Broken hearts? Heres an easy cure!
Posted: 11/22/2009 8:31:41 AM
I think that broken hearts, like nearly any of the world's problems, can be solved by one or both of two things:

1. Hand grenades

2. Rocket Launchers

If you have both of those, you hold the solution to all the world's problems, including broken hearts!

Safe dating in the internet age
Posted: 11/4/2009 6:43:16 AM
I did a google search on my name. Not that many results, as my last name isn't common at all. Found my website, and stuff about my eBay presence, as well as some computer game maps and scenarios I made some years ago.

But found there is some guy out in Nebraska with the same name as me. He appears to be a church pastor and active in foot races.

Actually surprised I didn't find any results from the police, as I used to be their IT support before I got tired of city politics.

Do I mind if someone googles my name? No. Do I mind if someone gets a background check? No, but then, I do find it kind of creepy, especially if only after one date.

I look at it like this: Google has only been around for 15 years or so. What did people do before then? Besides, Google doesn't help differentiate people with the same names. Pity anyone with a common name, like John Smith. I just googled that name, in quotes, and it returned almost six million results.

profile with face in the picture
Posted: 10/22/2009 2:26:49 AM
I have an interesting (Sort of) profile pic question:

I was browsing profiles the other day, and, being a railfan, one of them caught my eye. It was a pic of a woman inside a Pullman-Standard commuter coach. I recognized the interior of the car immediately.

Now, the orange interior cars, dating to the 1950s, were retired three to four years ago. The cab control cars were all gone even longer ago. Metra Rail reinstated ten or so standard coaches, but they have all new interors that are a rather sterile blueish.

Anyway, this woman's age as of now is 20, and given that the coach she is aboard, was retired at least three years ago, she had to have been under 18 when the picture was taken.

How does admin/site caretakers handle that? I mean, it is not a current picture, the old commuter coach interior gives that away, but it isn't something anyone without knowledge of railroad equipment would notice either.

If I were to report the picture, I don't think anyone who reviews it would really understand, and would've punished me or something.

2 weeks into a great new relationship and you win the lottery, now what?
Posted: 10/20/2009 9:34:39 AM
Not sure what I would do. First thought, is there would be some radical changes in my life. Yes, that is MY life.

First, I would get a house, and leave this apartment. THe landlord here is like a nazi (Even if you pay the rent on time, or early, and you stay quiet and keep to yourself, he still harasses you, mostly because he has an alcohol problem), and I would like a larger model railroad anyway.

Second: Bribe a doctor (This is Illinois- everyone has a price here) to reverse the order keeping me from driving, due to seizure problem.

After the second item is accomplished, get a decent car. But never drive it unless I need to. Got too many friends at the bus line now.

So where does this lead?

Well, it would be apparent that I fell into money somehow. If I were with someone, I would not say anything, until all the money has been spent or securely in a bank. That way, she couldn't get her mitts on it as easily.

Is it ever okay to resort to violence?
Posted: 10/12/2009 6:42:10 AM
Violence is only for extreme situations. For example, if I was on an airplane, and someone yelled out something about blowing the thing up, I would probably try to kick his @ss.

Thankfully I will likely never be in a situation like that; overall I do not like violence as a means of solving problems. It shows a lack of intelligence, that you can't use your head, and have to resort to pain to get your point across.

So far as relationships go, most normal, healthy adults know where to draw a line, where a spouse or signifigant other, is not in the same class as an airline terrorist. Therefore, they get very different treatment.

New Feature: I viewed

It is there, showing only one person, who, ironically I have not viewed.

However, I am not complaining at all- this person looked a lot like someone I needed to call about a computer repair, and this jogged my memory. Thanks, I guess, admin.

What Makes You Say, Yeah, Right?
Posted: 9/7/2009 5:59:51 PM
Simply put: I take someone's stated profile at face value, unless I have justified reason not to. However, it does say something about one's personality, if they say something like 'Princess', or for the really high-maintenance types 'Professional Princess' (Ever seen an amateur princess? Me either.).

Better yet, the really special types that have to put 'nunya' or similar there. Says a lot about someone's overall attitude, it seems (At least, it did when you read the rest of their profile).

