Ghost Hunting In Calgary

The Rosedale hotel in Wayne, just outside of Drumheller, is sort of cool. Stay the night. Dare ya. But the really scary thing in that area is the haunted coal mine tour. They get some retired pedophile to take people into this old mine that really might collapse at anytime. It's dark, smells like the devil, every little noise sounds like the Exorcist times ten, like bees in fast forward. And don't forget the pedophile. I'm still f'ed up from last year. I think maybe coal miners make miserable ghosts.

How did you know this guy was a pedophile? I'm sure they didn't volunteer this information. Did you "catch" anything?

On the topic of ghosts has anyone ever heard of the +15 being haunted? I get this distinct creepy feeling in a certain area and always have. Like eyes watch me.

Perhaps there's high EMFs in that area. Anyone have a meter?

Three of the creepiest places I've been in Alberta have been torn down, but I'll relate them.

It seems to me that hospitals, prisons, and hotels are the best places for finding paranormal activity. Makes sense considering the number of deaths.

However, heard today on 90.3 there's a place just outside of town called Devil's playground. Was supposedly a school and the ghosts are children. Anyone hear of that? If so, got any details on location?

Okay, I've done a little research on this and here's what I found:

The Devil's Playground (also called Symon's Playground or The Abandoned Schoolhouse) is located on private property.

Directions: Go east on 17 Avenue SE, past 68 Street, turn left on 84 Street, at the last set of lights before leaving the city limits you will see a house and a burnt down school on your left hand side. (On 84 Street between 16 Avenue SE & 17 Avenue SE)

The Legend: Back in the day, a fire was started in the hallway of this schoolhouse and it claimed the lives of 3 children. Witnesses have reported the sound of children playing and laughing. After their deaths, they tried to tear the building down (it was left standing for almost 2 years afterwards). During their first attempt, almost half of the city workers fell awfully sick. For their second attempt, they brought in a wrecking ball but the motor just up and died and they couldn't figure out why. However, back at their construction site, it was fine and working again. During their third and final attempt, the wrecking ball actually fell off while the group was still looking at the plans to carry out.

The Stories: There is much Internet folklore regarding this location. People have claimed that they've heard children laughing and playing (even though there were no children around). Others have claimed that their flashlights kept going off while in the schoolhouse (only to work fine after they left). There are also stories of seeing small child-sized footprints made in the snow (when they weren't there before). There are also claims that the property owner was the uncle of one of the children who died there and he's been known to shoot trespassers with salt pellets if they were found on his property. He has also been known to unleash dogs on unsuspecting trespassers.

The Finds: The schoolhouse is in rough shape. Apparently, there are stairs that lead to a basement area where most of the supposed paranormal activity takes place. Next to the worn down structure is a boarded up house, which witnesses have claimed to be more chilling than the schoolhouse. Inside this house, there is an overturned metal sculpture that looks like an old bathtub or woodburning furnace. Some have referred to it as a "magic fountain". Others have claimed seeing dead birds (most likely pigeons), skeletal remains of a dog/coyote/fox and "cut up" gophers and pigeons with blood everywhere.
One person claims to have set his camera down on the stairs briefly to light up a smoke, walking around a bit with a flashlight, then returning to retrieve his camera only to find that it wasn't there anymore (he was by himself). This person also warns others who go there to bring an extra pair of shoes as you will have picked up some post-mortem liquids that have gelled on the floor from freezing.

The Reality: There is evidence this location has been visited so often by drunken/stoned teenagers looking for a good time, amateur ghost hunters, and others looking for a thrill that there is not much left of these buildings. Safety is an issue because the structures are not secure and people have reported to have fallen from shaky foundations and missing stairs because the buildings are so worn out. Some have reported seeing weird writings in blood telling people to "get out" or "look behind you" and if you look around, there is a hole in the drywall that looks like a severed head staring at you (made of paper mache). In other words, someone has gone through a lot of trouble to try to scare any visitors.

Scare Factor: Aside from it looking creepy, I'd conclude that the scariest part of visiting this place is the fear of being shot with salt pellets or attacked by dogs. Why people insist on trespassing instead of simply asking for permission is beyond me. Also, the condition of the old house and schoolhouse is such that one may fall through the floorboards or stairs and that is much scarier than any possible "ghosts" there.

