OK PEOPLE, Who prefers non-smokers over smokers?...
Posted: 1/10/2007 5:14:58 PM

i prefer smokers. the yellow fingers and halitosis are a turn on for me

Funny, but I have smoked for 21 years and have neither yellow fingers or halitosis. Maybe the people you are referring to simply have horrible personal hygein? (non-smokers also have the same problem)

I would never date a smoker. Too gross. Total and utter turn off.

That really wouldnt be a problem as most smokers wouldnt want to date anyone who is so judgmental and superficial.

I know I certainly wouldnt date anyone who is so smug and self satisfied. Especially a former smoker. Thats worse than a reborn religious nut!

Environment
Posted: 1/9/2007 8:34:34 PM

As for the ecological footprint, this discussion has come up more than once at work lately when comparing certain environmental issues between provinces.

A colleague used to live in Kelowna and he said they have had blue box recylcing for over 10 years and Calgary with a million people is still "testing" the idea.

A town of 10,000 in BC has a 3 bag weekly limit for garbage. Calgary has NO limits to how much garbage you produce.

Recycling is a way of life in certain provinces... their children have grown up with it.

Treehuggers do not abound in Alberta.

Because there is lots of cash in Alberta, the landfill sites are filled with perfectly usable items and second hand stores are no longer accepting things because they have no room for storage. Our increasing thirst for new stuff constantly is crazy.

We think we do something good when we recyling bottles, yet many people still toss bottles, cans into the garbage because they can't be bothered to take them to a bottle depot cause there is always a line up.

Actually Edmonton is a North American leader in recycling.

"Since starting a curbside recycling program in 1988, Edmontonians have proudly become national leaders in effective waste management.

Waste and recyclables collected from Edmonton homes are processed at the Edmonton Waste Management Centre, a unique collection of world-class waste facilities that routinely attracts visitors from around the world.

The centre is especially famous for the Edmonton Composting Facility, the destination of Edmonton's residential waste and one of the largest composting facilities in the world.

A second important feature is the Materials Recovery Facility, where recyclables from our Blue Bag and Blue Bin programs are sorted for market.

Edmontonians also demonstrate their concern for the environment by making excellent use of Eco Stations, which are drop-off facilities for household hazardous waste and almost all other waste materials."

lmao

smoking doesn't bother me......too bad you don't KNOW me.

but thanks for making the assumption

OE: what bothers me is the lack of common sense.....EVERYWHERE

good lord... I dont know you. that is why I make assumptions. because I only know you from what i see you post....

dont tell me I have been arguing with someone who only argues because (like me) they just like to debate????

I must also say... I smoke about a half a pack every 3 days and have been gradually quiting... just cuz its to expensive... and trust me... if one of my neighbours came to the door and said my smoke was bothering them... I wouldnt smoke at home... I dont smoke in my car... I dont smoke at work... I dont smoke... well... most of the time...
I am uber-considerate...

that being said... even when i do quit... I will argue till i die in favour of smokers rights!

cuz well.... thats how I roll....

have yet to see any lease that says that smoking is not allowed.....

I have...in fact my current lease say no smokers, but being a non~smoker this does not affect me. The owners of the house are non~smokers and want to maintain their property.

true enough ss but I have not personally seen a lease that has said that. I didnt lie. But having said that... I am sure they exist. I just wouldnt sign one. problem solved no?

I do not smoke around non-smokers unless it is ok with them.
I do not smoke where it isnt allowed.
I do not smoke around children.
I do not smoke in crowds where non-smokers may be present.

Correct me if I am wrong but these conditions would describe your apartment building.

UNLESS your building is under R-2000 code, or hermetically(sp?) sealed, stop kidding yourself.

Your smoke doesn't stay contained in your unit.

what makes you think that the people on my floor dont smoke?
it IS allowed where I live.
I live in an adult only building. there are NO children here.
again... what makes you think everyone in my building is a non-smoker?

you assume a lot and know very little about where I live.

