meh...I'm just happy when I see a guys profile that doesn't have shirtless-cellphone-bathroom pics and text speak...
(with a big flash reflecting in the mirror as if it couldn't get worse...)

Um, how about helping the guy with his profile instead of critiquing everything the rest of us are saying? He is asking for our input and we give it to him. You're never going to agree with all of it.

Jessika has the right idea about using "I"'s in the start of so many sentences. Your profile reads like a resume, and i keep thinking you need bullets for each line stating your qualifications. Think of this as a mini story about yourself focusing on who you are and what you like to do. It's obvious that you're an outdoorsman, and for many women that sounds awesome. However, unless it's 24/7 backpacking, packrafting and camping, etc., you might want to list other interests, especially if you want your date to be the intelligent type (which I am happy to report that you spelled that word correctly). However, given my perception that your own profile is less than perfectly constructed, I think it's unfair and insulting to imply that a woman who makes a typo or misspelling is not intelligent. I am mentioning this because it doesn't look so good on you, because it seems that you are judging.

oh You also need a close up picture of your face.

OP,

I doubt that poeple really care what you do with your profile. But the fact is, you came out and asked for help. Then after several people bothered to try and help, some being very straighforward, you are blowing everyone off. No you dont have to take everyone's or even anyone's advice, but sheesh. Chill out man.

Luckily for you, there are many gullible ladies out there that think they might be getting something good in return for being controlled by their man.

You will be tall, but not as tall as me. You will be a Stepford Wife, but pretend you really aren't.

Good luck!

Looking for new coffee!
Posted: 9/14/2010 5:25:34 PM
I'm not a huge Dunkin Donuts fan, though I have a weakness for their iced coffees. I must start my day with at least 1 cup, preferably 2, but time dictates I cut it short on those days that I am rushing. And after that, I "become a person".

Eight O'Clock coffee was rated as the "Best" in Consumer Reports last year, and I don't take any issue with that (no pun intended). It is very good. I also like a varierty, and currently I am drinking Peet's. A very good, not so expensive coffee is Cafe' Bustelo, but I have never seen any whole bean Bustelo. I confess getting a perverse pleasure out of grinding those beans and hearing them scream, and pour hot, scalding water on them. (Well I am deaf so I have to imagine they're screaming - a friend told me that they do and I want to believe that). I bought a Capresso at Ross, for a much cheaper price than when I worked in a trndy kitchen store years ago.

Mexican coffees are also good and you might also want to go organic and see if you like that.

I used to pile in the cream and sugar, but realized that you get so much more of the flavor when you drink it black. Besides that being much better for you than "loaded". you can drink that same cup all morning and still enjoy the flavor cold. Not so with old milk or cream. Ugh.

Good luck and keep us posted!

OP,

You have started this thread asking us to please help, because you can't figure out what you're doing wrong. At least that is the impression I somehow get - but maybe that's just me?

There are several people here taking their time to try and help you. Yet you get very defensive and angry at those who might suggest that a scary bunny or a morbid cemetary picture might not catch the chicks you want. 9pluto is one of them - and he is very observant and even funny about it. You're defending each and every one of the items that are gently suggested that you blip off from the PoF radar. You don't want 9pluto to continue to help? I'm sure that would be fine with many other persons to not only need help but actually want HIS help because he's amazing at this.

A Man Who Knows What He Wants (profile review)
Posted: 9/14/2010 6:54:40 AM
Upon further reading (your revised version rather than what the posters copied), I see that you have worked hard on your profile to make changes that many people are suggesting. But what strikes me is there is nothing that gives a woman any fantasies about you - you do it all for them. Instead of giving us graphic pictures of having our hair brushed from out faces, in a tender moment or as if your romantic interest were a child, why not just describe yourself as very caring and personable. There is a lot more one could anticipate in feeling loved.

I'm sure you don't watch kids TV, as I admit to doing with my kids, but you remind me of Dylan, a charactor who plays a soap opera actor in "Sonny With a Chance", who is charming and goodlooking, self-centered, popular and does all the "right" things. If he is stuck for something to say, he whips out a script, flips through the pages until he finds the exact right words, and then recites them with sincere passion, with his eyes focused on his girl, brushing the hair away from her face. It works for him on his show but not in real life. Am I making any sense here? This is what your essay makes me think of. Throw away your script. You might be all of those things that you said, but there simply is nothing left for the reader to anticipate.

Apparently, I have kids and therefore you're eliminated from my prospective list of suitors. While the occasion of your firstborn and ANY of your chilren are truly a joyous experience, it is hardly what you might imagine - or hope - it to be. Giving birth is a messy and painful experience, and then there are all the emotions and behind the scenes that don't make it into the photos. Yet, I have total amnesia about much of it. For many, when you're truly in love, it won't matter if this is your firstborn and her second - every child is a true miracle. I'm thankful that not every guy feels this way. My own mother was 23, newly widowed with 3 kids, one of them less than 6 months old. she found a real winner. It didn't faze him that her firstborn was not his. But they had a baby together and very sadly, that baby died of SIDS. You just never know. It's not always a perfect Hallmark scene. You could also have kids with disabilities or even (gasp) deaf. You could suddenly find that you're an Octo-Dad.

