Suggestion to make long profiles more browsable.

T
here is a limit as to how long a profile can be. Personally, I find even the long ones to be easily scanned manually.
The Ctrl+F function has been around for years in the Opera web browser as well as in Internet Explorer. You'd be better off to remove all the stuff on how to browse your profile from your About Me section. Also, the YouTube link is forbidden

Being Flagged For Adding Intimate Encounter Seekers to Favorites
Posted:
6/29/2009 4:18:43 PM
Does adding a profile to your Favorites list count as a "contact" and therefore blocking the profile from contacting other users with the Intimate Encounter block as part of their email settings?
A
n excellent question. The use of Favorites could be a way to initiate communications with those who are seeking an Intimate Encounter and not get flagged for doing so. Those who would do this would be hoping the person they added to their Favorites would message them.
As for the answer to the question, I honestly don't know. However, I'm sure there is at least one person who does

I
recall a poster in another forum that would post a tag line at the end of a post that fit with the thread topic, usually in a clever or humorus way. Say the topic was crazy space aliens. The tag line might be:
User Name Here. . .
Ready to get all beamed up
!
As far as I remember, this type of thing never really caught on as it was just the one person

Allow 5 miles or less, add New Users, hide profiles from future searches. . .
B
asic Search, My City, Not Yet Viewed, New Users and the removal feature of My Matches does most of what you suggest. Your searches are saved and are used if you search while logged in.
You can also have saved multiple Advanced or Basic Searches using your browser's bookmarks. Bookmarking the first results page of an Advanced or Basic Search will save the selected search criteria because all the selections are in the URL for the page. This makes it easy to select a new search with one click of a bookmark.
POF is feature-rich. And, Interests has yet to be utilized to its full potential. As far as I have seen, it is the only way to get search results that display both genders at once. Try clicking on an Interests link on yours or any other profile. You'll see what I mean. You can also bookmark Interests links for added convenience.

NONE of the women appearing above OR below my messages on my Inbox page are within 50 miles of me.
N
owhere on the Inbox page does it say those users are within 50 miles. Those users are ones who are online and in your state or province. Age Range can be set using My City.
The 50 mile limit seems to be working fine for the row of users seen on profiles. So, use Basic Search, Advanced Search and My City. Consider the Inbox photos as expanding your horizons. Honestly, you may see someone you might not have otherwise.
Msg: 37
My City appears to have about a 300 mile range.
The Zip Code you selected seems to be associated with the entire state of Virginia by the system. Choose a Zip Code from the next closest city or another one associated with your location. Try 23432 Suffolk and then give My City another go.
Msg: 44
I think what the site really needs is either a better My Matches, or multiple "saved" Advanced Searches, rather than having to fill in the same things over and over, tweaking them this way and that.
Bookmarking the first results page of an Advanced Search will save the selected search criteria because all the selections are in the URL for the page. This makes it easy to select a new search with one click of a bookmark

Why Not Trinary Computers?
Posted:
6/2/2009 7:52:34 PM
T
he concept is not a new one. The Setun was designed and built in the late 1950s in the Soviet Union. Instead of vacuum tubes or transistors, Setun used logic devices comprised of readily available diodes and miniature ferrite cores. A ternary computer could cost less in hardware than its equivalent in a binary system, provided the hardware was designed for symmetrical code from the outset.
Think of ternary computers akin to the Sony Betamax format. Betamax was better than VHS, but thanks to mass marketing and public demand, Betamax lost out. Also, ternary computing has a predominantly Russian, cold war era heritage which didn't help competition with IBM

Email Sending Security Feature - CAPTCHA

Why do I get the same letters for a message to send to different profiles
Should it not change each time
W
hen you see the letters, press and hold your Control (Ctrl) key down and press the F5 key. Ctrl+F5 completely refreshes all elements of a web page. See if that gives you a new set of letters. Once you successfully enter the letters, the system shouldn't ask you to do it again

This bug has been like this for as long as I have been on POF. The threads in Profile Reviews are pinned. The color is there to make them stand out and to enhance their pinned status. A Moderator or Admin sets the color. General users are allowed only a few HTML codes, and color is not one of them

Ray Kurzweil - Eternal Life

A
round 1983, Kurzweil, after unveiling his new musical instrument, the Kurzweil K250, predicted that the acoustic grand piano will become obsolete and be replaced by his creation within 10 years. His prediction never came to pass and his company that produced the instrument lost money and was eventually bought by Young Chang, a Korean piano manufacturer. While Kurzweil and other electronic instruments have come a long way since the heyday of the K250, acoustic pianos (as well as all other acoustic instruments) are far from being obsolete

Marketing Ploy or Based on Statistic?
Posted:

I purposely answered the questions in such a way I should have been arrested and of course I was accepted and passed with flying colors.
T
here are no illegal activities mentioned in the questionnaire. It merely found you to be consistent in what you say and what you might do in a dating relationship.
In my attempt to be inconsistent (I simply chose the first answers to all the questions as I saw that doing so for at least two of them would produce an inconsistency), I got this statement in my response:
The results of that questionnaire indicate that you come across, at least partly, as inconsistent in what you say and what you might do in a dating relationship.
I was rejected and not forwarded to the upgrade. You only get the one shot, so take the questionnaire seriously if you want a real chance at the upgrade

