Hello, er -- Serenity.
Wow, strange voices and an additional install, huh? Sounds weird! Keep us posted.
I was running either AdAware or SpyBot (sorry; I forget which one it was) a month back, and I had looked at the screen and the running tally it displays said it had found maybe three or four questionable objects ... then a minute later, a window popped up and said the scan was complete, and it had found NO errors ...(?!).
I closed the window without thinking, and discovered the program was still chugging away ... so the question is, what was trying to convince me that AdAware/SpyBot was finished?
That said, I used to get a lot of Fanbox e-mail in my Yahoo account -- which I set up just for spam. I never recognize any of the names on those e-mails, so they get marked as spam pretty quickly.
Anyway, good luck with your system! Hope the "possession" is temporary and benign.

Haven't looked too deeply into this myself (from the PC perspective), but have you looked into Mac emulation on the PC? I think there's an emulator that will emulate a Mac running Mac OS X ....

Opinions about the Apple I-MAC, g3 & g4.

Message for my Fellow Mac-folk:
... but first, thanks for the link to MacTheRipper! Very nice ...!
That said, went to bed one night with 1GB in my G4 PowerBook ... woke up the next day with 512MB showing in the About This Mac window.
Clicked the "More Info" button then "Diagnostics" in the System Profiler, and it told me my lower RAM slot had failed the power-on self-test.
Made preparations to buy another DIMM, then discovered that this was a common problem (and under warranty) with G4 PowerBooks (thanks to MacOSXHints).
Called Apple. They had me do the PMU ("Power Management Unit") test: Turn off and unplug the laptop, remove the battery, and hold down the power switch for about five seconds (I did 10), then reconnect everything, start it up again and check the amount of memory available (both with just the About This Mac ... menu item and the System Profiler).
Since my PowerBook still was only seeing half a gig, they are sending me a box to mail my system in for a FREE repair.
Just wanted to post this so no one else runs out and buys another DIMM unnecessarily.
Good luck to all ......

I just *had* to read your profile to see what the "says it all" e-mail said, and I gotta say, wow --! I guess that's the whole bit about anonymity on the internet fueling that particular e-mail.
I play chess online every so often (okay, so maybe *too* often). I've always perceived chess as a game of royalty, which kind of suggests good manners ... so imagine my surprise when I beat this guy, and he proceeds to swear at me!
So much for manners ... so it's not just here. Strange, though, to see that kind of language coming from someone of the female persuasion!
Scary ...

Here's a direct quote from an ex-gf:
"My doctor changed my medication ... and I'm much better now!"
This line delivered with a strange smile, a glassy stare, and several self-assuring nods of the head!
Silly me, I went for it ... but the first irrational temper tantrum she threw, I was out the door, and screening my calls!
The medication? Prozac.

What book are you reading right now?

Hi ...
I'm reading Dean Radin's latest, "Entangled Minds: Extrasensory Experiences in a Quantum Reality."
Just started reading it, so no assessment as yet, but the radio interview I heard (Coast to Coast AM) was pretty interesting.
Spooky, sorry about your mom ...! Tonight (29MAY06 for those reading too late) on Coast to Coast AM there will be a discussion of the DaVinci Code by a couple people that have walked in the same research steps as the original source (the guy who wrote "Holy Blood, Holy Grail", whose name I forget). Should be interesting ... whether you've read the book or not.
If you don't know where to listen, type the name of the show into your address bar, take out the spaces, and add a dot com.
Good luck, Spooky!

Tonights Date from hell part 2

Rainbowfishh --
Out of curiosity, what type of TV viewing habits would you prefer in a guy?
Myself, I just don't care for reality TV ... though I have to confess though that I did watch Joe Millionaire ... and I was able to pick the girl he'd end up with after the second episode (yeah, I'm lots of fun at movies; I can usually figure out the broad strokes of a plot within the first ten minutes ... which, I usually (well, nowadays) keep to myself).
I guess that dislike comes from my desire to write for TV (20 minute script at one page per minute would yield a nice check for about $10,000 -- but that was as of 1988 or so). Reality TV puts good script writers out of work, IMO ... and Fear Factor? Why bother?
Anyway ... Rainbowfissh? If you please ....

