The boys are off to the Roxy and a few other venues on Granville St.
The young have such stamina , they have to get up at 5am
Oh to be young.
Thanks for your suggestions!

Best place of my nephews to go out & have fun
Posted:
2/5/2008 3:15:09 PM
My nephews are in town (aged 25 and 22), they just got back from Whistler where they had a very large blast of fun and a lot of boarding. They want to go out tonight (Tuesday Feb 5) for some downtown Vancouver fun. They aren't pretentious and they don't have the clothes for a la-tee-dah club like Au Bar. I'd like to steer them clear of the real dives and I'd like to keep them away from the really strange places.
Does anybody have any idea where I can send them? I live downtown and would prefer something in the core.
I'm way too dull and boring to know the hot spots except when it comes to Plenty of Fish events!
Thanks!

I'd be up for a regular wing night closer to downtown. It would be a nice late week break and I love chicken wings!

A sunny weekend!
Posted:

I went through Stanley Park last weekend -- that was as depressing as the weather.
I think I'm going to head out to White Rock on Saturday for some chish and fips and a walk along the water. On Sunday I think I'll get the bike tires pumped up and put the rack on the car and head out for a ride on the dikes in Richmond. Gotta get toughened up for a summer of riding.
LET THE SUN SHINE!

Trees over People?????
Posted:
1/12/2007 4:30:23 PM
At this point, private citizens and businesses cannot physically help with the cleanup of Stanley Park. It's too dangerous and requires expertise that the average Vancouverite tree hugger doesn't have.
I don't really see the need to replant Stanley Park. It needs to be cleaned up and something useful done with the blowdown. I'm all for a more open park. I never liked walking through the centre of the park, it didn't feel very safe to me.
As for Mr. Pattison's contribution. It's his money and I think if you looked at the financial records of most of the major charities in town, you'd find him contributing far more than a million dollars.
The homeless situation stems from a variety of societal ills. The reduction of mental health support is one of the biggest contributors to what we see on the streets today. Our out of control consumerism and high cost of living has made it almost impossible to live on minimum wage in this city. I also see societal breakdown in the family as one of the root causes. There are a lot of young people on the streets who should be at home and going through college or university.
Rather than carp about all this, let's do something. Volunteer where we can. Educate ourselves on the issues. Work towards a reasoned solution. Put our money where our mouths are and where our minds are. Hold our politicians accountable for the crap decisions they keep making.
Oh...and go to Stanley Park with a broom on the weekend and sweep some sidewalk.

Why do we have pets?
Posted:

Cats rule, dogs drool
When my Nimms died 4 years ago I couldn't face having another pet for awhile. Now I've got two Ragdoll cats just coming up on 2 years old. They tear around the house, tussle with each other, chase my toes and generally make me laugh out loud at least once a day.
I think I was a cat in a previous life. I can sleep anywhere, anytime. I get twitchy if you play with my ears.
It sure is nice having the purrballs curl up on my feets in this cold weather!

Snow on the Lower Mainland?
Posted:
11/24/2006 5:51:06 PM
I have a tradition I keep each year. The first visible snow up on Cypress that I can see from my living room window, I hop in the car, drive up there and roll around in the snow like a dog in a mess of leaves. I get up, dust off, drive back down the mountain and say "thank gawd I don't have to shovel that stuff" and bring out my umbrella.
As a transplanted Easterner (23 years now) I still laugh when the snow falls and the umbrellas go up. It's just sooo funny to see people walking in the snow with an umbrella.
I'm a bipedal commuter, I live and work downtown. It's a long 6 block walk to the office. I don't care if it snows, I don't have to drive in it. I do laugh though at how a skiff of snow shuts the city down.
Every Christmas I get to practice my winter driving skills on the Four Freaking One in whiteout conditions in a white rental car with all season radials. What is with those guys...why white cars? It's a hair raising experience making that 50 minute drive to Kitchener from YYZ a nasty experience. After surviving that, I can drive in anything.