I dont smoke pot... maybe you do... otherwise I have no idea why you would even mention it...

I have yet to see any lease that says that smoking is not allowed.....

Also... what authorities would you expect to come to your beck and call when someone smokes in a non-smoking apartment? it certainly wouldnt be the police. they have better and more important things to do. bylaw? umm... they are at a min of officers after hours...
who is going to pay for all this need for increased officers? you? I certainly dont want to.
also.. the land owner or landlord/caretaker still have to abide by the rental laws... they cannot just go knocking on doors in the middle of the night... or throw anyone out just because some crazy messed up hair housecoat wearing woman wants them to.
there are certain laws that they must abide by.

Unless they ban it altogether

I have said that many times... either ban it or stop limiting where one can smoke (within reason)
It is getting to be like if they kept smoking pot illegal but wanted to collect taxes on it.

Make a decision...

There's a typical smokers' response if I ever heard one!

I can almost hear you yelling from here: I'm a smoker dammit! And I'll smoke everywhere and as long as I want and if it bothers absolutely everyone in my building, I don't care! Because I'm a smoker! Go breathe somewhere else!

whoa... lay off the crack! Did I ever say any of those things? why would you try to put words in my mouth? a bit judgemental of you...
I do not smoke anywhere I want to. I do not smoke around non-smokers unless it is ok with them.
I do not smoke where it isnt allowed.
I do not smoke around children.
I do not smoke in crowds where non-smokers may be present.

I DO AND WILL CONTINUE TO SMOKE IN MY APARTMENT BECAUSE IT IS LEGAL TO DO SO.

I dont make the laws... I do however abide by them.

hey edmguy.....

couldcha tell me then, how one smells smoke when they are on the opposite side of a closed door?

frig, I better be careful, I might run out of oxygen when I sleep with my bedroom door closed.

It really depends on the distance you are from the smoker when your door is closed.
or maybe you just lie?

I suppose though that you wouldnt know the difference between a wall that separates apartments and one that separates rooms within an apartment suite....(fire containment, barrier laws)

Better keep that bedroom door open from now on, just in case... lack of oxygen doesnt only kill.... it kills brain cells...

Actually, Since smoking is legal within ones own home (owned or rented or even an apartment) It IS a right.

As for how much someone elses smoking harms your health or just plain annoys you... well... that isnt my problem. Complain to the powers that be.

Besides... Who told you that breathing clean air is a right? better talk the auto makers about that one.. and the petro-industry, and the perfume industry, and the chemical industry.... etc.. etc...

But telling someone they can't smoke in their own privately-owned home is not cool. I hope governments do not waste any money, court time, and legal expense trying to do that.

I used to hope Santa was real also.....and you can bet that people will challenge such a draconian law in court. To great expense to NON-SMOKERS as well as smokers.

I personally refuse to stop smoking simply because I am told to do so. I wont even say how much I smoke or when I smoke or if I smoke when I am around non-smokers.... I will let the opposition suppose what they will...

I will also laugh my ass off when the non smokers such as "dew" complain (and she will complain(as that seems to be all she has ever done here)) when taxes are massively increased to cover the lack of money coming in.

Again... to address "dew"

I don't live in a bubble. I do however Know more about home construction than dew... I know that there are no connecting ducts... no connecting phone lines... no connecting power whatever she says... I dont what kind of welfare building she is used to living in but...

She also needs to learn basic reality.. heat rises... smoke is hot... it cools and does not creep through her openings in her horribly unwell built home.

I would also like to ask "dew".... when she farts... do her neighbours smell it? if so then good god ... move...

You dont need to live in a bubble to be safe... apartments are very well contained... trust me... smoke does not penitrate cinder block walls....(and drywall... and insulation... and a vapour barrier... etc.. but hey... you know better)

I could also advise you to go to many websites that would prove my point... I didnt... I typed it here...