I really don't intend to be harsh here, but it sounds a bit like you take ownership over this imagined relationship and woman. You will kindly "allow" her to take the lead now and then. I take the lead anytime I feel like it. I also enjoy my guy taking the lead too. A relationship is a give and take. It's equal - not always 50-50, but sometimes it can be 40-60 and the other way around. Variation is good.

About sending roses, I agree with First about not sending them right now but not so much for the reasons she states. Your profile rings kind of phony and sending roses resonates that a bit. Your idea of a romantic relationship seems very self serving and a rose just seems like a carrot dangling. I have sent roses to friends, both men and women, and for me it does not need to be romantic but just something nice to do for someone else. But I would not have noticed your rose activity had another poster not mentioned it. I don't monitor that on anyone's profile.

Maybe you should just leave the profile as is, if this is how you feel. Stay true to yourself. But if you ever do change, and see women as equals, and your romantic interest as a genuine friend and human being, then by all means please come back and work on changing this. You have potential.

If I were you, I would just delete this account and start fresh... change the name and your age. While you look good, you don't remotely look 30. Late 30's to 45. Nothing wrong with that - you're a goodlooking guy.

I agree with all the posters here. Delete this entire thread and start over. Change the name (makes me think you are bragging about your manhood - you probably are!). It's presumtious that it's what a REAL woman would want, and one of the qualities that she WILL appreciate about you.

You also need to fix the age thing. Sure you can blame it on POF that the mods won't let you change it. But you put it there in the first place. My thoughts about seeing your "correction" is that you tried to come off as younger but it didn't work. It still looks bad to me.

I'm not going to rehash everything because all of these reviews say the same thing. Yes you have that right to "eliminate" women with children, but you might want to rephrase that. It sounds as though you don't like children and I am sure that's not true. (If it is true then please do the rest of us women a favor and we can eliminate YOU).

I would even change your title. If you're nearly 40, never married or had kids, and you have these fantasies in your head, chances are that what you "want" isnt realistic or working for you. Have you ever thought about letting life happen instead of dictating how it will happen or how it will happen for the unfortunate woman that comes into your life? I say unfortunate because of if you really mean what you say here, then ... eeek.

9,

Thanks again, and I always enjoy reading what you have to say. Even if you're ripping my words apart, it's still entertaining. I think you've missed your calling.

I will work on the pics and yes, "loyal" also has a campy ring to it, since you point out its flaws. I'm not saying I don't have any insecurities, but the man's loyalty issue has never occured to me. Still, I don't really want to sound like someone's loyal and trusty pet.

My claim to fame, all 15 minutes of it, started by mouthing off at work when we were in the process of developing "meatless deli" hence "Fakin Bacon" and "Foney Baloney". The "bacon" lasted much longer that the baloney stuff, its still on the national market but they now call everything "Smart Bacon", Smart Baloney etc., right in your neighborhood supermarket produce section. They are soy products.....I'm afraid to try the baloney.

I heard this profile structure with the violins playing in the background:

He'd fly thro' the air with the greatest of ease—
A daring young man on the flying trapeze—

Thanks, 9, now I am going to have those violins and the 'trapeze' song in my head all day!

And now, a word from our sponsor: Nobody knows the truffles I've seen!

The profile did have a dramatic tone to it, and .... connecting those dots.... teasing. It's a bit aggravating. I didn't realize that your profile name was a movie, but my issue is it's something I can't pronounce.

Yes, very serious. Spaghetti Warehouse, aka "unaware" house. My date and I were both signing and it didn't faze her when I pointed out that we're not actually blind. She continued with "Do you ski? They can teach you, you know!" I absolutely CAN read Grade II Braille (by sight) but not as easily as regular old print. More recently, I got a minor traffic ticket, my second one ever (and only in Pinellas Park, Florida). An officer was assisting me in finding the room I was supposed to be in, with an interpreter. She remarked that I spoke perfectly and asked "Do you drive?" (Yes apparently not that well, I'm in traffic court!) It was an effort to not to tell her that yes I do, but with a special accomodation: A white cane attached to my fender - too many people fall for that one.

Thank you for the feedback. When I have a bit more time late tonight I am going to look into making a few changes. I always like to do a little better.

Random, how could you post without saying "howdy" to me, and skipped me over entirely??? It's been yearrrrrs! Hello, stranger! Your recipe sounds wonderful, I want to try it. I used to make mollasses cookies often, when I was a new mom. I'd have them made and baked by 9 AM, take them to a very startled moms group by 10. But back then, I lived in the country and had plenty of time to cook.

