Anyone had to take care someone with alzheimers?
Posted:
12/24/2007 10:53:46 AM
Just found this thread, and I was wondering if anyone is dealing with an alzheimers patient that isn't related to them? My grandfather had a girl friend before he died and we've always kept in touch with her because all her family is hours away from her. She gave my mother power of attorney and things like that before she got bad, and now we are trying to get her in a long term facility because she is to bad to stay in the assisted living that she is in. We don't really have many problems with Marge herself, because she's gotten quite docile as the disease has progressed, but we are having major problems with her sister. She lives 8 hours away, and is fighting us about everything. The sister doesn't think that the patient should be on any pills perscribed by her doctor, doesn't think that we are doing a good job, and has now informed us that she is going to take us to court in an attempt to get guardianship of Marge... Don't know if anyone has had to deal with this, but thought on it would be nice. I love Marge like she was my own grandmother, and I hate having to constantly be on guard when her sister is around. We have also had people tell us within the community that when Marge was still lucid she had expressed the fact that she didn't like her sister, because she was afraid that she was going to hit her...
My mom has considered giving up the rights that Marge gave her before the disease took hold, but we are afraid that Marge wouldn't be well cared for, and that we wouldn't be able to see her anymore because the sister wants her moved 8 hours away from us. Actually, the sister last night told us that "she didn't care what Marge wanted, she was going to do what was best for her" Because Marge told us a long time ago that she always wanted to stay in this area...
Thanks for reading my vent, please let me know if you have any suggestions!

Calgary mailman attacked by dogs
Posted:

I think that the Majority of the blame should be put on the owner. Training classes are not at all hard to find, and there are a large percent of unstable dogs that could benefit from constant training. I think it should be a life style for all dog owners. I have a high strung Australian Shepherd, Border Collie cross that barks like she's going to attack anything that moves, but she is trained well enough to not move until I tell her she can once I know there is nothing to worry about. Her barking is her herding instincts coming out. She barks at my three cats but has never made a move against them, she barks at other dogs (which is why she trained to lay down in the car, can't be causing an accident because of a barking dog lol) I think that when you have a dog you must always be assertive and aware of the surroundings at all times. It is the Owners responsibility to make sure their dog is under control. The dog owners that don't care enough are the ones that help to instill fear in some people and help to make a tragedy like an attack a reality instead of a possibility. Also make those of us that train, and prepare our dogs look bad!

I'm a Will and Grace addict and one of my favorites is:
Jack: I'm an expert I go on literally thousands of dates a year...
Will: Jack, that doesn't make you an expert, that makes you an Escort...
Or
Ben: Karen what kind of wine would you like with dinner?
Karen: Honey, I'd suck the alcohol out of a deodorant stick... Your talking to the wrong girl.

As the story goes he put his pants on and left... lol I laugh because she tried to cover it and with those two names it's just not possible.

I have a friend that got the shot twice, she then got her period for almost 2 years straight. No matter what they did they couldn't get it to stop (other pills and an IUD) I got the shot three times but I had no sex drive and that kind of defeated the purpose for me, Why use a birth control if you don't ever want to have sex? After seeing what happened to my friend I would think twice about using it again.

I think it goes both ways, there's just as many words used about men. What really Burns me though is being told I can't do it BECAUSE I'm a woman!
I was putting in a ceiling fan the other day and a male friend of mine told me I was gonna burn down the house because I was a girl and didn't know what I was doing... Shockingly he can still speak and walk, and will be coming out of the hospital very soon j/k

Automatic writing
Posted:
12/5/2006 10:02:21 AM
My best friend and I have had experiences with automatic writing, She and I both have grandparents and others that have crossed over and we both actively communicate with them (be it just talking to the air, and yes I know when I talk to myself I look crazy LOL) but it's more than just talking to myself I can almost feel how they are reacting to the things that I am saying. Things that I have doubt with myself sometimes I go on feeling like that and other times I get an overwhelming sense of peace and when I listen to that things generally go right. But moving on to the topic at hand. I was going through some things in my life and wasn't doing what I normally do in those situations and had myself completely closed off. My best friend in another city called me up and said, "Alright Janine, what's going on?" she was on her deck writing in her journal, the same thing she does every night, Zoned out and when she realized what was going on she looked at her paper and it said "tell her that everything will be alright and to trust herself, tell her we miss her and are waiting for her to come back to us" and she "knew" in her heart and head it was for me. And so did I when she read it to me. The same has happened with our situations reversed though I was typing at the time. Always good to know that others are looking out for us eh?