CHRISTMAS Baking--or is it too soon to type Christmas
Posted:
11/24/2006 5:37:37 PM
I've got my baking spreadsheet all set to go (gawd I'm such a geek). I have to heigh off to Costco soon and spend a pant load of cash on baking supplies. I need 5 bags of pecans alone to make my Chipotle Pecans. I've got 50 dozen cookies to bake and quite a few litres of nuts n bolts not to mention yule logs.
I watch the grocery ads for deals on the usual baking supplies all through the year and sometimes I find a really good bargain at Liquidators. The freezer tends to get full of supplies just before Christmas and then empties out really fast.
Christmas baking is what I give for presents to all my friends. Each one has their favourite cookie or square and I always have to factor that into the spreadsheet to make sure everyone is covered. Once I have all the quantities in the rows, I know how much of each ingredient I'm going to have to buy.
I usually manage to make it all in one day. I've got this multi-tasking thing I do. The cookies for the oven get mixed and put into the oven. While they are baking, I do a non-baked cookie and get it over and done just as the oven cookies are ready to come out and the next batch of oven cookies is ready to go. I put Christmas music on and I just get right into it. At the end of the day, I go for hot tub at Fitness World to ease my weary bones.
I'm never here for Christmas, I'm always home in Kitchener but I make sure all my friends are stuffed to the gills with enough sweetness to hold them until I return.

First date should be 45 min.
Posted:
11/24/2006 5:25:35 PM
On a first date, I let him do all the talking and exposing. I don't want to hear about past relationships. It's usually sounds like a country and western song "She done me wrong, wrong, wrong"
I keep the topics general, not personal. That's for later. I'd like to see how wide are his interests, do they match any of mine. Does he know how to rub five words together to form a sentence? An hour or two is about all I can handle with a stranger.
A few times that first date has felt like a job interview. Once I just stood up and said, "I don't think I'm suitable for the job of housekeeper/s*x slave" and walked out.
Another first date lasted 5 days but I was young then .
My last first date was a few hours of walking...then I broke my leg a week later, no more walking then.

Do ALL women think that men are stupid??
Posted:

I'm not guilty of thinking all men are stupid but I do have this annoying habit that I am trying to break. I'll say things like "Did you look the door", "Did you turn off the lights", stuff like that. It's not that he's stupid, it's more that I'm a worry-wart.
I try to be conscious of those questions as much as I can...but I still slip up at times and ask the obvious questions.

Looking good for your age
Posted:
10/21/2006 2:08:58 PM
With our mostly negative focus in life, it's always difficult to accept a compliment or positive comment. I always want to say "but" or some other justification or negative followup. Someone says "Wow, you don't look your age" and I seem to respond with "Boy did I feel it though when I rolled out of bed this morning".
I've become better at just acceptance of the compliment and not following it up with either a negative or some further detail or justification. If someone said "What a lovely blouse", I used to say something like "Yeah I got it on sale for $10". Now I just say "Thank you, I love the colour". If someone tells me I don't look my age "50", I just say "Thank you" and smile. If he's tall, dark and handsome...well...I just give him the come hither look and say "Come into my boudoire and I'll show you I'm well seasonsed"
It's always tricky deciding whether to do a return compliment. It's not a tennis match after all. If someone says "You don't look your age", it seems more than a little insincere to say "Neither do you" when they are younger than you but look older than you are. Accept the compliment graciously without the need to followup on a return serve.
I try to find a compliment to give for each person I am interacting with at a party or function at some point during the course of the affair. It keeps me focussed on positive things that are outside my own nervousness or discomfort and in a business context (when done right), it makes me memorable to the other person. On a social level, I think we need to express those positive thoughts we have about others. It helps both ourselves and the recipient of the compliment.
So...y'all don't look your age and that colour looks lovely on you!