Debunking: The flashlights going off could be explained by the fact that many of the visitors go when it's freezing cold outside and cold temperatures have been known to drain batteries. Also, many have admitted to using dollar store flashlights/batteries. The sounds of children could be attributed to neighboring acreages, as one witness observed. The dead birds/gophers have been described by some to look like like were mauled by a cat. As one witness pointed out, he also noticed the skeletal remains of a dog/coyote/fox which indicates there is wildlife out there that could be feasting on birds/gophers. The tracks in the snow could be attributed to the fact that this location is a big draw for teenagers and young people looking for a "spooky" good time. It is not uncommon for people to go in large groups, split up, and play tricks on each other. Quite often, there is alcohol or weed involved, lessening the validity of claims of paranormal activity.

That being said, I still wouldn't mind checking it out. If anyone is interested, please e-mail me. However, now is probably not a good time as everyone is wanting to do something spooky for Halloween. In other words, everyone and their dog will be there.

be careful if you go here. Its private property and I've heard the owner has some dogs that he lets loose. I've also heard stories about the owner shooting at people with salt pellets but I don't know if its true. Also the school is in pretty rough shape and not very structurally sound, so use caution if you go inside

Is this the one that the city tried to demolish on 2 or 3 separate occasions but for some strange reason, things would happen to prevent it from being demolished?

Just read this in Yahoo....thought it might be of interest to you ghost hunters. Told ya, hotels are the place to find ghosts.

Why is it that only old buildings are haunted? People die in newer buildings too but you never hear about these places being haunted.

Both my daughters work at Sheldon Chumir, They've both encountered a ghost in what used to be the veteran's ward, doors opening and closing, papers moving from one room to another, footsteps. The younger one refuses to work after dark because she is right there all shift. but you can't go hunting there seeing as it belongs to the Health Region

It seems like hospitals are rich with activity. Too bad one can't just go into a hospital and ghost hunt! I've always hated hospitals as a kid and even moreso now. But it makes sense because nowadays, most people pass away in hospitals as opposed to residences, hence it's mostly older houses/apartments that see a lot of activity.

A friend of mine used to live in an apartment complex in Bridgeland that she swore was haunted. I was a diehard skeptic at the time but now that I think back, it was entirely possible given that there was a known suicide that took place there (a girl leapt to her death off the balcony) and there has always been a lot of "negative" energy there (ie. domestic disputes, poverty, etc).

When you've seen one orb, you've pretty much seen them all.

Most orbs aren't paranormal. They are dust, snow, glare, etc.

I haven't been to the Deane house yet but was planning a visit there, in addition to Heritage Park. I have heard the stories about the Rose & Crown but I guess no one is allowed in the "haunted areas".

Thanks for the suggestions. I have heard about the "legends" of the Banff Springs Hotel. It's funny some hotels keep the ghost chats down and others hype it up - it seems to me that the ones who hype it up tend to get pretty busy, especially this time of year!

Let me start by stating, I am a skeptic. I was never one who believed in ghosts or life after death. I don't believe in psychics. I do believe in hard, scientific proof. Seeing is believing. That being said, I am looking to do a little amateur ghost hunting in the Calgary area (before doing some big time ghost hunting in Arizona next year). No fancy equipment here - just my digital camera, a camcorder, and a digital voice recorder. Just wondering if anyone out there has any suggestions as to some haunted places other than the usual (Deane House, Fort Calgary, Prince House, etc). I am looking to debunk as much as I am looking to prove.

Hockey Playoff Pool Awards 2009
Posted: 6/12/2009 10:09:32 PM
Staying true to our tradition started 4 years ago, I've compiled a list of awards to be given out to select individuals based on their performance this year. If you don't get an award, that's okay. There's always next year! If you DID get an award, and you didn't want that award, don't be offended or alarmed, remember, it's all in good fun!

Stanley Cup winner & Conn Smythe Trophy winner: riot13! (thank you, thank you...)
The top spot had eluded riot13 for the duration of the contest, always placing second whether it be to ratherb or to kaos. After an impressive first round, riot took a tumble after a rough second round, only to rebound in the third round and finally, take over top spot at the very end.

Rocket Richard Award (given to the player who accumulated the most points at the end of the season): riot13! (I'd like to thank....) There was no bonus questions (other than the very last one), no wagering, no gambling, and riot still ended up tops with 302 points!

