FairTax - a consumption tax that would eliminate the IRS
Posted:
4/26/2007 7:26:14 AM
A friend of mine has a small successful business. She nets about $500 thousand a year out of it. Currently she pays around 25% on that 500,ooo. In practice she and her husband spend about half of what they bring in and put the other half in investments. Now she pays about $125,000 per year in taxes. Under the fair tax by their figures she would pay 22% on 250,000 or $55,000. Actually less than that as some of her money is for vacations in foreign countries so this government would collect none of that money.
Her top five employeees make between 50,000 and 70,000. They save 10 to 20 % based on their financial position. The rest is spent on living. So if you take the lowest one at 50,000. She currently because of deductions pays 15% on her income or 7,500. Under the fair tax she would pay 22% on 90 % of her income or $9900. Additionally she pays SS taxes on all of her income. The business owner pays SS taxes on only a small part of her income. What part of "fair" is the fair tax?
This is nothing more than a smoke and mirrors scheme to shift the tax burden to the middle class.

Dem Senate Majority leader's hypocrisy

Harry Reid has had no choice but to get tough on this issue. Bush has refused to listen to anybody's advice but his own. After the Baker report was issued he should have changed his tack. All he has done since then is show his lack of tact. Bush so far has been unwilling to compromise on anything. That might just get him a veto overide.

FairTax - a consumption tax that would eliminate the IRS
Posted:

I think something that is not getting through to the posters is the basic unfairness of this tax. The middle class has to spend almost all of their income. That means they would be taxed on almost the whole of their income. The rich seldom spend more than half their income, so half of their income would go untaxed. Have we not given that segment of society enough of a tax break?

FairTax - a consumption tax that would eliminate the IRS

The four largest costs for the middle class are housing, automobiles, fuel and medical care. Can you see any of these industries lowering their costs by 22%? This is a pipe dream and a scam on the middle class.
The automobile industry is not making any money now, fuel is controlled by six majors and that means no competition. Housing can't sell what they make now and the medical industry has proven to be totally irresponsible.

FairTax - a consumption tax that would eliminate the IRS

The fair tax is based on the idea that if corporations did not have a tax burden then they would reduce their sales price by 22 or so %. I frankly do not think they would. As many of them have moved offshore to avoid paying any tax. Even though the concept includes exempting the poor, in practice it may not work that way. It s a regressive tax and the middle class can pay no more.
While those at the top of the food chain would have to pay out the nose for fancy houses and cars, they would not have to pay for money they did not spend. They would probably end up paying less. Do you really want to pay 24,400 for a 20,000 car?
The sad truth about Americans is that they never want to pay for the goods and services the receive.
BTW I don't see a whole lot of congressmen getting on board with this. That is mostly Neal Boortz hype.

We have a race now. Obama did not accept PAC money or any money from lobbyists in 2007. Isn't that what you have been asking for, to keep the big donors from having too much influence? Most of his contributions were $100 or less. Considering Bill Clinton is the greatest fundraiser of all time, this says a lot about Obama being able to raise grass roots support. Obama had 100,000 donors to her 40,000. I'm loving it.

Iranian capture of UK soldiers
Posted:

It looks to me like Iran played this card as long as they could and got the most mileage out of it possible. In the meantime because of rising fuel prices over the incident Iran pocketed an extra couple of million dollars every day. My guess is that they will get their hostages back and the Brits will stay out of their waters.
Iran got
closer ties with Syria
lots of good PR
several million dollars
reconition as a power in the region
probably their five hostages back
Brits will stay out of their waters
Us and Great Britian got
their hostages back and zip.

Couric's Interview with John and Elizabeth Edwards

One thing I really admire about John Edwards is that he was not born on third base and called his life a home run. He was not to the manor born and all of his success is his own. I feel the same way about Obama and felt the same thing about Bill Clinton.
There is nothing wrong with people from rich families running for office. I just seem to be more comfortable with one who may have had to work in a grocery store or a textile mill to get through College.