As for broken mirrors my dog broke one yesterday, Should I worry for her?? lol Personally I think if you worry about it enough, it will happen, that being said, I do throw salt when spilt, try not to walk under ladders (more so because I don't want to be squished than anything) and knock on wood on a regular basis (stems from competitive bowling, watch someone get a head pin and knock on wood that it didn't happen to you, they are contagious don'tcha know) I did however read something when I was younger something about the notion that "bad witches" had black cats for empowerment or something along those lines so the only reason they are considered "bad luck" was because they were "bad witches" and that white cats were actually the bad luck ones. Don't know if there is any truth in it but it's a snippet of trivia from years past that stuck with me.

Alzheimer's treatments
Posted:

That's what the doctor told us about aricept but we were never informed that there was a drug that could actually help alzheimer's. But my other question is, We don't think that she knows that she has it. Like with her meds. She's on Celexa and the Aricept but she asks us every day what they are for and why she is taking 2 pills. So I suppose the actual question is should we try to explain it to her?? Or just let it go it's natural course? I don't know if it would be beneficial for her to be told that we think she's loosing her memory but I don't know how others have taken that kind of news? Or would it be futile for us to even tell her and risk the blow up if she's going to forget that we told her tomorrow...

Dealing with alzheimer's [Locked - Redundant]
Posted:
12/4/2006 2:29:52 PM
I have a woman that is almost like a grand mother to me, she used to date my grandfather before he passed away and we've just kind of adopted her because she has no other family in the area. She's recently been diagnosed as Pre Alzheimer's and I was wondering if there is anyone out there that can give me any ideas on how to deal with this disease. I've only ever been around one other person that had it, she was my great aunt and she passed away years ago. If anyone can give my mother and I any tips on how to deal with the whole thing, That would be great. We've just been very patient up until now but I can't seem to think of anything that would make her life easier as well as ours with the memory. Thank you very much.

I was wondering about the aricept, I have an "adopted grandmother" that is on Aricept and I don't see any improvement in her and she's been on it for almost 7 weeks, I was wondering if it took longer than that or If we should be talking to the doctor and see if we can't get her on something else...

For me it's B and E all rolled into one, E is trying to keep my Sister away from my Dad, So he doesn't kill her, My Aunt away from my Grandma, so she doesn't kill her and my dog away from one of my moms cats, so the cat doesn't kill her. So I'm gonna lock my sister grandma and my dog all in one room and the rest of us will have a merry fun day... Gotta love the down home Christmas attitudes...LOL

What does it mean when a woman reserves a shelf in her bathroom for a guy? Do friends do this?
Posted:
11/30/2006 2:48:56 PM
I've done this quite a bit for friends I also have a drawer full of unopened toothbrushes and things like that for people that didn't plan to stay here but do. If she's reserving a shelf for you it could be a good sign or not, depending on the kind of person she is, if it's for a different man again it could either too. Depends on who her friends are and how close she is with them. I agree with above posts though, if it's a drawer or closet space, it's more than friends.

Every time something comes out of my mouth that I know my parents would say. LOL Also I was driving on the highway with my best friend and a guy came flying onto the road in front of me from an access road (wasn't safe) and I threw my hand out in the "soccer mom hold" in front of my friend I laughed so hard I cried when he yelled out "I knew you were a soccer mom!!" Every time I look at my niece and nephew I feel a little older. I was only 18 when my niece came along and she's almost 4 it's crazy to see how fast life progresses when your not paying attention.

WTF... Camping in Winter ?
Posted:
11/28/2006 10:27:43 AM
I used to do it all the time, we didn't sleep in igloos though, Nylon tents, same ones we used in the summer, only difference was we had like 8 of us in a 4 person tent. Actually I started doing it in Girl Guides. Snow shoes and camp fires in the winter different from summer camping but so worth it. Being cushioned by the snow so it feels like you and your group are the only ones on the planet is amazing. Aside from last year there was almost 10 of us that went out boxing day until New years for about 6 years. As long as you know something about winter survival your good.

Dreams

I don't remember my dreams anymore but I do get Deja Vu ALOT and I always attribute it to dreaming about it before and knowing that it was what I was supposed to be doing (life path and what not) I do however have very coherent conversations with people while I'm sleeping. I used to live with my best friend and he worked at a bar and when he came home he would come into my room and talk to me and the only way he could tell if I was actually awake was if he asked if I wanted a smoke and I said no (apparently I don't smoke when I'm sleeping thankfully) But I would never remember the conversations. My Sister however Screams in her sleep like someone is killing here, hides in the closet and everything. Would those be considered Night terrors?? We've never been able to figure out why she does it but it's been since she was very young and she's 24 now.

