Betty Page

I read about her death this morning. I was born in the 50's, but I had never heard of Betty Page before. I agree that those icons of the past were different, more class than the the so called sex symbols of today.
I recently read an article about Jean Harlow, who died in 1936. It said that she was the ultimate sex icon, the one that all who came after her, including Marilyn Monroe, modeled themselves after.

Middle Age and The Common Cold/Flu
Posted:
12/11/2008 11:28:25 PM
When I was a kid and would have a cold, my mom would take sheets and build a tent over my bed and take Vicks vapor rub and drop it in boiling water and steam the hell out of me with the stuff! She would rub it on my chest and throat and she would scoop a big glob of it up on her finger and stick it in my mouth and make me swallow it. To this day I can't stand the stuff!
She beleived that regular purging was a great preventative for colds and all other kinds of illnesses. Once a month she would dissolve Epson Salts in hot water and make us kids drink it. That stuff will really clean you out, but it is awful to get it down. The problem was that there were five of us kids and she would dose us all at the same time...and we only had one bathroom!

Walmart Worker Killed by Holiday Shoppers...
Posted:
11/28/2008 6:58:46 PM
I work at a WalMart store in South Carolina. I am neither retarded nor handicapped and I make more than minimum wages. Fortunately, nothing as bad as what happened at the Long Island store happened here today, but it was still disconcerting to observe the actions of many of the public today. We had shoplifters literally running out the door carrying as much as they could handle. Some were stopped, most got away. A pregnant woman was knocked to the floor by a man who wanted the TV she was trying to buy. He was arrested and taken away by the cops. Black Friday is bad enough, but I see barbaric behavior by the public nearly everyday.

Capital Punishment~ for or against?
Posted:
1/9/2008 2:02:25 PM
Up until about 120 years ago, most executions were public. Many were veiwed as something like a festive holiday. I don't think they were really useful as a deterrent, since murders, rape and other crimes continued as they always have.
It has always seemed odd to me that the death penalty was referred to as a punishment. After you kill the person, you can't punish him anymore, so what you are doing is removing him from society, and the same thing can be accomplished with life imprisonment without parole. So the death penalty might be more about revenge than punishment. And I can understand that to a degree, because if somebody murdered someone that I loved or cared about, I would want revenge. But the law is supposed to be about punishment of crime, not revenge.
However, when I see things on the news like I saw this morning, about the terrible death of that hiker in North Georgia, or about the guy who had an argument with his wife and then threw his 4 young children off a bridge, I think that these people should be killed in a slow painful way. But that's just an emotional reaction.
Real punishment would be life with no parole, no coddling, just locked up for 23 hours a day.

What was so great about JFK

I remember seeing his speeches on TV also, and I was 13 when he was assassinated. I can remember the sorrow all over the nation on that day. I too, beleive he was a good president, and had he lived to serve a second term, he would have been a great president.
And if he banged Marilyn Monroe, I don't blame him.

The General Election: Could Mrs. Clinton or Mr. Obama Win?
Posted:

I have watched that clip several times, I didn't see any tears. She was responding to a questioner who expressed concern as to how she was holding up under the stress of campaigning. She became a little choked up with the emotion of the moment, so what? So she's human. Just what does "looking Presidential" mean anyway?

Even if Clinton doesn't come in first in New Hampshire, it would be wrong to count her out, in spite of what the media keeps harping, that historically any one who has won both Iowa and New hampshire has gone on to win the Presidency. Big deal...history changes all the time. I agree that Obama will have a very difficult time against the Republican nominee, whoever it is, once the campaign gets going between the two nominees. I feel confident that Clinton can hold her own against any Republican.

Does 'experience' matter?
Posted:
1/6/2008 7:49:49 PM
Experierence and knowledge are a big consideration for me, which is why I support Clinton. I like Obama, but I think that Clinton has a point in questioning his limited experience. He uses the word "change" a lot, and I do agree that a change in the White House is essential...Republican out-Democrat in, but I had never heard of him till recently, and I think that he needs more experience in government before he takes on the Presidency, but I could be wrong, he might, if elected, turn out to be one of the best presidents ever.
As for the Republicans, I would think that McCain has an edge on experience, and also Romney. If I were to go completely against my nature and vote Republican, it would be one of those two.

