
c) J'adore the Nitobe garden on UBC campus, when it's not busy. Also (though I hate to share), the little garden across from the art gallery steps is a heavenly break from the crowds on Robson. Grab a hot dog, run up there, and just decompress. Dundarave Beach after dark...not as busy once the sun goes down as Ambleside, and a lovely spot to sit and think.
**and**
e) A seabus ride when it's raining. Driving down 10th Ave in the fall. The Blarney Stone on Saturday nights. Calhouns all night long.
Please share!

I think I have one that beats all for sheer randomness. I was on the bus to work last week, from the North Shore (where I'm living this summer) to Gastown (where I work). I was sitting on the forward facing two seat in front of the back bench, behind the side facing bench. This guy gets on at Phibbs, sits in the seat right perpendicular to me, takes a can of beer out of his pocket, and pours it in his travel mug. He spends most of the rest of the trip muttering about girls taking their clothes off across the street from a fire hall, swearing when the bus goes over a bump and 'shakes his beer', and staring at me, while I pretend to be oblivious listening to my music. Anyways, that's all weird, but not really crazy. However, near the end of my trip, the fellow reaches into his backpack, and pulls out:
...a crab. A live one. No safety elastics, still squirming around. He talks to the crab for a bit before shoving it back into his pack, then gets off across from the No. 5 Orange. WTF?

Favourites Lists
Posted:
7/6/2006 11:01:25 AM
Maybe a bit of a random question, but something I'm curious about. I've found that, when looking at a guy's profile, if he's on over 25 or 30 people's favourites lists, I think "Oh, they're likely out of my league, then." Probably stupid, yes, but eh, it's what I find happens automatically. So, the question is this:
Do you ever feel intimidated by a person of the opposite sex's favourite count?

Do men think women women wearing glasses are sexy?
Posted:
7/2/2006 4:58:05 PM
Well, I wear contacts most of the time, but if they're bothering me or if I was in a rush, I'll wear my glasses...haven't noticed any more attention then, but I have had it explained to me WHY I don't get approached when wearing them. I believe he said it had something to do with my height and eyebrows being scary, but he was drunk, so I don't know how much faith to put in that assessment
I do have one picture on my profile in my glasses though...they are thick, black, and supremely dorky. I love them.

What do you find beautiful?
Posted:
7/1/2006 11:49:15 AM
Out on the water in the late afternoon in Deep Cove, the breath rushing steadily in and out of your lungs, icy shards on the way in and white mist on the way out, even in time with the bite of your oars at the catch and the the liquid tug at the smooth finish. You're in a single, less than half an inch of hull between you and the rushing water, and the fierce concentration you once had to use to keep your handles level and shell balanced has faded with long practice, so the balance is in your centre, not your calloused hands. The water is calm, there's not a breath of wind in the air. The sun hasn't set, but it's slowly reaching down to brush at the tops of the trees on the surrounding hills, setting glass windows afire. You let it run and square your port blade, and as the stern swings around your view shifts from a small, rocky island with a crown of evergreens, to the sloping shores of the cove. The boat house beckons you back with the promise of rest and warm, bulky clothing, but for now you're comfortable in thin, close layers. There's one particular tree on the shore, a king of trees in fact, that's wild with an autumn fire of leaves. There's smoke pumping from a chimney somewhere beyond, and on a slow breath in, you smell that scent what's only there in the autumn, that crisp, faintly spicy scent of woodsmoke. The blue of the sky is gradually deepening, and you once again point your bow towards 'home'. Once you're in and the comfortably routine chores of washing down and putting away have been completed, you know it's only a matter of time until a berry scone from Honey's, a hot shower, and a crackling fire and comfy couch.
That's unbelievably beautiful to me.

Happy Canada Day!

Hah, got you all beat. I get to spend my Canada Day....working! No no, not the kind where you get off early enough to go enjoy the BBQ with friends and toss back a few pints. The kind where you start just before the festivities begin, and spend the next 8 hours working as a hostess while everyone else 'celebrates' on the patio...
Ah well, I get to be Canadian all year, so I suppose it's not all that bad. Happy Canada Day everyone!

Shower vs.. Bath
Posted:

Mmmm, a kind of hybrid, actually. A shower, but sitting down in the bathtub...so incredibly relaxing, like bathing in a waterfall, and you don't have to sit around in increasingly cooler water. Pure bliss. Oh, and the lights must be turned OFF.
I so miss this when I live in res, but there's no WAY my butt's going anywhere near the bottom of those showers...

What's your poison..
Posted:

Drink: vodka cranberry, sour apple martini, evergreen
Wine: Red, preferrably pinot noir or cab sav
Beer: whatever's put in front of me. Only when someone buys a pitcher...I'm not terribly fond of the stuff.
Shots: china white, grasshopper, orgasm, or straight up tequilla
**note: when one takes a bartending course, one learns to mix drinks with coloured water, with two exceptions: when learning to draw draft beer, and when learning to layer shots. These two things must be done with real alchohol, and said alchohol must be disposed of somehow

I've never even heard of those methods! I always put my bra on by sliding on the shoulder straps, adjusting the cups over the girls, and then reaching behind and hooking the strap. Reverse that if it's one of my strapless ones. I never knew I was weird? Those other ways sound uncomfortable!