In my opinion, the only credible Republican left is Chuck Hegel. I would give him zero chance of winning the nomination. I liked John McCain for a very long time even though I disagreed with most of his positions. As of late, McCain has lost that respect. He has been too willing to kowtow to the religious right and his stance on Iraq is just wrong headed. His little temper tantrum with Obama did not help my opinion of him either.

Support our Troops!!!
Posted:
4/3/2007 8:44:02 AM
What does support our troops even mean?
Too often with too many people it means support the mission or the Presidents directives. Personally I see little patriotism in sending young men and women into battle for an unjust cause. We did that for ten years in Viet Nam and with no gain. None of the dire predictions that accompanied that war happened. Communism did not spread to our shores, the dominos did not fall.
I am in an area where the local soldiers are preparing for their third round in Iraq. As I see these guys, I wonder if it is the last time I will see them. I wonder if the last time they hold their wives and babies will be their last time ever. Of course they will gut it up and go, they are our soldiers. They will fight and some will die and we will gain nothing. That is a currency in human suffering not well spent. In my conversations with them, I find few who actually support the war effort. I don't give an opinion as I want them to just tell me what they feel. These are mostly young kids away from parents and they sometimes just want to talk to an older guy. I listen and tell them I am on their side but they are going in to battle and I am not. I suppose in a war where you have lost the belief that what you are doing is just, then you just go and fight for your fellow soldiers.
My belief in our first job in supporting the troops is to not put them in harms way for no good reason.

Yep trial lawyers or litagators are horrid things until you need one. Then you might just pray John Edwards would step back into that profession. It might also be noted that he no longer practices law. Were we to eliminate all lawyers in Washington, there would be few senators or congressmen left. It would also eliminate Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, Rudy Guiliani, John Edwards and most of the others from running for the presidency. But you could have Dubya. Never went to law school one day in his life.

Ebit36,
Seldom do we get the best people for the job as President. Al Gore with all of his faults would have been a better choice than Bush. Bill Bradley and John McCain might have been better choices than both of them at the time.
As far as the media is concerned. That is just a joke. It is not right biased or left biased as much as it has just simply lost its way. This new generation simply does not understand their job. You can't find anything on Kucinich but tons of stuff on Anna Nichole or Brittany. The evening newscasts on ABC, CBS and NBC are at best a forth grade effort. Fox is propaganda. I usually watch PBS.

John Edwards has had a recent jump in the polls. Is it sympathy or simply that he came across as a genuine caring man? The latter is my reason but I always liked him.
RWGG has been though this with his family as have I. I would not wish that problem on my worst enemy. Both of the Edwards are showing character and courage. Good traits for a President and sorely lacking in the current one.

Couric's Interview with John and Elizabeth Edwards

Senator Edwards has stated that he should not get any votes because of his wife's condition. He has said in fact if you plan on voting for him because of that don't do it. He has also accepted the fact that people will examine his motives for continuing the race.
Her cancer has returned and they have made the decision together that he should stay in the race. You may not like that and you may not approve but it is their decision. Those of you who have made derisive remarks about that appear to me to be people who were not planning on voting for him anyway.
I have been through this in my family more than a few times. We have always made the decision to make the best of the time left, to go on living and to make as few changes in our life as possible. You have a right to question his motives but you do not have a right to be mean spirited about it because you don't like or respect the man.

Sassymiss, I did not take it as disrepect to the Edwards family. I watched them on 60 minutes tonight. John Edwards was somber and restrained in his guestures. If he does not love his wife, then he is the world's best actor. I admired what they had to say, both of them. They want their life to be about living and about public service and not about dying. The Senator asked that no one vote for him for reasons of sympathy. I personlly think that we should neither vote for or against him because of his wife's illness.
One thing is true. We will see the content of his character in this election cycle. I have been through this in my family too many times. Those times prove what you are made of. I think he is a good man. Right now he is number 2 on my list but if his interview tonight is a true indication of the man, he could move up.
We shall see.

