Altrusim vs. Individualism

An altruistic act is by definition, selfless, and sacrifice certainly does not benefit the individual making it.


Selflessness is the issue with altruism. Someone earlier asked how can an individualist have a child? How can a altruist have sex? If you don't recieve pleasure, which is designed to be selfish by nature, the process cannot work. The denial of self is the act of defying one's life and values. As I said earlier, there are tremendous acts performed by people to advance the cause of freedom or protect their family. But these acts are powerful not because they are selfless but because they are expressions of that person's values.

The saddest reality of life is that not all our values can be realized. We must choose and prioritize what we value. But when we deny our "self" none of our values, including our own lives, can be realized.

I'm looking for feedback on my profile. It's hard to know how others will perceive a profile so some feedback would be helpful. Obviously, it's impossible to capture who we are on a webpage. So profiles are really just advertisements for who we are. And we focus group advertisements so why not profiles? Anyway, all assistance is greatly appreciated!

Definitely worth the read. Though most people who read the book fail to understand it. They focus on the economics and the strike by the producers. They fail to see the book is essentially about happiness and living by our rationally choosen values. The strike and the economic situtation are just to show the forces that attempt to subvert our values and destroy our happiness. Essentially, the strike is a bit of a gimic. Rand new full well we were not ready for a strke by producers. What she wanted to do is free us from un-earned guilt. How we choose to spend the rest of our lives free of that un-earned guilt is based on our rationally choosen values. It doesn't mean we hate living in society. In fact, man loves to interact with man, trading on shared values -- whether those values are material goods, ideas, or concepts.

I bit of caution concerning the book. Rand is cleary angry at the soviets for taking her father's business. Her anger is understandable and her fear is rational. It all happened to her -- all of it. But it does effect the tone of her books and makes it easier to for her to attack instead of inform. If you are a productive and creative person, it is in your self interest to help others to live by their own values. Leaving society does at this point is probably counterproductive to the liberty we all seek.

If you remember that A=A, reality is real, man's mind is his/her greatest tool, we live for the sake of our own rational happiness, and our productive and creative work is our highest virtue, you're going to do just fine. If you help someone else see these things as well, we're all richer for it.

Let's seperate altruism from cooperation for a moment. Cooperation is necessary for humans to exist and prosper. One reason humans evolved succesfully is that we cooperate. The question then become, what is the nature of that cooperation? Is it based on our individual, rationally choosen values traded with other individuals with rationally chooen values? Or is it based on what others tell us ought be our values for the sake of everyone but ourselves?

Altruism is based on the concept that the values of others are always superior to the values of our own. Altruism means we exist for the good of the group, not for our own happiness.

I believe the nature of man is to cooperate through trading of values, whether those values are material goods, ideas, or concepts. It is through our productive and creative work that we create things that are both of value to self and value to others. We do not create "for" others but to trade with others. It also means I won't do something that violates my own self interest -- means I won't betray my values. If a man fights for his freedom, this is not altruistic because that freedom is of value to him -- even if he loses his life in the process. If a man fights for the freedom of others, even then, it's not altruistic because he's fighting for the concept or idea that he values.

So the real question is -- do we believe in cooperative values-based individualism or altruism?

Seriously, overall, this may be the least efficient way to meet woman and this is why it is abandoned usually by the age of 18 (maybe 20 if they only thing to do in your town is cruising walmart).

okay -- the first thing a guy should do when things start to get hot and heavy is remove his socks -- prior to pants coming off. Nothing looks worse than a guy in his underwear with socks on. obviously this is a sex and dating forum so there is a slight expectation that sex will be discussed --- sometimes in frank detail. And in many cases, people are making funny remarks about sex and other times, they are making serious statements or asking frank questions about sex. And sometimes some sexual practices may seem strange or grotesque to others -- hell, I've read a few things that made me say Hmmmm?. But that's okay. It's okay to talk about sex -- especially in a sex thread.

But what may surprise some folks is the people who are discussing sex also happened to have strong values and are generally good people. They just happened to be able to be open about a subject that many people are afraid to discuss in earnest. And people who can't talk about sex aren't really prudes. BUT people who come to a sex forum to question our values are prudes or, at minimum, attention whores. Sometimes I wish that those that are prudish about talking about sex were also prudest enough to keep their opinion to themselves and let us heathens have our fun in peace.

Okay, so who's up for an orgy?

It is ingrained in the male psyche to measure success in quantitative terms. We catalogue baseball stats, stocks, golf scores, gas milage, etc. We often define success by how many or how much. Sometimes that's our salary and sometimes that's total orgasms. I don't know why we are that way but we are (not all... so please understand I'm over generalizing a bit here). So that is why we ask the question about how many she had. We want the feedback we're doing things right and for us, the measurement has to be definable.

Now, woman don't always see the world the same way as men do (I know, the shock?). They live in a much more qualitative world and can deal with subjective measurements. "It felt good so I cuddled," is a way to think about it. Total gross of products shipped today isn't really a measurement for many woman.

So when you ask a woman how many orgasms she had, you may be asking to make sure she enjoyed herself and was satisfied (a very noble question) but she may interpret the question as a sport score. That if she gives the wrong amount, the sex will have been unsuccessful. And by doing so, asking the question puts a lot more pressure on sex than it should.

So, men, and I'm speaking to myself as much as anyone, we have to learn to measure our success in other ways.... did she cuddle afterward? Is she still here? All that sort of touchy/feely stuff that we, as guys, have trouble with.

And for woman, accept that when we ask you how many, we're not trying to compare you with Babe Ruth. We trying to find out if we did things right because we want it to be enjoyable for you. So if you want us to know it was enjoyable, tell us... Positive feedback gives us a big head... if you know what I mean!

look at who was in the decent and who was in the majority on those cases and tell me if they were conservatives or liberal justices. the one's expanding gov't control and reducing property rights are the liberals.

heck, I'm beginning to think that Clarence Thomas may be the only sound mind on that court -- and I never thought I would say that... But he was for legalization of medical marijuana, against the expansion of eminent domain, and has been a sound libertarian conservative on the court. He was also in the majority on the texas sodomy case where the supreme court said that state gov't could not restrict gay sex.

I think there is two ways to look at this: one is scientifically and the other is socially.

From a scientific perspective, there you are not at any more risk of producing a child with a birth defect with this distant of a relative than you would be with anyone else in the population. So from a scientific perspective, you're safe. Plus, a simple bloodtest can tell if you either of you carries a double resessive gene for anything "bad". If you do, don't have kids.

From a social perspective, things get a little bit dicey. The social norms in most of the United States would say no to this relationship -- just because you're distantly related (other cultures see it as preferable to marry a cousin since it keeps money, land, etc. in the family). I'm not one to conform to social norms so, for me, since I'm pretty safe scientifically, I'd probably go for it if I was interested in her. But that's up to you and how much you value what other people think.