Ummm...Yuk Yuk's is at the Century Plaza which is on Burrard St. just south of Nelson across from the Wall Centre. The Sutton is a few blocks further down at Smythe and Burrard. I just checked the Yuk Yuk's website and they haven't moved.
Since I live a block from the Century, can I join in too and at that point is it just admission to the Yuk?

broken flirt radar.............
Posted:

Hmmm.... Flirting 101 seems to be a much needed course. I think I saw something like that on LIFE Network. The hair flip, the eye focus, the touching, the leaning forward thing, the head tilt (I always thought the head-tilters looked clueless) and the hundreds of other signals we give out.
Let's see...Flirting 101M for the guys, Flirting 101W for the women and then Flirting 101P for practicing.
Personally, I think a Flirt-o-meter would work well. Something subtle -- point it at the person who you think might be flirting and find out if s/he really is flirting. Sort of like a Stud-Finder. I take my stud-finder to parties, it's a great conversation opener as I run it across a likely looking guy's chest. If it beeps, I say "oh my..I found a stud". As long as the guy has a sternum, he's a stud .
I have to bring that to the next POF event and see if I can rustle me up some studs.

You know you're from Vancouver when....
Posted:

That was tooooo funny.
How about:
You know you're from Vancouver when....the fog horn goes off at noon, and you check your watch while the tourists look around for where the noise is coming from. Did you know that the fog horn plays the first three notes of Oh Canada?
You know you're from the West Ender when....the 9 o'clock gun goes off, the West Enders check their watches and the rest of the people wonder if there was an explosion on the North Shore.
That list brought back fond memories of a young and inexperienced me learning the ropes in the City. I moved here in 1981 at the age of 25...oh lordy...what an experience that was!
Traffic in Vancouver is nothing like Toronto. The 4-freakin-1 is a nightmare..makes Hwy #1 look like a cake-walk. Of course, I live downtown, I work downtown, I rarely drive except to POF events!

Woody's is a great place to party and it was good to meet some new POFers too!

What do they do behind the scenes in Hospitals!?
Posted:
9/2/2006 12:10:36 PM
I've been in St. Paul's emergency three times, twice arriving by amublance and once by a friend's car. All three times I was fast-tracked and treated as quickly as was possible given the current load in the ER and the ultimate goal was to make sure that I was stable, as comfortable as possible given the injury and then processed and out the door as soon as I was able. I've had kidney stones, a broken shoulder and a broken leg. The broken shoulder ran a close second to the kidney stones for pain (gotta love morphine) but the broken leg was a just a 2 on the pain scale and it was the longest stay (6 hours) because there were a bunch of serious injuries on the floor at the time.
St. Paul's is a very busy ER and too many people come into emergency with non-life threatening and non-serious injuries. Sprained your wrist? Go to a walk-in clinic for cryin out loud. There's no need to plug up the emergency ward. If you can walk, go to your doctor or a clinic. Cut yourself and you aren't bleeding like a stuck pig -- clinic. There should be a bunch of walk-in clinics beside every hospital. If you go to the hospital with an injury that can be treated by a GP...off to the clinic with you. The walk-in clinic near me is one block further than the hospital and is open until 9pm every day.
So what if you have to sit and wait for a few hours with your ouchie...are you dying? No. Are you in excrutiating pain? No. Can you get up and move about? Yes.
One thing I have found is that being polite but firm is necessary. Anger gets you nowhere but reasoned discussion and sticking to the facts always works. Be concise, be patient and be thankful that you have the health care system you have.
Did you know that we also have access to a 1-800 line that is staffed by nurses 24 hours a day. You can call and ask questions. http://www.bchealthguide.org/nurseline.stm Post these numbers on the fridge and program them into your cell phones.
My admiration and thanks to those who work in our hospitals. I could never do it, I'd need admittance to psych ward after the first day.