Thanks for some very astute observations, 9pluto. You're correct - this was updated after 130 am, on impulse. Not sure what I want to do in the dating area - had some strange experiences on dating in the past. I love making friends and think that the man I'd want to be with is someone I'd also be good friends with....sooo I'd better convey that on my profile, would be a start. I don't mind writing and rewriting... to get things perfect. True, also about the photos....the smiling pic was taken from the internet...I'm always taking pictures and rarely on the other end but I'll pull some out. Also thanks to First for seconding that emotion.

Rusty,

I hate to have to point this out, but your actions probably made the lobsters suffer far worse and longer than an instant death in boiling water. Letting them run out the door, they're totally out of their element and crushed or maimed by something else, a slower death no doubt. Not to mention the suffering of your boyfriend.

I'm sure your boyfriend paid a small fortune for the fresh seafood, in your honor and you destroyed dinner??

Pilot, why does the seafood have to be alive when you cook it? I've seen lobster and other shellfish frozen, which I am sure many people buy.

Roast Potatoes
Posted: 2/13/2009 5:40:27 AM
Here's what I do... and the potatoes always come out wonderfully brown.

Peel russets (baking potatoes) and cut length wise into eighths. (You can
vary by personal preference and size of potato.) Place slices in paper or
plastic bag with salt, pepper and approximately two tablespoons of flour
for six potatoes. (Amount of flour is not an exact measurement.) Shake to
coat slices; dust off excess flour.

Very lightly oil the bottom of a cookie sheet. (You could use spray oil or
olive oil.) Place potatoes in one layer. Sprinkle some olive oil on top of
potatoes.

Roast at 425 for about 45 minutes; turn half way through baking time.
Remove when golden brown.

Other things can be added to the dusting mixture to suit taste. (Dan: I
sometimes add fresh thyme.)

I've been following the recipe from Yankee magazine for years. Really works for me..

In a saucepan cover the eggs with 1 inch of
room -temperature water.

Bring just to a boil (until the first bubble
comes to the surface).

Remove the pan from heat, cover, and let stand for 11
minutes (or up to 15 for extra large eggs).

Drain and rinse in cold
water.

Hoax or not, there is nothing even remotely special about this recipe. It looks very standard and you can get any chocolate chip or oatmeal cookie recipe of this kind in cookbooks or the internet.

If NM or anyone sold $250 cookies then too bad for anyone falling for it. If you have $250 to spend on a cookie, then obviously more is needed in one's life.

Anyone know how to make peanut butter?
Posted: 2/7/2009 12:30:43 PM

Ahhh writer59, that is a good theory, but if you check the natural peanut butters at the grocery store, they have no expiration date, just like the processed peanut butters.

Actually I was thinking about homemade peanutbutter, the kind you make yourself - and not the Smuckers natural PB brand etc...

A preference for the the taste and texture of commerical peanut butters is pretty much like preference for macaroni and cheese. I am stunned at how many people of certain ages don't like real macaroni and cheese because they have grown up with the taste of the boxed kind and expect that flavor, size, texture etc. Same with mashed potatoes and many other commercially prepared foods.

Yes, this is exactly what I meant in my previous post, that so many people are accustomed to the taste, that's a good part of the reason so many people buy it. Contrary to popular belief, hydrogenated PB really isn't as good for you.

The best commercial PB in my opinion, is Skippy. My son likes it. PB makes my daughter hurl, literally. She hates it. I dont hate it, but I dont like it all that much. Homemade PB or almond butter rocks!

Anyone know how to make peanut butter?
Posted: 2/7/2009 6:01:31 AM
OP: I have the perfect recipe for you! I promise it will give you the exact same results of your favorite brand.

Buy a big jar of Skippy. Pour or scoop it all out into a blender.
Whiz for 20 seconds, 4 times.
Scoop back into any container or your choice.

Presto!

Yes there is a reason why the grocery stores are stocked with Jif, Skippy, Peter Pan etc. Like most foods, they're full of additives and preservatives. We can keep them on the shelves without it going rancid. It's much easier. Not better for you, but easier.

If you ate only natural peanutbutter you would acquire a taste for it. The stuff at the store is often much different from natural stuff - though Skippy is by far the best.

There are other nuts you could try as well - almond. cashew, sunflower... have oils on hand if you want- peanut oil, sunflower etc...

Good luck!

I have a huge bag of carrots
Posted: 2/5/2009 1:05:20 PM
Seriously, OP, I see you are from Washington. Has to be a lot of snow out there, can't you just make a lot of snowmen and give them noses?

Naughtical: If you carrot all, don't put their noses in the soup.