Offended McCain wages war of letters with Obama
Posted:

A lot of things have been attributed to John McCain and most are false. However his temper is legendary and sometimes he reacts in an inappropriate manner. This is not the first time he has fired off a missive to Obama. Why would a senior Senator much care what a first term senator said or did? The facts are that this particular first term senator seems to be a guy who can get things done. McCain needs him to get his bill through.
Obama is down to less than 5 cigerettes per day and intends to quit entirely. That is hardly a chain smoker.
I agree on the Patriot act and funding the war effort. Now who do we have as a candidate who has not backed both agendas?

It should be noted that in the past when these types of incidents happened that both sides claim they were in the right. Remember the Pueblo and the U2 incident. After much flexing of muscle and postering, it came out that foreign space was violated. I suspect the Iranians were waiting for this type of thing to happen so they could take advantage of it. More than likely they have proof of GPS positioning of the ship that was boarded. I doubt if they would risk it otherwise.
Frankly, it is just BS from both sides.

Senator Edwards and Mrs. Edwards have every right to pursue this nomination. It is something they both believe in. They are a team, a partnership that has spanned 30 years. I do not for one second believe that he does not have her full backing in this endeavor. Whether or not he is the best candidates is another matter. I believe that had he headed the ticket last time, he would have won. John Edwards has a good message, he is a possible.
Relax people, we are a long way from the nomination. Someone will rise to the top. It may well be someone unexpected in both parties. Of those seeking the nomination on the Republican side, I do not see a candidate that can win. With Dubya in office and seeming to botch everything he does, he creates too much baggage for any Republican candidate. The only possibility is a Republican who will make his campaign against Bush. I don't see that happening.

14 minutes ago a poster on POF offered the legal opinion that the shootings by President Bush and VP Cheney were within their powers under the Patriot act and that their arrests were unlawful and politically motivated.

Third of Iraqi children now malnourished four years after US invasion

Thanks Nick. The US forces do some of that, just not enough. Occupations of foreign countries are always a bad idea but if you are going to do that, then your first job is to alleviate the miserable conditions that exist. We did more of that at the start but it was not macho enough for this administration. You can win more friends with butter than with guns. I have a lot of compassion for these kids and the adults as well. However, compassion aside, it is just the smart thing to do. In Somalia, we let the warlords steal the food. You have to be sure it gets to all of the people.

The answer to the OPs question is yes. It is also a matter of degree. Because you may have some hate in your heart for some group or another, it does not mean you have to act on it. We should all commit to treat each other with respect and get to know each other. If we did we would find we have a lot more in common than not. One thing is for certain, no one ever thinks he is a raciest. Read the threads on illegal immigration. Not one person has admitted that they have raciest views, but a rather large portion of the postings are raciest. That is not to say that everyone who posts on those threads are, but some are and they are the ones least likely to admit it.

Posted:
3/23/2007 5:58:50 AM
It is my opinion that if we were to see that these Iraqi children had the food they needed that would be one hell of a lot more effective than anything we could do at the point of a gun. The military has been somewhat involved in doing so but obviously not to the extent that they need to. Food drops are one hell of a lot cheaper than Humvees, tanks etc.
The insurgency is growing because we have been depicted as the foreign devil. It is hard to be thought of as the foreign devil if we are feeding their children, giving them medical care etc. Like so much of Bush's war, this part was ill thought out and should have been enacted on from the start. It may be too late at this point for this to have much effect but every child who goes hungry because of us is a child who will grow up to be America's enemy. If compassion for these children does not move you, then consider the economics of it. If you get Haliburton out of the movement of food in that country would be cheap.

93% of afrs ican-americans murdered by african-americans

There can be lots of reasons for this. In the South Black on Black crime is still not treated as harshly as black on white crime. Blacks and white may both be in poverty but blacks even get the worst end of that.
I once lived in a community where everything was the reverse. In that community black kids were more likely to go to college and white kids were more likely to drop out. That was a result of a strong black community with recognized leaders and a white community that had just given up. If a black kid in that town messed up he had to face more than just his parents.
Brownsugar thanks as always you express your views whether popular or not. A couple of black leaders have touched on your theme. Jesse Jackson and Bill Cosby. I seem to remember that was also a tenet and goal of Malcom X and ML King. I live in an area now that has two black cultures. The one that is winning is the one that says get ahead. That has a lot to do with people in the service here who have found a way out. One of my favorites is a young Black man from New York who was headed the wrong way. He joined the military and has been raised in grade steadily. He talks to the local kids a lot about that issue. I worry about him. He has done two tours in Iraq and is headed for a third. Every body needs leaders and mentors.