Comeback Kid Award (given to the player who had to make up a lot of ground in order to get to where they ended up at the end of the season): riot13! (what, of course, this isn't rigged!). riot enjoyed a place at the top after the first round, placing 2nd to ratherb, only to fall from grace in the second round, ending up in 5th spot. Through consistent play and perseverance, riot scratched and clawed her way back up to 3rd behind kaos and donnydude, before landing in the top spot (finally) after Game #7 of the Stanley Cup final. Honorable Mention goes to donnydude, who had a string of good luck in the third round, propelling himself into 2nd spot but in the end, picked the wrong team to win.

High Rollers Awards (given to the player who accumulated the most points in the season without having to play that many games): greyarea! Imagine if greyarea actually started at the beginning with the rest of us and played individual games, we may be looking at a different winner! Garnering 185 points from finals play alone (with the odd series picks at the beginning), greyarea was almost never wrong, including predicting Pens in 7 for the final and collecting 80 massive points in the end to wind up in 9th place overall.

Steve Smith Award (given to the player with the biggest mistep, causing them to lose as a result of such mistep, like Steve Smith scoring on his own net in Game 7 of an Oilers/Flames series): ratherbgolfing! Having secured top spot after the first round, ratherb's "mistep" came after he got back from vacation and changed some of the predictions he had previously posted. The Game 3's were the turning point. He correctly picked the winning teams and scores for Car/Bos and Pitt/Wash but changed his picks and ended up getting 1 point instead of a possible 12! Same went for the Ana/Det game, collecting 1 point instead of a possible 6. After that, things just went downhill for poor ratherb and he was not able to make up ground. Honorable Mention goes to kaos, who most likely would've won this year had he picked the correct team to win the Stanley Cup!

Eric Lindros Award (given to the player who showed the most promise at the beginning of the season and thus had high expectations, only to lose steam towards the end): ratherbgolfing! After the first round, the player to fear was ratherb! Players did not want to go against him because he supposedly knew his stuff! Then, for some strange reason, he picked Chicago and Carolina to win in round 3, and things went downhill from there.

Murphy's Law Award (given to the player who just couldn't catch a break no matter how hard he/she tried): smitten! This was a tough one because there were quite a few players up for this award. smitten for some reason had the worst luck of all, simply not being able to catch a break, right from the beginning. Poor smitten finished with a mere 117 points, despite having started right at the beginning and playing almost all individual games. Honorable Mention goes to cincin, who like smitten, started at the very beginning playing almost all individual games, still could not rise up from the middle of the pack where all the series only players were.

Stuck In The Middle Award (given to the player who despite playing a lot of games, just couldn't break away from the pack): smitten! This award really does seem to go hand in hand with the Murphy's Law Award. With chiefs not around to defend his title(s) with these two awards, smitten collects both. smitten, if you remember, was an Honorable Mention for this award last year. This year, she collects! Again, cincin gets the Honorable Mention.

Joe Who Award (given to the player who placed the highest despite never getting any ice time): tropicalfish! Having won this award last year, it was tropicalfish again, who placed the highest by playing only series predictions and no individual games, but still ending up with 135 points.

Hat Trick Award (given to the player with the most points scored in a single game): donnydude! For the games posted May 17&18, donnydude collected 15 points each for correctly getting the winning team and score for the Det/Chi game (5-2 respectively) and Pitt/Car game (3-2 respectively) and collected 30 points for that single post. Now there was a player who did better with 3 correct scores in a post but as we all know (sorry ratherb), he changed his scores.

Half An Award (given to the player who just couldn't hold the top spot on his own and had to share it - this award is to be shared as well): no winner. This year was unlike any other year in that there was no duking it out for top spot. ratherb held the top spot before surrendering it to kaos, who had very little competition as he surged ahead of everyone. donnydude gave it a shot but kaos ran away with it until the very bitter end when riot and passion rose up and took the top spots.

Five For Fighting Award (given to the player(s) who instigates the worst on-ice fight - best scrap): no winner. With smack noticeably absent from this year's contest, the pool was unusually ... at peace. There was no fighting, bickering, name-calling - it almost didn't feel like hockey! Despite efforts from cincin to gets things going, no one would drop their gloves. Everyone collects on a Lady Byng.

