Strategies to avoid Holiday weight gain?
Posted: 11/25/2009 10:16:59 PM
To me, it makes no sense ruining my holiday by feeling deprived the whole time. So what I do is behave myself as best I can before and after whatever holiday is coming up, then do whatever the heck I want on that special day. I just don't go completely nuts.

Indulging during the handfull of holidays will only be a blip on the radar over the rest of the 365 days in a year. So, yeah. For me, holidays don't count!

I can't think of a better way than the way you're doing it now. Talk to them. Make yourself clear as you can. And stick to your guns. If they stick around anyway, then they're interested in you, not a piece of tail. If they dissappear, no big loss.

And don't let anyone make you feel like a prude or whatever because of what you believe and the way you feel.

Books that helped you on your weight loss journey....
Posted: 10/17/2009 9:46:05 PM
Eat This not That is a handy reference book that talks about problem foods and and better choices to substitute for them.

That's kind of what I did when I started losing weight last November: I started counting calories and looking everything I was eating. Then I started substituting the problem foods for better choices.

For example, instead of pop I drink propel fitness water, or just plain water. Instead of poptarts, I'd have low calorie instant oatmeal with a teaspoon of real maple syrup (oooh yeahhh).

As time went on, I slowly changed my eating habits to reduce my calorie intake quite a bit. And the fat just melted away.

Chivalry and Expectations...Too much?

I dated a gal that was working on becoming a cop. She was also a lady and I treated her that way.

If a guy is considerate and loving, he would want to take care of his womman. Seems to me the chivalry would come naturally.

A weight problem...

One tip that help me either pass on something or not have so much is to remind myself I'll eat again later.

The other big one for me was to know what the calorie count of that food I have trouble saying "no" to is. Knowing that an order of fries is 300+ calories sure takes the fun out of them, lol.

older woman says: come to my place to watch a movie then have sex
older woman says: lets take my car

The Game and its effectiveness
Posted: 9/4/2009 11:12:06 PM
I dunno. Seems to me if you're not being yourself, you're being a phoney. And if you do manage to pick some gal up by being a phoney, then she must be attracted to the phoney, not to you.

Now if your end game is just to get laid... whatever. But if you're looking for a relationship, and you're playing games and being a phoney right from the start, how's that supposed to work?

Is it some kind of bait-and-switch thingy, where you get them to fall in love with the fake you, then gradually you become the real you and they'll never notice the difference? Reminds me of some of the other tactics people try, like lying on their profiles, or not including a pic... um... nvm.

Celebrating Ideas for Weightloss

Congratulations!

I would be doing those things I couldn't do before but wanted to so badly, like a day at the beach or water park, or dancing, or hiking.

I lost a pile of weight this last winter. So this summer I was able to hike Watkins Glen, visit Niagra falls (lot of walking there), go canoing, and bale hay (believe it or not).

A few years back I was on the beach in Texas, watching this gal (a friend of a friend) playing with my friends young daughter. She was helping her build sand castles, looking at shells and learning about the world. That blew me right away. I'd swear she was the most beautiful woman on the beach that day.

20 years ago I wouldn't have noticed, with all the bikini babes running around.

My guess is a lot of the guys that say they're looking for LTR, actually are. But they're all for getting laid too. What surprises me is that it sounds like people are expecting to get some action, regardless of whether things work out or not. What is that, like a consolation prize? A lovely parting gift? Dunno.

How to lose inches
Posted: 8/9/2009 9:58:53 AM
I've been keeping a diary of what I'm eating and counting calories. It's perfect for pointing out what the problem areas are in your eating habits.

And yeah, if you're drinking sugar drinks, you may wanna have a close look at those. The calorie count on them may suprise you, and probably help you say no to them more easily.

I've drinking water and substituting pop for propel fitness water. I like the taste and it only has 25 calories, as opposed to a 20 oz rootbeer which has almost 300 (yikes).

Games and gamers..

I'm gonna have to disagree with the "illusion of friends" idea. I've got lots of friends online. We hang out just about every night, talking on voice chat or text. We talk about everything you'd talk to your "real life" friends about. A lot of the guys I've known for 8 or 10 years! One of my on-line buddies is my brother in Montana. Another is my best friend from since we were so little we don't even remember lol.

We have get togethers just about every year. Last year it was a beach vacation in Destin, Florida. The year before it was a wedding in Pittsburg (the two that got married met online). Two years before that it was a long weekend in Galveston, Texas.

And I'm not the exception either. My Aussie buddies have had get togethers in Melbourne. The guys and gals in England have met up too.

trying to lose weight, any help appreciated :D
Posted: 4/26/2009 1:40:52 AM
I've lost about 40 pounds so far, since the beginning of November, just by counting calories and changing my eating habits.

Here's a couple articles that sum up what I've been doing:
http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/weight-loss/HQ01625
http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/calories/WT00011

Here's a calorie calculator that tells you how many calories you burn in a day:
http://walking.about.com/cs/calories/l/blcalcalc.htm

Basically, I try to eat fewer calories than my body naturally burns in a day. Most sites recommend 500 to 700, depending on the person. Too low and your body goes into starvation mode, your metabolism shuts down and you quit burning calories.

I keep track of everything I eat, and read the nutrition labels. It's kind of a pain (just a bit), but it sure beats the hell out of being fat, sick all the time, or worse! I wish I'd started doing this years ago!

No, I'm not starving myself. For some reason nobody believes that. I'm eating as much as I ever did. I'm just eating less of some stuff and more of other stuff.