Gas Prices still a JOKE
Posted:
9/2/2006 11:33:07 AM
A good reply Bulldog!
I found this explanation of gasoline taxes on the Federal website http://www.fin.gc.ca/toce/2005/gas_tax-e.html
It's from 2005 but the taxes still hold true.
Quebec has imposed a carbon tax on the oil and gas companies that will cost the companies $200,000 a year. Look for that appear in gas prices which will further raise the cost of gas because of the taxes.
I wouldn't be surprised to see something tacked onto the price of gas when the Olympics get closer. It doesn't look like we are going to be anywhere near the budget. How I wish Jimmy Pattison was running the Olympic show.
I haven't driven for two months...broke a leg...can't drive a standard with a broken leg. I actually haven't missed the car that much although I'm restricted to the 7km radius of the ole whizzer wheelchair. I'm looking forward to getting back behind the wheel but I will likely continue to drive less. The advantage to living 6 blocks from were I work and 4 blocks from all the shopping I generally need.

whats your fave lake?
Posted:

Sauble Beach -- Lake Huron...memories of my childhood, big waves on a windy day, 7 miles of sand, Dad chasing into the water, 7 kids floating around playing in the waves, kitchy downtown with the DQ, the bowling alley with the warped lanes, candy floss, trampolines, so much fun.
For romantic memories -- Chandos Lake in the Kwarthas.
For local swimming, Buntzen Lake, Alice Lake, Hicks Lake (Sasquatch Provincial Park).
For the gorgeous views, Daisy Lake (Black Tusk), Battleship Lakes (it's a haul and half to get there)
Skinny dipping in that lake that's right beside the highway on the way to Tofino, Anderson Lake I think.
I want to go swimming!

Sleeping with pets
Posted:
8/14/2006 10:53:05 PM
I have two Ragdoll cats and they sleep with me. They have their own bed down at my feet and they pretty much stay down there. At about 3am or so they wake up and play King of the Castle and jump up and down on me. I've got a broken leg and the little butts think it's great fun to bounce around on the boot and pull at the straps. I have one cat with a sock fetish. I had a sock on my foot and over the cast when I first broke it. I woke up that first night with her straddling my leg, all four paws hooked in deep, pulling like a pitbull on the sock trying to get it off my foot.
Early morning wake up call is 6am.
The worst thing...kitty butt in the face.
The best thing...two warm, purr units, one tucked in at the front and one at the back on a cold winter's night.
I have put them out of the bedroom on occasion and shut the door. They aren't too pleased but they will take it.
I don't know if I'd want a dog in the bed though. Dogs smell and I have a sensitive sniffer.

I really can't think of anything I would absolutely need access to at 4am in the morning 'cept maybe a bed warmer :)

Here's what I do to keep cool when it gets really really hot:
- find a bowl that fits your head or failing that, a pot
- get a tea towel soaking wet then wring it out
- put the pot/bowl in the freezer and drap the tea towel over it
- freeze til solid
- put teatowel hat on yer head
It looks funny..but boy is it ever cooling. When you take one out of the freezer, put the next one in.

Men mistaken for Women
Posted:

Way back in time (early 90's) I was on Compuserve on the CB Simulator. We used to have these really big parties (400+ people) that were like conferences. One of the fellas I had chatted with for several years was at Boo Bash for halloween. He dressed up as a woman (he was actually a CD). Man...he looked unbelievable as a woman...and he was handsome as hell as a man. Some guys can just have it both ways.
Why is that men have the long eyelash gene? I've got these stubby lil puppies...life is unfair!

Ya haven't survived until you've had kitty butt in your face and then the furry purry let's one escape. Yeesh that is nasty nasty nasty stuff.
When my mom was a little girl they had a horse called Fritz. Since they didn't have a car, they horse and buggied all over the place. Mom said that Fritz was always farting. She hated sitting in the front seat. She told me that Grandpa (her dad) would wack Fritz on the rump with whip and yell "Fritz, quit farting".
LOL...how come there's no voting to make this topic disappear...lol...I guess it's not a self-pity one.

The trades are definately the way to go..huge shortage of people (male and female) lots of money. I know an HVAC guy who just got his Journeyman thingie and he's pulling 6 figures a year. He's 32.
Pick a good trade, one with future growth and something you are interested in. Heck the government will pay people to learn a trade.

