Is coffee bad or good for you?

Thanks so much for that info, Classic Chassis! That's a wonderful compilation of studies.
Aside from car accidents, I hate to think how many exams would have been failed without the aid of coffee for students pulling an all-nighter. But it's also been shown to improve workouts so that you can work out harder and reap more benefits from your exercise.
For someone wanting to lose weight, non-fat evaporated milk tastes better in coffee than any evap with fat in it, plus it doesn't make your coffee watery as skim milk does. Try using stievia instead of sugar. If the coffee makes you more active, it's good for your diet!
My favorite and typical morning beverage is Yirgacheffe ground with a little cinnamon bark and served with evaporated skim milk, honey, chocolate syrup, and coconut milk in a large stein (and then an hour on the bike to work off the coconut milk ...).

Back before the terrible virus that made Tequila unavailable for a time, I used to make a raspberry tequila drink that was a lot like a Marguerita.
I'd pick some fresh raspberries and seive them to get a thick syrup, then whisk castor sugar with it and the juice of a lime. Then, serve with a shot of Cuervo and some ice . . . very nutritious!
Just don't spill it on your keyboard . . .

Gluten Free Baking?

I just came across this rice-based pizza crust:
2 cups cooked rice
1 egg, beaten
1/2 cup shredded mozarella
dash hot sauce
Press evenly into greased 12 inch pizza pan. Bake in 400 F oven for 4 minutes or until set. Sprinkle with cheese, then layer your sauce and toppings, etc.
Haven't tried it yet. If you do, let us know how it held up!

home made salad dressings recipes anyone?
Posted:
7/1/2006 10:59:55 AM
I just came up with a low-fat potato salad dressing recipe with buttermilk. I'm not a fan of mayo unless it's home made, and the recipes for it are typically huge and can't be used up quickly enough. I've become a huge fan of buttermilk, however, after reading the nutrition profile and tasting the results. It has a tart sweetness and 1% milk fat ... loads of nutrients.
¼ cup buttermilk, 1%
2 tbls non-fat sour cream
1 tbls Dijon mustard
1-2 tbls prepared horseradish
1 tbls honey
1 small bunch garlic, roasted
¼ cup fresh dill, chopped
_____________
4 hard boiled eggs
4 large potatoes, steamed but still firm
salt & pepper, to taste
You can adjust the amounts of the condiments and herbs to taste, or experiment with different ingredients.

Making your stew thicker
Posted:
7/1/2006 10:50:30 AM
To get just the right viscosity I usually start out with a roux but, because I like low-fat food, the roux isn't enough so I use arrowroot or cornstarch as well. Using a small amount of butter or oil I'll add flour, then liquid, and then cook it. The advantage of adding the starch later is that you can fine tune it.
So if it turns out that the stew is a bit runny toward the end of the cooking process, I'll whisk some cornstarch or arrowroot powder into some cold liquid--maybe broth, juice, or even ginger beer, depending on the dish--add a little and stir, repeat until it's almost thick enough, then continue cooking.
Guests have been known to freak out a bit when they see me adding pop (ginger beer or ginger ale) to deglaze a pan or whatever, but the results always convince them it was a great idea!

I always avoid men with moustaches because the weirdest sensation is a bristle up your nose during a kiss. Any kind of facial hair is a deal breaker for me . . .
At an early age I remember watching a guy with a beard eat alphabet soup. The sight of letters stuck in his facial hair scarred me for life!

Public Transit Horror Stories
Posted:
5/29/2006 2:09:21 PM
When I travelled to the Canary Islands, I took a bus from the north end of Tenerife to the beach at the south end of the island.
Turned out that the transit company there thought it was ok to take a city bus on the highway. The bus would only do around 40 mph, shaking, noisy, and the doors flapping like crazy, making everyone's ears pop!
After about half an hour of this, I looked down at the floor next to me and realised that the trap door in the floor had come loose from the vibration and slid to the back of the bus, and I could see the road whizzing by underneath. If I'd gotten up without looking, I would have fallen through onto the highway and probably been killed.
That was fairly typical of the way things were done there. I even got an ear infection from the tap water. I could go on about the mishaps of that trip, including a bomb on the plane, rental cars with no windshield wipers or knob on the stick shift, lost luggage . . .