Well as for the circumstance we lived with my sister and her cats for 2 years almost and it should have been longer had I not had to move for job related issues, so to answer that question no, there wasn't anyone that could have looked after him until I got my own place. And in the first post that I wrote I said if I could have a do over I don't know if I would de-claw him again. I asked my vet every question that I could think of to make sure that he would be alright and at the time I knew the procedure as something that was done all the time and was safe. I know of at least a dozen cats that have been de-clawed and not one has had any problems with recovery and any animal can get an infection or a sore from anything. My cat has had feline acne that left him in a cone for a month and being fed 4 pills a day all brought on by an allergy to sea food. Does that make me a bad cat mom? Because he had an infection and I didn't foresee it being an issue until it happened? My dog had to have surgery because she ate an apple in the backyard (they though there was something wrong with her intestines) so perhaps should I not be a dog mom either?? The point that I'm trying to make is Yes, 3 years ago I got my cat de-clawed and then a year ago I got the other 2 de-clawed. However my cats are healthy, happy, have regular check ups, have 3 kinds of dry food down at any one given time, get canned food once a day, always have a clean litter box and have more toys than my niece does. So how is it that because of 3 surgeries I shouldn't get to be their mom?

how long before you have your boy friend meet your parents?

I've never introduced a boyfriend to my parents, My dad has told me from a young age that when I bring a boyfriend home he's gonna be sitting on the front step in his underwear with his teeth out in a rocking chair with the dog by his side (as you might be able to guess he's kind of a redneck LOL) And I think I need to find a person that would be able to sit through that without laughing like a loon and running away.

I need help house breaking my dog
Posted:
11/5/2006 8:00:30 AM
I had the almost the exact same problem with my dog (she's 8months old now) and it was about 5 months. My problem was we didn't have a back yard really until she was 5 months so she was paper trained, I tried moving her paper through the door and that didn't work for us, because it wasn't the paper she was trained for it was the spot where the paper was, So if your dog goes on the paper regardless of where it is then moving it would probably work. if not go out side with her and don't take her back in unless she goes and if she is crate trained if she doesn't go put her in her crate for 20 min and then take her out again. Also ever time you take her outside if you ask and she perks her ears up, take her to the door physically take her foot in your hand and scratch it on the door asking her at the same time, "Do you have to go outside?" *foot scratch* Constant repetition then if you ask she will go to the door. And eventually will let you know herself. I've finally got Nisha that no matter where we are when I say "get done" she get's done
But group training classes are awesome as long as they are put on by a trained professional (had a friend that went to one and the lady had NO idea what she was talking about) We just took an 8 week and she only turns into cujo 20% of the time instead of 80%
But training takes years, not necessarily house training but dog training in general and constant repetition. When they say not the dogs fault, it's yours it's so true, every time my dog kills a pair of my shoes I smack myself because I didn't put them where they belong, I gave her the access she took the bait. My fault.
Good Luck!

when do you get in the xmas spirit?
Posted:

I get into the spirit on the first snow fall (the first real one was 2 days before Halloween) There was people in my town with their houses decorated and lit up a week ago, I almost feel like I'm behind now LOL I love the spirit behind the holiday, The good will toward men feeling, Should be all year long but it's not. I remember when I was small driving around with my dad looking at the lights, one of my favorite memories. Yes the birth of Christ has become over commercialized but I'm willing to join in on that because I love it!

I love to hate it, I love looking at it but with my job that means I have to be up at 5am to shovel it and I'm not so fond of being up at that hour.
But seeing my dogs reaction this morning was rather comical (her first snow fall ever) I thought it was going to take her half an hour just to get off the stairs of the deck!

When I bought my house I made the mistake of buying it from my aunt and uncle, when they left they also left their cat here, she was at least 13 and I had a 2 year old cat and 2 kittens at the time. The inherited one Had never been with another cat and she wouldn't come out of her room at all I ended up taking her and some kitty litter and some food back to my family and making them take her back, Now apparently she's happy again and so are they. But what I'm really getting at here (sorry, I ramble) is that if the cat came out for even a split second you’re defiantly making headway. Tiny (the one I gave back) would not come out of her room At all for any reason. So at least you've got a little hope for socializing her. Good luck with it! And I respect you for doing it, most wouldn't and it's always nice to see someone with a good heart.

My Girl (dog) is terrified of every one aside from me and a select few so no, that wouldn't be an issue. My cat however is the best judge of character that I've ever met, He used to hiss at one of my ex's on a regular basis and after he tried to hit me, I understood why. I think it comes down to how well you know the temperament of your animals and your own gut feelings. I take into account everything I feel about the person and then the animal’s reactions. But I agree with the above post if anyone tried to push my "babies" around he'd be gone instantly.