POF Improvements

Do you think that since she may be getting TONS of emails that she is simply checking the box and deleting it, just to delete it?
M
ore likely a person checks a profile first and then decides to either read the message or to delete it unread. If you see a sent message with the status as Unread/Deleted, that IS a response and rules out all doubt.
For all she knows she could have thrown away her best friend, or the one she has been looking for. The cap, if you will, is there to make managing a profile easier.
By your logic, the cap will also prevent a person from connecting with someone since some messages would never get through. Your suggestion will never be implemented.
Profiles that have not been active belong in a special category.
Profiles can be sorted by the most recently active appearing first in search results. Hey, someone had to state the obvious; It might as well be me.
Perhaps a look closer to the things you do have control over on this site would reap results more to your liking. Start with the changes you have power over rather than waiting for the site to custom fit itself to your expectations of on-line dating.
That has to be the all-time best response I've ever seen to one of these "I love this site, it's the best thing ever! But. . . " threads

Cat People
Posted:
5/19/2009 9:17:22 PM
I
had a good read over at Wikipedia on Toxoplasmosis. Quite fascinating, like how infected mice loose their fear of cats making them easy prey which can infect new cats and keep spreading the parasite. The induced production of a neurotransmitter like dopamine in humans could actually be beneficial in some cases.
I saw the version of Cat People from 1982 starring Nastassja Kinski. As I live just a few minutes walk from Blockbuster Video, maybe I'll get lucky and find the 1942 original there since I liked the '82 remake.
My question is if you knew someone was infected with this parasite, or if you yourself were affected, would it change the way you view yourself or the potential mate that you knew was affected
In a word, yes. I would still get involved with a Toxoplasmic woman provided her immune system was okay. There is no chance for me to catch it from her, though in utero transmission does happen. I'm not looking to raise a family so, this choice would have to be mutual. Of course, we would have to be truly, madly, deeply in love

Later I removed the interest criteria and just went to search for men 34 to 47 and no other criteria and still came up with zero.
M
ake sure the Interests box is COMPLETELY empty. Even an empty space could cause a Zero Results Search. The same goes for the City box. Make sure it's empty or has a valid entry. Be sure that if you use a City there is no space at the very beginning. No space at the beginning of the first Interests keyword either

I
f it was due to distance, the POF error message would be:
User is only accepting messages from users who live close by.
Being blocked would show:

Most sent mail error messages give some specific reason, except for one that I know of. Try posting all of the Mail Settings criteria from the profile in question and you may get your answer here

Captcha Reading for the Colorblind
Posted:

T
ry a screen capture by using the Print Scrn (Print Screen) key. Paste the capture into a photo editor such as CompuPic. Adjust the hue to change blue to another color that is easy to distinguish from black.
Search Google for "print screen" for more on making a screen capture if you're are not familiar with the procedure. It's very easy to do and comes in handy for a variety of uses.
Or, just have a friend help you with the blue and black letters. Once you successfully enter the correct letters, you will not have to go through the process again, or so has been my experience

Can't Edit Birthday Within Two Week Period

ou're the second person to post such a problem in recent days. Here's a link to that thread.
http://forums.plentyoffish.com/datingPosts12248032.aspx#12254143
Try changing something else in the Edit Registration section like Country and see if that takes. If it does then, my only guess at this point is that perhaps Bigfish is making some changes like eliminating the two week grace period for reasons known only to him. It's technically possible that some were abusing the ability to alter their age during the two weeks to bypass the Mail Setting of other users. Your only course of action may be to delete your current profile and make a new one

L
ook for the Block User link at the bottom left of an email a user has sent you. Once you click it, their mail to you will be deleted and you will be removed from their Favorites list if they have added you. Blocking stops further emails and prevents them from adding you back to their Favorites. The Users I Blocked link takes you to your Blocked Users list where you can unblock someone

I
reported that profile too.
If you want, message Admin or moderator Trappedonbayst directly. Here's a link to their profiles. Click their photo to view their profile. Clicking their username opens a new POF mail message window as a convenience

T
he Sent Msg page can display the following depending on the status of a sent message: Unread, Read, Unread Deleted or Read Deleted. You can send yourself a message if you want to check out how the system works.
First Contact History has a link that can also be found on the Sent Msg page in the paragraph just above the list of sent mail. It's quite useful

How about a KEYWORD Search?

So it would be hard to search for all these different synonyms for people that all have the same interests.
Y
ou can search for multiple Interests by separating the keywords with a comma using POF's Advanced Search. Some valid Interests are comprised of two or more words. So, a search with your Interests examples would be entered as follows.
scary movies, thrillers, horror movies, horror flicks
Clicking on an Interest link in a profile displays both men and women from the entire POF database worldwide.
Google Advanced Search does offer keyword searching of POF. I would suggest using it in conjunction with POF Basic and Advanced searches as well as using My Matches. Here's an example of what to enter for Google.

The Google technique is far from perfect. You will get false positives, but some matches also. That's why EVERYONE should use Interests
