The New Season Of LOST
Posted: 5/21/2009 8:49:27 PM
That wasn't Jacob in the cabin, that Locke saw, and heard; I firmly believe now that it was the buddy who wanted to kill Jacob. That is what the ash surrounding the cabin was for, he was imprisoned in there, probably by Jacob. When Alana comes out of the cabin, and before she orders it burned, she says that "he hasn't been there for a long time". I can't remember off-hand who did it; but, someone disturbed some of the ash, which, I believe, allowed the prisoner to roam free.

Marvin Candle is a pseudonym that Dr Chang used in a few of the Dharma films; he also went by the name Edgar Halliwax in others.

I also agree that it wasn't Jacob who took the form of Christian Shepard, it was the other buddy.

I want to see the back story of the Blackrock. It seemed to me that it was the boat approaching the island, when buddy was telling Jacob how much he wants to kill him.

Horror on Canadian bus as man beheaded....
Posted: 8/2/2008 2:21:55 PM
I wouldn't be surprised to find out that the killer has murdered before. You have to look at what he did to go above and beyond what was needed to kill this young man. With serial killers, this is known as the 'signature'. The perp either had done this sort of thing before; or, fantasized about it for some time. This is why I agree with some posters in this thread, that he should be charged with First Degree murder; this was the result of some serious pre-meditation on the part of the attacker; this sort of stuff doesn't just 'happen in the moment'. Pre-mediation shouldn't just mean, he intended to kill 'this' individual; he had already decided that he was going to do it to someone; this unfortunate young man just happened to be the person 'in the wrong place, at the wrong time'.

Now, obviously the way events unfolded, I'm not saying that the perp 'was' a serial killer, they don't usually do these sorts of things in public; but, he certainly displayed similar tendencies. The perp was trying to 'destroy' his victim; as evidenced by the removal of the head and the mutilation of the body. I also wouldn't be surprised to find out that the killer was a 'closet' homosexual, and hates himself for it. It would seem to me that the possible 'motivation' for the attack was that he found the victim attractive; and, instead of submitting to his latent desires, he instead chose to 'destroy' the source of his frustration.

California bans trans fats
Posted: 7/26/2008 5:11:42 PM
I think that you have to, first, look at the cause. The cause is trans fats in food. How did trans fats get into the food; the producers of the foods put them there. The problem here, as I see it, is that this was a case where the industry would not 'police themselves'. If it was found that trans fats were bad, then the producers of the foods should have took it upon themselves to remove them. It's not like they 'can't'; since, trans fats are a manufactured substance. They obviously had no trouble switching over their production and processing lines to include trans fats; why not use the same 'ingenuity' to remove them? Is it because of 'cost'? I can't say for sure; but, it would seem that the industry that supplies the restaurants and super markets, 'won't' take it upon themselves to remove trans fats. This new legislation even being needed, should be seen as evidence of that. Simply, government wouldn't need to legislate such things, if the industry responsible would police themselves.

Israeli Academic Suggests Nuking Iran
Posted: 7/20/2008 4:01:26 PM
As much as this whole situation concerns me, I am more concerned about how quiet both China and Russia are being, regarding this issue. I can't imagine that either country would just sit back and watch Israel 'possibly' nuke Iran, and do absolutely nothing about it.

To your question, Dajeerling, regarding the lack of responses in this thread, IMO, I feel that many, if not most, people participating in this thread, and others like it (the Iran Situation), see similar talking points come up in all the threads; therefore, to them, it seems redundant to say the same things over and over. Now, this is just my opinion; I could be completely off on this.

Blackwater mercenaries - your tax dollars at work.
Posted: 7/7/2008 4:14:37 PM

well the company itself may be evil and taking its fair share but dont rag on the people doing the grunt work. They are mostly ex military or ex law trying to make a living doing what they know how to do. You never hear anyone complaining about the private contracted firefighters over there making well over 120,000 dollars at a time...

That's probably because the firefighters are there to 'save' lives, not 'take' them; but, that's just my opinion, I could be wrong...

Iran not worried about US attack.
Posted: 7/4/2008 5:50:45 PM

Iran's president has repeatedly said he intends to wipe Israel off the map

Actually, he didn't; and, it's been proven umpteen times, just on these forums alone.

As far as Iran needing nuclear energy for power, they have one of the largest known reserves of oil in the world. They do not need nuclear energy for peaceful purposes. They want nuclear weapons to threaten their neighbors.

In Canada, we also have rather sizable oil reserves; yet, we use Nuclear power. This is done because our country makes more money selling the oil to other nations, which makes us more prosperous. It's simple economics really; and, it makes sense.