If you ever get the feeling that a guy is putting pressure on you for sex, but doesn't really care whether you're ready or not, that's a huge indication that he's just a selfish ____ fill in the blank! Likewise, if he's only interested in what you can do for him, and doesn't seem to think it's important to demonstrate what he can do for you . . . well, those are his priorities . . . he's wasting your time. Guys like that have never bothered to learn what women need, and never will. If he really cares about you, he will leave no doubt.

Have you tried Echinacea? Or Zinc Lozenges? The best time to treat a cold or flu is right at the start of it. But it also makes a difference what sort of immune system you have. Sounds like yours could use the above herbal stuff to pump it up. My immune system tends to be hyperactive, so I rarely come down with anything beyond itchy gums, as far as viruses go. But then I have to deal with allergies instead . . . right now it looks like I have a bad sunburn, but I haven't been out in the sun--I think it's my Nivea causing it.

Sure, whatever suits. Meeting fairly early in the evening would avoid a busy, noisy atmosphere (I hope). I suggested the Lanc because it's on the Grand River (just past Golf's Steak House).
There are a lot of trails along the Grand River that are well-maintained with plenty of benches. You can find downloadable maps online. We're not allowed to post urls, so please bring any maps you come across to the meeting.
I had been wondering about picnic possibilities, too.
I'm sometimes busy on Thursday's from 8 - 9 pm. Maybe we could meet some time next week?

Hi all!
Would anyone in the Kitchener-Waterloo-Guelph area be interested in group hikes, say, on Sunday afternoons, on some of the local hiking trails?
I am thinking that single women find it difficult to go on a spontaneous hike due to safety concerns, and it would be nice to form a group of trustworthy people to hike with. Possibly, anyone interested could meet the Friday evening beforehand and plan an outing somewhere nearby. I would suggest The Lanc as a place to meet on Friday evenings, because it has long tables, a large parking lot, and is situated on a hiking trail.
Anyone interested, or with alternate suggestions?

That's exactly what you were saying last night, Wendy 1958, when you purposefully ignored me. Thanks for being succinct in a public forum about your motives.
I only mentioned the women who mobbed me, not any others who were having a good time and not trying to exclude anyone.

I'm not confused or paranoid: I know what was going on there. What about some of the other posts, for example, the one I quoted earlier? Another woman experienced something very similar and was very angry about it, though the emoticon she used didn't copy when I quoted her.
Another thing I didn't mention is that outside the club I heard some extremely loud, raunchy comments as I was leaving. Now, I've taught classes of 30 18-year-old welders, so I'm not exactly the sensitive type or the timid type, for that matter. But this was not at all what I expected after reading this forum last week.
Clearly there are different agendas here, but it's not in the interest of men attending these parties if new women are being driven off simply because they aren't unattractive enough.

I was mobbed by hostile women who wanted me to leave. By that, I mean that I was standing looking around and every few seconds, a strange woman with a hostile expression would pass by very close to me. Not the same woman every time, of course. This is documented clique behaviour.
So I would suggest that if you are going to tout these parties as sooooo friendly, then be friendly to everyone, not just the men who arrive.
And if you are an even moderately attractive woman planning to attend one of these parties, bring along some sturdy friends, because I am not sure what would have happened to me if I had not left immediately.
I went to the coffee night the previous evening, and I was not nervous and too quiet for my own good there. But after being mobbed, most people don't feel all that chatty, anyway.

_I Ching_ anyone?