The General Election: Could Mrs. Clinton or Mr. Obama Win?
Posted:

Obama is certainly an impressive man, but I'm not so sure about his agenda or his set of qualities. Bit it seems that much of the media, especially CNN, has already decided for us that he will be the next president. If he is ultimately the democratic candidate, then perhaps Edwards would be a good choice for his running mate. Although he might surprise us with who his choice would be.
Having said that, I am still supporting Clinton. Even if she doesn't come in first in New Hampshire, if she can hold on to her contributers, and doesn't run out of money, she will be formidable in the later primaries,I think. But if she is not the nominee, then I will vote for Obama, with some reservations. The main reservation is that I'm not convinced that he can beat the Republican, and that would be tragic. I beleive that Clinton, if nomimated, could beat anyone that the Republicans will field. All the major polls seem to indicate that.

I don't hate Clinton, am I the only one? I just watched the New Hampshire debates, and I thought Obama did very well, and Clinton didn't do too badly either. even Richardson was impressive. Primaries aren't held in North Carolina till later in the year, and by the time I get to vote in a primary, the nominees will be all but locked in. If I were living in New Hampshire, I would have a hard time at this point choosing between Obama and Clinton, but it would be one of them that would get my vote.

child abuse
Posted:
1/5/2008 9:23:15 AM
If I knew that a child was being abused, then I would certainly intervene. To me, it is the most heinous of crimes. I live 50 miles from the lake where Susan Smith drowned her children back in '93. I have visited the memorial that was erected at the lake in those little boys honor, it was very moving. There is a man who is currently on trial, to determine if he is insane, for decapitating his 4 year old. A woman is currently on trial for setting her house on fire and leaving her children inside to die. A man was recently sentenced to prison for raping a 3 month old baby girl. These horror stories are far too common...why? What causes people to abuse and kill the little ones who look to them for love and protection.

Iowa has Spoken

Why should she throw in the towel? She has the best chance of being nominated. As much as I like Obama, I just can't beleive that he can ultimately be nominated. If I'm wrong about that, then I will be happy to be wrong.
Hillary finished 9 points behind Obama. In the 1980 Iowa Caucus, Reagan finished 29 points behind Bob Dole. Heck, even Pat Robertson beat him, but look who won the nomination, and the presidency.
My support has been with Clinton from the beginning, and I think she will be the next president.

Death or Divorce

Divorce is bad enough, but I imagine that death would be so much worse. My mom died 5 years ago after 55 years of marriage. My dad has never been the same since. He's 76 years old, but greif respects no age. It's like he has withdrawn from life. He just sits around waiting to die. He actually says that he just wants to die and be with her again.

History made tonight, Barack Obama wins in Iowa!!

I watched Obama speaking in New hampshire a little while ago. The more I see him speak, the more impressed I am with him. He seems to me to be a sincere and intelligent man...and sincerity and sometimes intelligence are not qualities that I usually associate with politicians. I really hope that he does well, and if he wins the nomination, I'll be happy about it. However, I really don't beleive that he can be nominated. I beleive that Clinton can and will be nominated, that's why I support her. To me, the important thing is getting a Democrat back in the White House.

I agree that it is his message that pulled people to him. His speech last night was fantastic. Although I am a Clinton supporter, It makes me feel good about America that a man of blended race could win an election, [caucus] in a state that is predominently white. I'm not sure if he can maintain momentem through all of the primaries to come in order to be nominated. But I will vote for the Democrat, whoever it is, and I'm a registered Independant.

