Why Are Over 45 Men In Love With Motorcycles?
Posted:

Gee, Steve, You're just a ray of sunshine.
I know the numbers but I really don't care. I've also taken a rider training course even though I already had my endorsement for years. Studies have shown that taking a rider training course significantly improves crash avoidance. Sadly there are still too many self/friend/family taught riders out there who could benefit from additional skills training and the statistics reflect that. What cannot be demonstrated by your quoted statistics are the number of drivers of other vehicles who cause crashes due to "not seeing" the motorcycle and violate the motorcyclist's right of way.
I have a simple plea, keep an eye out for us. Note your blind spots and really look and realize how quickly a small vehicle can completely disappear into them. Whether you like motorcycles or not or whether you're impressed by them or not, "Look twice. Motorcycles are everywhere." "I didn't see him" is not a valid excuse.

Is it better to have a woman or a man fix you up with a blind date?
Posted:
9/22/2009 6:40:43 PM
I only allowed myself to be a party to a blind date once and that was not long after I turned 18. A high school buddy set me up with his cousin who went to a neighboring school so we had never met. She was a senior in high school and I had just graduated and couldn't care less to be involved in any school events, much less those at another school where I wouldn't know anyone. On the second date she was planning our appearances at all the upcoming functions at her school and I bailed even after meeting her parents just before the second date.
I guess it left an impression on me as I've not accepted a blind or even a dim date since.

OMG, really, its called mid-life crisis! It use to be sports cars,
then rollerblades
, now its motorcycles!!!
When and where did men take up rollerblades as a mid-life crisis?
That has primarily been a female thing as far as I know (but I don't live on the west coast so how would I know except for what I see on TV).
I'm too lazy to research this, but I wonder how many of the critics in this thread have defended themselves against other perceived stereotypes in other threads?
Of course, there is nothing more dangerous than an independent man.

Why Are Men Over 30 Drama Shy?
Posted:

2nd. Your #3 is right on. ANOTHER man's children IS filled with Drama. Why on earth would a man VOLUNTEER for all that crapola?
Beats me, but there are plenty of women who have no problem, it seems, finding step-dads for their kids. That's not a situation I'm interested in and I'm upfront in my desire to not be a step-dad. That removes me from consideration from about 95% of the dating pool at my age.

Why Are Men Over 30 Drama Shy?

I like how the OP keeps popping in here thinking the rest of us are nuts for not wanting to indulge her drama. Whatever.
This thread has made me think that some posters interpret "drama" far too broadly and I think it should be narrowed and a third category be added. As I see it:
Drama is unnecessary conflict borne of some trivial event to which a healthy person would respond with a shrug of the shoulders and move on while one inclined toward drama would dwell on it for some period of time making all around them annoyed, if not miserable, until the next trivial event.
Baggage is the emotional attachment to the past whether it be people or events. We all have that involvement but it's whether and how we let it affect our present and future relationships that defines whether it's carry-on or we need a cart for it.
Complications are the third category I wish to add to this discussion. Involvement with other people always leads to some measure of complication. We hope that those complications will be pleasant and enjoyable and lead to a more rich and full life, but sometimes they go the other way and become a wall to continuing the relationship.
I think children fit into the latter category as they add another level of complexity to a relationship.
Now I'll sit back and watch as the drama types go ballistic over this post.

Where is your technology degree from? What kind of reaction is it met with?
Posted:

Whether IT is growing or contracting depends on the industry. I work in the transportation sector in the telecom corner of IT and our work load is not letting up. In fact, within the next several years our company will need to install equipment in something like 25,000 locations by 2015 to comply with federal mandates. It all depends on what you want to do.
As for the degree. I don't think it matters so long as it's from an accredited institution. What matters more is the continuing education you'll pursue as your career advances. Over the past four years the company has seen to it that I and other techs have received A+ certification and BICSI Technician certification. A+ is a lifetime deal (or at least it is for me) but BICSI requires proof of approved continuing education to renew the certification. More certification is likely in my future.
The work I do is varied, from installing a standby generator, to installing vehicle two-way radios, to installing microwave transmission equipment to running network cabling to configuring and installing a wireless point-to-point link to just a plain old telephone, my job is rarely the same thing two days in a row and for that I'm thankful.