As it stands, I am a PC technician, and proud of it! Building up my own shop from pretty much nothing, in the worst of times, without so much as a startup loan from the bank!

questions regarding frostwire, downloading true blood?
Posted: 9/4/2009 8:02:33 PM
Get a USB DVDROM. They're cheap online. What I have been doing, is buying external slim enclosures, and putting my own laptop DVDROM drives in them- the DVDROMs are pulled from upgraded laptops, that now have Combo or DVDRW drives in them.

Wii 9 Times More Reliable than Xbox 360
Posted: 9/4/2009 2:08:05 AM
While not the 360 type, a friend of mine went through three Xboxes. All suffered hardware failures. One of them, the motherboard seemed OK; the other two, the mobo was the issue.

Out of one of them, I pulled the DVDROM, and rewired the power connector to fit it into his PC. He liked the idea of having a DVDROM from an Xbox in his computer. Don't know why.

Failures in these advanced consoles are exactly why I do not do console gaming anymore. Really don't feel like shelling out major money for something that will not last.

Is having a car really THAT incredibly important?
Posted: 8/30/2009 7:23:49 PM
Ah, a fellow Pace passenger!

Just remember what Pace is _really_ an acronym for, contrary to their website:

Paranoia
And
Confusion
Everywhere

While most of the North Division drivers are fairly friendly, we have a few sour ones. Gee, can't see why... ahem... cough... despotic safety manager... cough... evil general manager... still is GM after 2 DUIs... cough... ahem... 9 hour days with only one bathroom break allowed... ahem... cough...

The other issue with Pace, it is very crowded, which will be worse with the arrival of the new ElDorado EZ-Ridier MK.2 30 foot buses.

Plus, depending where you are, the oh-so-fun breakdowns of the old Orion I Citycruisers (we call 'em 'Junkwagons'), which are 16 year old vehicles. But they are pretty to look at, better looking buses than the NABI 35-LFW buses.

Anyway, in any event, all Pace North humor aside, yes, the suburban buses run less frequent than CTA buses in Chicago. But Pace really does try to do their best for what they have.

Transport being an interest of mine, as I mentioned earlier, I see both sides of the coin here. The buses aren't that bad, and there is a lot of fun at North Division. Heck, I got tomorrow planned out. Getting on one bus at 7 AM, and I talked to a few of the drivers tonight, we got it figured where I can spend the entire day, 7 AM to 6 PM riding with drivers I know. Going on a Dunkin run in the morning, doing a lunch run for another driver in the early afternoon, going on a junk food run for a third in the early evening.

Should be fun!

Is it really that odd to not have a pet?
Posted: 8/30/2009 4:49:48 PM
I used to have a cat. She passed away from a tumor in her bowels, but she was 16 and had a good life anyway. I had her since I was in the third grade as a kid. I named her Annie, after Little Orphan Annie, as that was kind of her situation- she was an orphaned cat after her first owner was paralyzed in an automobile accident.

Anyway, I am still, 18 months later, sad by her death, and sometimes in the night, can almost hear her meowing. Then I wake up and realize it is a stray outside.

I want another cat, but I feel it is best to not get another one till I have 'moved on' past Annie's death. There is a stray at the shelter that I want to adopt, this one has been spayed and had her shots and all. I am thinking it over seriously tonight.

Now, I don't think it is 'odd' to not have a pet. For people that never have had one, they don't know what kind of affection they are missing. With cats I have had, once you win their affection, it is very hard to lose that. Pets offer a kind of love that humans _never_ will. Unconditional love. Annie, as I remember well, when we got her, we had to first find her, as she was roaming outside and slipped out of her leash. My folks looked, the paralyzed owner's mother looked, no one could find her. There I am, standing there, as mom told me not to go into the woods, and a small brown cat comes up to me, sniffs my shoe, and rubs against my leg. That was the cat, they said. I figured this one liked me, and she sure did from then on.

Is having a car really THAT incredibly important?
Posted: 8/30/2009 7:39:08 AM
Yeah? 'S that a fact? There are plenty of people out there too, that have health concerns (In my case, a seizure problem) that prohibits driving. I haven't actually had a seizure in a year, but that is because they got me on meds that work. Problem is, the medication bottle specifically says, do NOT drive while taking this.

Besides, figure it like this: I know most of the Pace drivers around here nowadays. Most let me ride for free. The reason, is that I am friends with the president of their union, and have helped out in many ways. Sort of have become a 'go-between' for all the drivers here. If there is an issue with division management, I usually help out with it.