Please provide me with FACTUAL advice why it is dangerous to me or people who live around me.

not just anti smoking nazi site... or gov stuff...

Between the ages of 35 - 45

catholic... ok...
blue eyes? contacts or no?
5'10" ok...
athletic? umm need to be more specific. I have met women who claim to be athletic that are nothing of the sort... chunky with thick arms does not qualify as athletic for women... ditto for men.
University Educated? in what? I could go to the U of A for many years and not gain any insight or worthwhile education... I know many who have done just that. I prefer people who are smart and intelligent.
I am a male... I have no children... my ex wife or ex gf might.. who knows?(kidding!)

How specific do people want this to be? POF is not a mail order catalog...

Besides... how many people actually KNOW what they want till they find it?
Most often... people realize what they needed after they find it.

I will be very specific... I WANT Kate Beckinsale...

eat onions
eat cheese (by far the worst cause of bad breath... (dont believe it? ask a non-cheese eater)

I also dislike the amount of money our country has to waste because of smokers (medical, prevention awareness, etc). I personally hope they continue to increase the tax on cigs until they are $30 a pack. Then maybe the taxes will outweigh the cost smokers burden us with.

I would seriously like to see the stats to back up the crap you are spewing. I pay about $5.00 a day in taxes due to my smoking and have seen the Dr. once in the past year due to an eye infection that I yes I payed out of pocket a total amount of $64.00.

You are either stupid or misled as to the biggest drain on healthcare... It is actually heart decease due to obesity.

Actually... If anyone here had a clue they would realize that Mayor Mandel has already said he has no intention of even considering making such a bylaw.

Also... I find it hilarious to see the very same people that commented on another thread about smoking how it would be impossible to enforce laws if there were some bars that allowed smoking and some that didn't... lmfao.... and now you are all in favor of this???

good luck with that.

You think such a bylaw would EVER be enforced?

Use your big non-smoking brains and think about it... think about the amount of bylaw officers that would be required to enforce it.... think about the MASSIVE amount of smokers that wouldn't abide such a draconian bylaw... then think about the MASSIVE court time that would be tied up with fighting it... then think about the MASSIVE jails that would have to be built to hold these people (such as myself that would never abide such a bylaw and would refuse to pay any fines imposed because of said bylaw.) then think about the MASSIVE amounts of people you would have to hire to guard these scofflaws such as myself...

For now... it won't happen... 10 years from now? who knows....

btw... I dunno how many of you non-smokers know this but umm... smoke is heated air with contaminates in it... and umm heated air rises... so good luck with your telling people it crawls in under your door...

But hey! good for you!

If it ever does become a bylaw... I wont obey it and will be that much more annoying to you... may even just blow smoke in non-smokers faces just to anger them...

Thats how I roll...

Ok you two...how are they suposed to regulate and decide what bars/pubs are smoking and what ones are not?

Wouldn't supply and demand take care of that? or is a free market not a good thing anymore?

I don't like Indian food.... too spicy for me... but I don't want all Indian restaurants changed to taco time because I prefer mexican.
There are both varieties around because supply and demand makes it as such no?

Yes. I do live in Edmonton... and yes... several bars have gone under and been taken over by franchise operations that can afford a loss of business.

Unfortunately for me (a smoker) it hasn't been the end of the world and there has been no revolution....

Personally? I haven't been to a bar since it took place. I refuse to give my money to a place that won't allow me to smoke.

On the plus side... It has made me a better cook! and even saved me a few bucks that I might have spent in a bar.

So if this is what the majority wants, then when are the majority gonna stop collecting unfair taxes from the minority?

BTW... it is a well known fact that the people who drink are more likely to smoke as well... so the majority of a population means nothing... the majority of those people who don't smoke also don't drink.

What do non-smokers have against having two different establishments that will cater to both needs?

Is it like born again christians that can't stand to see anyone who isn't like them?