Congrats to all winners and again, if you didn't win an award, don't feel bad. There's always next year.

Have a great summer everyone!

Congrats to tropicalfish, fab14, ratherb, passion, and riot for calling the team and gain 40 points!

I didn't it would be 1 point between Kaos and I. What if neither one of us nails the Con Smythe winner? Although I am leaning toward Ozzie at this point as well.

If neither gets the Conn Smythe winner and you get the correct score and kaos doesn't, you will win by a single point! And probably take Comeback Kid Award from donnydude too! That is, again, assuming Detroit will win, which they most likely will.

Assuming Det will win in 7, cincin can still beat kaos if she calls the correct score and he doesn't. In this event, cincin would win by one single point! HOWEVER, the decider would then be the bonus question of the Conn Smythe winner. kaos picked Osgood and cincin picked Hossa. At this rate, looks like kaos would win the bonus question, unless it goes into overtime and Hossa scores the game winner!

passion is the only player to collect full points for the win and score - 30 pts.

ratherb, greyarea, cincin, & riot collect 10 for the win.

donnydude, smitten, fab14, kaos, & sunshine do not collect.

At the risk of sounding presumptuous, looks like cincin may be the only one collecting 80 points for this round, being the only one to predict Det in 7.

If in some bizarro world Pitt is to win at the Joe, hawaiianluau, greyarea, and sunshine would collect 80 points. And sunshine, you were about to give up on your team!

This is very much anyone's game.

Did anyone predict Detroit 4-0?

No, although I'm thinking it's looking that way. 4 players stand to gain 40 points (at least):
cincin (Det in 7)
smitten (Det in 6)
kaos (Det in 6)
donnydude (Det in 6)

The rest of us went with Pitt:
tropicalfish (Pitt in 6)
fab14 (Pitt in 6)
ratherb (Pitt in 6)
hawaiianluau (Pitt in 7)
greyarea (Pitt in 7)
passion (Pitt in 6)
riot (Pitt in 5)
sunshine (Pitt in 7)

Det 3 Pitt 1

You know you've made a mistake when you find yourself inadvertently cheering for the team you didn't pick! Ah well, that's what you get when you go with your heart and not your head!

No one got the score but ratherb, cincin, smitten, kaos, donnydude & sunshine score 10
apiece.

Times running out here and I know I won't get a chance to post tomorrow so...

I'm calling Pitt in 5, Sid The Kid for Conn Smythe

Game #1: Pitt 3 Det 2

Basing this on the injuries that have plagued Detroit and the possibility of key players not returning to the lineup.

My heart is with Detroit but my head is telling me Pitt

And here I am the opposite! My head is telling me Detroit and my heart is telling me Pittsburgh. Still not entirely sure which way to go yet although almost everyone seems to be on the Pittsburgh bandwagon.

i think last year we chose our pick for the conn aswell didnt we?

Yes, we did that as one of our bonus questions... seeing as it's the finals, why not!

Pick the Conn Smythe winner and you get an extra 5 points! Deadline is the same.

THE BIG ONE!

Please post your predictions for the Stanley Cup finals before Sat. May 30 12pm NOON EST. 40 points for the correct team, another 40 points if you call the correct number of games! So it's still anybody's game and I'd imagine there will be some strategy involved here also. Individual games will pay out 10 for the win and another 20 if you call the correct score for a possible 30 points for individual games. No OT bonuses.

I am torn here. My brain says Det in 6 yet my heart says Pitt in 5. I'll let it sink in a bit before posting.

Remember, 20 points for the correct team, another 20 for calling the correct number of games:
- unlike other rounds, there was no overwhelming consensus so this was interesting
- only one player called a series (yes, thank you thank you)

Series Only Tally:
riot: 60 points (Det series called, Pitt correct)
cincin: 40 points (both teams correct)
kaos: 40 points (both teams correct)
dirtydeeds: 40 points (both teams correct)
donnydude: 20 points (Det correct)
fab14: 20 points (Pitt correct)
passion: 20 points (Pitt correct)
sunshine: 20 points (Det correct)
tropicalfish: 20 points (Pitt correct)
smitten: 0 points (can't seem to catch a break)
ratherb: 0 points (what happened????)