While it is true that there is a big world to sell products to, the US remains the world's market place. As long as we have some sembalence of a middle class it will remain that way. Our shrinking middle class gives us less and less power. The time to act was yesterday but today will do. We still have the power to pull this big global companies up short. Do not buy from countries where we have a balance of trade deficit. Do not buy from companies that outsource out of the country. Do not buy from Companies that manufacture out of the country. Do not buy from Companies that move offshore to avoid US taxes. It is not that hard, we just all have to do it.
Buy nothing from Wal-Mart. They treat their employess like crap, they pay almost no one benefits, they sell 70% of their products from China and they are largely owned by a family that has been despicable in their use of money in politics.

Henry Ford made some choices that put him in the despicable catagory such as his support of Hitlers Germany. He was no bleeding heart. He was however a good businessman and understood that one concept that Americans had to be able to afford the products that America produced. He also spent much of his time teaching new foreign workers english. He and Henry Firestone regularly taught classes to those workers. As best as I can tell, he did that because it made business sense. It is a damn shame that none of his descendents learned much.

Federal Prosecuters fired

This issue is really heating up. It appears the President will fight in court to avoid having his people testify under oath. Presidents always call that a seperation of powers issue. I always call it trying to hide something. If it goes to court, it will not be decided during his term that being a long and ardeous process.

I'm for it and I hope people of all political stripes will realize what has been done to them and get on board. I don't see a down side.

Now there are accusations being made that with Saudi money, we have been financing Al Queda activities against Hezbollah. Things just keep getting curiouser and curiouser. Who the hell is the enemy?

It would be hard for me to believe that the Republicans would even consider that moron for any position. He proved to be the most corrupt politician in many years. As i am hoping for a Democratic president in 2008, Gingrich/DeLay would be a dream team for me. They would be soooo easy to beat.

Third of Iraqi children now malnourished four years after US invasion

Stonecastle,
It was the job of the allies to know what would happen if we invaded Iraq. All ramifications of war are the reponsibility of those that start them. As far as the rest of it, you are dreaming. The government we put in place will never last at least in the form we put it in. That civil war will decide what form of government they chose.

Would this world not be a better place if the "chest beaters" on both sides of conflicts thought just for a second what the remifications are for those unable to care for themselves.
I hate this war and I have never supported going into Iraq. However this is part of Colin Powells warning about if you break it you buy it. And this part I do think we are on the hook for. We should make sure these children have food. Frankly it is real hard to hate anyone who is feeding you. We may make more friends that way than at the point of a gun.
We should not have hungry kids in this country either.

Is Al Gore a Hypocrite?

Wolves, I can't say I disagree with you entirely. The carbon credits thing seems a bit shaky to me too. I pointed out earlier that Gore was indeed installing all of the solor panels needed to take himself off the grid. Only you acknowledged that. It just seems to me that too many of the posters on this thread are barely hiding their dislike for Gore and that is clouding the argument.
I am a little disgusted with him myself. Regardless of the theories that his election was stolen, you have to blame him for running one of the worst campaigns in history. That election should have never been close enough to steal. I do not believe that had he been elected that we would be bogged down in Iraq right now. I believe that Bin Ladin would have been caught and I believe that we would not have sunk into 4 trillion dollars more debt.

In fairness Wolves, that is the second time Mrs. Gibson has referenced that article. It does not support her argument. I have read it twice and it merely states that some scientists disagree with Al Gore. It also says some agree with him and it concludes as Charles says it does.
Any time you have a theory, you will have some who agree and some who disagree and some will take middle ground. I suggest you read the article yourself and draw your own conclusion.
To the naysayers on Global Warming, I always have one question. What is the downside of cleaning up the environment?