Conrad Black...is he a victum of American and Britsh Riverly???
Posted:

The Brits burned the White House in 1814, they didn't burn it down. The frame or shell, even the roof, remained, only the interior was badly damaged, and it was rebuilt relatively soon. They also set fire to the Capital, with less success in damaging it.
And then, General Jackson, with his force of 2,500, exacted revenge when he defeated and put to running a larger British force at New Oleans in 1815.
In his song "The Battle of New Orleans," Johnny Horton claimed that the Brits..
Ran through the briars and they ran through the brambles,
And they ran through the bushes where a rabbit wouldn't go.
They ran so fast that the hounds couldn't catch 'em,
From the mighty Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico!

A thread about Abraham Lincoln....
Posted:
12/29/2007 10:35:47 PM
I agree with MG that Lincoln is one of the most fascinating characters in History. People have differing opinions as to whether he was a great president or not...I think he was the best man for the job in that period of history.
One of my favorite stories about him, that gives some insight into his character, was written by historian Phillip B. Kunhardt Jr. :
Left to Lincoln, the White House was not about to change much; he cared little for entertaining and had no eye for finery. But Mary Lincoln caught the decorating bug. Although she had run a thrifty house in Springfield, once in the White House, with her best friend in the world suddenly sealed off from her by his work and cares, Mary began spending. From G.S. Humphrey & Co. in New York came 320 yards of fancy matting. From William H. Carryl & Bro. in Philidelphia came $7,500 worth of draperies and funiture. Rooms were papered. The East Room was newly carpeted in green velvet. Portraits and mirrors and chandeliers were cleaned and repaired. A.P. Zimandy of Washington provided glassware to the tune of $1,500. E.V. Haughwout & Co. billed $3,195 for a porcelain dining service with the Arms of the United States on each of the 190 pieces. Pretty soon Mary Lincoln's refurbishing added up to $26,000, $6,000 more than Congress had allotted. When Lincoln was asked to approve a request for additional funds, the overworked President finally took notice.
"It can never have my approval," he exploded. "It would stink in the nostrils of the American people to have it said that the President...had approved a bill overrunning an appropriation of $20,000 for flub dubs for this damned old house, when the soldiers cannot have blankets!"

No Children....Why
Posted:
12/29/2007 9:23:15 PM
I don't remember particularly wanting children...ended up having 2. I never mentioned anything about grandchildren, now I have 8. I enjoy my grandchildren more than I ever enjoyed my children...I can send them home.
It's a personal choice, and it's not anyones business whether someone wants children or not. I have never and would never ask anyone why they have no children.
And I agree with what someone else said, some people should not have children, and those are the people who usually have them.

I would like to go back if I could go back knowing what I know now, there are a lot of things I would do differently. But then there are other things that I would do the same.
Mostly, I'm glad that I'm where I'm at now.

What's wrong with sex before marriage?
Posted:
12/14/2007 6:47:58 PM
I really don't beleive those reports either. I've known people who have had sex before they were married and are still married after many years, and then I've known the opposite, people who had sex before marriage and the marriage didn't last. I'm in the latter category, but I don't believe that the fact that we had sex before marriage was the reason the marriage didn't last.
My parents are in the former category. My mom was 7 months pregnant when they married, they didn't keep this a secret. They were happily married until her death 55 years later.

Having watched my mother die of lung cancer 4 years ago, I don't think that anyone deserves to suffer like that. But I watched a documentary on the WE network last night about Tammy Faye. She was shown sitting around in her mansion located in a gated community. She was shown dressing in her designer clothes and being driven to interviews, lectures, parties and even doctors appointments in her chauffeur driven limousine. I find it hard to feel excessively sorry for her. At least she suffered in grand style, more than can be said for my mom.

My kids don't know anything about me being on any dating site. Don't know what they'd think, but when I was a teenager I walked in on my parents once while they were doing it. It was so icky and disgusting, and embarrassing, I still cringe when I think of it 40 years later.

Transgender washrooms?? Are they needed?

When I enter a public washroom, it's for one purpose; to take care of business and leave. I don't socialise with people in public washrooms, and I don't care who comes in when I'm there, as long as their purpose for being there is the same as mine, to use the bathroom and leave. The OP asked the question,"Is society going too far with this?"
I think so.