Thank you for responding, magic . . .
You're right, it's the Wilhelm version I'm reading. I did see a newer version with a red dust jacket. Is that the other you refer to?
I think perhaps it's more popular on the West Coast, where people are more interested in mystical philosophy.
My favourite passage:
Life leads the thoughtful man on a path of many windings.
Now the course is checked, now it runs straight again.
Here winged thoughts may pour freely forth in words,
There the heavy burden of knowledge must be shut away in silence.
But when two people are at one in their inmost hearts,
They shatter even the strength of iron or of bronze.
And when two people understand each other in their inmost hearts,
Their words are sweet and strong, like the fragrance of orchids.
It's poetry.
"Man" is not actually gender specific in this context, but means anyone who takes action in the world. "Sage" means an individual who is not active in the world, but values the persuit of knowledge.
Chaos theory may be the only paradigm that could encompass such a text.

Id just like to say that i beg to differ with the "party of friends" feeling of the POF partys. I attended one and it was a wide age group of members and i found that it was very difficult to meet new people, because the hardcore POFers have alreayd formed a clique in which new comers arn't too welcomes. Maybe it was just that particular party, but i was not impressed one bit. Maybe this one is different...who knows guess only one way to find out
Hmmmm, well, I went alone, walked up to the table where you're supposed to sign in. There were two women behind the table chatting up a guy who was signing in. As soon as he left, the two women began chatting up some guys who had walked in after me, and acted like I was invisible. In fact, it was really nasty. I would say it was 70% women, and they sure didn't want ANY competition.
Kind of like shooting yourself in the foot, isn't it?

On a site with this amount of traffic, I figure there's a slim chance someone else has an interest in the _I Ching_.
This is a book I've had since I was 16 years old and I still find it fascinating. It's political and sexist, but metaphorical. I'd love to talk to someone who's unlocked the secrets of the _I Ching_ . . .

paying on a first date

A few years ago I met a young guy on line: he approached me, we talked, he asked me to meet him for a drink the next night. It was prime patio weather so I went.
BUT, just as we were saying goodbye on line after our conversation, he suddenly said, "And by the way, be on time because I don't appreciate someone wasting my time being late . . . "
So I was on time but he wasn't, of course, and by the time he arrived I'd bought my own drink. He pulls up in a flashy new car. We talk for awhile and then he tries to get me to go fishing with him that evening. I didn't.
I think he was the cheapest guy I've ever met. lol If I could find a weasel icon I'd put it right here.

I AM NOT A WEB CAM GIRL!!! SO QUIT ASKIN!!

I don't think it's appropriate to blame the victim in this case. There are guys on this site who will ask for your msn id right away, and that makes me think that if they get abusive here they'll lose their privileges.
Now I see a new feature that allows you to block anyone who's approached others and asked for sex. That suggests that the chat is monitored, and the emails. I don't think that this feature would be developed if it wasn't a common complaint from women here that they're harrassed by skanky guys on a regular basis.
The other reason a guy might want to see you on a webcam is to make sure you're not his wife or gf with a fake profile.

Preservation Tecniques
Posted:
5/3/2006 9:14:55 PM
I eat potatoes with my dinners most of the time. Its like a staple. But I buy a bag and within a few days they are covered in ears! Is there any tecniques that might preserve them at least a day longer?
___________________
I wouldn't recommend putting them in a cold place like a cold cellar. I've had success storing them at room temperature, but in a paper bag so they don't get moldy, and in a dark place so they don't grow horns, as you mentioned. If the surface turns green, remove that part before cooking, but it shouldn't if they're kept in the dark.
One way to preserve them when spring comes and they start to sprout is to cook them and rice them. Once they're riced, store them in sturdy containers in the freezer until you need mashed potatoes or a base for soup, or gnocci, perogies . . . lots you can do with riced spuds.
Usually I steam whole potatoes in the microwave until they're still a bit firm, then slice them lengthwise into several slices and marinate them for the grill. Olive oil, fresh rosemary, and minced garlic is a favorite marinade, but some salad dressings work well. Right now I've got a bacon onion dressing that's tasty.