Knee Injury
Posted:
6/16/2006 11:24:22 AM
If it suddenly appeared in both knees, it's unlikely it's an ACL or MCL tear, which is definitely a good thing. However, please trust me on this one, knees are NOT something you want to take any chances with - I'm only 20, and I've got a messed up knee to deal with for the rest of my life because I pushed it too far too fast after an injury. I agree with one of the posters above who said something about your shoes - that's a likely suspect, especially if you're running on concrete. You can take something for the pain, but don't assume that the problem goes away with the pain, and make absolutely sure you go to a doctor, preferably a sports med. Yoga is definitely great for down the road, but first things first, get it checked out, and if you get sent to physio, STAY in physio until THEY tell you you're finished, not until you 'feel better'. Oh, and down the road, if you want a workout that's a little (lot!) less brutal on your knees, I highly recommend rowing :)

Favorite sport?
Posted:
6/12/2006 9:56:11 AM
To 'play' - Rowing, hands down, no question. I've been rowing since I was 15, and coaching since I was 18. There's nothing like being in a shell on the water in the pre-dawn hours. I've been off the water for a bit due to some conflicts, but 6 years of waking up at 4:30 gets conditioned into you! Ahhh, I want to get out now!
However, rowing is fairly dull to watch generally, so for that side of it it would be hockey. Of course, watching the men's heavy weight rowing team while on land is a completely different story...

whats your favourite Classical piece?
Posted:
6/7/2006 6:40:45 PM
There's one particular version of Kyrie Eleison (the recording I have is the Benedictine Monks of St Michael's) that is my current obsession. Otherwise, one of Mozart's Requiems, or Pachelbel's Canon or Ave Verum Corpus as sung by the Vienna Boys Choir (adore them in general), or if we go a little more modern anything from the soundtrack of my favourite movie (Les Choristes), particularly Sentier de Gloire. In case you couldn't tell, I'm partial to choral, but when the mood strikes, I'll go all out orchestral, I just never remember piece names. I can also be rather partial to trumpet concertos...probably because I've been a trumpet player for 11 years? I tend mostly to minor keys, and earlier composers, but by no means is that a blanket statement. Good post!
To someone above who mentioned Carmina Burana...I liked it until I had to sing it in choir. Very, very, VERY high for sopranos!

weight loss techniques..
Posted:

^^Correction, swimming is an incredible cardio workout, as it works all the big muscles, and a neat little addition is that you won't kill your joints. I've got a bad knee that won't let me run, so after my workout, I swim lengths...it's been working for me so far! You want a REALLY good workout, I recommend erging. Rowing and cross country skiing are the best full body workouts you can get, and erging will give a similar result...but make sure you get someone who knows (most gym staff don't) to show you how! Otherwise, you won't get the full benefit, and/or your back will make you very, very sorry.

Life and Death

Not parents, but I lost my grandma, who I was very close to, on January 15th this year. The rest of my family had gone home for the night, but I decided to stay at the hospital in a chair beside her, and she passed just after midnight holding my hand. There was a crazy series of events after that, and I'm a very different person now than I was 6 months ago - someone who is, apparently, according to my uncles, a whole lot more like my grandma was. No visible rituals, but she's definitely with me in mind when I'm dealing with something tough. Definitely an improvement on the irresponsible little brat

Sounds like it could be a lot of fun, but can we wear leg-type clothing, too? I think the lovely POF-ers have seen quite enough of my legs for a while

how do your pick up women at the gym

Carefully.
The only time it's ever happened was a while back, I was doing a 60 minute steady state on the erg, and some guy sat down on the one next to me, cranked the fan up to 10, and started erging like your typical gym monkey - all back, up and over the knees...ouch. He died in about 5 minutes, then turned and offered to show me 'how to do it properly'. Might've worked, were I not a rowing coach who then told him the best way to deal with what would be his bloody sore back the next day.

First kiss.....

First kiss, I was 13 at a New Years party my brother was throwing that I had somehow talked my way into being allowed to attend. At midnight, a friend of his grabbed me and gave me my first...I think he was 18 at the time?
I still haven't had my first 'real' or 'significant' kiss
Sad, I know...

hiding on MSN

Unless I'm moving and my computer is disconnected, my msn is almost always signed in, and where most people would sign out, I simply appear offline. Then again, I'm a student, and I'm tied to my computer most hours of the day. I do block people, but almost never permanently.

Ah, it was great meeting everyone. I have to say thanks to you all for being nice to the 'new' girl, questionable PJ's and all.

Well, I certainly hope people are wearing PJ's, because I am...after a fashion. My PJ's aren't appropriate for public, and late notice means I couldn't go shopping, so here's to hoping my robe is acceptable...if a little short...

Hey Ragz, I emailed you back. I think it got through, but as you still have 'no one looking for hang out', I can't be sure. Ah well, hopefully!

Damn, I wish I had seen this sooner! I would so be there, but I'm on the UBC campus, and I can't get out/back :( And I can't email ragdoll because I'm a young'un.

Siblings, do you still act like kids sometimes?

Hah, my brother is 5.5 years older, and a daddy...doesn't make any difference. We still interact the same way we always have...well, we're generally nicer, but no more gentle. Of course, I always come out on the losing end of any physical struggle - my big brother is 6'6", built like a bloody tree, and he picks up extra baby money on the weekends working as a bouncer. I never have a chance...

How many languages do you speak

English is the only one I have with any fluidity. I can get by in French (thanks, UBC language requirement), and I used to be able to make myself generally understood in Italian...can pick it up a bit more if I'm around native speakers.

is it ok to laugh at the handicaped?

I laugh at a handicapped person all the time...
...relax. My mom has MS, and uses a walker or a scooter to get around, and if something funny happens to her, I'll laugh my azz off (so long as she's not seriously injured). But I'd never laugh at her or anyone else in her position simply for their misfortune, and I'll have very strong words with anyone who says mean things 'bout my mama!