I'll keep my antique "1978 Kawasaki" that even my die hard Harley friends admire.
A good KZ for the win, eh? No finer steed in my estimation as I have a couple myself.
While a lot of people go to the dealer and plop down cash or sign the loan papers, I think the term "enthusiast" truly applies to those who will rescue an old bike and fix it up to its former glory. I would also have to include those who will rebuild an old bike with modern components into a hybrid no manufacturer would even contemplate bringing to market. While there are younger builders of such machines I think that many middle aged guys are drawn to such an endeavor since they like the lines of a classic motorcycle and also recognize the value of modern suspension components and embark on a custom build.
I can't speak for others, but working with the mechanical bits is the majority of the enjoyment for me.

Some software is not capable of resizing pictures without noticeable artifacts such as your "kinky hair". I use a freely available program called The Gimp that does a very good of resizing without artifacts. Also, since cameras take a rather large picture these days, it helps to select an area of the image of interest and then crop the image to that selection and then size it as needed. This will help control the jaggies as well.

What laptop do YOU recommend?
Posted:

Dells manufactured in the USA? That's a laugh! Every Dell box I've opened within the past two years at work has "Made in China" printed on the box and the unit serial number begins with CN. Most likely what they do is put the labels on in the USA before they ship them out or plug the hard drive in or something else trivial.
We installed some NEC microwave radios within the past year that are marked "Made in Japan". That was refreshing.
My favorite laptops have been the IBM Thinkpads, but since Lenovo took sole possession of the line a few years ago, I think they've fallen way off from their IBM quality. They have a much more flimsy feel reminiscent of Dell and other also-rans out there. But then I guess everything is made for the expected 18 to 24 month lifespan and no longer.

BPL destroys Ham Radio Operations
Posted:
8/15/2009 5:10:11 AM
I'm always quite amused by our thinkers back east (read inside the beltway of DC) who seem to always know what we poor schmucks out here in the sticks "need". The fact is that technologies like Wimax will do a far better job of serving rural areas at a lower cost to the ISP and customer than BPL with far less hassle. I live in an area already well served by a local telco who deployed wireless DSL in 2004 (this telco is finishing up bringing fiber to all of their landline customers while AT&T in this area can't be bothered to do the same thing). I signed up in early '05 and it worked very well. At the beginning of this year they took over the local cable TV franchise and several weeks ago converted me to a cable modem. Just this week we got the farm online with their wireless system.
What is generally forgotten is that like DirecTV and Dish Network which probably have their highest penetration in the rural areas there are several vendors for satellite Internet access which can be accessed from pretty much anywhere. I looked into them as well but went with the local ISP as their pricing was right in line and besides, they're local.
But I take issue with the idea that radio amateurs are limited to lower power on VHF and higher frequencies. We're not, as the maximum PEP output is still 1500 Watts in the USA (only Novice class licensees have power restrictions in their 222 and 1200 MHz allocations). By convention lower power is used as most communications are via skywave and are line of sight or slightly beyond and anything over 100 Watts is wasted power. In the so called "weak signal" segments it's not unusual to see hams use much higher power to communicate over tropo scatter or even moon bounce.

BPL destroys Ham Radio Operations
Posted:
8/13/2009 6:42:58 PM
This is kind of old news. BPL has largely become irrelevant as an Internet delivery system, at least as far as the idea of placing an HF signal onto long power lines modulated for data carriers goes. Other technologies that utilize the power line easement may have some use such as using the existing lines as a messenger cable for fiber optic cabling. As some of the techniques that were demonstrated had a disastrous impact on HF and low VHF operations, the form of BPL opposed by radio amateurs was indeed a threat. Fortunately, it was mostly exposed as a political pipedream and seems dead for now.
The aspect of amateur radio that sets it apart from most other radio services is its ad hoc nature. While the service has plenty of infrastructure, it doesn't depend on it for communications. Virtually all amateur radio equipment is capable of communicating directly with other amateur equipment. Which is to say that hams don't require a network to exist to talk unlike cell phones, etc. This ability allows rapid establishment of a network of stations that can communicate directly with each other using a variety of modes and techniques. Hams in areas prone to natural disasters tend to procure equipment capable of operating on battery power and also invest in standby power systems so that communications can be established after the commercial mains are down.
Where will the bombardment of electronic devices end? When everything is implanted and wired directly to the brain I suppose.