Hunting
Posted:
6/21/2006 10:22:33 AM
My Mom (who is 71) hunts rabbits in the backyward with marbles and a slingshot. She's got the slingshot and marbles by the window. She sees a bunny snackin on her flowers and the window flies open, she loads up and let's fly. Kills the lil puffball or just knocks it out then Dad's got to go finish the job and dispose of the body.
If you eat what you kill (and almost all of it, not just the best bits) then I don't have too much of a problem with hunting. If you like the "hunt" the best, then shoot your target with a paintball instead of a bullet or with a camera.
I don't know why I don't think of shooting ducks, rabbits and other small things less than the size of a deer is OK and anything deer size and up is not OK..but hey..it's the way I think.

What should a man know how to do?
Posted:
6/19/2006 9:08:42 PM
I admire a man who can fix stuff. It's broken -- you hold it out to him or point at it and he goes and fixes it. How do guys learn how to do that?
A man should be able to make things with his own hands, and not just a mess. I've always admired a man who can build things whatever it may be, large or small. My Dad is such a man...he does "stuff" even with only one functional arm, he still manages to do stuff. My Grandpa was the ultimate "stuff" man. He built the house he lived in and it's still standing 75 years later. He built everything, really amazing man. I wonder if I can find one like my Grandpa?
I'm usually disappointed in men who know less than I do about fixing stuff. And a man definitely needs to have more tools than me. Under-equipped men are very disappointing!

are you in the deep discount bin? the odd socks bin?
@Nutha -- I saw a version that had sex in there, nothing about "the Lord"
I've shopped at the 4th floor. Didn't work, he didn't like sex
@Shatir -- love that Jedi light sabre, probably floor 5 with an expiry date way out in 2040

girls who don't date but are on the website

Nutha, guess he hasn't seen you dance, geriatric my ass.
To the OP, PlentyofFish is primarily a dating site. In the course of fishing, you often will meet lots of people you like but aren't interested in dating. You make friends here, lots of friends. Even when you find a partner, you want to keep in touch with your friends. So you set your profile to "Friends" put your pictures to something that's not going to "attract" the wrong kind of attention, edit your profile descriptive text and hang with your friends in the forums and come out to events.
Sometimes, women post pictures with other men because they are shy, insecure and uncertain of how to handle the entire internet dating thing. It's a safety thing. Lots of men are trolling for booty calls and other non-relationship sexual activities. It's tough being young, female and good-looking on this site. You get a lot of crap, especially from older men wishing to re-visit their lost youth. Young women don't seem to want long term relationships from what I've read and what I see here. They aren't ready to settle on just one guy so they will be going for "friends". I talked to one young lady and she told me some horror stories about the propositions she's had.
Be specific with your searches. If you are looking for longterm than run your queries for either longterm or dating. Don't throw it wide open.
I would further suggest that you expand your profile considerably. Most women won't give a flying f#ck that you are good with a bowstaff. It's an accomplishment for sure and I know it takes a lot of work and commitment to master the staff, but, it's a weapon which is also a threat. You need to expand on what you are like, where you are going, what you want in a relationship, what type of woman would you like to meet. While you are certainly not hard on the eyes, you haven't presented any other qualities that act as bait.

POF events in Vancouver......
Posted:
6/18/2006 6:19:56 PM
I think there's no better way to find a potential partner than the POF events. You look at a photo, read a profile, maybe a few forum posts and you write the guy off. Maybe he took a lousy picture, bad lighting, bad clothing choice, whatever. Meet the same man in person in a social atmosphere and it's a whole different ball game. I know two fellas that if you looked at their pictures you might pass them up, but, get to know them, see them in a social setting and oh my gosh...these guys rock! They are both funny, considerate, articulate, intelligent and generally what every woman lists as what she's looking for in a man. Their pictures just don't do them justice.
So...I'd say, come out to the events. If you are interested in meeting some fellas, send them emails and tell them to come on down. You'll be there after all, a good enough reason to show up. Host your own event to stir up more interest.
For the fellas, it's a good way to check out the women. If you aren't sure about someone, do they look like their picture or whatever, well, show up at an event she is attending. Send her an email tell her you are going. You'll see right away and you won't have the uncomfortable feeling of saying "doesn't work for me" when you are one-on-one with a hot beverage in her hand.
So what if you get to an event and there's no one who catches your eye? You'll meet some fantastic people who will make you laugh, ask you to dance, walk you to your car to make sure you are safe, and do all manner of nice things for you.
I know that I have met more interesting, fun, laugh-your-pants-off, people at POF events than I have met in the last 15 years just doing my thing.
It's not a meat market, it's a meet market.