I love that I am blonde and can blame my life on it! lol Forgetting to put the grounds in the coffee maker is my usual morning blondeness but if you want to talk really dumb moments, I fell Up a side walk curb and broke my foot. Physically impossible? I thought so too! I have my locksmith on speed dial on my cell phone for when I lock myself out of my house and also on a running bill, I pay up at the end of the month.
I recently gave my mother a key though to attempt to end the highly expensive bill... I also have the towing company on speed dial to come unlock my car on the many a day I lock my keys in it. But being clumsy and blonde just adds to my appeal I think, It at least gives people a good laugh on a regular basis anyway!

The new guy I've been speaking with for about a year I met him online, I thought it was just friends and he recently told me that he's liked me from the time he met me. And I would go to school but I have to be in my home town to help my parents out, I can't let my mother do it alone (self employed, and my dad is not working due to a head injury) So that option is out. The sad part is if the new guy had told me when we first started talking that he liked me in that way I probably never would have gotten involved with the guy that hurt me...

Alright, Here's my storey, A couple months ago (like 10) I was in a relationship with a man that I know now I didn't know, he stole from me and then disappeared, I later found out that he was in Jail, and it was for breaking his parole, Prior to meeting me he was in Jail for 2 years for running a big fraud ring. I thought I loved him I know now that I did not. My problem comes in now with a new man that I've met that I really like. I am so afraid to trust someone else again that I keep putting him off and I'm wondering if there is anyone that can tell me that's been hurt and put through something like me, and how did you get past it? I would really love some advice because the criminal was only the second relationship I’ve ever had, the first one ended fine and I just don't know what to do.
Anyone's opinion would be welcome.
Thanks,
J9

I agree with everything you said with the exception of
On the other hand - the "nice" guy will have a good job, want to take care of the lady, would treat her with respect etc... but all she sees is someone who is "whole" without her and so she chooses another "jerk" who "needs" her.
That's not nessisarly true in most cases, if I see a man with his life on track and a good job and what not, I don't run because he's "whole" I wave him toward me because of that... I don't think that all 'givers' run to jerks to feel needed... Maybe it's just me that feels this way though...

I do know a person like this and I think (or so I've been told, because I would be the person like this) that it comes down to she has an amazing heart and gets taken advantage of because she doesn't expect people to act like that. When people are optimistic to a fault and see the good in every situation and love life that much it's almost like they (we) See it as, "Well I would never do that... why would they??"
My 2 cents anyway

^^ Agree with that, Also Kinda blurry, I will never understand the urge to post naked pictures of oneself, I would never do it though so I supose that's why I don't understand.

My best friend is a Bipolar Manic depressive and I think that with the right meds and a good safty net of friends and family it can be overcome... She's not even on any meds right now because she's prego and she's doing fine... It's tough but there is light at the end of the tunnel...

Disabilities and dating....

I have a very good friend that is engaged to a man with some disabilities and they are one of the happiest couples that I've ever seen. Once the three of us were out with her sister and some of her friends. One of the friends is my cousin, and her sister has had problems with her mobility among other things, since she was born and the girl (my cousin) was mocking my friends man because he can't walk as well as others. I took her aside and scared the crap outta her (because let's face it, if you've got a girl that 6'1 and big mad at you, you get a little scared, expecially if you know your wrong) and she said she was sorry to him and everything, but it still upsets me that there are people out there that can't see past the physical and into the personality, in my mind the only thing that matters. Granted physical attraction is something, but the personality is what keeps you. I would date a person with a disibility if I thought that we could have a good time, if we wouldn't mesh in that way, I would still hang out with him, so that we could be friends. Thanks for reading my rambelings lol

Know what I hate the most?? I'm on of those women who'll play pool, drink beer out of pitcher, joke with the guys and because you hit it off with a guy as a friend their g/f feels it's a threat. Geesh not all women are out to steal someone else's man lol
No Kidding!!! I soooooo agree!!

also they ask loaded questions... you think she is cute? do i look fat. I am nothing like my mom. i agree men can call eachother nasty names and laff about it also. call a women the C word and it goes in the permant file to be brought out in every fight from that time on.
Not every female does ^ this. My best friend is a man and he calls me the C word all the time... especially when I'm acting like one... I have never nor will I ever say something about someone behind there back and then back down and say that I didn't. Anything that comes out of my mouth will be backed up if it is ever questioned. Though I do agree that there are alot of girls that do do that. Which makes me sick... those are the people that make us ladies (that don't do it) Look really bad!!