As for the last sentence in the quote above; that sounds a lot like what the MSM wants people to believe. Last time I checked, all investigations have proven what Iran has been saying all along: that they are NOT pursuing Nuclear weapons capability. They ARE pursuing their established right to obtain means of power generation, through Nuclear reactors.

An Increase In Covert Ops Against Iran?
Posted: 6/30/2008 10:02:46 PM

I really don't think this information about Covert Ops should be out in the public.

Neither do I, which is why it seems suspicious; couple that with the Israeli 'exercise' earlier this month, which also probably shouldn't have been 'reported on', but was. There was a huge deal awhile back about the media 'outing' Prince Harry in Afghanistan; yet, no one appears to have an issue with these recent reports. It seems fishy; I dunno, I'm just sayin...

An Increase In Covert Ops Against Iran?
Posted: 6/30/2008 6:59:43 PM
@Crash

Don't get me wrong, sir; I'm not questioning the credentials of the reporter; in fact, it is my understanding, that Mr. Hersh is perhaps one of the few remaining 'credible' journalists remaining in your country. It just seems odd to report on something that should remain 'secret'.

(from the second article you posted)

Clandestine operations against Iran are not new. United States Special Operations Forces have been conducting cross-border operations from southern Iraq, with Presidential authorization, since last year. These have included seizing members of Al Quds, the commando arm of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, and taking them to Iraq for interrogation, and the pursuit of “high-value targets” in the President’s war on terror, who may be captured or killed. But the scale and the scope of the operations in Iran, which involve the Central Intelligence Agency and the Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC), have now been significantly expanded, according to the current and former officials. Many of these activities are not specified in the new Finding, and some congressional leaders have had serious questions about their nature.

(from another article posted in this thread)

The White House and U.S. military leaders have accused Iran of supplying training and weapons to terrorists who are attacking and killing U.S. troops in Iraq.

Setting morality aside for a minute; what is the difference in these two statements?

It seems somewhat ironic to me that if this article is true, wouldn't printing an article about it, defeat the purpose of 'covert' operations? Unless of course, it's just a mindf**k on the Iranians.

1) why the HELL are cars made to go this fast???? LOL if the highest speed limit is 100 (that i know of here in ontario), then why oh WHY do speedometers go up to 240? or is it 260?!?

I'm certainly not an expert; and, I'm sure there are many here who could shed some informed light on this. I 'believe' engines that are designed to operate at such high speeds (260 kph+) are done so as 'over-engineered'. This allows the engine to more easily handle the stresses at the maximum 'legal' speed limits. If they were to build an engine, that could only achieve the highest speed limits, the engine would wear out in no time (assuming planned obsolescence). You would have to drop in a new engine every year, depending on how much highway driving you do.

The Lord's Prayer in the Ontario Provincial legislature.

I also believe there should be one school board. Why the need for segregation? Why do Catholics need to be separated from every one else. If everyone supported one school board there would be more money for the kids..are really that's what it's about.

The reason it is like this, is that in the Separate School Board system, religion is taught as a subject, along-side Math and English. The problem is, it is ONLY the Roman Catholic religion that is taught, specifically the New Testament; depending on how you look at it, this could be perceived as indoctrination; but, that's for another discussion.

"Whereas Canada is founded upon principles that recognize the supremacy of God and the rule of law."

I don't see how this statement is being violated by this proposal.

Now, if it said 'supremacy of Jesus Christ'; or, 'supremacy of Bhuddha', there could be a case made; but, if I understand this correctly, they just want to have something that more accurately represents the diversity of religion in this country. I have no issue with the proposed change; but, that's just my opinion, I could be wrong...

I don't know why; but, Xmas keeps leaping into my mind; what did they do at Xmas time? Did he set up the tree in the bathroom; she could help decorate it, well, at least until she couldn't reach any higher. I guess he didn't have to worry too much about what to get her for presents: couple of big packs of toilet paper; some Crossword Puzzle books; a yearly subscription to Reader's Digest; maybe a 3 pack of air freshener.

Seriously, though, this is a very bizarre incident; I hope everyone involved gets the help they need. Other than that, I don't know what to say, other than....WOW!!

Writers Strike and Rehab -- Coincidence??
Posted: 2/8/2008 3:52:22 AM
See, this is where Hollywood lacks real insight...

What they should have done, was create a reality show, where they follow around a bunch of stars in a specific Rehab Center. They could vote people out, depending on their level of 'rehab', the least recovered wins; or, they could just give them some shock therapy, or something...