Even better, on the Lewis Crosstown route, when I go riding around in the mornings on that route, the drivers send me on Dunkin Runs- there is a Dunkin Donuts about a mile from the end of the line/turnaround point. They'll send me in with $10, and tell me what they want, and I can use the rest of the money to get my own breakfast. Hence the 'Pace Breakfast Club'.

And I can also tell everyone about meeting customers on buses. I am in the computer business, run my own store. many of the drivers have even been good customers.

Not to mention that not long ago, I met a guy on the 572 route that had a semi truck worth of computers he wanted to get rid of. He was willing to give them away, so last week I had a truck from a large office, pull up to my store. I would say that ride paid off!

Honestly, Pace has been very good to me around here. Even if they do fix the seizure problem someday, I would stll not get a car. Figure all the business I do by bus. Can't forget that if I drove myself a couple weeks ago, then last week I would not have had a truck load of computers dropped off!

Now, to me, if a potential date did not have a car, yes that would be kind of limiting, but if it was meant to be, then it will be. I would go so far as to say, I would not date anyone who hated buses and would absolutely not ride one.

Single moms and pictures of their kids on profile

Never understood it. Best as I knew, that violates site policy, and is potentially dangerous. C'mon, if all the ladies around here are complaining about the sheer number of perverts, then WHY post a pic of your kid? To attract a much more dangerous form of pervert?

Doesn't make sense.

being scared of mummys
Posted: 8/9/2009 11:12:32 PM
Being scared of mummys. Hmmmm.... seems about like being scared of Zombies!

Oh, wait. Queen's English. I get it now.

Seriously, though, I was interested in someone who had kids. One time. I think in all honesty, she soured me on the concept of single mothers. Far too, tooooo much drama about a deadbeat dad. While I am very aware that there many mothers not looking for a replacement father figure, it just left a bad taste in my mouth, so to speak.

Besides, I really don't know much about parenting. And I can't ignore the fact that my home is filled with antique model trains. Figure that antique, fragile model trains + small kids hands = disaster.

Best of luck to everyone out there, with and without kids! Happy fishing!

Signs It's Over
Posted: 8/9/2009 9:50:01 PM
It is a sign it is over, when she writes a personal check for a computer from ya.

Happened to me. I am a computer builder by trade, and some years back, a woman wrote me a check for a very nice desktop unit. Well she did a stop payment on it and told me she didn't want me anymore. She still has the computer, too.

It was the last personal check I accepted in business, needless to say.

Dating while unemployed
Posted: 8/8/2009 10:49:42 AM

no job , no date
that is my opinion

Wow. Just. Wow. I was reading in the paper that here in my town, unemployment is over 20%. I think it may be higher than that even; nearly everyone I see seems to be looking for employment. Think about it: One in five, is out of work. For the most part, these people did not ASK to be unemployed. It just HAPPENED. Due to outside of their control circumstances.

Makes me all the more glad I work for myself. Kind of hard to lay off oneself, from one's own store.

But I do agree with what I have read- it is one thing to be idle, sitting at home all day watching the television. It is quite another to be actively seeking employment, against heavily stacked odds, or at least furthering one's education so when this whole recession is over, those people can find better work than otherwise would be available.

I use Christian-Other because, while I was raised Catholic, I do not adhere to that church, or any Christian Church. I read the Bible and go to church where I can feel the spirit of Christ and God at the most.

Open to interpretation, this 'Christian-Other'? Yes, but as stated, there are so many faiths, that the list would be endless, then everyone would ask for it to be shortened. I believe they covered most of the major ones, which is good.

Cassettes!! Bring them back please!
Posted: 7/29/2009 8:24:29 PM
Cassettes? No, I never have been into that.

However, I do have a sizable collection (Roughly 300 I think) 78 RPM records, from 1920 through the '40s. All still fully playable, and I have a decent Lloyd's turntable to play them on. It's the kind where you stack your records, one on top of the other, and they play in that sequence.

Most of it is the names in 1930s Big Band- Glenn Miller, Artie Shaw, Tommy Dorsey (Including Frank Sinatra's work with Dorsey in the crooning days), and others like that.

To me a CD is a little 'too' perfect, for this old music. I am a purist, I guess. Got to have the music in its original form. I have maybe three or five music CDs, and that is it.