If you also happen to have a lot of eggs, you could make a carrot nut torte. But I see lots of others have given carrot cake recipes so I'll skip that,

Here are a couple of recipes from Mollie Katzen:

CARROT & WHITE BEAN SALAD WITH YOGURT-SESAME SAUCE

Adapted from "Still Life with Menu"
Preparation time: 35 minutes plus time to chill
Yield: 4 to 6 servings

Strips of carrot are cooked until tender, then combined with white beans, marinated thoroughly, and topped with delicious Yogurt-Sesame Sauce. You can make both the salad and sauce a day or two in advance, and refrigerate them in separate tightly covered containers. (Leave out the fresh herbs until shortly before serving.)

1 1/2 pounds carrots
1 15-ounce can white pea beans, rinsed and drained
1/3 cup extra virgin olive oil
1/4 cup red wine vinegar
2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
1 teaspoon minced garlic
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon cumin
Black pepper to taste
1/4 cup finely minced parsley
3 scallions, minced
2 to 3 tablespoons minced fresh dill
Yogurt-Sesame Sauce (recipe follows)

Peel or scrub the carrots, and cut them into thin, flat matchstick pieces about 1 1/2 inches long and 1/4 inch wide. Steam until just tender (5 to 10 minutes), then refresh them under cold running water, and drain well.
Transfer the carrots to a medium-large bowl, and add the beans, oil, vinegar, lemon juice, garlic, salt, cumin, and pepper. Mix well, cover, and refrigerate for at least several hours (and up to several days).
Stir in the parsley, scallions, and dill within about 30 minutes of serving time. Serve cold or at room temperature, topped with a healthy dollop of Yogurt-Sesame Sauce.

YOGURT-SESAME SAUCE

1/2 cup sesame seeds
3/4 cup yogurt
2 tablespoons finely minced parsley
1 tablespoon light honey
1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice
1/2 teaspoon minced garlic
1/4 teaspoon salt
Up to 1/3 cup water (optional)

Whirl the seeds in a blender or electric spice grinder for about 15 to 20 seconds, or until ground to a fine meal. (Don't let it turn into a paste.) Transfer to a medium-small bowl.
Add all remaining ingredients, except the water, and mix until well combined. Thin with water to desired consistency. Store in a tightly covered container in the refrigerator.

Russian Carrot Pie

1 tbsp butter
1 cup finely minced onion
1 lb carrots, thinly chopped (I used an extra 1 lb bag of baby carrots leftover from holiday snacking)
1/2 tsp salt
2 garlic cloves, minced
2 tbsp lemon juice (about 1 lemon)
1 tbsp AP flour
1 1/2 cups cottage cheese
1 egg
3 tbsp fine bread crumbs
black pepper
3 tbsp minced dill
2 tbsp minced mint
1 tsp smoked paprika
1/4 cup Parmesan cheese

Nut Pie Crust (below)

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Melt the butter in a large skillet and add the onion and garlic and cook about 3-5 minutes. Next, add the carrots, salt and lemon juice. Cook until the carrots are soft but not mushy — about 8 more minutes. Sprinkle with the flour, mix well, and cook for about 2 more minutes. Remove from the heat.

Beat the egg with the cottage cheese in a large bowl. Stir in the herbs, some black pepper and the breadcrumbs. Add the carrot mixture (it’s okay if it’s still hot) and combine well.

Spread into the crust and sprinkle with paprika and Parmesan cheese.

Bake for 15 minutes at 375 degrees, then turn the heat down to 350 degrees and bake for another 30 minutes. Let cool for at least 5 minutes before slicing. Serve hot, warm or at room temperature.

Nut Crust
6 tbsp cold butter
1 cup AP flour
1/4 cup whole wheat flour
1/2 cup finely minced nuts (I used walnuts)
1/4 tsp salt
1 tbsp chopped chives
3-6 tbsp cold water

Use a pastry cutter or a food processor to cut the butter into the flours, salt, nuts and chives. The mixture should get to the point where it resembles course cornmeal.

Add the liquid a little at the time until the dough comes together. I used all 6 tablespoons, but you never know.

Wrap the dough in plastic wrap for storage in the fridge. After about an hour or so, roll it out using flour and place into a 9-10 inch pie plate, forming a crust with an edge.

I chose to par-bake my crust — 20 minutes at 375. I used some parchment and dry beans to weight the crust down. After 20 minutes, remove the crust, take out the weights (beans, beads, whatever) and fill with the carrot mixture and proceed.

Thanks CC! YUM, I will definitely try these.

Slamon, CC's posts had nothing to do with your posts. All your posts did was contradict hers. And my commending her information, accuracy, and writing style had nothing at all to do with you.

Classic- Not only are your recipes true to your name - classic - but your writing is classy as well. That is very interesting and informative. I'm always amazed at how much you know about food - and now apparently- history, too.

My mom used to make something she called Armenian Eggplant. What's the difference between that and Baba G.?