I haven't started any exercise program, either. But I am slightly more active, doing fun things (because if it sucks, I won't stick to it).

Here's some tips:
* Talk to your doctor before you do anything else.
* READ THE LABELS! You'll be surprised, again and again and again.
* Don't assume ANYTHING. Look it up. Get the facts from credible sources.
* Pay attention to everything you're eating. One study said that keeping a diary is the most common aspect of most successful weight loss programs.
* Eat 4 or 5 smaller meals a day, to avoid being hungry.
* Go slow and be patient. You don't want to burn out and quit.
* Take smaller portions of high calorie stuff and bigger portions of low calorie food.
* If you get hungry, just remember you're going to eat again soon.
* Make changes you can live with. If it sucks too bad, you won't stick to it.
* Don't deny yourself anything. You'll only want it more.
* Don't keep problem foods in the house. Go out and get them when you want them.
* Plan what you're going to eat ahead of time.
* Plan ahead for special occasions, and then enjoy them.
* It's not pass or fail. If you have a bad day, no biggie.
* You don't have to be perfect.
* You don't have to be an expert.
* Stay focused on the positives: your accomplishments and goals. Don't let the negatives stop you.

Making better food choices...
Posted: 3/31/2009 8:55:56 PM
In general I'm shying away from burgers, fries and pop and eating a whole lot more poultry and fish, fruits and veggies, whole grain breads and cereals. But more specifically...

Instead of pop with meals, I just drink water, or a small juice and water.

When I have popcorn, I used to drink pop with it. But now I have a Propel fitness water (20 calories). I'm eating a lower calorie popcorn too.

For pizza, I get thin crust instead of regular crust, and ham instead of other meats.

For fast food, I get grilled chicken instead of burgers and chili or fruit and walnut salad instead of fries.

I ditched poptarts for low sugar Quaker instant oatmeal. I put a spoonful of the maple syrup we make every year on it, and still come out way ahead calorie-wise.

If I have hotdogs, they're the fat free turkey dogs with a whole wheat bun. I also just have one hotdog and a veggie or whatever, instead of two hotdogs.

Instead of snickers bars (280 calories), I might get a snickers icecream bar (180 calories).

The other more general thing I do is eat smaller portions of high calorie stuff, and have something low calorie along with it.

There's a book out called Eat This Not That, which gives a lot of ideas about good trade-offs like that. I thumbed through it and bought it, but I haven't got around to reading it yet.

Question about fast food?
Posted: 3/13/2009 3:14:06 PM
According to the mcdonalds website...
http://nutrition.mcdonalds.com/nutritionexchange/nutritionInfo.do?ef=items&item=257

180 calories for the patties (mostly fat)
100 calories for the cheese slices (mostly fat)
150 calories for the bun
10 for the ketchup lol

man... since I've been doing the calorie counting thing and checking labels, I've seen some scary sh.. er.. stuff.

Cardio.
Posted: 3/12/2009 7:27:54 PM
I never had any luck losing weight through exercise. My arms got bigger. My legs got stronger. But I didn't lose any weight, or get rid of my gut. I asked my doctor why. He said to exercise to get in shape, and change my eating habits to lose weight.

So (eventually) I changed tactics and started counting calories and changing my eating habits. The weight's been falling off for the last 4 months. I've lost 30 pounds so far without starving or torturing myself.

Don't get me wrong. You CAN lose weight through exercise, IF you maintain your normal calorie intake. An article I read said many people who try to lose weight through exercise don't get anywhere because they don't maintain their normal eating habits. They work up an appetite and start eating more, defeating the purpose.

What's been working for me (because I can stick with it for months and months) is paying attention to what I'm eating, count the calories, and get more active doing fun things.

But that's me. You gotta find what works right for you; something you can stick with for the long haul.

You think you know fitness and nutrition, but do u really???
Posted: 2/27/2009 3:34:53 PM
I've been doing the 3 meals, 2 snacks thing mainly to avoid being hungry. And that's a BIG reason to do it. A lot of people drop out or don't start in the first place because being hungry sucks .

Also, because I know I'm going to be eating again in a couple 2 or 3 hours, it's easier for me to not pig out.

There may be other benefits, dunno. But if doing the 3 meals/2 snacks thing works for you, hell yeah you should do it. Whatever keeps you going.

Don't add it to your profile
Posted: 2/21/2009 11:08:40 AM
Some people do fib a bit on their profile, just to make themselves look better. But I think some people honestly believe things about themselves that aren't exactly right; whether they think they're fit, or funny, or environmentally conscious.

It kind of reminds me of one of my favorite quotes:

"The trouble with most folks isn't so much their ignorance. It's know'n so many things that ain't so." -- 19th century humorist Josh Billings.

What I'm wondering is, after talking to you about it, do they go change their profiles?

The average age of the group of gamers I hang out with is probably between 30 and 35. Most of them are married with kids, and stuck at home most nights. So they get online and play games or just hang out.

We mostly play 1st person shooters and RPG games. But sometimes we play cards or just hang out on teamspeak (internet walkie talkie kind of thing) cracking jokes, talking about movies or tv, and trying to do eachothers accents.

hell no. lol

Christmas, New Years, Valentines day... they all come and go. So does that feeling you get when you're alone during the holidays. Wouldn't it suck to hook up with somebody for the holidays, then figure out on a Wednesday afternoon in the middle of January that you wish they'd go away?