Housekeeping --- Does a messy place turn you off?
Posted: 7/27/2009 3:58:34 AM
I'll admit it- my place is a bit of a mess right now. The important parts get cleaned regularly- there is no rotten food, no mold growing, etc..., but with two model railroads under construction (Adding passenger terminal to one, re-wiring the other), and hundreds of antique freight/passenger cars and locomotives under restoration, it is a 'busy' place.

It is, however, organized in a way that I know where everything is, even if it does not seem that way. If I need a caboose to match a certain locomotive, I know where it is at and what stage of complete it is in. If I need a certain tool, I usually can find it quick.

When the projects are complete, this place will be tidy again. I figure as long as I pass fire code inspections on the apartment, I am more or less OK.

Forum Policy Change - Profile Pic Required
Posted: 7/21/2009 11:40:59 PM
Not a bad idea. When I first created my profile, I relaized after creating it, that my camera was left at my shop. So for the first few days I did not have a picture. Obviously now I do.

May I suggest, give a grace period for uploading a picture- say, maybe three days or so. Remember, not everyone has a digital camera (My dad comes to mind here), and some would have to have digital copies made from a print film camera. Three to five days sounds like adequate time for this.

Communication stops

Very true. A while back I had a different profile (Long ago closed- this site, there is no leaving it for good!), and this was back when the IM was available. A lady and I started chatting, and it was going well. Then, for no apparent reason, she blocked me.

Didn't bother me, but it did have me concerned about if that block went into some database- if too many users, for whatever reason, block you, then what happens?

Some people are childish- they can't pony up and say, "I don't think we would be a good match", they just run and hide. I personally don't like those kinds of people anyway, so no great loss. After all, if you can't be honest and say what you feel, however can you expect to maintain a meaningful relationship?

But yes, there are channels to go through. Sounds like the guy was a total nutcase. I guess some have nothing better to do than cause trouble. Sorry to hear of your experience.

When are you most happiest?
Posted: 7/13/2009 12:45:19 AM
Me? I'm happiest when I am working on my antique model trains, equipment that was originally made in the late 1930s through the '40s.

I just put on some old 78 RPM records on the phonograph, and start restoring the cars and locomotives to operating condition. Nothing makes my heart beat faster than fixing a difficult, beat up locomotive, and applying power to it on my railroad; For some of these trains, this is the first they have run in maybe half a century. When the restored engine runs again, it is this overwhelming feeling of joy. Especially, if it is a steam locomotive, to watch the pistons and valve gear turn, and to see it run smooth as anything new, that is excitement and happiness.

I got an old Knapp/Bowser brand Mountain class locomotive- watching that old cast bronze engine effortlessly pull six or seven coaches around my layout- coaches that themselves are prewar and early postwar gems, that is a sight to behold, and it never fails to bring a smile to my face, more so when Glenn Miller's 'Chattanooga Choo Choo' is playing.

What would you compromise?
Posted: 7/4/2009 9:29:44 PM
Hmmm,
The only thing I really would not give up in a relationship, would be my model trains.

I didn't spend the past four years on this 150 square foot railroad for nothing!

Luckily, I have never been asked to give up my trains. Something to the reasoning that if I am home in the evening running four or five of them at once, it may be a better thing than being out elsewhere.

Dont contact me anymore some advice on that
Posted: 7/4/2009 8:47:57 PM
OP,
Do you remember the saying:

If you love someone, set them free
If they come back, they're yours.

Well, this situation is a little different, it goes as:

If you don't love someone, set them free.
If they come back, set them on fire.

You're playing with fire and very easily can get burned in a situation like this. I mean, if the told you to not contact her anymore, then easily the next step if you do, will be a restraining order. Or just a flat out arrest.

could favourite lists be seen by everybody
Posted: 7/4/2009 8:42:22 PM
The only benefit of this might be to prove a theory that women add each other as favorites, like some popularity contest or something.

Something like:

Oh, I got to a four digit number of favorites before user XYZ (Note: I don't know if that is a real user, figure it as a insert-name-here string), so I can show that off now!

Men might do it to, I don't know. I am not one to go and look at other mens' profiles here.

Might have something to do with the Embargo that has been in place since 1957 (I think).
But then, POF is a Canadian based site, isn't it?

But you're right, there are plenty of great Cubans out there, just like from any country. Should politics really stop love and relationships?
