hidden programs
Posted: 8/6/2006 3:08:33 PM
I'm sorry to say this, some of the advice given in these threads is scary and should be taken with a grain of salt. Asking about hidden programs and the such is all good in my eyes, recommending programs like hijack this, and mentioning rootkits is plainly not wise to the average user.

How many people could actualy look at a hijack log and pick out a rootkit? I'm betting there is one or two that can do that. Hijack this is a very powerful tool and should only be used by people that know what there doing with it. Unless the tool itself is placed in the right directory it will not make backups, you mess up you pay the price. Then where are you? messed up with trip to the tech store to recover your lost info and whatnot. Be very! very! careful when using hijack this. In fact post it on a form where there are experts that can guide you through the use of it.

I await the flames, make them interesting have fun.

uninstalling programs
Posted: 8/2/2006 1:09:36 PM
The best way to rid any programs that wont come out in reg add/remove is to head into safe mode.

To do this.

1. Restart your computer
2. After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3. Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4. Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Once there go into add/remove programs.

That should help in removing it, after that boot back into regular mode and it should be gone.

IMPORTANT --> Spyware - Popups, Homepage Changing, etc

Just another quick suggestion, not sure if it will help or not but worth a shot.

Goto start > run type in your address you want to get to and click ok, see if that helps.

Or download a different browser such as firefox or opera, and try that. If your using Internet explorer it may be completely messed up.

Good luck.

Agreed 100%

I was mostly referring to the install of secondary software, stuff you can find on the net that microsoft has no control over.

Being in the spyware removal biz for the best part of two years, the one thing i have seen not mentioned is read the EULA (End user license agreement) it usualy precceds the install of programs. It's really surprising what these actually say. Some will outright say in order to use this software you must accept the download of blah blah.

Use of hijack this is dangerous when not familiar with it, as mentioned in a previous thread post on the forum, where tech's that know how to read them.

Hope this help's good luck :)

Just a suggestion, try this.

Click on "Start", then on "Run" ; type this in the box :

shutdown -a

and hit "Enter". That will give you all the time you need to proceed with cleanup.

As it does sound like the sasser worm problem, here is the fix for it.

http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/FxSasser.exe

Just paste the url into your address bar it will download automatically to your machine, good luck.