That Diva gal can rock the house...what a voice! What a fun time we had! The food was good, the company was great, the men were willing and the girls shook their boot-ehs. The Cottage Bistro has a nice neighbourhood feel to it too.
Thanks OhDriver for arranging the event!
As for no dancing -- I don't think there will ever be a venue with music where we don't find a way to dance -- ok...maybe if we are at the VSO or the Opera. Somehow, I don't see those venues as a POF event
Happy Father's Day to all the Dad's out there in POFland.

All I can say is thank gawd the Dollar Store has those watch batteries that Mr. Buzzy needs. Ya can have a lotta fun for a buck!
The Pleasure Parties or whatever you want to name them are loads of fun. I always have a blast. It's very entertaining to watch some women unleash themselves.
There's a store where you can learn how to give a BJ. I think I'll sign up for that lesson. Post my certificate as part of my POF profile

I had this bra..a very nice bra. A lift 'em up and out bra. It had strings at the front that criss-crossed, a deep V through the cups. A lovely lovely bra.
I was wearing something low cut, dancing away. Friction got me. The strings rubbed themselves through and the entire bra came apart in the middle. What was up and out was now just plain out .
Luckily I had some stirling silver wire in my purse and was able to wire myself back together again and still look lovely
I've seen those see-thru bathing suits. I've seen some very very nasty sights.

How about a co-share with the barber shop...shave and a BJ...2 bits?
I've always wanted to be the Madame at a bordello. I think I would be very good at it. Employees get shares in the operation..bonuses..health care...vacation, all the bennies...that's benefits.

Parents...how embarassing!!
Posted:

I was 16, bringing a new boyfriend home for the first time. It was a really hot and humid Ontario summer day. I walk into the living room and there's my Dad, sitting in his underwear, reading the paper. He stands up to meet my boyfriend. Shakes his hand, says "hi how are you". I'm mortally embarassed!!!
Next time I bring the same fella home I make him wait outside til I can check if my Dad's in his underwear!

When you go to sleep at night...
Posted:
6/9/2006 9:45:35 PM
I can sleep anywhere, anytime...I'm part cat . Sleeping in my bed, 600 thread count sheets, a two down pillow woman, on my left side, curled up in a ball, windows wide open even in winter, heat off, ear plugs in, cats at my feet (or under the covers if it's particularly chilly). Love the fresh air.
At my parents' house back in Ontario I sleep in the carport bedroom. It's got three outside walls and the floor is the roof of the carport. There's an independent heating unit. In the winter, the temp is set to 40F, the balcony door is open and the heater comes on at least once in the night. I'm sleeping on a bed that's 30" wide and 45 years old, my bed from when I was a kid. I've got three comforters on top of me, bucked naked between the sheets, covers up over my head, only my nose sticks out. I swear, there is absolutely no better sleep than that. I think I like sleeping in the cold because when we were babies, Mom used to bundle us up, put us in the stroller and park us outside in the winter sun for our afternoon naps. I've always liked sleeping in the cold.
I love sleeping!

A 1971 Red Hot Gremlin with a six cylinder engine, a column shifter, bench seat in the front, had 165,000 highway miles on it. The darn thing finally died with 500,000 miles! I used silicone caulking to seal up the rust holes. A lot of fun was had in that car at the drive-in!

There is a British Columbia forum and a party section in there. That's where you will find all the action.
There is a Friday evening patio party at John B's in Coquitlam on June 16. Here's the link to the event.

There are events nearly every weekend now throughout the summer. Lots of POF activities in the BC Pond