Anyone ever go to ITT Tech?
Posted:
8/11/2009 10:03:01 AM
Yup. HR requirements are what you must meet to get hired. After that your aptitude for learning new tech and being a quick study is what keeps you around.
I can't comment on ITT as I don't know anyone who attended there. I did attend DeVry starting some 20 years ago and while I could have attended a more local vocational/technical school, it was the opportunity to obtain an accredited degree over a diploma that swayed me. While the technical background was useful, what I really gained was learning how to learn.
To the OP, what you get out of ITT or any other technical school is exactly what you put into it. Use all of their resources as you're paying for it. Good luck!

kawi-rider: You mean there is corporate intrigue and deception, even laxity in law enforcement in the biking world?! Seriously, though, you provide interesting details. I mean, the stereotypes about bikers are all about the overt lawbreaking, the rebel image, etc..
Magic, I don't know if has been so much corporate intrigue as effective lobbying on the part of the motorcycle industry and riders organizations. Also, new motorcycle sales had fallen off sharply after the '81/'82 time frame so with sales down and manufacturers struggling the government pretty much left motorcycles alone for about twenty years. With the recovery of Harley-Davidson in the early to mid '90s and the most recent motorcycle sales boom that started around ten years ago (even though sales have taken a hit over the past year), motorcycles began to appear on the bureaucrats radar again.
With many buyers fitting louder aftermarket exhaust systems as a matter of course, local municipalities started enacting their own sound ordinances based on existing federal law that had been around since the late '70s. Since the federal regulations had not been enforced, many cried, "Foul!", but the handwriting was on the wall. Several states and the feds started making noises about enforcement (of course the feds don't actually enforce anything, they just threaten the states with the loss of federal highway funds if they don't do the feds' dirty work for them) a few years ago. In fact, if memory serves, Harley-Davidson has been discouraging its dealerships from selling and fitting aftermarket exhausts. This has had a huge effect on their bottom line as that was a very lucrative business.
These games you are describing are just so normal, so common. What have we done!?!
IMO, the image of bikers is just that, an image fueled by Hollywood and Madison Avenue. Many people buy into it and make it their reality. The rest of us motorcyclists are more or less normal people who enjoy riding a motorcycle.

Only in the last year or so bikes are now being made to conform to the EPA general pollution rules and include a catalytic converter, lean burn idle etc. Both here and in Europe.
It has only appeared to be that way since there was no enforcement of EPA regulations so after market exhausts marked "for off-road/show use only" were sold and installed as a matter of course in violation of the regs. Actually, bikes sold in the USA have conformed to EPA emissions regulations since the 1978 model year. If they didn't conform, they couldn't be sold. The fact that the boutique custom builders got away without abiding by the regulations for a few years is immaterial to the larger motorcycle industry. The motorcycle manufacturers were successful at keeping catalytic converts off bikes until the past few model years but they are putting them on now to conform to more stringent Euro and California air standards. Since EPA adopted the more stringent Cali standards as its own we're now seeing water cooling and cats everywhere.
Read any test article from the late '70s to early '80s and there will nearly always be a complaint about the lean carburetion. EFI was adopted by the manufacturers as a way to improve throttle response and meet EPA regs during the mid to late '80s. Now that Cali and EPA have opted to ramp up enforcement a tiny bit, the motorcycling world proclaims the world is coming to an end.

I am really sick of the bikers. They look ridiculous. Especially when they gear themselves all out in the leather and the matching headband. Time to grow up guys. You look like pot bellied old farts on bikes. It doesn't make you look any more attractive (or cool)!!
The "look" isn't my thang either as I tend to smirk a bit at the costume and chrome crowd. Oh well, they're having fun in their own way and probably regard me as some sort of freak on my old Jap bike.