3 birds with 1 stone:

1. Stars get the rehab they 'need'.
2. Gives all the other people in the entertainment industry something to do.
3. A new show that generates some revenue, while the writers continue with their 'strike' thing.

Tiger attack victim was drinking, admitted taunting
Posted: 1/18/2008 6:41:45 PM
I think the concept of a Zoo is a good thing, in my opinion. Not everyone has or will have the opportunity to travel to the natural habitats of these wild, and beautiful creatures. So, to be able to go to one place, one location, and see these majestic animals, goes a long way to preserving the reverence of such creatures; at least in theory. In my opinion, having one or two animals of different species, (per zoo) is a fair trade, to instill some respect of these animals, in the humans who come to observe them. It is my belief that if there were no zoos, or some sort of similar 'sanctuary', there would be infinitely more people who remained apathetic to the plight of some of these species. It's one thing to see a tiger on TV; it's quite another to see one close up, with your own eyes.

OT - I too, believe that there are still many facts about this case that will come out. I mean, c'mon: first they said, 'no, we didn't do anything'; then it changes to, 'well we did some stuff; but not all that stuff'. I think it's reasonable to believe that there is still much those two young men are keeping from getting out, if only to not adversely affect the outcome of the inevitable law suits that will be filed in the near future; if they haven't been already. I feel badly for the family that lost a child; but, in this case: 'you get what you pay for', so to speak.

Empathy, Telepapthy etc...
Posted: 12/26/2007 12:27:47 AM
I am most definitely an empath; which, I discovered when I was fairly young. I was dating this girl, and she cheated on me; so, I had to end it. When the conversation turned to the breaking up part; she began to cry. Whether or not she felt remorse for the cheating, her sadness regarding the breakup was real; and, I could 'feel' all of it. It was like I was looking in a mirror, and breaking up with myself; it's hard to explain beyond that.

Probably the most powerful personal example I have, was when I was down in Florida, many years ago, with family on vacation. We were driving along the highway, and just before a small bridge, there were firetrucks and and an ambulance. We continued on our way; but, I felt strange. About an half hour later, we heard on the radio that a diver had drowned at that bridge (why the firetrucks and ambulance were there). When we got to our hotel; I became completely overwhelmed with emotion. I could feel the diver's emotional state, at the exact moment when he realized that he not going to survive his situation; I could feel his wife's anguish at losing her husband. Well, the emotions were too much, and I openly wept for a good 20 minutes; hard. My girlfriend at the time that was with me, didn't know what to do; because, she had never seen like that before. I didn't know what to do; because, I had never experienced that level of emotion from my empathy before.

Like some others have mentioned here: I cannot go into hospitals; which, has made me look uncaring; as, I've had close family that have died in the hospital; but, I could not go. There is far too much pain and suffering that bombards you, the moment you even get close to the building. Try explaining, though, that the reason you aren't coming to see someone you love die, because you 'are sensing the emotions of everyone in that hospital, all at once.' It tends to come off looking like an excuse. As far as malls, and in general, large crowds, I'm pretty good with that. I wouldn't say that I turn it on or off; more like it's on all the time; but, when I need to, I can filter it out. The only place I cannot filter, is the hospital. I think it has to do with the high concentration of 'negative' energy there. What I mean by 'negative', is the pain and suffering and death that permeates the walls. Don't get me wrong, there are those there who have come back from the brink of death, are convalescing, getting better; I can feel those too; but, they are horribly outnumbered by the other, unfortunately.

One kind of odd place that I cannot go to, is a strip bar. I feel the desperation of some of the patrons, there spending their hard earned cash on the closest thing to sex they may ever get. I feel the emotions of some of the dancers; who wish they could be anywhere else but there; doing something else for a living. They aren't there because the like it, they are there because it's a paycheque. Now, in the past this has gotten me into trouble with my friends, some of who have been known to like to go to the 'peelers', as they like to call it; but, most of my close friends understand that I am tuned to things they cannot sense, and accept my refusal to ever accompany them to such establishments.

yes, this was incredibly long-winded; sorry about that...

Sincerely

Rehiring a convicted killer as a teacher
Posted: 8/22/2007 3:33:41 PM
In my opinion, the guy really had no choice BUT to lie. Now, in no way am I condoning what this individual did, the lying nor the murder; I can just understand why he would lie. No one is going to hire someone who has committed an act such as murder; regardless of whether or not that person has been 'rehabilitated'. This leads to what I think is the bigger issue, when does someone 'pay their debt to society'? Are all people who get sent to prison, 'career criminals', or do some of them actually rehabilitate. I know that if I ever went to prison for something, I sure as hell would never want to put myself in the same situation, ever again.