pit bull dog ban
Posted:
4/24/2006 4:16:23 PM
I live in Kitchener, Ontario, the heart of darkness for BSL. Other communities are following this ill-informed example for breed-specific legislation.
For every child bitten by a pit bull, there is another or ten others who have had their family pet taken away from them and killed despite that the dog has done nothing to deserve it. If I were a kid and my dog was killed by the authorities because of some misguided law, based on misinformation as this one is, I can tell you I would not grow up with a healthy respect for authority.
Politicians here use BSL to further their careers and staunchly ignore the advice of well-informed experts like vets, breeders, ethologists, and dog trainers. PETA supports BSL because it's the first step toward outlawing the ownership of animals entirely or the right to have companion animals at all. Once pit bulls are made illegal they only need to keep adding more breeds, and it will be effortless now that the precedent is in place. If someone's chihuahua or whippet bites anyone for any reason, that's all it takes for yours to be outlawed; then you have to move outside the city limits and you can't take your dog to your regular vet, because you risk a huge fine and imprisonment. If you have a larger dog, biting isn't necessary, just jumping on someone is enough.
And . . . if your dog looks remotely like a pit bull, it's up to you to prove it isn't. That means hiring a lawyer and spending hours preparing for court, despite that your dog hasn't done anything wrong. People with a Boxador recently spent three hours in court before the authorities would acknowledge the dog's webbed feet. Lawyers are now making their careers fighting BSL in Ontario. All this media attention on pit bulls helps us to forget that our lawmakers are ineffectual against crime and the taxpayer's money is wasted in this witch hunt.
I don't own a Pit Bull but I resent paying taxes in a community where money is wasted on bad law.

Proposed law to protect service animals in Canada
Posted:
4/22/2006 2:12:36 PM
A shocking incident in Toronto on February 24, 2006, has drawn attention to the backwardness of Canadian law in respect to service animals.
Witnesses watched as a driver deliberately attacked a police horse, Brigadier, a highly-trained, prize-winning Belgian. Brigadier's Law is proposed to help protect service animals, but we need to write letters to the law makers to ensure their attention to this necessity.
There are letters available on line that you can paste into your word-processing program and add your name and address to. You can also send an email, but paper makes a more enduring impression.
Find info here:
http://dreambarks.com
About half way down the page there's a link to articles and available letters.
Many thanks to all who make their voices heard!

Here's a recipe for rolls, although you could make a loaf with the dough, that have a unique flavour:

The interesting thing about this recipe is that it calls for honey instead of sugar for the yeast.

You can make the crust from biscuit mix to save time and the sauce is made from soup. Makes great leftovers too.

The most important thing for flaky pie crust is to avoid handling the dough any more than necessary. You don't want to develop the gluten and make it tough.

I do really enjoy brown rice and wild rice
For fluffy rice, try washing then toasting the brown rice in the oven at 300F until it's slightly browned, stirring it a few times to avoid burning. Add a little wild rice and steam it normally, but for only half an hour. Don't lift the lid until you're sure it's done.

Alexa Toolbar Removal
Posted:

Hi all--
Hope someone can advise me: this is a spyware related question.
I made the mistake of downloading the Alexa toolbar. I've managed to delete it, but I'm sure it has placed spyware somewhere in my pc and AdAware seems unable to remove it, despite that I've done a deep scan of all my drives.
I have updated all of my spyware programs recently, including Spybot and AdAware and Spyware Blaster.
But, I'm still getting popups . . .
Any further suggestions?
Many thanks

I never knew how shallow I was until last night
Posted:
3/27/2006 5:23:31 PM
I've had this sort of experience a few times now, and I have to say that the person who made you feel guilty about shallowness was manipulating you.
There's just something about eating disorders that ties into guilt; maybe it's a learned family thing, not sure. I expect a guy to take care of himself and not let himself go; I have that right, because that's what I do. So if you can't relate to someone with no sense of responsibility for their own health, good for you. You dodged a bullet.
It could be that the guy in question is in denial about his condition, or that he is a pathological liar. Either way, it's not a good way to start a relationship.

Your answer to her question seems perfectly reasonable. Perhaps she is a person who believes in absolutes, which would mean that she is a fundamentalist. Unfortunately, that also makes her the sort of person who can be manipulated by someone with no integrity, and I'd assume that had already occurred--she has "issues"!
I'd suggest that you look for a woman who can understand the complexity of your thinking.