Gambling, in any shape or form

I farm part time, isn't that a gamble enough?
I've been in casinos a few times and I'd rather be in the garage wrenching on something or out on the farm doing something. Heh, even going to work ranks higher in my book.
What I find hypocritical is all the senior citizens who back in their days of parenthood probably lectured their kids on the evils of gambling who now fill the buses headed to the local casinos right around the time the social security checks arrive. Of course they now excuse it by calling it "gaming" and thus play right into the hands of the casinos.
Then there are the easy come, easy go types for whom the winnings are just play money. I guess I'm a skin-flint in the sense that if I won a few hundred bucks that I'd pocte some and play a little of the rest, but some say "it's not my money" and play until it's gone. It takes all kinds, I suppose.

Mk3, 1975. It has been updated with Tri-Spark electronic ignition, high output charging system, single coil 12v system (still pos earth), single Mikuni carb, and I'm about to upgrade the front brake master cylinder. Starts on one kick, so electric start is now irrelevant. When I acquired it, it had but 3800 original miles.
Ohhh!!! I'm in lust!
To me the Brit bikes just represent the best in motorcycle styling. One of these years I'd love to lay my hands on a Trumpet or Snortin' Norton. That will wait for a while. In the meantime I'll keep on enjoying my pair of '79 KZ650s. Seems as though my motorcycle taste is stuck firmly in the Carter Administration.
True story. Seven years ago a coworker showed up at a staff meeting with an 850 Commando. About 30 miles from town the clutch nut fell off so he did okay until he got stuck at the traffic light to make a left turn to the hotel. Fortunately another motorists agreed to shield him through the intersection. The next day he marshaled my help since I had a toolbox with me and we got it put back together. He offered to let me ride it in the parking lot even though I hadn't ridden for eleven years and that right side shift nearly got me !
At least I didn't dump it and that ride planted the seed so that I started looking the next spring for a bike. I finally got my first '650 in 04 and it's great just to have something to tinker with and ride around on.
I will say this, don't be hard on those who don't get "it". I don't get a lot of the things they do or understand the preferences and thought processes of a lot of people so it's a two-way street.

It all started innocently enough, he rode a motorcycle and she couldn't wait to put her arms around him as the wind flowed through her hair. They dated. He got a good job. He proposed and she said yes. A large diamond ring was her reward. They married and what an event it was, the talk of the town for months.
One day came the happy news that she was expecting and soon it became clear that she wasn't going to tolerate that motorbike in the garage any more. So with regret he listed in the classifieds and soon a teenager was riding off down the street on his baby.
Their first child was born. The intimacy dwindled until it was no more. Then after years of a loveless life she informs him he is out and she is keeping the house. After months of motions and "he said", "she said" it was all over.
A day or two later he saw a motorcycle listed in the classifieds and he knew that he would never be a wage slave again.

however, I think the problem here has to do sometimes with who is doing the things they say they don't like? With many women there is a subtext to what they say ( hope I'm not giving away any secrets here..lol)
With logic like
that
it's no wonder this whole communication thing has ground to a halt.
Why don't you women try "say what you mean and mean what you say"? GAAHHHHHH!!!
Women better start realizing durned quickly that the majority of men don't read "code". And worst of all, excusing borish behavior because you're interested? Give me a break!
And yet you wonder why men's heads are spinning and all you hear from are the players and the perverts.

Divorced or Never Married...Which is Better?
Posted:

For me, never married would be much preferred. I want to experience all of those things with a partner for the first time by each of us.
I think I would have to spend a lot of time contemplating all of the circumstances before I would agree to marry a divorced woman. There are a lot of things I'd have to get my head around and things I would have to be sure of. Of course I would need to be sure of those things with an as yet unmarried woman, but I don't think there would be quite as many circumstances to consider.

Yes, I think this is a new social phenomenon. By large measure men are questioning the upside to relationships and the drama that seems to be required. True mutual friendship appears to be a lost concept.

Hey guys don't u know, women use u for your bikes! I bet when winter comes though it is a dry season. A normal guys doesn't have to mention his bike or show pics cause he wants u to like him for him not his bike.
Sayyyy, you better get the memo out to the locals cause I haven't had one request for a ride since 1981.
OTOH, anyone that asks had better be prepared since boots, long pants, jacket, gloves, and a helmet (full face preferred) are a requirement to ride on my bike.
Actually, I'm not interested in giving rides--she should already ride her own.

Are big SUV dying their last gasp?