There is a social stigma that attaches itself to those who have served their sentences though; and, it's this stigma that forces people to have to resort to lying about it. Is this guy sorry for what he did, that caused him to go to prison? Will he do it again? None of us know for sure, only this man does. I get the sense that people assume that because he lied, or rather 'omitted' his prior conviction, that he is a good candidate to be a repeat offender. I don't see it that way. It all hinges upon whether or not, this individual is truly sorry for what he has done, and will never again act in the same manner. I would prefer to give him the benefit of the doubt; because, I would like to believe that our prison system IS doing it's job. If it's not, then we might as well lock up everyone who ever commits a crime for life; as, they will never be rehabilitated.

This is just my opinion, I could be wrong...

Australia to Ban Aborigine Access to Alcohol & Pornography
Posted: 6/26/2007 1:58:59 AM
I'm honestly baffled by how quickly indigenous people lose the ties to their roots and way of life. Just like our Native population here in Canada, the Aborigines in Australia have bought into the attempt to 'civilize' them, with these same disasterous results. Who is to say that our way is better, or more fulfilling? You have these cultures that have existed harmoniously with each other, and Nature, for thousands of years; and, it only takes a couple hundred years to completely erase it. Before the colonists came along, they enjoyed a very happy and peaceful existence; why not just say, 'screw it, we're going back to the old ways'? They didn't have or need jobs, or money back then; so, why all the disparity in not having either now? It would seem to me that it shouldn't be too difficult to just return to life as it existed before; but, maybe that's all it takes, is a couple centuries of brainwashing, to believe that the way you have been existing in the past, is not 'human'.

Then you have the 'civilized' people scratching their heads, wondering what's wrong with these aboriginal folks? Why can't they just be more like us? Maybe that's it exactly, they aren't like us; and, we shouldn't have tried to make them believe they should be more like us. There is nothing wrong with being different, or living your life differently. Diversity in culture, is what makes this planet so fascinating; we should be celebrating that, instead of trying to homogenize everything into 'one' flavour. We should have left them alone, to enjoy the lives they 'want' to have, not the lives we 'think' they should have. This is just my opinion though, I could be wrong.

new non smoking laws July 2007
Posted: 5/15/2007 5:26:33 PM
It never made sense to me, why a bar or restaurant couldn't be 'for smokers only'. If people choose to smoke, or don't mind it around them, they could go there, and enjoy themselves. Meanwhile the other 15 places could be non-smoking like they are now; so, people who don't want to be around it, could do so. Oh wait, then the non-smokers wouldn't be allowed to go there, and we couldn't have that.

Who Owns What - Media Ownership in U.S. - and some in Canada
Posted: 8/1/2006 3:22:30 PM
I think the major obstacle the Internet has to overcome, is the insistence by many, that any information found there, is suspect at best. Another way to say this is, because some of the information on the Internet is false, ALL information found on the Internet is false. The logical counter-arguement should be, because some information on the Internet is true, ALL information on the Internet is true; but, this never seems to be the case. You see this all the time, even on the POF forums. If one person uses a site on the Internet as their "source" for information, people who happen to disagree with that view or opinion; use the generalized debunk of saying, "if it's on the Internet, it must be true!"

Why did the allies win WWII?
Posted: 8/1/2006 3:02:31 PM
I think another major problem the German's suffered was their lack of supplies getting to Rommel and his Afrika Corps; this, of course, was due to the fact that the allies had recovered an Enigma machine, and had deciphered the "unbreakable" code. Every time Germany sent supplies across the Med, they were intercepted and sunk by allied forces. This should have alerted the German's that their "unbreakable" code had been compromised; but, they didn't follow that to it's logical conclusion.

The thought keeps occuring to me that somewhere there could be a homeless person with one great idea, that could change the world; but, no one will listen, nor give this person a chance, simply because they don't have the "education" to back up their claim. It's not because this person doesn't want to get educated; it's the fact that they simply cannot afford the training necessary.

I think another problem that needs addressing is that so much of the youth of today are victims of what I call, the McDonald's Universe. In the McDonald's Universe, there is no time to "bother" to read or learn new things; they become "boring" much too quickly, it's all about the next "new" thing; I won't even get started on cellphones and IPods. I belong to a couple of forums; and the trend I see from many of the younger folks is they are unwilling to read a post that is more than a couple of paragraphs long. If they aren't willing to put in the work necessary, how can they be expected to want higher education?

So, in my opinion, the problem is two-fold: giving the opportunity to all who are willing, regardless of background, or financial status; and, getting people interested in and "wanting" to learn. Like I said, just my opinion; I could be wrong.

Sincerely