Opinions about the Apple I-MAC, g3 & g4.

Hi, Bev. Good to "meet" you as well.
I'm stuck with Virtual PC 7.x. Fortunately, my PowerBook has 1GB of RAM ... and what I'm using it for is to run a PC-only program called digitalCAT, which is a program used by court reporters to translate the strokes from their steno strokes into English, and sent the info to a laptop.
I'm only at about 100 wpm, but my instructor is at 200 ... and the translation doesn't stutter when she's using it ...!
Very nice ... and my PB is a *lot* lighter than my old Toshiba laptop ... but still, VPC does have some weirdness about it ... and sometimes the OS thinks I'm not "doing" anything and will put the system to sleep while I'm testing ....! Can't have that ...!
To fix that, I just switch to the Finder, and it doesn't go to sleep (not sure why).
As for that Parallel virtualization thing, it looks like a *great* deal; combine an install of that with the drivers made by Boot Camp, and you've got a (as LL used to say) "Boomin' System."
I'm hoping the rumors are true, and that Apple has something like this up their sleeves. May have to trade in one of my nephews to get one of those new laptops ...! (I'm farily sure their mom won't mind, if I time it right ....)
Good luck!

Hi ....
I'm about a month late here, but ... well, here goes.
As with any computer system, there are two rules to keep in mind:
One: Max out that RAM ...!
Two: Max out that hard drive!! (the "Bigger is Better" rule)
With Macs, you want to get one that can run MacOS X. Sure you can get by in System 9, but MacOS X has that "Unixy Goodness." Do a search for "every mac" on Google. You can check to see which OS the model you're thinking about buying will run.
I recommend MacOS X because the browsers of MacOS 9 are no longer being updated (except iCab and a few others) ... and even fewer e-mail programs are being updated.
When buying a system, make sure the modem works; if your cable/DLS/etc. dies, you'll want to use the modem to connect. Can't do it if the modem doesn't work.
If you can, an iMac with a DVD drive is great ... but if you can get a Super Drive (burns CDs *and* DVDs), much better.
If you end up with one that just plays DVDs, no problem ... pick up a USB CD burner, if that's a priority to you.
If you want to get into bigger bucks, a G4 PowerBook is the way to go. I picked up one on small dog's site. They were having a special: They would upgrade the 512 MB of RAM to 1GB ... so for $1650, I got a 15" PowerBook with 1GB of RAM, a Super Drive, running MacOS X 10.39 (one step away from the latest (10.4).
Virtual PC runs with acceptable speed with that 1GB of memory to play with; indeed, I have begun leaving my PC laptop at home and using my Mac for steno duty at my local court reporting school (works *great!*).
If you're really new to Macs, you might see if you have a Macintosh User's Group in your area. Great groups of folks, that won't hesitate to help someone new to the Mac -- often at no charge.
Games? Ambrosia Software (SW) ... try Aperion. Or Maelstrom. Or Ferazel's Wand.
Graphics programs? Graphic Converter and Photoshop. Use GC for the easy stuff, and keep Photoshop for the heavy lifting.
Magazines? MacAddict, Macworld, and Mac Format (the first and last have CDs full of software every issue).
Cool feature? Speak Text (select text, choose "Speak Text," and the basic text editor will read to you; great for kids trying to learn to read!).
I could go on, but I'll spare you.
Good luck with your purchase ... and don't forget to play Nanosaur (or if you're lucky, Nanosaur II) -- but do that when the kids are asleep ... otherwise, you've just lost your Mac.
Sorry about that.