That would be the "Leftist Liberal, Protect The Bikers From Everyone Else" syndrome. I hate to break it to you, but motorcycle riding is dangerous, even in a perfect world; brain-dead bikers end up dead faster than brain-dead cagers. Just accept that some Soccer Mom is inevitably going to pull in front of you with her Suburban- it's fate, that's how you're gonna die. Deal with it. Enjoy the moment.
Hook. Line. Sinker!
You are right about the brain dead bikers, though. They're the ones that pull up to the bar and tank up before riding off to die.

She'd better at least have a motorcycle.

Well, yeah, but they probably weren't in the patients parking area.

So is there supposed to be a right to not be offended?
Nope. Some of us are just requesting a bit of courtesy and consideration for your fellow citizens. Is that too much to ask?

Reading this thread shows that politeness is dead, common courtesy is uncommon, and being self absorbed is the order of the day. After all, it's my "right" to express myself any way I care to right?
Please don't be too upset as the rest of the world decides to pass you by.

so, why are you still single?

Maybe a woman sits at home in some place like Kansas, for example, expecting that the world's good men are going to find her there. Well, they probably won't.
What, is Kansas some kind of euphemism for nowhere, or "no mans land"?
I get what you're saying, though. I do have my life set as I enjoy it these days and probably am not willing to be terribly inconvenienced for a relationship. Most likely that is why I'm still single.

Everyone should be required to have a motorcycle and only be able to buy anything with four wheels or more upon proper training and application to the government. The vetting process could take anywhere from five to ten years so when approval is granted another round of vetting is needed to be sure that the applicant still has a need for it. It should make life for us motorcyclists much safer to get the Brain Dead Cagers off the roads.

Apparently, you missed that memo. Velveeta!
At least for those of whom where a display of one's vehicle is off-putting, those that choose to display their vehicles are providing an easy service of self filtering for you.

woman sues airline for passenger shooting semen in her hair

Well I feel she has no right to file a lawsuit against the airline...but would against the man...bodily fluids, yuck what if he has aids etc etc.
Careful. It's not PC to suggest AIDS could be spread by semen in the hair.

Are men attracted to fashionable women?
Posted:

All I needed to read was short haircut and and "pixie" to know that another woman had gone off the deep end into the cesspool of fashion. For any woman who doubts this, take a look at Playboy centerfolds or a swimsuit calendar. There will be exceptions, but by and large the much greater percentage of the women featured will have at minimum shoulder length hair or it extends to their shoulder blades or lower. The people putting together these publications know their target audience very well. When short hair was all the rage in the '90s, those publications stayed true to form. Had they followed fashion trends, they would have seen sales drop considerably.
Think about that before you decide to do some radical makeover while thinking the end result will make you "adorable". Odds are, it won't.
Besides the "pixie" cut (which I too had to Google to even know what was being discussed) is the stupid looking cut that is very short in back and then is chin length at the front. That and short hair that is moussed straight up to look as though the owner just finished french kissing a light socket are about as off putting as I've seen. Yet women gravitate to those styles. It boggles the mind.

why is it guys shy away from a girl that has kids?
Posted:

women have a maternal urge that men dont have. They look at kids comletely differently.
And if they don't have children, that urge leads them to boarding a dozen or so cats.

The head of the BC motorcyle association, one of the safest riders in Canada, presumably, died about 4 years ago. One year later, his wife, riding down the same stretch of road, died.
I'd much rather die doing something that I enjoy than languishing in a care center for years after denying myself any joy in life because it was "too dangerous". When my card is punched, don't cry for me as there have to be better riding roads in heaven than here in the plains states.
Riding a motorcycle is absolutely stupid. I had one and nearly died many times.
Honest question, did you complete a rider safety course?

It's part of my life. I enjoy it. Women have cats. I have a motorcycle. It doesn't stink up my house, leave hair on stuff, puke on my bed, claw up stuff.
AMEN!!!

What would you see as excessive piercings?
Posted:

Anything beyond one in each earlobe is excessive to me.
It's sadly rare, but refreshing, to see a young woman without piercings and tattoos for a change. Body mutilation does nothing for me, but then I'm just an old fuddy duddy, I guess.

"Motorcycles lean. Cars just suck."