Advice needed on how to deal with an obssesive co-worker

Glad to hear things worked out for you -- more or less.
Alas, I have to echo the sentiments of everyone else posting in this thread: Assume the worst, carry *some* sort of disabling weapon/device/innocuous object, and trust your inner fear (you *have* heard of the book, "The Gift of Fear," right?).
I really, *really* hope that this guy will get the hint and move on ... but I hope you heed the advice provided to you in this forum.
Are there any krav maga (the fighting art used by Jennifer Lopez in her movie "Enough) classes in your area? Maybe aikido? Hopefully you won't need any of these, but prepared is better, I say.
Let us know what happens ...

Hmmm ...
Just in case, you didn't erase those messages on your answering machine yet, did you? In cases like this, the more evidence you have, the better.
If you have, that may not be a problem ... because chances are you're going to get a few more calls ... and if you do get more messages, you should be able to record them onto your computer or a tape (computer is better; easier to make copies. Check Download dot com and look for Audacity ... and don't forget to download the LAME encoder (allows you to save your recordings as .mp3s)).
E-mails with full headers are a good thing as well. Print those out and make a copy of each of them (assuming he's sent you any), and keep the originals stashed away somewhere in your house/apartment, and submit the copies with your complaint (though I really hope you don't need to do any of these tactics I'm suggesting)).
Again, good luck.

That *sounds* like good advice, but most often when a guy gets dumped, he didn't see it coming, and has no idea what happened.
Most of the time.
Hopefully the Doug (the original poster) is not so afflicted, and can remember what went wrong in past relationships ... and is smart enough not to repeat the same bunder with this potential Ms. Right.
Hopefully.
Good luck, Doug!

Advice needed on how to deal with an obssesive co-worker

Hi ...
I think (if you haven't already) showing him a picture of your father and giving him the "creep out factor" story as suggested by afishcalledmike might serve to better illustrate your "dilemma" to him. If he can see the resemblance, it might convince him that there just might be a psychological problem with a gal dating a Xerox of her dad.
They say a picture is worth a thousand words; time to put that adage to a test ...!
On the off chance that this doesn't work, do you have an ex-boyfriend that can "suddenly" drop back into your life?
Ideally, this would be a guy who is bigger than your co-worker, and understands that you're ONLY BORROWING HIM TO GET RID OF THE CO-WORKER, and not looking to rebuild anything (he is an ex, after all, and probably for a reason; no need to change a bad situation for one as bad -- or worse, right?).
You might also do a Google search; a well-crafted query should find you a *lot* of additional advice.
Good luck! Sorry not to be of more help.

The worst internet date of all time
Posted:
3/20/2006 11:49:24 PM
Hmmm ...
Perhaps not as scary as some of the others (and indeed, not an internet date), but still telling.
I once met in a bookstore a few years back. Two tips for that ... first, be aware of which section you're standing in! (Self Help section is a Yellow Flag!).
Second, check out the books she's getting ready to buy! If you see anything with the phrase "anger management" anywhere in the title, that's a Big Red Flag!!
Alas, I was younger and less wise (okay, saying "young and stupid" is fair, here), so we hooked up. Lasted about six months the first time. Seems she was on some sort of medication ((*cough* *cough*) Prozack (*cough* *cough*)) and ran out of pills. Talk about your personality change ...! She would snap at me for no reason, yell at her son for the same reason, cry for that same reason, etc.
Finally (about a day or so), I gave up on the relationship, and made myself scarce -- that is, didn't call, managed to be "not at home" when she did call, etc.
Three months went by, and I got a call from her. After exchanging pleasantries, she said to me, "My doctor has changed my medication ... and I'm much better now ...!"
I think I heard a character from that old sitcom "Night Court" say that once ... that character being played by the late John Astin (Gomez from "The Addams Family," for those of you who go that far back).
So, we got back together. Lasted about a month (she needed stronger medication!).
Finally, Fran Gal, share those stories! The teaser was interesting by itself ...
